While the team that interfaces with the public within the gym, pool, etc. are incredibly polite and helpful, the front desk could use some work. All of the trainers, the lifeguards, and janitorial staff were amiable during my two months of use, but the front desk staff made the process of cancelling and starting a new membership at another location unnecessarily difficult. When I came in the first day, I spoke with a rep and explained that I’d only be in the area for under two months before moving the Charlottesville to begin medical school and they cheerfully assured me that this was no problem and that I could use their facilities and then change over to another YMCA whenever I moved. Turns out the membership did not transfer and when I called to ask about this and cancel well before the renewal for a third month, they only then explained that cancellations to a membership must be made 30 days in advance and that YMCA memberships don’t transfer seamlessly between locations.Again, couldn’t speak more highly of the gym staff and others, but the front desk and customer service team should put in a little more effort to be transparent to new members.
Get for the kids during the winter. They have to pass a swim test to be allowed to curtain parts of the pool as well as the 2 slides (which I dont have pictures of) Green Band for 2/3 foot deep, buckets and 1 slide. Red Band for anywhere and both slides. They have swim noodles for everyone as well. Me and the hubby like to enjoy the hot tub for a while. They can also play in the gym or workout with you but my kids just love to swim. we go in the family locker room unless its full then well separate into the girls& boys locker rooms.Only bad thing is you smell chlorine for the next couple days.
Great place! Staff is always helpful and friendly
Horribly rude staff, Dirty gym, unsafe lifting platforms, not enough weights for the equipment. A true disaster waiting to happen.
Great facility. I’m an early morning user. ALL of the staff treat you as if you are their best friends! Instructors and coaches are all unique, energetic, and motivating. Why go anywhere else?
Great facility and I love the child care option. Really insatiable staff. They are very friendly and helpful. However, they need to readjust their weekend hours. They are only open until 6pm on Saturday and Sunday and these two days of the week are prime for myself and my family. I am paying a lot of money per month to not be able to go to the gym on the days I have the most availability.
Great facility and equipment, however most days there is no parking. Parking spots are almost always 100% full and people tend to make their own parking. I usually drive by and if there are no spots available, I’m forced to go to the Express Y on old forest road which is hardly ever busy.
Great gym with great facilities. Staff are friendly and helpful. Includes an indoor pool with full locker room and showers as well as a multipurpose gym (basketball, etc.) and instructor-led exercise/fitness studios. Also, the facility has a large fitness area including cardio equipment, weight machines, free weight area, and yoga room. The downside is that because this is the primary facility of its kind in the area, it gets very crowded.
Great staff, upbeat atmosphere, sanctuary of fitness.
I started the martial arts class there about 7 to 8 months ago. I recommend this class to anyone that isnt afraid of hard work. Since I started this has been one of the best things I have done in my life.
Its clean. Its nice. I just wish there was more class options in the evening. A LOT of the classes I want to take are in the middle of the day when most people are at work. I loved doing deep water classes at the YMCA in Roanoke. I was hoping theyd have it here, too. They do, but only when Im stuck at work. Same for Zumba. Its always either middle of day, or last class of the day when Im trying to go to bed.Overall, though, I love this gym. Theyve been nice and one women introduced herself to us while we were on the treadmill. Joy, I think was her name. I dont remember. but she let us know a lot about options for different things that we had no idea about when we signed up. I want to thank her greatly for that.
The Athletic Director or Head of Athletics at this location is wonderful: incredible character and very friendly. The facility is very good quality and (last I checked) their indoor pools have a pretty cool water-slide. They provide sports such as soccer (futbol), flag football, and basketball. All in all a great place.
The only problem is when they have swim meets there is no parking. I drove around for 10 minutes looking for a spot before I gave up and left. It was my only chance to go all week and I cant because theres no where to park. This happens all the time .
I love the Jameson ymca!
Clean facility, great classes (and if you ever take their power yoga classes, you HAVE to go to Marindas class, she is the best!). Weights area could be set up a little better, but there is a very wide variety of equipment available. Great pools, awesome kids pool area/water playground.
A big joke!!!
Rude older man with white hair, no joke, yells at people to leave around closing time-usually they are just kids. The rest of the staff, particularly an older lady with dirty blonde hair and glasses, ignore me when I walk through the door but then come in the locker room and harass me about closing time. At 9:58pm, they are escorting me to the door. It’s ridiculous! It’s annoying because they recognize me and that I go there a lot but still choose to be cold and rude. I don’t need a welcoming party but at least treat me with some respect bc I am never rude to them. I’ve been coming to the y for 20+ years. I know what time you close- leave me alone.
Great swimming
Ive been a member of this YMCA for probably 10 years or more. At one time, it was a nice place to workout, but a lot of the equipment is now outdated and worn. If you want to work out between 5 and 7, you can expect an extremely over crowded gym and horrible parking lot.For the price of membership you do not get much. Yes they have a pool, but it is so over booked and crowded, I dont attempt to use it any longer. My biggest grip is the cost of membership. $75 dollars a month for family. If you do anything extra such as swimming lessons, t-ball etc, you have to pay even more money. Because it is so over crowded, I decided to go to Planet fitness which is only 10 dollars a month and right across from my work. Its not near as crowded. I was then going to reduce our membership at the Y down to a single adult, which I think is also high at $46 a month, after my wife had confirmed with the staff that our young kids would still have access to the kids gym. Apparently, we were mis-informed because when she tried to check the kids in a week later, she was told their membership cards were inactive, because the single membership does not account for young children. My wife likes the exercise classes otherwise, she would be at planet fitness as well. If we wish to have a place for our kids to go for 4 hours a month, we have to pay the full membership price of $75. I spoke directly with the membership director who pretty much stated that is their policy and there was nothing they would do to change it. I received the impression that they could care less if a loyal member for over 10 years canceled their membership or not.Equipment - outdated and crowded.Parking - Over crowded especially between 5 and 7 pm.Classes - goodKids gym - averagePool - over booked and overcrowded.Cost - over pricedMembership for one adult with young children - Way over priced!!! (No consideration of single mothers/fathers).Membership Director - Never helpful and seems to be all about herself and making money.
This YMCA boasts a well appointed exercise facility complete with full swimming and weight lifting amenities all to the accompaniment of a knowledgeable and extremely inviting staff. When I started here I was a complete novice, but I now know my way around a weight room quite well thanks to the friendly and helpful people. I highly recommend this place. Try the Zumba strong and the Pilates! Youll never be the same!
Its a lot like gold gym (which was in Lynchburg) in the since of all the meat heads and chicks showing butt. Id recommend going to the downtown ymca which is more of a relaxed old school feel if your not into a bunch of men banging on their chest and women prissing!
Nice big open rooms, my son loves the Kidz Gym, wonderful staff
Terrible “customer service”. When I asked to cancel our membership an associate talked me into putting it on hold and then I was billed 2 more months. I called and no one was available to fix the issue so I drove 20min to this location and no one was available to fix the issue, but was told that management would call me. No one called me. I cancelled our membership amidst protests that we would certainly be refunded if we spoke to the management. We were not refunded nor were we ever contacted by the management, who is mysteriously never on site or available.Unprofessional, but typical of Lynchburg.AVOID this location.
I love the power yoga class, pilates, zumba, and cycling. The instructors are really knowledgeable and very helpful. You will have fun and stress free after each class.
Dongs. Dongs EVERYWHERE. Dont get me wrong, this Y has a great gym with tons of nice equipment and machines, but the second I walk into the mens room, Im brushing my teeth with some saggy seniors skin missle like its doin 96 on the Autobahn down my esophagus... Also has nice staff.
