Great lil place to visit . some areas and boarding planes prohibited during our pandemic. Outside area only for now . Still good photo ops . souvenir shop
A small but great museum with good selection of civilian and military aircraft on display. Apart from the aircraft, the small exhibition rooms gave a great overview of historical topics like female aviators, regional aviation, and naval aviation. I could really see that the staff put lots of effort into creating a comprehensive, well maintained, and interesting museum. Also, there were only few visitors in the museum (I went on 3PM Saturday), which allowed me to comfortably interact with exhibits without being disturbed by other people.
Good local museum. Lots of local and military air history. Also a cool place for a small function.
Never had been there before. Such an interesting part of history all in one location . If you are into Aviation you really need to check this place out.
My first time there. My grandson and I had a great time
This was my final stop in Oakland before heading home. It is a smaller museum, but the F-14 out front is what lured me in. Being a big fan of aviation (Naval Aviation in particular) drew me in.While it may not be the Smithsonian, it has lots of character, and lots of appeal. The staff was very courteous, and more than willing to help. I had the please of chewing the fat with a gentleman named Wade for a good while, as I was scouring over the Tomcat and Intruder parked outside. He was a wealth of knowledge with great stories from his time as a crewman during Viet Nam.My next trip back will have time set aside for Wade and company.
Great place to take your kids. I would recommend it to kids that like to work with their hands
Great place to spend time with kids.
This is a neat little museum, right next to the airport. We made plans to stop this time, and we were not disappointed. We got to tour the plane that was used in the Indiana Jones movie. The docent was awesome, and is an actual veteran who served on the Midway and the Oriskany. I highly recommend visiting this museum
Amazing place and friendly people .
You will only believe what is here when you see it!! Staff and experience are fantastic!!
My son and I visited the museum today. It was a lot of fun! My 4 year old loved it. We learned a bit of Aviation history. And Dale the curator was a lot of fun to chat with and very hospitable!
There are too many words to posts and express on here, how wonderful this Aviation Museum was for my grandchildren and me. If you are looking for a great place to take the kids, this is it! They were so excited flying planes over the bay area on the simulator, receiving a pilot license with their photo, taking photos with all of the different planes and memorabilia, going into the air traffic tower and actually hearing what was going on in the airport. There was so much information for our school report, and the staff, all the way from the wonderful Director on down are so engaging and pleasant. You get the royal treatment from Gail, as soon as you walk through the doors, as your first line of contact. My three cant wait to go back. Me too!!
Very inspiring place! It’s like a temple for those who are dreaming about flies and sky !!! Highly recommend!
I enjoyed my visit at the museum. I was very excited to view all the planes on display. The F/A-18 simulator was an amazing thing to do and with the help of Dale, I was able to land my first jet.
Our young children really enjoyed learning about the different kinds of airplanes. The staff was super helpful and went the extra mile to get our lost and found items back to us.
The place was cute but, not maintained well
Great museum if you are an aviation enthusiast, great for kids.
We were impressed with this museum. It’s small but has some very interesting exhibits and is well worth the time. My son particularly liked the F18 VR simulator. Dale gave him preflight instruction and worked him through the whole flight. Well worth the money. There were volunteers willing to answer questions, and they know quite a bit of the history which makes it more interesting. The Jimmy Doolittle room is great. It’s got an excellent model of the USS Hornet. It gives you a sense of how little room the B-25’s had to take off on that raid. I hadn’t realized that Jimmy Doolittle was from Alameda, but I guess that’s one of the reasons the USS Hornet is in Alameda.I particularly liked the A-3. I hadn’t seen one before and this one was in great condition. It’s a beautiful looking plane. The planes are very well maintained. They have an interesting collection of engines, prop and jet. I particularly liked one of the earlier rotary engines from a 30’s mail plane. They have a lounge with some of the coolest chairs I’ve seen. They must be custom, made of airplane aluminum and leather. Too bad they don’t sell them in the gift shop.
Nice little museum with a good variety of both civilian and military aviation history. There are members of the staff who are qualified air crew on multiple of the legacy military aircraft they have and offer excellent history and information.
This is a great air museum with lots of actual civilian & military planes and exhibits about early flight pioneers and other contributors to the history of flight. Some really nice exhibits about African-American pilots (first black female pilot, Tuskegee Airmen of WWII, & more) and female pilots of air and space. This is a very family-friendly museum with several planes for kids to sit in. Lots of things that kids can see and touch up close. At certain times, you can enter the cockpits, although when we went, there were no cockpit times. You can even book the museum for weddings and other events. Its great to see the different larger planes outside to get a perspective of the size and scale as they are sitting near each other. Even the staff and tour guides have a great passion for planes. If you love planes, youll like this museum.
