Fun place for everyone of all ages. We were concerned that the prairie dogs wouldnt be out at this time of year but they were all over the place. I could have spent hours watching them scampering around to get the baby carrots we took for them.
Great attraction for kids, we stopped here on a trip to Colorado to stop and stretch our legs. But ensure to stop at a store for restrooms before coming here I couldnt find any at this location.
A field of prairie dogs in a city park. Who wouldve ever imagined it! It was a cute surprise. My teens enjoyed watching the animals fight over carrots. They were everywhere. Was educational and interesting. Made us look up information about prairie dogs and why the town even has this park.
So exciting, prairie dogs give you a sense of peace watching them interact with one another, this park should be more popular and more should be built around Lubbock, TX.
You cannot visit Lubbock without going to Prarie dog town! These adorable animals are an asset this city! They are adorable and fun to observe and enjoy for every age! One of BEST things about visiting!!
I read all the reviews about how fun this is, and I was still surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Not a long stop, but a hilarious and unique one.
Great spot to watch black-tailed prairie dogs and feed them healthy stuff. A fun tourist attraction as I was visiting Lubbock.
My first visit to Prarie Dog Town was in 1969 ... the overall facilities have greatly improved but the dogs are still the same and fun to watch
The prairie dogs were abundant in the afternoon. The ones enclosed in the center dirt, parking lot area are the most friendly. As you venture out of the parking lot, they get less friendly. Its interesting to watch them howl and talk to each other. Its a free and fun activity. Bring healthy snacks, because they let you feed the critters.
Kids had a blast feeding baby carrots to the prairie dogs. You could walk up to some outside the wall and they would literally come and eat the carrot from your hand, the kids loved it.
There are many, MANY Prairie Dogs here and they are so much fun to watch and interact with (feed em baby carrots).
I thought that Prairie Dog Town was a much more formal place where you buy tickets and there is a lot of formal information on these creatures. Nope, it’s basically an open area next to a parking lot within a Lubbock park. There are few signs nor educational material. But you can be up close and personal with these inquisitive creatures - and I was able to see a lot of them. There was something about the informal nature of this place without cages, walls or people that makes this appealing.
The history behind these little guys. To know that one man cared to bring them back from the brink of extinction. They are thriving. So adorable to watch them.
Cute little guys, nice little outdoor break.
Had a nice time theyre beautiful great place to exercise walk family oriented and theres always people Good Vibes
Neat place to visit if you’re in the area. They love baby carrots!
My favorite place to visit! I think the public could do a better job of keeping it clean and help pickup trash that is littered around the area there. Other than that, it ensures the prarie dogs have a safe place to live away from construction, highways, and such.
Really cool place--Groundhogs everywhere!! Not what I expected at all... this one stop made the 5hr trip worth it! And, Of course, my brother graduating from law school was more awesome, but there was some really strong competition! #reesscruggs #texastech #graduation #schooloflaw #MackenzieParkPark in Lubbock, Texas-- also features Golf, amusement park, sculpture garden, prairie dog habitat, trails & more in a lush 248-acre park.
Amazing place to get some fresh air, exercise, walk the dogs! LOVE THE DOG PARK AREA!!!Its a shame that the people of Lubbock dont take more pride in this amazing place & throw their trash in the many trash cans around the park. But other than that we had an amazing time. Love this little gem we found in our new home of Lubbock, Texas! Gonna be our new favorite spot for sure!
Really fun to feed the prairie dogs some pretty fat ones.
Loved this experience! Google maps gps will take you right to the area. Free. Located in a park, these prairie dogs roam freely in the area. Their cute squeaks and friendly approach was so much fun. These prairie dogs came about by a man who was worried about the population, so he placed 4 in the area and the population continues to grow (they are all over the place!). Many of them approached us, but you may need to be cautious- some had patches of fur missing (could be from excessive burrowing, nutrition, parasites, etc). Also, be careful driving around the area- we noticed where some had burrowed into the driveway. We went on a Wednesday evening and were nearly the only people there (1 other car).
