Very informative about the Flint Hills. Be sure and watch the 15 minute film. Wind blows on your face and foam snow falls. Sit in the 1st 2 chairs on the left side and you will get covered in snow.2nd floor is devoted entirely to kids activities. Very nice staff. Discount for Veterans.
This was a fantastic experience for the entire family. The scavenger hunt for my 4 year old helped to keep her focused and interested on the main level exhibit. We watched the Flint Hills film. It was educational and we enjoyed the 4D effects. Upstairs, there are many play areas for little ones to enjoy. The limitless options for hands-on fun for the kids is well worth the visit. All of the staff was friendly and willing to answer any questions we had. My only complaint was the single-ply toilet paper in the restrooms. We did appreciate the foot stools for the kids though.
Ive been here just to visit and Ive been here for a wedding as well, its a great place. For a smaller town, Manhattans choice to put in a Discovery center was a great one. The best thing about the Discovery center is that they are constantly changing what is being displayed, so every time that you come you learn something new!
Loved it. A detailed and entertaining look at the history of the Flint Hills.
Absolutely amazing! The kids area in the second floor was so perfect for our 2.5 year old :D The main exhibits were very educational and relatable since they were all about local science and history. The gardens on the rooftop were icing on the cake :)
My friend had a wedding reception here after Christmas! The decor was still up and looked great! This is a truly stunning venue.
Have been here for a family outing, and also for a field trip. Staff are all amazing. Interactive exhibits keep kids entertained while teaching about the local history. Gift shop is nice and reasonably priced, restrooms are clean, and elevator is accessible if stairs are not suitable. Definitely recommend a visit here!
Kansas history at its finest!
Very nice and informative
This place is amazing. I learned more about the prairie here than in my physical geography course at Bluemont College.
Since I am not originally from the Kansas area, this place was great as an introduction into the history and geography of the area. The film is totally worth watching and really brings the Flint Hills to life. Upstairs is the kids area and they change the exhibits out regularly covering science to art to seasonal changes and themes. The time and effort the staff put into this place is phenomenal. Its very clean, very well kept and always changing. One of my favorite places to take the kids on a cold winter day. :)
Great for the whole family (we took 3 generations). The main floor is a more typical museum, but very interactive. The upper floor is a kids zone with everything from magna tiles to a tunnel slide. There is a 4D movie included in your general admission (seats dont move, but there are other sensory elements). I learned new things about the prairie even after having lived here my whole life.
This is certainly worth the drive out of the way to visit. While it certainly has more than enough to entertain the kids, anyone will enjoy and learn a lot from coming here. If youre planning on visiting the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, make sure this is on your itinerary as well.
52 dollars later I took the kids to build paper air planes and play on the one slide with a couple of things surrounding it. Not worth the money. May have been just a bad day, but will not return.
Awesome little museum!! It was definitely worth visiting! Very informative while still being exciting enough to hold a younger ones attention. The children’s play area is great! Price was very reasonable.
Not kid friendly. They have dress up areas and interactive areas, but we had staff following us sanitizing and straightening everything my child touched (in the play area). It was bad enough that our two year old started picking up toys and handing them to the staff following him. The staff complained about how messy kids are and demanded to know where two of the ‘missing’ buckets were- like we were to blame. It’s possible that this was just clean up time for their building, but the staff that were following us to clean were abrasive and made wife and my son uncomfortable enough that we left after only about 30 minutes.
Was a neat place to go with just two adults!
I visited here for an afternoon out with my younger sister. I thought that the building was very beautiful. The architecture is very modern and different. I felt that the price was a bit steep for what the Discovery Center entailed. I paid $9 for a student ticket and I believe the adult ticket was even more than that. There is only one main floor that has things to look at. They have it all packed in there pretty well. The part I enjoyed the most was the video showed in their theater about the Flint Hills. It was very beautifully done and the special effects may be worth the $9 admission fee. The upstairs has a playroom area for kids that my sister was too old to find fun. I would say it was better suited for younger children. The overlook/patio area is wonderful. It provides great views of the city of Manhattan.
We were very disappointed today while attending PreK event. You pay for the event but you are not allowed to go in and see the exhibits inside which sounds ridiculous! Very disappointing!
We had my daughters 6th birthday party here. The room was perfect for the party. Plenty of tables and chairs. The kids all had a blast after going through the exhibits and one of the attendants even fast forwarded the movie timer so we would not have to wait. Overall great experience!
Very interesting and educational. Dont miss the 15 minute welcoming video! Well worth the small price of admission. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Allow about 1-11/2 hours to take in all of the exhibits.
We visited the center expecting the typical kids education center experience. What suprised us most was the condition of the displays. Nearly every one of them was in good condition with only one needing some repair. We also enjoyed the amount of information and the way it was presented. They have plenty of facts designed to stand out to the children while still providing much more information for the adults to read as they walk through. At the time we visited, they had a travelling exhibit called Rainforest Adventure. The kids in the exhibit were definitely on their best behavior but in spite of that, it was still in good condition and very informative. Having the information in the form of a maze was very interesting. Outside of the information and the exhibits, the staff was very helpful without coming across as overbearing or stuffy. It appears that the facility was either recently built or recently remodeled. In either case, it was very clean and comfortable to visit. If we happen to be in the area we will keep this in mind as a good place to spend some time and gather additional information on the Flint Hills.
