Great road side attraction. Very informative and interesting for all. Not necessarily just for train buffs. So amazing when you think about the role trains play in our economy and the shuttering of goods from coast to coast! The staff was extremely knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. If you turn right out the parking lot you can drive right by the East Hump... which is actually to the west ironically! Very worthwhile stop!
Lots of information, they even give you a labeled photo of the train yard so you know what you are looking at. I had a lovely chat with a gentleman about the sand towers, not even sure if he was a fan or an employee. The gift shop is well stocked with a wide variety of items. The bathrooms are clean and look like new.
For those who are fascinated with the workings of a rail yard, this is the place to be. Having worked a few years earlier in Bailey Yard, I was familiar with its general operation and was able to explain to my wife different things about the yard. However, I was told there is frequently a volunteer who enjoys to talk about the yard and answer questions. The view from the top of the tower is about the best you will have of the yard and the Platte Rivers valleys unless you fly over the town. They have some excellent displays and a nice little shop. The folks that work there are very friendly and informed. We were able to dry camp there with our RV. Interestingly, with the typical western NE ‘breeze’, we slept comfortably. Retarders would occasionally wake us up, but that was short lived. All part of ‘camping’ near a railroad. There was social distancing and limits regarding using the elevator. The cost was very reasonable and we do look forward to stopping back by there again.
We visited in a beautiful day during a cross country trip. I work for the railroad, but my husband wanted to see what it was all about. The facilities were very nice and clean. Staff was friendly and kind. We explored and had a picnic lunch there. Recommend stopping by, it was a nice break from our long road trip.
Fantastic place! To see how the hump yard can sort the cars from an inbound train to make up complete trains going to all directions in order for every car to be in the correct order on the correct outbound train and do that with thousands of rail cars each day is just amazing. There was a retired engineer in the tower who took the time to answer all my questions and explain to us the complicated process. If I lived in the area I would go there frequently
Excellent presentation of current operations as well as local history. Wonderful and knowledgeable staff!
This is a piece of American history every family should see! It was a fun, educational visit for the spouse of any train lover. I was not bored at all while my husband found his inner child. I will admit, it was relaxing to watch the trains be sorted in the yard.
Cool gift shop and very friendly staff but the view isnt really worth it unless you bring binoculars.
If you like trains youll love this place. Great observation deck. They did a good job with their gift shop.
Had the best volunteer, Eldon, explaining what we were seeing and he was NEVER stumped by any of our frequent and varied questions. Learned a lot in an entertaining way and wonderful views of the area as well as the train yard.
Amazing view of the worlds largest train yard! Well done and immensely interesting! We spent several hours watching all the train activity
Good stop along I-80. Im not really into trains, but the history and views from the observation tower make it worth the visit.
Love being able to view the huge operation of the worlds largest railway interchange. The Golden Spike Tower gives you great views and explanations for the operations that take place there. Great place to visit!
Enjoyed our visit there. Good view. Few there when we were which was great. Staff courtesy was fine
If youre a train or industrial afficionado, this is an eagles eye view of a very large switch yard. (marshalling yard for you Brits).the 7th floor open view area is spacious and has great views.gift shop on the 1st floor, friendly staff, very nice.
It is cool if you have never been. If you are in town it is worth checking out. I think if you like trains or want to learn more it is very cool! The people working today were absolutely wonderful!
Ive always loved trains my whole life, so this is the place for me! There is a nice gift shop, and for 50 cents you can watch the train go around it. The tower has great views of Baily yard in action! If youre in the area, stop in, the price us right. I do have one bone to pick; the tower guide had to bring up politics. He could have blamed environmental regulations instead of Obama. There are people from all over the country who come to visit, not just conservatives.
The Golden Spike Tower is an 8 story structure overlooking the Bailey train yards. There is a charge to go up and watch the activity in yard. Tickets are sold in their gift shop. If you are lucky a volunteer will greet you and teach you about the workings of the yard. Here they assemble trains as long as three miles long. Trains travel both east and west from this yard. Worth a visit.
Wonderful exhibit by Union Pacific. Very friendly staff and very informative. The guide in the top of the tower answered all the questions we had and the displays inside the tower building was just awesome! Thank you, UP!** After the reply below to what I didnt know...kudos to ALL that make this happen. I was uninformed and didnt intentionally leave anyone out or discredit anyone.**
The front desk was very kind and it was an amazing view. I suggest talking to the man upstairs who has worked in the railroad business since the 50s and has been retired for 16 years. Hes very knowledgeable.