Wonderful learning experience and peaceful
Ive never seen a prairie dog up close. Very cool and unique experience to see and feed them. We gave them Carrots my 2 year old was entertained.
Its good with several PD to see and even feed. Lots of trash that people tend to leave around. Overall good place to take the kiddos.
Super cute place! Really fun to feed the animals.
Free Fun Kid Friendly
I’ll rate this place a 5 despite getting bitten by a prairie dog because it’s my own stupid fault I was trying to feed them some of the roots I saw them picking and eating . Don’t do it... not worth the rabies and tetanus shots and plague medication and dealing with travel medical insurance (which I thankfully have) look from a safe distance. Hope this has been good for a laugh
Really awesome place, great for any age, theyre really cute, you can feed them, herbs, veggies, fruit etc.
Its so fun to watch them good place if you want to see cutest little things
Its so nice here
My wife and I like coming here to feed the prairie dogs. They like roots and plants, so we typically bring a bag of baby carrots. Ive seen people throw them celery too and they seem to enjoy. Go on a sunny day mid morning, they typically will be out eating then. A great activity for younger kids. Also, dont bring your family dog, the prairie dogs dont like it.
This is a nice place for a quick visit of the local black tail prairie dog. Get to take the younger kids to go see or anyone that likes a little bit of local history and knowledge of the wildlife.
Love being able to see the prairie dogs up close and interacting with each other, especially the young!
The prairie dogs are just doing their thing. They dont get bothered by us humans.
Love, love, loved this sooooo much. It was so neat. I played down with them and I even got to pet 1. It was a great experience for the kids.
It was cold and early, nothing to see but dirt. Plan your time there for when they would be active. Very simple park.
Unique experience. Im glad I went.
It was a fun place to go. My daughter had fun. However city needs to keep up with the trash.
Astonishingly cute!! If youre an animal lover, its a must-see.
We ABSOLUTELY enjoyed bringing the family out to feed the Prairie Dog. I highly recommend Prairie Dog Town to everyone who comes to Lubbock!
NEGLECTED!!!!Prairie Dog Town has been here forever.I it so sad that the City if Lubbock has let this great attraction fall into ruins. The walls are crumbling there is stickers EVERYWHERE. So, be careful when you take the little ones. You would think that with an enclosed attraction that someone would have thought of a water source for the prairie dogs but they didn’t.It is more of an embarrassment than a attraction for the city of Lubbock. The Prairie Dogs are very friendly and quite entertaining.Hey, City of Lubbock just another wasted opportunity to make this city better for all the tourists and residents. It doesn’t make money so they don’t care!!! B
Yes, it is a large patch of empty land. But seeing my 3 granddaughters squeal and giggle as the prairie dogs appeared and disappeared was priceless. Bring baby carrots, bread, celery or broccoli for your little ones to toss out and watch the prairie dogs scramble around munching.
This is one of those places that anyone who lives in Lubbock should see. Not so much because it is a big attraction or anything like that, but because this is somewhat unique to Lubbock. Prairie Dog Town is essentially an open field where prairie dogs live. Fun place take small children. My daughter enjoyed watching prairie dogs doing their thing.
Cute, quick pit stop. Prairie dogs everywhere!
Had a great time with the family seeing the Prarie Dogs.
10out of ten would recommend again. This place is great to bring small children and is uncrowded
Great for a 30-45 minute leg stretch
This was an awesome place to come at the end of our Lubbock trip. Great for kids. The cute prarie dogs are so friendly and not afraid to come up to you for a snack. I could spend all day here, but it was too hot and not enough shade.
The cutest lil guys out in the fields...they enjoy grapes, seeds n insects.
Neat, out off the beaten path park to view the prairie dogs close up.... Several hundred are spread out over the area.... Was worth stopping by....
Relaxing spot to go view the prairie dogs, unfortunately some of the locals view them as pests that should be exterminated due to the holes they make. Also sad that they are hand fed a lot and are given food that they shouldnt be eating.
