What a great place but you have to search for it. It is small but you can climb on the two trains and explore the steam engine. A great tour guide is there when open. My wife and I had a great time.
The train display is very good. The ability to enter the steam and diesel engines and the mail car etc was definitely worth the trip. Would have liked to see more of the artifacts, but decided not to go in the museum due to the virus.
My family loved it there and the Challenger is on display. Mr John was a wonderful host and spent guality time explaining everything. Must place to visit
Fantastic! I didnt even know it was there - we came across it by accident. If youre a train nut - or even if you arent - definitely worth a visit. Its free (donations accepted) and the folks working there are super nice. Of course, the best part is being able to view the steam and diesel locomotives - you can even go in both cabs!
Free train museum with a large steam and a large diesel locomotives which you are aloud to climb aboard and tour. Its a small part of the greater park. If you are road tripping with kids like we were and need a break, this is a perfect stop.
So this is a bit of a mixed review. The site is the very back of Cody Park in a bit hard to find if youre not from the area. But it is very well worth the visit. very few places can you see a beautifully detailed Union Pacific Challenger locomotive or a Union Pacific DDX diesel engine. the site includes several box cars and Passenger cars with a very cute Museum that you walk through between two passenger cars. There is also a station house that has bathrooms and an attendant. I feel in some ways that the museum was a bit of an afterthought is a place to store the locomotives and I wish there was a bit more presentation. The museum display itself is unescorted and you just walk through without much interpretation going on. for a small Museum they have several incredible artifacts that should be seen so dont let that prevent you from visiting. Expect to spend about an hour at this place. Excellent photo ops!
You have to see these locomotives! Sheer size alone will leave you in awe! Very nice place to pack a picnic lunch and enjoy these majestic giants that helped make America what she is today!
This is fun if you like trains.
Thanks John for the personalized tour. Amazing exhibits and worth the detour.
Very clean and playful park to be at. Love the train and the knowledge behind it, just wish there were doors on the bathroom
Absolutely a great piece of history to visit. Union Pacific and the City of North Platte should be applauded for their work and upkeep of this great display. There is the engine that you can go into, pulling a mail car, that you can go through and look at the displays provided, all the way to the caboose that is just awesome for ANY train enthusiast. Next door is a diesel engine set up with cargo type cars and even though you cannot go into the railcars, you can walk the catwalk of the engine and actually sit in the conductors seat and view what they view going down the tracks. Wonderful. A big Thank you to all who makes this happen!
Another very informative and interesting free museum in North Platte. We have visited here multiple times now and I enjoy it every single time. Only open during the warm season, May to Sept so be aware when you try to visit.
Nice and well maintained display. Had a great time here! Loved that I could go inside the train cars and even sit in the conductors seat. Thoroughly enjoyed my time here.
Well kept. Fantastic park around the area. Lakes. Ball fields. Can go in both locomotives, mail cars and caboose.
I love looking at trains. Very informative
For a self lead attraction, I thought this was a great place for the kids to see a touch of the past.
Was wonderful getting to see a fairly well preserved steam engine of this size. Also having a Centennial right next door and being able to check out the cab was impressive. You really cant get a sense of the immense size of these once great iron giants until right next to them.
Nice quick stop off 80. Kids loved the locomotives. You can go inside both and its all free!
Excellent place to get up close and personal with the locomotives! And it is totally free! However, leaving donations is a must, since Im sure its all volunteers that run it, and it takes a lot to keep them running. Thank you North Platte
What an amazing place! Loved going thru the cars!!
Awesome place to bring the kids!
Really fun to go inside the train cars and learn some history about the railroad.
Lots of fun. Really enjoyed walking through the locomotives and rail cars.
We love taking the tour and climbing all around in the restored trains.
Not a single update made in years to this display. Want people to visit the display? Give them something new once in awhile to look at.
Exciting to see again and again and again.
Nice small museum
Good display, go see it!
