Dress warm in October or stay below! We came straight from the beach and should have worn warmer clothing for the windy day. But my boys loved seeing all the boats up close And learning the facts. Luckily they had hot cider & cocoa below that we could drink to warm up. We did purchase the Fleet card so my boys could review all the stats the guide gave during the tour. But now dad wants to look at all the cool facts and has commandeered the sheet!
A pretty fun experience for all, with one caveat. If you sit on the top deck, expect to hear maybe half of what the tour guide is saying. The entire top deck is served by a single small speaker that can only be heard when the boat isn’t moving. Add that to the fact that a lot of people talk to each other up top and you can’t barely make our half of what is said through the speaker. Please upgrade the sound system. The captain did a great job steering in large boat wakes, the ride was incredibly smooth overall.
Very cool experience. I would recommend this tour to anyone. It was really neat to see all the ships we saw and have them explained. The tour was interesting and informative. I had a great time.
2 hours goes by fast! Great info on the way out to the Naval Base and a peaceful ride back. The lower deck is inside and nice and cold in summer time. A drink/snack counter with very reasonable prices. Upper deck is nice and open with both covered and uncovered areas.
What a wonderful tour. We were able to see our sons ship in port. The retired Sailor on todays crew took our photo with our sons ship in the background! Lots of dolphins along the way. Amazing experience overall!
Important: the ticket window is NOT at this place - its a window on the external facade of the Nauticus building. Before you enter the building, turn left and walk along the wall and youll find it. Or you can ask someone in the Nauticus building, theyre all friendly. The tour itself was great but not as thrilling as I thought. Mainly a bunch of destroyers.
Extremely informative. Very well worth the money. Up to date with all ships and information. Very cautious of COVID precautions. Beautiful ship and very clean. Would definitely do it again!
The Victory Rover Naval Base Cruise was fantastic. We thoroughly enjoyed everything about it. Highly recommend if youre visiting in the Virginia Beach/Norfolk area. Well worth the price.
This is AWESOME and we highly recommend it!! Informative, enjoyable, and even saw a few dolphins! The only way to see all the naval ships up close! All ages of our crew enjoyed it and learned a lot. Get there early to sit up top (no masks required there) and to get a seat in the shade (not all seats up top are in the shade). Wonderful!!
Took a great tour of the harbor and Navy base. They are very informative about the area, along with all of the Navy ships we go past. The ship is very clean and in great shape. Would definitely do this again.
This was such a cool experience! Getting to see the battleships that close and learning the history behind some of them, definitely recommend as a to-do!!
My family love the Naval Base Tour. The Narrator is very informative. I cant help but can only imagine what our servicemen and women have to go through during their deployment. It broke my heart to know that our servicemen and women put their life on the line to protect us and they get no respect from the citizens of this country. Thank you for protecting our country.
Great family 2 hour trip. nice little boat. AC and small bar and clean restaurants inside. Top deck great views. Crew was professional and guide gave an excellent informative review during the excursion. Recommend it
This tour was one of the highlights of our vacation. Make sure to park in the parking garage and get there a little early because we nearly missed the boat. But we saw dolphins swimming right alongside the boat the tour was great!
Reasonable ticket price for a very informative two-hour tour of the Elizabeth River and Hampton Roads Harbor. Ive lived in the region for twenty years, and I still learned quite a bit about the area. I would go again with friends or out-of-town guests.I recommend this tour to anyone who has any interest in the military and private commerce that lines our local waterways, but the ride itself was also fun and relaxing.
Overall this was a great experience. I went on the 11am cruise on 8/28/20. There was one big caveat however. The person who was narrating wasnt energetic at all. He was very boring to listen too and spoke so fast I could barely understand him. I could also never figure out which ship he was talking about.
We rally enjoyed the tour the ship was clean and the members were really friendly and respectful! I highly recommend it
Took my parents, and everyone enjoyed it! Really informative and well worth the money!
If you like boats, ships and submarines, this tour is for you. Some tips for this. Get there early. Seats are first come first served. If it is just a little cold out, you want to get a seat inside. Also, sit on the right side, most items on the tour are on the right. Lastly, sit near a speaker so you can hear the details.
We bought a bundle ticket for the cruise and to tour the Wisconsin as well. Although they werent able to offer the full tour of the Wiaconsin our self guided tour was pretty awesome! The massiveness and history of this thing was something! We got on the actual tour boat at 530 and throughly enjoyed seeing the other naval ships carriers and submarines. There were also the large cargo ships and some very large cruise ships on our way back in at port. A few dolphins made a surprise visit as well. I would highly recommend doing the tour of the Wisconsin. Even if your not into the history side of things-but should be for this in my opinion, seeing a real battleship up close and personal is humbling and inspiring. Much thanks to the volunteers, workers and most of all the servicemen who have manned, maintained and served our country on these great ships for our freedom!