Very cool. Great History. Lots of learning & more
Was a great place with so many different things to see & experience. Awesome people that were so helpful & eager to share their knowledge. Loved the F/A-18 simulator. Couldve flown it all day. Spent whole day there & loved every minute.
Amazing to have so many wonderful aircraft so accessible! Visiting is ridiculously affordable, and OMG a real F-14 of Top Gun fame is HUGE!
Great little museum in Oakland. Kind of a hidden gem since its not right off the highway, blink and youll miss it. Has a great variety though! Also within in view of Oakland Intl. if youre an aviation enthusiast!
This has got to be the most awesome place i have ever went to. Its is such a great experience to see all the planes up so close and all the hard work tat they staff has done definitely paid off. Thank you for giving me and my family such a great day
This place has a lot of heart and some great aircraft on display. Great for all ages for about an hour.
Truly a hidden jem! I cant tell you how many times I have driven past the museum and have seen the F-14 and wondered about the rest of it. They have some amazing exhibits. Charles Lindberg dedicated the airport facility in 1927. Our Docent Dale had some great information and stories. In his picture (hes wearing a gray t-shirt) thats him in the picture on the wall on the USS Eriskony during the Vietnam War. The whole staff was very friendly. Prices are reasonable too. Highly recommended!
We had an incredible time at the Oakland Aviation Museum!! It is so worth the trip! Dale shared amazing stories with us and let my son fly the simulator! All the staff were so welcoming and friendly. We’re from out of state but already looking forward to another visit on a return trip!
Small but great aviation museum near the Oakland Airport Car Rental Facility. There are indoor displays showing the history of aviation, especially locally. There are aircraft parked both inside and outside which include military and civilian.Tours of a flying bost are available.Parking is free but admission required.Snacks, sodas and gifts are available in the gift shop at the entrance/exit.
Small but amazing. Cant believe I just drive by for so many years
I am a volunteer there so I am biased. The staff I volunteers are friendly and are proud of our facility. There are some interesting exhibits starting with the Short Solent flying boat. Open cockpit days are lots of fun!
This is a hidden gem in the east bay, close to Oakland International Airport. Friendly staff and free parking. You can enjoy a leisurely visit of historic aviators and aircraft. There are a variety of aircraft in a hanger and more aircraft outside including the Silent flying boat. The last one in existence. I highly recommend the weekend tour of the flying boat. Dale the docent is terrific, so knowledgeable about the flying boat and the history of this craft. Have a great visit and learn about aviation history.
Well curated exhibition, interesting aircraft and details about the history of people and organisations that used to use the airport. Right by the hire car centre; check your bags in and get a good seat early, visit the museum for an hour or so then drop the hire car off.
Had a great visit and got to see the planes so up close. Thanks!
Great collection of light planes and navy Jets. Benny displays and things for all ages Grandpa and his four-year-old grandson both enjoyed it very much
Nice people great museum!!
The display of some different aircraft was nice but the real feature is the actual F18 flight simulator and talking to the staff who were all there and lived with the planes.
Great museum for aviation history. Take the flying boat tour to see travel in the 30s.
The docents at this museum are very knowledgeable
Great museum. Interesting facts and individual background for each aircraft. Their large hydroplane starred in a Indiana Jones movie.
Wanted to go to a museum and after a quick search stumbled upon the Oakland Aviation Museum. Upon entering we were greeted immediately by a friendly face and was given a quick overview of what we were going to find. After walking in and getting the rules we found many old planes with information in front of them. There are also old engines, helicopters, and military planes. If you dont read the plaques and information youll get through this one pretty quickly. Personally, I like to read everything so it took me a bit longer.Sure the planes, parts, models, and other things are really cool but let me tell you about the gem in this place. His name is Dale. I dont want to give it all away, but Dale knows his stuff. I had a question about the Skywarrior and not only did he answer it for me, he started to tell me more stories and just showed me things and pointed out other things that I merely glanced over. The man is full of knowledge and I really enjoyed talking with him and listening to what he had to say.For those who want to get into the planes they do have a open cockpit days which are listed on their website. You can bet Ill be back for that!I went for the planes and left with so much more.
Amazing place! I only had less than an hour to explore, but the displays are breath taking. Especially the outdoor portion of the museum. Im definitely coming back when I have more time to properly enjoy.
Was there for a work meeting. Great place to have as a venue. The planes and environment were really nice.
Interesting museum, it was cool to see a variety of airplanes all together. Theres a small section out front where little kids can climb and play, but other than that its a lot look-dont-touch.
Nice museum. Not tooooo polished.
Had never been, went to my sons graduation from air plane mechanic school...really cool place!
