Great trip! Nice boat ride into the harbor out to Sheffield lighthouse. Tour of lighthouse, covered pavilion to enjoy lunch (pack and bring with you). Can walk around the perimeter or sit in an Adirondack chair and relax. Boat ride back to the dock. Trip is about 3 hours. Great staff...polite and friendly. Nice way to spend a relaxing day.

A pleasant four hour excursion and tour. If you venture into the bird sanctuary during the summer, wear pants and Deet to protect against mosquitoes. I highly recommend the food and entertainment oriented events. Chat with Patty at the ticket booth while you wait for the ferry, shes a great resource.Chat with Patty at the ticket booth while you wait for the ferry, shes a great resource.

Great tour, packed with interesting info that even as a Norwalk native, I was not aware of! I strongly recommend spending a few relaxing hours enjoying one of the best things Norwalk has to offer!Pack a lunch or grab a hot dog on the island and head out to Sheffield Island!

Nice relaxing way to spend an afternoon, especially on summer days. The ferry ride is relaxing and then you can tour the island at your leisure. We filled a sandwich sized back with seaglass! Beautiful views and a small snack stand is on the island but you can also bring your own food and beverage. They host an annual pirate day which I hear is fun for the kids.

Its a nice place with beautiful views, but during this trip the mosquitos were horrible. Thats the only reason I gave it a lower score.

Pretty cool. Till dusk!! Ive never been attacked by so many mosquitoes in my life! And I spray painted myself with insect repellent... three times! The owners really need to invest in pest control.

Very friendly staff! But the guided lighthouse tour was disappointedly short (~15min). We were then left to our own device the entire rest of the time on the very small island, and we personally spent that time skipping rocks on the windiest beach as it was the only place to escape the relentless mosquito swarms.

Only accessible by ferry, this is a delightful picnic area to relax in for an hour with views of Long Island, but I recommend a good bug spray in the summer. The paths leading around the island are untended and overgrown. The concession stand next to the lighthouse has the lunch basics available at reasonable prices.

The only reason why I didnt give 5 stars is because they only give you an hour and half to tour the Island/light house and then you MUST head back. Even though you want to stay longer, you cant. They do head count on the ferry from there and going back. The ferry round trip cost of $29 per person. Overall, the Island/light house itself was beautiful and enjoyed so much sitting next to the water and by the rocks. Took tons of pictures as well. Staff were so friendly, helpful, nice and very knowledgeable. I only wish if we could stay there longer. Hour and half was too short period of time.

Nice ferry ride. They need to brush up on the script for the tour guide on the boat. Time on the island is a little short. Be prepared to feed the mosquitoes.

Well worth the trip. We enjoyed the ferry ride to and from the island with the running commentary on the sights. It was very educational. Once at the island we had a nice walk to view wildlife and scenery. We took a tour of the light house. Be aware there are biting flies and ticks so bring bug repellant. Make sure you have a camera. Lots to see

So worth it!!! We traveled with my kids 4 and 16 months and they had a blast. I had taken a few toys and a couple of books just Incase they needed them in he ferry ride but we didn’t need a single toy they were super entertained and had so much fun and can’t believe that living in Norwalk we hadn’t come here before. The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating - we had a stroller - I totally recommend it + it was an extremely relaxing trip - wow.

Nice little trip for the family to go out on the water, views are pretty, but you can find yourself easily bored after the first hour on the island so I would bring food for a picnic.

The Sheffield Island lighthouse ferry is such a fun, lovely, classic new england way to spend a summer afternoon, 10/10 would recommend. Its a unique casual outing for friends/families/couples/kids. I live in Stamford, about 20 minutes away and cannot believe I hadnt heard about this earlier. I managed to catch the last ferry of the 2018 season (note the calendar posted on the Norwalk Seaport Association website) and cant wait for next year to do this again!Getting there/parking:I had originally plugged in the Norwalk Seaport Association address into maps, but the ferry itself is actually just over the little bridge. We parked for free across the street from the Seaport Association and walked over, but there is also a paid parking lot immediately in front of the ferry departure. We arrived about 5 minutes in advance and bought tickets at the booth without any issues. They accept credit and cash, and you can sit anywhere on the ferry. Our trip had about 30-40 folks, including some older people and young kids (toddlers). The ferry ride:So relaxing! The ferry takes a leisurely pace up through to Sheffield Island, about a 40 minute ride. The ride is smooth, and we were able to stand up and walk around the ferry if we wanted to. I think this would honestly be fine for anyone sensitive to motion/sea sickness. There are usually a lot of small boats and tiny islands in that area, and its nice to sit back and catch a breeze. On the return trip, the captain took us on an extra loop to better see the Manhattan and New Rochelle skylines which were visible on the horizon. Such a cool experience, and I had no idea it could be seen all the way from Norwalk!Sheffield Island:The tour of the historic lighthouse was really interesting, and its clear that a lot of effort and love went into setting this place up and restoring it. When we went, the lighthouse was under renovation, but an amazing fantastic volunteer snuck my husband and I up, and what a treat! The staircases/ladders were narrow but the views up there were absolutely stunning and so worth it! It was a clear beautiful day and we could see the water, the coast, the sound, and the Manhattan skyline off in the distance. Absolutely amazing. I dont think theres any other view quite like it.We had a few hours to ourselves on the island, and since the lighthouse tour was just about 30-40 minutes, there was plenty of time to walk along the shore. There was lots of sea glass, shells, and even a few horseshoe crabs. The shore is a little too rocky to actually enter the water, but there are lots of boulders to sit on and enjoy the view, and its very peaceful. Even with a full ferry, the island was not crowded at all and we could spend some time sitting on the benches, chatting, walking around at our leisure. There were picnic tables set up, as well as a nature walk (sadly closed due to ticks, but well have to do that next year)Tips/advice:- Bring a camera! Trust me youre going to want to take a lot of photos of the view from the lighthouse tower.- Book tickets in advance, online, since the ferries can be filled up.- The ramp is a bit steep, so if youre bringing kids, bring a small portable stroller, since bulky might be a little heavy to push up.- Wear rugged slip-resistant shoes, since the shore is quite rocky.- Pack a picnic! I think you can even BYOB. Some lemonade, a caprese sandwich, some olives, while enjoying the view...perfection.All in all, a fantastic experience that I cant wait to share with family and friends!!