This was a very informative and relaxing river cruise. The weather was beautiful during the tour.
Cancelled the day before our cruise and gave no reason for the cancelation. The weather forecast looks as though it will be as beautiful as it has been all week.Edit: was able to reschedule our day to be able to participate in an earlier cruise. Will redo this when completed.
Wonderful cruise along the Elizabeth River. Captain and crew were very informative. I felt very safe during the cruise. Handrails etc sanitized and social-distancing was observed.
Great tour. Lots of history and information. Amazing line up of ships too
The best tour for Norfolk Naval Base. Bring a nice camera and a long focus lens!
Amazing trip .Even saw dolphins.
Great experience, we really had a good time on board. Very nice crew, and we saw dolphins on the way back, feel very lucky
The tour and guides were great! Plus Mike made a killer bloody mary!
Its was a great cruise the staff and Capitan were very knowledgeable, will worth the money. Thank you
Super fun tour, captain was very knowledgeable and crew were friendly, if you like history or military hardware I would highly recommend.
First rate interesting navy knowledge and pleasant tour. I’ve done this tour with various family and friends over the years; never a disappointment. The naval and maritime narration is interesting and accurate, and the pleasant scenery is great. We took advantage of the combo Wisconsin battleship and Nauticus Museum tour ticket package.
It was nice to see the Navy ships from the water. A little slow
We went on the tour back in late December. Set aside at least four hours if you are also doing the Wisconsin and museum. I did a Med Cruise on the Coral Sea in 87-88 and still am in awe when seeing aircraft carriers, let alone four of them in a row. This tour is informative, enjoyable and well worth the money. We will be back the next time we visit Virginia.
Great cruise of information and history of our naval ship’s Captain great person and well narrated with lots of info had a great time would highly recommend
The tour was a learning experience. The host was knowledgeable on all of the buildings, sites, docks, and Naval vessels in/on the Elizabeth River from Waterside to the HRBT entrance to the bay. I would do this again.
Awesome boat tour! Our captain was a retired naval captain, so it was interesting to hear all the details and info he gave on all the different ships, etc. I would definitely recommend doing this cruise/tour. Parking was kind of a pain. We parked in the parking garage attached to a huge office building across the street, instead of the lot down the street that was recommended.
Very nice cruise. Narration seems very knowledgeable. Plenty of indoor climate controlled seats but imo to really get the feel, go up top or on the bow or stern, outside. A variety of small snacks and drinks are available for a moderate price. There is a bathroom on board. What ships you see is dependant on deployment. Must have got lucky cause we saw a ton of different ships. 4 carriers, 3 subs, frigates, destroyers, etc. In addition youll see cargo ships, coast guard and noaa research ships. Note that youll be several hundred yards or more away from the majority of these ships for obvious reasons.
A really well navigated boat tour today despite overcast cold weather. Well worth price admission. Tours at 11am 2pm and 530pm during summer time.
Very informative tour that lasted roughly two hours.
Took the tour (on July 5) with our 3 children (14, 12, 10). We didnt purchase tickets online before and arrived only 10 minutes prior. They were nice and able to accomodate us. Its the closest you will get to see working Navy Ships. Felt honored to be able to see them this close. Narrator gave details on all of the ships. I cant comment if info was correct or not. It was a good experience. I would take the tour again and recommend friends to take the tour.
Great cruise, worth the cost, good value!
This is the visit of choice whenever we have out of town guests not familiar with the area. Seeing where five great rivers converge is very impressive. Even more impressive is the narrator who identifies all the ships in harbor and presents all the history along the shore. We take a Paneras sandwich and listen on the way out and buy a drink downstairs and eat on the way back. Always enjoy.
Best ever this is a must see tour upper deck is Amazing.
Had a great time. Well worth the money
Great trip, great narration and lots of photo opportunities.
A wonderful experience! I recommend the 11am tour with the combo ticket, because its worth an all day trip with the museum and battleship. My kids loved it (ages 3 and 7). Bring binoculars and light weight jacket if you can, it does get very windy on top. Sit in the right side for the best views.
Great ride and enjoyed the history of the naval ships
Excelent tour..even saw dolphins
Comfortable ride. Lots of interesting information given about the activities going on up and down the river. It was very cool too see all of the active duty Navy ships that were docked for various reasons. I never imagined I would ever get to be so close to see those incredible military machines that protect our country and keep the peace all over the world. Well worth the time and money.
Love the tour. Check out the photos of the battleships
The BEST tour you can take of the Norfolk Navy Base. We thought it seemed expensive at first, but NO, it is well worth it. The skipper narrates the whole trip and talks about every ship & facility along the route. The entire staff is friendly & helpful. Nice boat & very smooth, refreshments, enclosed and open space. You will NOT be disappointed with this fun tour!
