Great place to learn about meteors! Just a quick shot off the main highway.

Was a little underwhelming. Hard to really see the impact hole. Might be cooler if there was a bridge or deck over it too see from a better perspective then just a pathway around.

Neat place to see where a meteor hit the earth. There is a path that takes you through the crater itself. We got to see a dead jack rabbit, like 5 dead ahhhh-rantula [tarantula] and a live lizard. See pictures. The only thing that would be cool to see them add would be a tower that you could climb to see the crater from above so that you could take a better picture. I understand that cost money to do which is why its prolly not there. . . . yet.

It was a nice stop on the way from Abilene to Carlsbad NP. Not much to see, but theres a lot of science on exhibit inside. Nice short walk if you need a break, and we learned a thing or two. Got a pressed penny for my collection. Oh, and we did not see any dead animals on our visit ;)

It was a nice stop and interesting place to learn about meteorites that land on Earth. The enforcement of faces inside made sure everyone was safely able to observe the displays.

It is a small museum but there is stuff to see. There are restrooms, picnic tables, a short hiking path that goes around the crater. Its easy to get to and it was a nice place to visit and take a break from our road trip. There was no fee when we visited. Its worth the short drive off the highway. Go check it out!

Nothing extraordinary, you can barely notice the crater. Inside the little museum you can see and touch meteors found in different parts of the world. They also sell souvenirs and toys for kids. If you have nothing to do during your visit to Odessa visit the place, about 15 minutes from downtown.

Walk was nice with informative signs along the way. Didnt get to go into museum/gift shop. I went during open hours but no one was there, it is a residence on the back side of the building and saw someone pull up but they wouldnt open the building still.

I stopped alone here in my way to California. On the return trip I stopped with my wife; now we can both say weve seen a real meteor crater. FYI, while driving away note the signs showing the distance of each planet from the sun.

So informative! The museum is little, but can tell you a lot. Tons of meteorite examples from all over the world. They actually have a walking path into the crater itself, which is really cool. It is a small little park, but admission is free. Please consider donating, so more people can see this amazing place! 2nd biggest crater in the US. Lots of wildlife.

May 2020Again, met by a closed gate. Called the number and the machine informed the park will be closed until further notice. Google maps lists it as open.Review from October? 2019:I wish I could give a better review. My husband and i came out here around 4pm on a Sunday, according to their schedule its open till 5pm. we and several other people were met by a closed gate. We called them and only got a mailbox that mentioned their regular schedule. No explanation as to why theyre closed during regular business hours.quite disappointing...Maybe some day well be able to come back and actually see the crater and museum and then give a better review.

Interesting hour for the scientist at heart. 20k years ago the second largest known iron meteor hit the future site of Odessa TX.

Review №33

Neat to stop by, but was underwhelming. Free. Google maps gps will take you right to the location. There is an information center and a trail that you can walk (it goes around 2 craters). However, the exact location and events of the first crater are a little confusing since alot of digging has been done in the area, plus it is suspected that the meteor disintegrated on impact. The information center was interesting and has meteors from all over the world to look at. You can also purchase a souvenir. I feel like this place could be so much more- like maybe add an observation tower so you get that overview of what you are walking through, or even a video of the predicted impact (its hard to imagine). It would also benefit from staff being more informative; staff seemed very bored.

Good little stop to add on a whim. Short hiking trail down into the crater shouldnt take more than 10 minutes, and has a few educational signs with some history and context to what youre seeing. The crater has been naturally filled in to be just 6 ft below the surrounding landscape, so level set your expectations... Museum is small and quirky; lots of meteor-related info and quite a few meteorites on display too. Free admission (donations appreciated) and clean bathrooms.

Review №37

Something different for sure. It might look like just a hole in the ground to some. If you read the signs you start to understand way more. They found prehistoric fossils. There is a small museum with clean restrooms. The admission is free, but donations are acceptable. The person that mans it doesnt talk much, but dont be discouraged to walk around. Enjoy!

I enjoyed the walk through the crater. I stopped and read all the signs and learned some things. My dog came with me, and she tried to chase a big rabbit! I was there on a Sunday though and the building was not open, but that was okay. I believe it is important to see things like this because it is part of history and science. It is only a short ride off the main highway.

Review №43

It was interesting for reasons other than science. Our experience was met with a random guy laying 15 feet from the path, in the crater. My young son thought that he was dead. Thankfully, he was just playing possum and performed some ninja moves with his walking stick. The museum contains meteorite fragments from other regions. The museum itself is pretty boring. We had a better time watching the jackrabbits and quail outside of the building.

How often do you get to see a meteor crater? Lol. Although just a big hole, its cool to see. I was only worried about the sign to watch for snakes lol

Al
Review №53

Went there a few years ago. The lady who runs it berated my parenting. Other tips for travelers:-yes there are warnings for snakes. Stay out of the wilderness and you may never see them.-its surrounded by an oil field, so it may smell of sulfur (eggs)-the crazy woman manager may not be technically racist. She seems to hate white people most.

Right off the highway, free admission, and a 5 minute trail. Its super quirky, and its honestly a great place to stretch your legs out if youre driving that way. You also learn a bit about the actual meteor, but all this aside, you gotta love America and the amount of money, time, and effort that went into preserving such a dinky national natural landmark like this.
