Definitely worth the hour and a half drive. The traffic on the way there, not a big fan. But the museum and what it encloses was well worth it.
We absolutely loved all the fabulous displays they had. My son loved the military display, but had to correct them on one item they had saying it wasnt used in Vietnam but that it was much newer and should be marked Operation Iraqi Freedom era is the year 2000 or better. I just smiled. He is so good about anything military no matter what it is..always has been and hes just 18.The video I took was of their amazing button collection and it was for my neighbor that also collects button. But it wont let me post that. Just a few small item pics I took. I wish I had taken more photos of the displays, but definitely worth the visit!
Friendly staff, some great exhibits and great price.
This place has some amazing facts...check it out
Pretty interesting place its a lot bigger than I expected. I went for a class assignment and end up really enjoying myself. There was was a lot of interesting things to look at and learn about. A few things I would change but overall a great experience.
We enjoyed our visit very much! Especially the exhibit of Dorothy Cover. She was a relative and I remember her when I was a little girl but I had no idea what a wonderful artist she was! I would like more information on some of the displays in the other parts of the museum.
Friendly staff, some great exhibits and great price.
Very interesting window into the history of the city of Modesto. They have lots of antiques and artifacts dating back to the early 1900s. Admission is free, though donations are appreciated.
The McHenry museum is a wonderful building (the original library of Modesto). It is very well preserved and maintained. But the real focus is the very interesting objects within. There is a school, a blacksmiths shop, a kitchen and other wonderful displays. The doll display is truly outstanding and has been cared for by loving hands. A delightful store serves as the gift shop with ;many desirable items for adults and children alike.
It’s a dinky little museum, but I gave it the full five stars because I really got a good sense of what life was like way back when in the area. Be sure to ask the docents all your questions, because they are very knowledgeable, and they have reference materials for the questions they don’t know the answer to. Spend a couple hours here, then call grandma and reminisce.

McHenry Museum was fun. Great way to spend the day with kids. Free admission! Museum attendants were very friendly and knowledgeable. Front desk informed us of other upcoming events at the museum that we are welcome to join.
I visited this museum one evening recently as the agency where I work was hosting a holiday party here. I had not thought about visiting this museum before because I assumed it was nothing special and no one I knew had ever talked about it. I actually felt embarrassed as I toured the exhibits here and realized how wrong I had been and had really missed out on a very nice museum. For starters, the building is simply beautiful and larger inside than I had expected. There is a lot to see here and it would take approx. an hour and a half to view all the exhibits. Lots of history of the area here and memorabilia that covers most aspects of life in the Central Valley. There were some full size exhibits of a barbershop, school, soda shop, general store, to name a few that were well done. Lots of great photographs, household items, sports memorabilia, doll and toy collection, Native American section, gold mining, farm implements, law enforcement items, to name some of the things you will see here. The museum has two floors, with the basement housing many of the exhibits. There is something to intrigue just about everyone here and admission is free. There is a nice gift shop as well with souvenir items and a good collection of books. Dont miss this interesting and worthwhile museum!
This is a great place! My adult son and I spent some time here looking around and reading all the info. Most informative and very interesting! Bring your family and enjoy a wonderful time down memory lane.

It was an awesome visit! The museum volunteers were VERY nice and loved how when we went downstairs, the lovely volunteer interacted with us and was so welcoming! My son had a great time learning new things. Thank you so much for the great experience
Its a nice little museum to go to and see the history of the town. The next few weeks they will have the Mo Band exhibit that is celebrating its 100 years of playing here in Modesto.
The Museum was the public library building of my youth. When in the early 80s the new county library was built, the people of Modesto and Stanislaus County had the vision to save the building and transition it into a museum. This is a great look into the past from the indigenous native American tribes, wheat fields, fruit and nut growing made possible with the formation of an extensive irrigation district to canning industry and Gallo Winery. 2 Railroads service the area transporting goods to the world.
Love going there the people are so nice.
Really cool place. They ask for a $ donation

The McHenry Museum is a neat place to learn about the history of Modesto and how it came to be what we know of it today. Its pretty cool!
I had a great time during the haunted museum halloween event on the 27th, especially with my furry family helping entertain the children outside who were waiting to go in.Even during normal hours its great to go and see the history from around this area, im not sure if its just from Modesto, all over California, or even bordering states, go find out.