We bought a combo ticket that also allowed us to visit the Nauticus Museum. Its not cheap, but was well worth it and kept us entertained for most of the day. The boat tour itself takes about two hours. The narrator seemed very well informed and we got a good view of some of the ships. Is there a better way to see ships in a naval port than from a boat?
Great narration and very enjoyable.
The staff was very friendly. When it was too hot to be on top of the boat the lower deck had air conditioning that felt amazing. The commentary was interesting of all the naval ships and cargo that was seen along the way. The time and money was well worth it.
For newbies: there is just one ride per day that leaves at 2 PM and returned around 4 PM.Great experience that allows to see the power that Uncle Sam (US Navy) has.The concessions are affordable: A Snickers orTwix etc bar is $1.25. Also Utz chips were available.Restroom was clean on the ship.Great storytelling during the ride !I enjoyed the experience. We sailed Wednesday Dec 4 2019..
Complete disregard for all the passengers on the port side of the ship. All the sites are viewed off the starboard side and when they turn around, they roll on the throttle and go out into the middle of the channel. When I brought it to the Capt attn, as if he didnt know, he pointed to a railing on the other side of the ship. The one with no standing painted on it I asked?
Weve taken this cruise three times during the past ten years and we never tire of it. Very informative and interesting. If weather permits, sit on the upper deck for a better view and less engine noise. Lots of restaurants nearby for after the trip.
Very interesting and enjoyable.
The tour was awesome. We learnt so much about the history of the area and the trip around the naval base was amazing. I would recommend this trip to anyone who would like to enjoy an afternoon boat ride and spend 2 relaxing hours on a boat. For the most part the ride was a steady ride, except on rare occasions when the boat did rock a bit, so if you suffer from motion sickness you should evaluate your ability to handle the ride.
Our family loved this tour, my boys are 12,8, and 6 and they were thrilled with our choice to go on this ride. My wife and I learned so much it makes me want to go back and visit Norfolk and spend time in the Portsmouth area exploring the history. Crew was awesome and very helpful. Five stars.
So nice and professional I loved it
I understand there are great reviews for this cruise; however, our experience was vastly different and hopefully unique. After driving 5 hours through the night, we received a voicemail from Tom just as we arrived (the day before the cruise) to tell us it was cancelled due to the Coast Guard needing the vessel for a training exercise. (It seems very odd that the Coast Guard would inconvenience a business with an unexpected training event). It was too late to cancel our hotel reservations without fees. No apologies and no attempts to squeeze us in at a different time or an adjacent day. We lost quite a bit of money, not to mention lost vacation time and a ruined birthday celebration.UPDATE: Appreciate the owners response and received the vouchers,. This is indicative of great follow-up customer service and Ive changed my rating to reflect how graciously the owner handled the matter. Im still not a fan of the Coast Guard, however! :) Thanks Tom. Well most likely change this to 5 stars once we actually take the tour!
Truly the best way to see the Naval facility. Awesome crew. One of my biggest highlights of my 6 plus week roadtrip thus far.
If youre at all interested in seeing our Navys finest ships, this cruise is a must! Besides seeing whatever ships are in port, theres a bit of history and information about waterside Norfolk and Portsmouth as well. The cruise is extremely well narrated.
Definitely need to take this cruise when in Norfolk! Great staff and smooth ride. Learned a bunch about the area and ships. So much fun!
This is an awesome river tour. The captain is the guide and he is very knowledgeable and gives a lot of great information. The ships are absolutely fascinating and there are many great places to take pictures. The boat ride isnt too rough either.
Went on the 2pm tour and had a blast. Took a 4 and 2 year old and the 4 year old loved it, 2yo crashed in 5 minutes and slept through most. We sat on the edges on the top and it was awesome to be able to see all the ships and learn about the area. I highly recommend sitting in the very front of the boat if possible, my son and i sat up there for an extended time period and no one else was there which was awesome. You get to see all of the ships on the coast and navy yard, plus we saw a pod of dolphins. I highly recommend the Nauticus and Wisconsin tours as well, they were fantastic to walk through, but there isnt enough time to get through all of it in a day. The battleship is huge and could probably spend an entire day on just the battle ship.
Love taking guests on this tour.
Great informational tour of the largest Naval base in the world. Tour takes you passed all Navy ships that are in as well the overall Norfolk Port. Youll see container ships, private boats, tug boats and various other marine activities. The tour boat is nice but it was a little warm at times, we were inside due to rain.
Great staff, comfortable ship and very well informed captain! Its the only way you can see the whole harbor, all battleships and surroundings. Just be aware that you need sunscreen and also a light jacket, the sun is strong and wind is blowing!
