Elmwood is, indeed, a beautiful, peaceful and serene place to stroll through and get away - even for a while - from the world that surrounds it. As a photographer, I especially enjoy walking through and photographing the statuary which is the type of art that we shall not likely ever see made again. The reason for my four stars is because I do have a physical handicap which prevents me from walking long distances at a time. Therefore, I have to drive my car down the streets, find some place I can stop, exit the car and then walk the cemetery in parts. I should like very much to take the guided tour, but that is impossible for me due to my inability to walk such a long distance. It would be a wonderful idea for there to be small golf carts for those handicapped persons to ride the tour, or at least one of the new Bird Bikes. That way, those small vehicles would be easy to park on the side of the street without blocking the street or running over into the grassy areas.. It just is not well handicap equipped for those who are not able to walk well or far. With there being so little space on the streets to park, I think it would be a grand idea to rent the small vehicles such as a Bird Bike or golf cart. The money from those rentals could be another source of funding for the cemetery. So - it would be a win-win for everyone. Other than the access for the handicapped, I would give it a 5 star.

This is a very historical site with so much of Memphis history. The gravestones are extricate and beautiful. There is a confederate soldier section, an odd fellow section and a free mason section. There is an audio tour you can download and really get some historical facts and interesting tidbits. I recommend this highly

Elmwood is a very beautiful place, dont get me wrong. My Mother loved it so mush as a child and asked to be laid to rest there. So imagine my heartbreak when they intentionally defaced and damaged my Mothers headstone and others on mothers day of 2017. (Click on photos to see what I found on Mothers day! The mud cover headstone is face up! Thats not the bottom. Its not upside down) The hurt they caused me on Mothers day wont ever go away. Now I know some of you love the horror Movies they show and Haunted tours they give. But You have people buried there that would not like you turning their final resting place into a sideshow. My mother is one of them. I know thats how you raise money but In the State of TN its felony to do any of the things you are doing there. Please look at what I have starred in Tennessee code 46-2-105. Crimes and offenses(a) *No person shall willfully destroy, ***deface, or ***injure any monument, *tomb,***gravestone, or other structure placed in the cemetery, or any roadway, walk, fence orenclosure in or around the same, or injure any tree, plant or shrub therein, or hunt orshoot therein, *play at any game or ***amusement therein, or loiter for lascivious or lewdpurposes therein, or interfere, by words or actions, with any funeral procession or anyreligious exercises.(b) A violation of this section is a *****Class E felony*****.Now as for the staff they called it a accident, a simple mistake. They told me they werent liable for accidents in the everyday operation of their business. They said we cleaned it and put it back and thats all they could. With a no feeling sorry. Yes they put it back but I cleaned it not them. I filmed myself cleaning on Mothers day! Once the news showed up they tried offering me a new headstone. I told them nothing will fix the hurt and her headstone is the one I gave her. They blocked me form their Facebook when I wrote a review. So now try taking this one down. I am asking the IRS and the State of TN to see where the money is going from the movies and Tours.

Great driving tour- the audio guided tour is available to download for $10 online so the visitor’s cottage does not need to be open to buy the tour.So much interesting information- stories about the people buried here and how they played a part in Memphiss history. It’s about an hour and 20 minute audio, but you’ll want to stop a few times to get out and see markers up close. We spent a little under two hours here.If you like history and quirky information about the city then you’ll like this tour.

I paid for the audio tour but actually turned it off very quickly because it was more pointing out the famous graves and for us this is not what we really care about that much. If you do like your local history then the audio tour would be excellent. We ended up just using the map to guide us around, but taking the opportunity to get out and read some of the graves, feel the emotion and also experience the nature as this place is great for bird watching (it is recognised as such)Make sure you have plenty of time here - the gates shut at 5 so give yourself a good 2hrs or more as it really is massive and very very interesting. We are really glad we visited on our trip to the Deep South

A very historically important cemetery as it contains the final resting places of some of Memphis’ most notorious members of society as well as some who were innocent victims of their time. Definitely worth a visit for anyone interested in Memphis history. Make sure you pay the $10 and take advantage of the guided audio tour (CD) with your vehicle. Walking the cemetery may be difficult for some folks.

Even at the end of March, this cemetery is beautiful, I can only imagine what its like in the middle of spring or the hot steamy summer. There was a wedding going on in the Chapel, what a great idea!Weve visited old, historical cemeteries all over the US and the Elmwood is incredible.Restrooms near the office, when its open. If the Masoleum is open, ignore the creepy feelings and go inside. Its clean, quiet (of course) and the interred range in burial dates. The biggest surprise is the altar/shrine to #Elvis. Amazing! Remember to close the doors behind you.

We made a stop thru on a road trip this past Oct. all the way from NE Ohio. As a photographer, i had to stop. Indeed, its beautiful and historical and the landscape is well maintained- would have given 5 stars. However, upon entering the office to seek general info due to the size of the cemetery, we were met not with a greeting but a cost. $ for maps $ for a self guided audio tour. And when we showed no intrest in spending money on things that should be offered freely, both employees stopped talking to us immediately. Wheres that southern hospitality?! We have personally visited and recorded 158 cemeteries from Ohio to Kansas to Missippi, Kentucky ect, picking up full colored, informative literature (for free!!!)along the way-this is the ONLY cemetery that insistes on banking off the dead. Good job, friends. Thumbs down.

My mother is buried under a beautiful tree there, away from traffic and next to an old family friend. My only complaint is that its closed on sundays. Night time is understandable,, but there shouldnt be restrictions on when you can take flowers or visit a loved one in during the day. I wasnt able to visit my mothers gravesight on Mothers Day this year, for instance. Outside of that one thing, I couldnt be more thankful that she was able to be buried in such a beautiful and historic spot.