Love this place come see it
A nice little destinatiin if you happen to be in the area. If you are not a lover of trains it might not be worth driving to only for this. It is pretty neat walking through the old trains though it doesnt take too long. The museum is very small, but it was staffed by a kind woman the day we walked through.
Very Cool, nice people and learned interesting things about Trains; they allow you to climb up on them as well :)
Amber took my boys into there and they had a really good time setting on the driving seat of the train acting like they was driving and running through the train and I just loved
We spent part of our 55 th anniversary there and enjoyed looking at the train.
This place has LOT of Class. Highly recommended. Very friendly lady at the Depot.
Liked being able to see upclose the locomotive and rail cars
As a railroad fan it is always nice to be able to physically touch pieces of history such as these
Took our group here on our way East from Ogden and loved the up close access to the Challenger
Awesome to see. Lots of goose droppings and dog poo, wish it had been cleaner. The displays on the trail are cool. The mail car is awesome.
Awesome you can enter the cab of a Challenger and the DD40!!!
Full of history. Such a neat place.
One of North Plattes fun and free experiences! Climb up into several different historic train engines and cars. Postal cars complete with mail bags and slots for mail throughout nebraska and colorado, bathrooms, sinks, storage, beds.... lots of ways to view the history of past railroad workers. My kids loved it here, as did I!
Nice museum. Largest train weve seen.
A great visit for train lovers.
An excellent chance see railroad history, the UP 3977 Challenger 4-6-6-4 is one of two left and the cab is available to the public. The 6922 DD40X diesel is an awesome sight and the cab is also open to the public. The original Hershey depot is full of history, as are the passenger cars/caboose being pulled by the two-tone gray challenger steam locomotive. The 3977 was built in June of 1943 - stop and visit us in North Platte Nebraska.
Fun little stop. It wont take a ton of time to climb around on the trains and look at things, but there are a few playgrounds nearby if you are looking for something to get the kids out of your hair.
Great place for young kids, always a peaceful place to have fun
Nice setup with just a couple of trains. Maybe not worth a stop if you are just driving past, but well worth it if you happen to be staying in town.
They need historian ppl that can answer questions
Always a great way to spend fun easy time with your family and friends take a stroll through Cody Park lots to see and do together as a family.
Was a great place to explore.
Its pretty small but the steam engine train one of the only ones in the world its a huge steam engine you can climb into it while Im into the maol car friends are going to the passenger cars even the Caboose its pretty awesome The Wheels on the steam engine Drive are five feet high
Little hidden gem in North Platte. Get to see inside the cabs of the desiel and steam engine and the cars on display. Small but great and free.
Fun place for Train enthusiast.
My daughter loves this place. Its great just to have a little get away.
My son loves trains, and so this place was perfect to visit and be able to go inside of the trains and see what they looked like inside.
Awesome displays and its free
People were so kind and welcoming. Amazing store
Its small but worth the effort if your a train lover.
Great in person experience with the trains.
Nice park with a lot of activities. Platte river, train museum, ice cream, swimming pool, tennis courts and more
Unique trains. Even a small station office. Worth the visit.
Always enjoy going and learning about the past
A great place to learn and teach your kids about steam or oil engine. Its free and you can see a close up of the engineers control. This is no tourist trap, but unfortunately someone broke one of the gages inside. Thats why we end up paying for every thing, in order to compensate the expenses of those irresponsible people.
Great historic museum. Love the rolling post office.
Always awesome to see pieces of history. The yellow engine has artifacts in it and its in Cody Park, which is full of animals, ice cream, a kiddie carnival and all the fun times.
Great experience for kids and railroad enthusiasts. Free too!
We loved the trains. A lot of information
Great place for families.
Love the Big boy loco
If you like trains this is the place for you. Up close and unfettered access to all items including the incredible 1 million pound 4 6 6 4 Challenger
Great place, especially for free. Great for kids and adults.
Great place to visit. Up close view of trains you cant usually get close to. Their Railroad Days in Sept is a great event also.
Great place to take kids
