Treasure of Madison. My record is seeing 23 turkeys in one day at the arb. You are almost guaranteed to see beautiful trees and wildlife. On my last visit, my kids and I saw an owl, three sand hill cranes, and 17 turkeys, plus lots of squirrels. Beautiful coniferous garden with specimens from around the globe. If you get off the main road, you can be alone and really enjoy the trees. The main road is usually VERY busy with bike and foot traffic. The owl picture is in an American beech near the main building. If you are interested in tree identification, this place is a must.Just today I saw my first paw-paw. And got to see fruits and the suckering common to this species.

A true Madison gem. Im surprised I took so long to hike the actual paths. I have run through here several times. Hiking the paths through the lost city makes me feel like Im somewhere slightly remote, not in the middle of the city.

You could spend several hours just taking pictures and admiring of all the vibrant plants you see here. The gardens were fantastic. The trails were okay and well Im not sure about the pond thou lol

The University of Wisconsin - Madison Arboretum is wonderful for running. This the fall colors, the sounds of the birds and the fabulous scenery you cant go wrong. The road this not traveled by many so you will not run across much traffic....mostly other walkers and runners. And if you have the energy you can follow the loop through Nakoma and the Zoo near St. Marys Hospital....allowing you approximately 6 miles of flat and rolling hill stretches. Enjoy!

A city treasure, the Arboretum is Madisons version of Central Park. Unlike Central Park, the Arb is located southwest of downtown but still within easy reach by bike. The grounds include representative samples of all Wisconsins natural ecosystems, with evergreen and hardwoord forests, tallgrass prairies, oak savannas and various wetlands. In addition, the formal arboretum includes tree and shrub specimens from around the world. There is something for everyone here; cyclists, hikers, strollers and even very sedentary folk will find a way to enjoy nature. Adventuresome folks might enjoy finding the tunnel under the Beltline to reach the super-secret south area of the Arboretum, which hosts another great collection of trails and views.

We just got back from our WONDERFUL guided tour with Roshelle (Shelly) and I cant speak highly enough of her knowledge and expertise as a naturalist. She brought the facts and history of the Arboretum alive with great stories and her passion for nature. Thank you!!!! We are so lucky to have such a natural gem in our city and all the staff and volunteers to support it!!!!

We saw a huge and gorgeous turkey cross the road right in front of us about 10 feet away, it was absolutely beautiful, and this is in mid March! Great for birdwatching, we saw an enormous pileated woodpecker making a tremendous amount of noise pecking at a giant tree, we saw nuthatches and mallards, deer tracks. I imagine this place would be fantastic for animal watching in summertime. The spring that bubbles up from underneath a big tree is worth seeing, as I like all forms of water features, and it interests me to see water come up out of the ground, as if by magic. Lots of people walking, jogging, hiking, and biking even though it was about 45 degrees outside. The Visitor Center is very pleasant, the desk person super informative and helpful. Its worth giving them a few dollars in donation to keep up the trails and such, seeing as how there is no fee to get in.

Heaven in the middle of a city! If you can concentrate on the sounds, smells and beauty of the gardens you might be able to not hear the hum of the Beltline. Go deeper into the trails, you will definitely not hear the Beltline and find heaven in the middle of a city. Spring and Fall are a must for smells and photos. If you need to get away, but cant. Take a trail, for 45 minutes. Honestly, heaven!