Really enjoyed this 2 hour trip. The boat was nice with indoor and outdoor seating. It is a round trip and they narrate the first half and then you just sight see on the way back. The staff seemed very knowledgeable and pointed out some neat things and facts along the way. We had 4 children ages 10,9,2, and 1 they all seemed to enjoy this. The only downfall we had was we didnt know there wasnt parking on sight. You have to pay and park in a parking garage 1 or 2 blocks away. This isnt a big deal just would have been nice to know when I called and reserved our tickets.
Really nice, informative learning experience. The Norfolk harbor is beautiful and, while this tour highlights the naval angle in its description, they also cover many, many other landmarks at and around the harbor with its history. The person who narrates the tour did a great job especially considering how how there is to talk about and the boat only turns twice and slows once or twice in a two-hour cruise. Our cruise was mostly adults but there were a half-dozen children between the ages of 6 and 12 who seemed to enjoy it - shaking the hand of the captain as they disembarked. From a patriotic perspective, seeing the magnificent feats of marine engineering is both motivational and educational. The narrator emphasized the technology and not the killing power of the weapons systems and struck a balance between the role of our war machines that serve both as defensive weapon as well as an offensive deterrent and weapon.
Wonderful tour...repeat customer.
Excellent! Comfortable, smooth, informative ride. The best civilian way to see the Naval hospitals and the ships.
Fantastic tourUnique opportunity to get fairly close to some amazing u.s. Navy ships.
The boat was clean, crew was friendly. But the two hour tour was kind of not so exciting. We saw maybe 6 warships?? But we did see USS Henry Truman aircraft carrier from very far.
It was a one of a kind experience. The tour guide was very knowledgable. There were plenty of ships to see at the port, both military and civillian. The price was right on point for the kind tour it was. The crew were very nice and offered help when needed.
This is an amazing tour, we saw 4 aircraft carriers, numerous other naval vessels. When we were returning, there was a Frigit coming in with all the sailors 9n the deck, and also a sub returning. Well worth the cost.
Great tour! Very informative and knowledgeable! Would recommend to anyone!
Need to have some good music its a great cruise for 2 hours but they should have some rmb soca or calypso music spice up the cruise its boring after you had a drink. Thats my opinion people on the cruise said music is important
Great commentary mixed with the boat ride. Well worth the money
Awesome and informative tour. Captain and crew were very polite and professional. A must do tour.
Wonderful time, and the crew was extremely knowledgeable. Saw Nimitz Class Aircraft Carriers, Arleigh Burke Class Destroyers, Ticonderoga Class Cruisers, Los Angeles and Virginia Class Submarines. Plus the Navy Police came to watch us.
For non English speakers, the guide speaks a bit too fast, but its very interesting
Very informative. Everything ran on time. The ticket window was a little out of the way but the cashier was very helpful.Definitely recommend if you are in the area.Good choice of snacks on board. Was surprised that it is licensed. The prices of the souvenirs is very reasonable.
Very enjoyable and informative cruise! My kids age 6 and 12 years old thoroughly enjoyed is as well!
Really enjoyed this and very informative. As we were moving the narration focused on things in front of the boat that we couldnt see from inside...would be better if narrator waited until those things were beside us. Would definitely recommend this however. Seeing 4 super aircraft carriers side by side was amazing!
Fun an educational boat ride was excellent you can either set up up up on deck out of the wind or they had a cabin with the AC it was overall a nice experience really enjoyed it
This was a very nice cruise around the harbor. The captain/narrator had plenty of information about each ship we saw. My husband, whose more into these sort of things than I am, was super excited and impressed with the boat tour.
Good value! It was a nice relaxing 2 hour boat ride. You will see both the Navy docks and import/export docs in a way you never have! The captain was very informative and explained what you were looking at.
Highly recommend this cruise. Very interesting and informative! We enjoyed it very much!
Great and informative tour followed by frequent, annoying email spam! Great tour! What an amazing experience to see and hear about our Navy ships. Our captain was vey informative, we were amazed by how much information he new. It was a bit cool outside so we stayed inside for about half of the tour, it is definitely nicer if you can be on top of the boat to see better. We loved it.
Extremely well-done narration.
Great tour - knowledgeable narration, it was a quick 2 hours!
I found the crew to be very friendly a very pleasant Cruise
Great harbor tour!! Captain really knows his stuff and did a fantastic job of pointing things out. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Would highly recommend!
One of the main reasons we visited Norfolk was to tour the Naval Base. We took the river cruise on the Victory Rover, as well, a bus tour of the base and while we enjoyed and recommend both tours if you only have time for one, take the river cruise. The bus tour provided a different perspective and you also saw the base which interesting, but you get a much better view of the ships from the river. We found the narrative provided by The Victory Rover’s captain was well presented and very informative, he provided much more information about the various ships the the guide on the bus tour. Given the number of ships in port at the time, his vast knowledge was very impressive.