Great place for anyone who likes trains....soaring above the plains, you can see for miles in any direction. Gary was a great tour guide, full of knowledge and experience and brought to life what was happening in the UP yard. Seeing that mile long coal train was amazing. As well as all the different types of locomotives in the yard. 7th floor balcony was a great idea and allowed for some amazing pictures...watching the cars roll down the tracks from the humps was very cool.
So much train history in one place. A full souvenir shop on the 1st floor, an outdoor observation deck and a 360° top floor observation deck. Anyone with even a slight interest in trains will appreciate coming here.
What a sweet place to visit. A man named Lynn spoke with me for quite some time about all sorts of local railroad history and current events. He should know, he retired 12 years ago after 40 years employed with the railroad!
We loved our visit to the rail yard and the history we learned through their displays.
Ive loved trains since I was a kid. to me this was an awesome experience. The staff where awesome as well
A very nice stop along any road trip. The railways look so much cooler from the tower. Don’t miss it. The bathrooms and gift shop is spotlessly clean and the employees are friendly and knowledgeable.
Great place to visit! Plan to spend some time learning how the rail yard works. Watch the short orientation video before going up the tower.
Such a fun place to go to learn about trains and see the largest train yard for the Union Pacific. They have extremely knowledge docents who love to talk about trains and answer any question you may have. Definitely a fun stop for all ages. Fully accessible.
If you train enthusiasts or not this is a great attraction on your way out west. This my second time here and it always amazes me. I added a picture of the Big Boy locomotive because it was parked at the North Platte station. A sight to behold.
I really enjoyed stopping here for both modern and historical views of the railroads.
This was delicious and the pasta is unlimited and they are handiling the virus well and the food was inexpensive I would recommend this place to any one Also there was no wait and the decorating was cool I really like it
We were amazed by the site. This is one of the largest yards in North America. It was fascinating to watch the train cars move. The docents are past Union Pacific employees. Their explanations and insight were a key factor in our enjoyment and understanding. It was at the Visitor Center we learned about The North Platte Canteen. While we didnt make it there on this trip the story of how the North Platte residents greeted trains and provided refreshments to troops during WWII was touching.
What an awesome place! Really informative and interesting. Not crowded.
Very neat place. We found the Golden Spike Tower and Rail sorting yard along our trip east. We parked our camper in the gravel and went in to see what the tower had in store for us. From the top of the tower you overlook the largest sorting yardwoth 40+ tracks running east and west and all being sorted on this one track. Great stopping point. With one of our camping apps that we use we were able to stay overnight here. Great thought but the wheel brakes squeal all night. I of course heard nothing but my wife didnt sleep at all.
A beautiful view and the staff was friendly and very knowledgeable.
100% worth the $8 or whatever it was for the trip to the top. Im a huge wimp about heights, but this offered a great view of the area. Some neat history on the top level too.
This is quite the sight to behold. 8.5 miles of train yard by 2+ miles wide. There is a nominal fee to go up to the observation decks but its worth the price. There really is no reason to go if you do not go up. Dont pass up the opportunity to see the largest train yard in the world if youre any where close. Oh by the way, they are dog friendly!!
Nest place to go and see. Very knowledgeable staff. Fun to watch rail cars and locomotives move around.
My son wants to stop here every time we drive through North Platte. We originally found it from the Nebraska passport 2019. The volunteers are very friendly and knowledgeable.
Great family pit stop! My kids loved it and staff was very knowledgeable.
Great place learned a few things would like more information on how the train system works.
The CEO doesnt like Humps, so he closed down one of the lines. Made it harder to see anything. A lot less trains and cars in the yard.
Good place to go if your a rail buff or fan.
Such a cool place to visit! The staff and volunteers do a great job explaining everything that happens on the yard. The gift shop has lots of great options and everything is clean and displayed very well! Absolutely worth a visit, or maybe several!
I liked that they had an experienced railroad man at the top to answer questions. Cool place for a RR buff.
Good stop, if you are traveling through I-80 Nebraska with kids.
Great place lots if interesting stuff
Stopped in to buy my boyfriend an engineers cap. Learned this is largest hump yard in the world. I never knew that when I lived in North Platte Nebraska.
Very nice facility. The building may not be golden, but the view from the 7th floor certainly is.
Great place to see Bailey Yard and all of the Union Pacific Trains.
Well worth the $7. lots to learn, interesting.
A very fun attraction, but it only attracts a niche crowd.
This is absolutely an amazing place, the staff does a wonderful job of making you feel welcome, and you can watch trains all day coming and going there is non stop activity all the time.
