I visited over 15 years ago, and I dont recall this location. Otherwise I would have taken a ton of pictures of this place.I did get to see an exhibit of Lewis and Clark, at a downtown location that I recall being not far from the Slugger Museum. In my experience, Historical Societys offer a more personalized and unique historical focus, with less popularity or commercialization. And its pretty cool to not feel rushed, or lose focus by having school groups around. TIFA 2003
Beautiful space and awesome staff! Helped out with a friends wedding last weekend and Sarah and the rest of the Filson staff were absolutely amazing! The new building is gorgeous and perfect for hosting a reception and the mansion was a stunning setting for the ceremony. They truly went all out to make sure the day went perfectly!
The Filson is a one-of-a kind local history center for Louisville that is housed in two beautiful buildings—one old and one new. Excellent public lectures (some free) by speakers from here and around the world can be experienced in their beautiful hall. Their library has some great resources, and fascinating exhibits can be seen. The staff at the Filson is wonderful.
Was just walking with my girlfriend past the building and decided to go inside because we saw a small section of modern architectural style in the midst of historic district. Asked to see the gallery but there was noone to give a tour. Then another couple walked in and also wanted a tour so they decide to give us a special tour outside of usual tour hours. Our tour guide, Michael, was an excellent guide!! He told stories with enthusiasm and detail that was very interesting and engaging. The whole experience was amazing. After the gallery exhibits we toured the mansion which is also incredible! The wood craftsmanship all over the place is highly detailed and mastered. This place is a jewel in Louisville and Ive never heard of it even though Ive lived in this city 21 years.
A jewel nestled close to Central Park. A great facility for meetings, seminars, weddings, etc.... The refurbished mansion is amazing and the have very interesting rotating historical talks and displays. Check the website for tour times. The staff is engaged and very friendly making it a fun place to visit.
The Filson Historical Societys historic Ferguson Mansion contains much historic material related to Kentucky. And they have a relatively new addition as well.In addition, the Filson Historical Society hosts a variety of speakers, seminars, etc.A free tour of much of their facility is conducted at 2 p.m. Monday-Friday. A reservation is not needed. Just show up for it.I was the only person present for the 2 p.m. tour on Tuesday, May 22nd, 2018 and felt privileged to receive a one-on-one tour conducted by Heather. She showed me much of the historic mansion, which contains a few original and several other period pieces. The tour also enabled me to see some of the Societys artwork collection and their research library, as well as their addition.Heather patiently answered my numerous questions. The tour concluded with a visit to two galleries. What is displayed in the galleries changes periodically. During my visit, one of the galleries featured a large (and interesting) collection of photographs taken by a U.S. World War I soldier in Europe.I did not time the tour. But, Im guessing the tour took about an hour.A key asset of the Filson Historical Society is its research library. Even nonmembers can conduct research there. But a daily fee of $10 for nonmembers applies. I hope to return for a visit sometime to conduct some research.I encourage persons in the Louisville area who are interested in Kentucky history, seminars, lectures, etc., to consider joining. Though the Society is a private organization, my understanding is that membership is open to everyone who pays the dues. And I urge persons in the Louisville area to seek to take the free tour sometime at 2 p.m. Monday-Friday.
Beautiful refurbished antique mansion with free tours. Has unequaled historic research material.
The hours listed on here are incorrect for Saturday. The Filson is only open for the first Saturday of every month from 9-4 instead of every Saturday from 9-12. The Monday through Friday hours are correct.