Old place but great collection. VR enabled simulation is a must to try. Easy 2 hour time pass
Great place to learn some history
It’s a cool piece of history. the indiana jones plane is cool.
The Oakland Aviation Museum is a great place. It has many aircrafts inside and outside. Also twice a year you can go inside all the planes. Lots of history to learn there.
Nice place to visit.
A good start for a small museum. Needs a broader selection of artifacts. If you have a few minutes to kill check it out
Great visit, please go and enjoy alone or with your family. Take a tour to visit the water boat.
It was a very nice expierence and educational aswell al thanks to the old man with all respect
Great place! We have been twice and one was open cockpit day. A good collection of planes and the staff are very friendly. It is a casual pleasant atmosphere with staff that know allot about the planes.
Very fun place for the history buffs. Informed and welcoming staff
Really sweet guides, but we wish they had more open cockpit days.
Super cool place, take the kids or go alone.. awesome place to learn something new
Really cool and informational. The volunteer staff has a really good knowledge of everything there.
There are a variety of planes from general aviation to military aviation. Some of the planes you can actually climb into and sit in the cockpit. There is even a sea plane there that was used in the filming of Raiders of the Lost Ark and you can walk through this plane also.
Friendly people lots of room. Catch it on open cockpit days. Music food and then free parking
Very peaceful great people very kind well go back
Good museum with alot of good Oakland aviation history
What an awesome place to spend a few hours!
Wonderful place to spend a few hours getting lost in aviation history.
Loved the experience....Dale was very knowledgeable and Gayle is awesome too. Ty
Small but still good place to visit. Not exciting for young kids.
A great museum indoors and out. Its never crowded and most importantly the volunteers really want you to see the planes. It feels less like a museum and more like stopping over at your uncles house who happens to have an amazing collection of planes.
A great look into local aviation history. Open cockpit day is humming!
It was an awesome experience and Dale was very knowledgeable and helpful.
Great place for people interested in aviation history.
The snow for very knowledgeable and passionate about their amazing Museum
A lot of information. I missed the inside plane experience. Its only a few times during the year.
Very family friendly, informative, conveniently located, easily navigated aviation museum, with co-located free parking. Close to Oakland airport, its outdoor spaces, with benches and a picnic table, allow for watching OAK airport departures. Includes childrens play area with mock air traffic control tower at entrance. Aircraft on display include civilian and military planes, with Top Gun fans favorite fighter jet, an F-14 Tomcat. Among the various indoor educational experiences are exhibits on African Americans in Aviation, with dedications to the Tuskegee Airmen; Women in Aviation, emphasizing the 99ers, and aviatrix pioneers Amelia Earhart and Bessie Coleman; and Doolittles Raiders/WWII. There is an entrance fee, and a small gift shop, with fun and interesting aviation related items for purchase. We visited on a Sunday morning, and a group of local model railroad enthusiasts were setting up a model train display in the theatre area. Venue is available for event rentals. We brought a family membership after seeing it on Groupon; very affordable.
Lots of great history to learn about. Its worth paying the $5 extra to tour the Solent (flying boat; used in filming Raiders of the Lost Ark). That was our favorite part and the guide was very knowledgable. Go and help support the museum. Its all volunteer-staffed.
Wow. Very interesting collection. Well presented. Friendly, committed staff. Plan to spend a few hours to explore. Do the tour of the flying boat.
RACIST PEOPLE WORK HERE! I want to give negative rating to this place due to my horrible experience; my family along with couple of my friends family visited this place few months ago. The museum was almost empty. One of the museum staff gave a tour of the flying boat and requested donation. While coming out my friends bought about 5 toys from the store and paid for it. I didnt buy any toy and started walking out. The staff in the store came to me and said I see you sneaking out without making any donation. I told him donation is given at will, you cant demand for it. He started using bad (f**k) words and scolding me. I shouted at him saying you cant demand donation. Then he said they will never take any tours for INDIANs; I felt so ashamed and told him he has no rights to talk about all INDIANs. He said he will call the cops. I said I am ready to talk to cops. Then he went back to the museum. This was a horrible/hurting experience for the whole group of people. I still couldnt digest that he insulted my country and its people. I hope the management of this museum will take some action regarding this feedback and keep these kind of racist jerks/money suckers away!
Very interesting great history and impressive collection of planes
Not huge but definitely cool to be able to get do close to all the airplanes.
I love the Shorts Solent Flying Boat.Im a big fan of Naval Aviation. And I volunteer here, up on the Snorkelift, pressure washing the planes...
Friendly, helpful staff...beautiful, rare aircraft...lots of history...
Definitely worth for kids.
Very cool place to learn about aviation history