This is a really cool place for all ages. The guides are really informative about the place and everything that goes on. I really enjoyed both the inside view and the outside View. The gift shop is really neat again it has something for all ages. If youre ever in North Platte its a must-see place.
Great visit. Learned a lot from the retired railroad worker.
Great info available. Video on N P Canteen was exceptional.
Great place to bring kids and watch trains. Super friendly and helpful staff.
Great place and very nolgable.
Dont like to wait for undetermined amount of time. Need better markers to find it.
Website wasn’t up to date with their times and how long you could be there and receptionist was incredibly rude. Other than that, the view of the yard is stunning.
The Golden Spike Tower is great. Up the tower there are former employees of the railroad and they have so much interesting information and are very friendly. It was easy to actually see the rail cars being sorted and rolling to their assigned train. We got there near closing and they kept place open til we were finished
So beautiful and such a friendly staff
This is a great place to view the trains in action as well as get educated on train history. They have a place to watch a video, two viewing areas, a gift shop and very clean restrooms.
Decent stop, but paying for the observation deck is a bit overpriced to basically just look out over a train yard. Little to no information about the golden spike, and I had to do a google search to find out the actual golden spike was placed in Utah, not Nebraska.
I guess if you like trains it is great. $7 for adults. Very clean, good views.
If you like trains, this is your mecca! Bring your camera and a lunch and enjoy the view, lots to see here the volunteers in the tower are former Union Pacific employees and have lots of stories. A train lovers stop for sure!
Cool place if you like trains and nice folks to talk with
Great place to see trains, the observation deck was fantastic.
Good roadtrip stop. Cool views, friendly insightful staff.
Amazing view of trains, great service and unique items for sale.
Amazing view of Bailey Yard with active rail action including two distinct hump yards and multiple arrival and departure yards.
We have been before and it is the best-kept secret in Nebraska. The Tower has great views and there are so many items that young people will have no idea about. Well worth the time to stop in and take a look.
Well worth the time and money to visit whether you love trains or are wanting to see how it works this will have you talking. It has the history of the Railroad and North Platte to go along with all the action in the rail yard. Volunteers answer questions while youre in the tower and the work never ends outside. We spent over an hour and a half and could have stayed longer. A must see for train lovers!!
Love visiting here top notch front desk and volunteers
It was nice to see how they sort cars.
Looks good from outside. Drove by while at work at Bailey Yard. But thanks for asking.
North Platte is so lucky to have the Golden Spike!!! Everyone is so friendly!
A great view of Bailey Yards!
An interesting stop! My husband loves trains so he really enjoyed the views from the tower. The workers were friendly and knowledgeable...though one worker (STILL a super sweet person) was a teeny bit too friendly and kept trying to hold our baby...we appreciated all of their information and great customer service
Amazing place, words cannot describe how awesome it is.
Reasonable prices and very clean and lots of information
Nice view & some nice memorabilia plus some good history
A must see for train enthusiasts everybody else could miss it.
If you like trains, this is the place.
Very nice and very friendly people
Great view of switching yard.
Learned at of history I didnt know
Just a little off I-80 not too far, but well worth it to see a working train yard from tower and interesting small museum
I went here with some family. Staff was super nice and told us everything we needed to know. The facility was great and so were the views. I learned so much new stuff.
Nice place. Free coffee while your browse around the gift shop and up in Golden Spike Tower. Wheelchair access as well.
It was great to have an observation tower to view the rail yard.
A reminder of the importance of trains then and now. We took time to watch videos and read the exhibits. We werent aware of the Orphan Train before.
Very cool, so affordable, could spend all day
Downstairs is primarily a gift shop, but youll come for the observation decks. One enclosed to protect you from the wind and rain, the other open for better photographs. Great view of the yards. There were some RR old timers there who could answer questions. Bring binoculars, if you can. Theres a couple telescopes you can use for a small charge. You have a good view of both hump yards and will likely see them in use.
If you love trains this is the place to go . It is a train viewing heaven ! The staff is very very knowledgable about anything you can see from this tower. Had a great time here and got a lot of great pictures . Would visit this place again if I ever got the chance!!
Despite seeming like a boring middle-america attraction, this place surprised us. The staff were extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the railyard. The guide on the top floor was amazing and we had a great time talking to him. The building seemed very new and well kept. Well worth the short jaunt off of I-80.
If a person is truly interested in trains you can learn a lot the last time we were there there was a conductor who had retired and told us a lot about what went on in the rail yard also have a nice little gift shop