The one star review is for the film they encouraged us to watch with our children (4, 2 &1), Robbinson Crusoe. It was fantastic, until it wasnt, and my husband and I were is total shock that this was acceptable entertainment for any child. Common sense has completely left whoever approved the viewing of this film, it is embarrassing that something like this would have gotten by anyone who is involved with a center geared towards children!!!!! In the movie the parrot and other animals get ahold of a musket (GUN!!) And try to figure out how to use it like a human would... this entailed them putting their faces against the barrel of the gun to try and look down to see why it wasnt working, while instructing the other animals to pull the trigger to get it to work!!!! Who thought of this???? My husband is a Marine, we are for the right of gun ownership, but SAFE GUN USE should be taught at ALL TIMES. Even when our kids play with their play popguns we tell them not to aim it at themselves or others. Even a nerf gun could cause a serious eye injury if pointed and shot in the eye. For the chance that someone may be watching a child and not think of putting away their guns (if you watch the news this has horriffically and unfortunately happened), why risk it, why risk a child copying the only things they may have seen about guns?? The film was very well made and fun, and if not for teaching children something so WRONG, could have been great.Everything else was excellent, my children LOVED it, was CLEAN, staff was EXCELLENT and the set up and displays were well maintained and interesting, we stayed over two hours and loved it (until the film).
Pricey but super fun for kids of all ages. We spent about 2 hours there because the play area is so awesome
Great place and worth the admission. The movie at the beginning is just a wonderful experience. A great overview of the Flint Hills. The museum is set up well and very nice displays and photos.
Excellent place to bring kids to play and learn local history
Nice center with a good history of the area
Went on a field trip with my sons class (3-5 yr old). Great for a mixed group of ages, enough entertainment for younger children and education for older children. Kept them entertained for 2+ hours, nice place!
Wonderful place to take children. My daughter and I had the most wonderful time when we went! The view at the top of the building is truly spectacular and a must see. We will definitely return (so far we have been twice.)
Love it! Great for kids. Educational. Our kids love the splash park. Fun toddler area and 4-D theater. Model train set.
The video on the first floor was excellent, it gave a great background on the history of the surrounding area. They had two traveling exhibits upstairs that were lacking in interest and felt like they were missing something. It is worth going to just to see the video and the first floor permanent exhibit.
The Flint Hills Discovery Center was a totally awesome place to visit! I loved the interactive movie experience and the exibits were informative and cool. Especially enjoyed the exibit on the Big Red 1 they had. It was so neat to see how the unit had evolved over the years.
A great spot to entertain the kids for a couple hours. Not a huge space, but plenty to do, play, see and learn.
A great outing for your children to learn and play. Downstairs is mostly for children who can read & theres a small theater for a 15 min showing, but upstairs theres a huge play area, engaging/ educational displays, and interactive things to do that will keep kids busy for a while.
Great place for children! Lots of interactive exhibits. The tickets are a bit pricey, and Im glad we went once but Im not sure it would be worth going back. That being said, the exhibits are very well put together, and the video is a must-see!
-Be the Dinosaur exhibit was disappointing. Aside from Penny Cullers nice wall murals, this exhibit is mainly a handful of informational kiosk related to the game and 6 video game/simulators. (One was not working). The 10 yr old I brought went thru the 2 game options quickly several times and was ready to leave. He commented there were no omnivores, only TRex and triceratops. Certainly not worth the price of adult ticket ($9) if this is all you came to see.-Childrens interactive area is for younger children and mostly the same as when it opened. .-Movie appears to be the same all of the time.-Rest of the Discovery Center, while nicely done, isnt worth the adult price to see more than once.
My boys enjoyed the dinosaur exhibit. The exhibit was a bit small, but very neat and interactive. The childrens area has several activities they enjoyed.
It was a first-time visit for two in our group and the seventh for the other five, yet all enjoyed the exploring, learning and discovery here. Norm was a great guide to the wonders of the center.
Absolutely amazing!
Its great place share with your children about the great plains of Kansas and of course the Flint hills! There are many interactive things to do there for kids a big kids too!
There were some cool wolves there but my little sister freaked out
All I can say is, wow! I just had my wedding at the Flint Hills Discovery Center and I can attest to it being an ideal new venue. The building is gorgeous, the exhibits were fun for the children and it provides a great landscape for photos. I cant say enough great things about Jonathan and Susan at the Discovery Center. It was like having an extra set of event coordinators. Jonathan was cleaning up trash and running around day-of without even being asked to help. Do keep in mind that its a City-owned building, and that the limitations of that are not for everyone. Ask a lot of questions, though, they have a fix for everything.
This place is so great if you can you need top come here
Good place for both older and younger kids. The 4D theater was a big hit, as was the play space on the second floor.
Great for family. So surprised with the amount of activities. Shouldve came earlier.
Nice flint hills and Manhattan museum. Quick intro for new people and visitors in the area
Great local museum! Informative and engaging exhibits in a beautiful space.
Beautiful building inside and out, the exhibits were geared more to kids, but i still enjoyed it
I loved it because it was such a fun learning experience for me
Fun kids area upstairs and a great exhibit related to the Flint Hills.
Fun for the whole family. Very educational.
It could be a little bigger. But still amazing!
This is an awesome place to take your kids and families to learn about the Flint Hills.
Its ok. We went because it was for free the day we went. Its over priced. Only went there once and did not go again.
Great Discovery center
Adults and kids had fun!
Pleasant local attraction.
Really interesting
Three bus loads of elementary students visiting today.
It provides great views of the city of Manhattan
OverpricedUglyPlasticNoisyThe only part my students and I enjoyedwas a photo display of prairie that will only be therefor 2 months.