Kids loved feeding carrots to the prairie dogs
Cool spot to just sit and chill. And wat h the critters scurry about. Its free and quiet.
Was so much fun! Go during the fall or winter. Summer and spring get pretty windy in Lubbock making the sand blow and it isnt as enjoyable, also bring carrots they love them.
Really cool place to see prairie dogs up close.
Bring healthy grains or greens. Theyll love you for it! Its a fun visit.
Lot of prairie dogs
If youre looking for prairie dogs, this is the perfect place! Our daughter teaches second grade and need some pictures of prairie dogs for one of her social studies units. We were able to get a great assortment of prairie dog pictures for her including some prairie dog pups. When you visit Prairie Dog Town be sure to take sunflower seeds, carrots or something similar to feed the prairie dogs.
Its just fun, the prairie dogs are so darn cute!
Really cool if you like nature and animals
I have never seen anything like it lots of great photos.
I went to Tech and never had been. People always ask about Prairie Dog Town. Its free, you drive up and the prairie dogs are running free. There is a two foot wall and thats it. They are out beyond in the parking lot too. They are really fun to watch but they arent aggressive like geese so dont worry. They are well fed so they dont get excited about food. Its definitely worth a visit but dont expect to spend much more than 30-45 minutes. No gift shops or touristy things. If you bring a guest from out of town make a stop!
Free, cute, open late and early, all around awesome.
Wild prairie dogs all over the place. One bit daughter when she fed it.
It needs to be fixed up!
Prairie dogs are so darn cute! It is a shame they are so destructive to mans endeavors. At least one person made the effort to create a safe haven for the adorable critters.
This place is really cool. There are cute little prairie dogs all over the place. It is in a nice park with plenty of parking.
Fun place to see a prairie dog! Everyone loved it! No fee. Clean. No restrooms. No food.
Love this place. I love to just sit and watch the animals.
Fun place to show kids the dogs. Fun time and get to educate them as wells about the critters.
So much fun!
Really enjoyed the little guys.
The prairie dogs are cute but they fight for almost anything you try to give them. Also last time there was half a dead prairie dog on the road.
So much fun watching the prairie dogs. A great spot to hang out if you have a few minutes
A very cool detour. See several prairie dogs.
Absolutely amazing place. To be able to see them interact with each other, it really is a once in a lifetime experience, for FREE! This was the highlight of visiting Texas. Friendly, very used to people, but still wild. Wish there was any person on duty for multiple reasons, parking congestion, people bringing dogs for fun to scare animals, litter, injured dogs, etc. as I couldnt find any information on what to do, as Im not from the same state Absolutely loved this place, though! Definitely a must see, at least!
Fun place to go and see the prairie dogs, but not much else at this park. Bring some carrots or bread to feed them.
Awesome. Bring snacks like carrots!! Thrse guys are everywhere, burrowing out of the park
These guys are so nice.Feed them the dry beans from the tree.No salty chips etc please..
If you want to see something cool. Go here I think this is one the coolest things I have seen in a long time. They are not afraid of humans which make them fun to watch.
This is a wonderful place to observe Prarie dogs. Be mindful not to disturb wildlife! Although these cute and cuddly creatures are kept in this small area for visitors to watch, does not mean people can turn this place into a petting zoo. During one of my visits to photograph the prarie dogs I encountered a family. The parents were encouraging the children to touch the prairie dogs. I was very concerned when I heard a child scream and cry from being bitten! Keep in mind that they are considered rodents. They can also carry the plague amongst other illnesses that can infect humans. Please, please be respectful and mindful of wildlife!
Really funny and cute
Very fun place to visit! Was surprised how much fun it was to watch Prairie Dogs playing, eating, talking to each other, and just popping in and out of tunnels.
Cool to see prairie dogs...
This place is awesome. Prairie dogs are adorable, just bring some popcorn or some other yummy snack and be prepared to be surrounded.
I got bit, and had to go to the ER. don’t get me wrong it was fun seeing all the little critters ... but I GOT BIT
Too cute!
