This was a great time! Our guide (I think her name was Mona) was unbelievably knowledgeable about the history of racing here. She was bubbly, friendly and welcomed the questions from our group. She encouraged photos being taken as well as social distancing to make everyone comfortable. We couldnt have asked for a better day!
Kathy was an excellent guide! ***Your ticket purchase includes a 360-degree film presentation, 2 floors of the museum, and a guided walking tour of the main grounds & stands.I spent 3 hours here (including the large gift shop). Give yourself 2 hours at least.SUGGESTION: Try to come EARLY. Thats when the horses are out training. We didnt arrive till 1:00 and no horses were out. They do have a 7:00 am golf cart tour that covers more!
Came here twice and both times learned something new. The museum is awesome! For horse lovers especially, its totally amazing. We took a tour of Millionaires Row, the second time we came here and wow! Our tour guide was amazing. Getting to look down on the track, and see the 3 NBA basketball court wide big screen took our breath away. I highly recommend the tour and the museum!
The typical tour is a little lack luster as you dont get to really go in anywhere or see anything exclusive. We did the horses and haunts your later the same night and it was amazing! We were able to see places we couldnt afford to see on Derby day. Definitely recommend tours other than the general admission tour.
Bob, 1st of all was an Amazing! Outstanding! Passionate! Loving! Tour guide. He doesnt just work there he lives for that job & it truly shows! Were ever so grateful that we was able to have him. Hes extremely knowledgeable of everything about the history & story of the downs. Thank you ever so much Bob we all truly enjoyed our Sunday afternoon with you.
What a fun day at Churchill Downs. We took the behind the scenes tour for an extra $15. So worth it. The museum is awesome.
Really neat place to go with or without kids, even with COVID precautions limiting activities. We did the walking tour and learned a good bit, and as a family from out of state I highly recommend this activity for any horse enthusiast or not.
As someone who knows very littl about racing, although I bet almost every year, the tour we took here was very informative. Gave good insight into how the horses are prepped through a mini video at the beginning. Afterwards you get to explore the museum, which holds many artifacts from over the past few years as well as other displays such as hats, dresses and horseshoes as well a great glimpse of the track from the mansion. The workers were all very polite and enthusiastic.
Very neat experience - both the museum and seeing the race track! Would highly recommend!
Diana was a wonderful tour guide, she was extremely knowledgeable and seemed to enjoy her job in sharing Churchill Downs with us. We were lucky to tour on a race day and watched some racing as part of our tour. Very informative museum.
Excellent museum about one of Americas most popular horses & hats events. I would recommend to do the tour as well. Touching the sand is just awesome. Sing the song. Drink some mint julep. Love and protect Kentucky.
Excellent experience. If you are at Kentucky you must go to the derby. The tour is outstanding.
I did the behind the scenes tour and it was very interesting and gives you more of an understanding on everything. Highly suggest this tour.
Home of the triple crown winners! A must-see for horse racing lovers. Be sure to take the after hours tour, which is an unique and educational experience.
Great museum for the whole family! There are things the kids would enjoy as well. Wonderful video that made us both year up. We did the track tour also and learned so much about Churchill Downs.
Take the 7:30 am Morning Workout tour. It was a cool experience to see the horses thundering around the track and be right up along the rail to watch them! If possible get Barry as a guide — an extremely experienced and knowledgeable expert on Churchill Downs.
The whole experience was amazing. Our guide Kayla was very sweet and knowledgable. The museum was fun inter active and informative. This was our first visit and we had a great time.
Great museum, and we really enjoyed the tour. It was easy to tell our guide enjoyed the history of the sport and telling our group about the track. Everyone there was very friendly and made it a fun experience, we will be back for more one day!
Good:- basic admission includes a Historic Walking Tour--a guided walk out to the paddock and track while learning some history and trivia- basic admission includes The Greatest Race, an awesome 360-degree visual and audio show; this is definitely a feel good show that, aside from experiencing Derby Day first hand, is the best Derby experience one can have- great selection of historic items to see/touch, from starting gates and bugles to silks and saddles- beautiful, historic facilityCautions:- upon entering, your timeslots for The Greatest Race and Historic Walking Tour will be chosen; the amount of time between these two can vary as well as your personal speed touring the museum exhibits; you may find everything scheduled perfectly for your pace, you may find yourself bored if the time between the two features is quite longI really thought The Greatest Race would be cheesy show in the gimmicky theater, but it was fantastic! Any out-of-town, museum-loving guests should definitely visit. (And locals should certainly visit at least once.) More than a museum, I would define my visit as an experience--and a great one, at that!
Very informative museum. Loved the movie they show. Whoever put it together needs a raise. We got the mini tour and enjoyed it.
Great museum with interactivity and plenty of exhibits, plus a great 360 video about the Kentucky Derby and entirety of events leading up to it. The tour wasnt as impressive as I had hoped. The tour guide was knowledgable, yet he could only bring us into the stands area, then right back out, and not the center of the track as well.
I couldn’t visit this place because of a staff miscommunication and the museum wouldn’t book us tickets on the same morning of the tour, they stated tour tickets should be booked before 3 pm the day prior.
Did the museum AND tour...got to go to the track! Great time!
Did the general admission tour. Only thing Id like to add is that the experience would have been much more special had we seen an actual Derby race during the movie. For instance, the derby run of the great Secretariat.
This was a great experience! We were able to visit the museum and go track side for a brief tour. Our tour guide was awesome and took the time to answer all questions. Very knowledgeable!Gift shop was pleasant and fun as well.
I went right after they opened after COVID-19. They unfortunately wouldnt let you walk the grounds where the Derby takes place, but they did make up for it by having a gallery tour. Since there was only a few people there, we had our own personal tour guide for 20ish minutes. We had Fergerson who was great and very informative! It was very neat to see the hats, the outfits, the trophies, and other parts of Derby history. I wished they had more older items on display. The majority of the hats were brand new and there was only one old dress from the 1930s. I would have loved to learn more about its early history as opposed to the newer traditions. The cafe was opened and I order a mint julep and oaks lily. The mint julep was bitter due to the bourbon, but I loved the oaks lily drink! The cafe also had some horse graves nearby which were kind of interesting. This is a very unique experience and part of Louisville.
I always enjoy coming to the museum and going on the walking tour. Today was my 3rd trip here. Heather is a great tour guide, knowledgeable and doesnt speak so fast I cant understand her. :)
Had my retirement from the Navy ceremony there in 2013 and it was everything this Kentucky sailor could have asked for.
If you want to see the super bowl of horse racing, then you have to see the Museum that honors the 146 winners and the people that make it possible. What a great experience to walk around and see the racetrack.
Beautiful place for Horse racing.
I enjoyed learning about the history, and the pomp and circumstances (with out the pomp). The movie was the experience.COVID compliantSuper staff
This was a such a great experience!!! We had a private tour with an extremely knowledgeable guide. Everything was beautiful and the staff working were all friendly. We had a 60 person group for a company event and the dinner they offered us was so far past amazing!!!I did not upload any pictures of artifacts because everyone should make this place a “need to go” travel destination!!!
Very nice. The surround movie was very cool and good quality.
Awesome place to visit! Great information and the tour was interesting to say the least! Ferguson is the guide to have!
Awesome place! Incredibly nice and helpful staff. Recommend highly!
Take your time and give it at least half a day. Make sure you see the high definition movie and you arrive on a race day which is included with admission. The essence of this sport is difficult to understand, but a visit to this museum will help.
Enjoyed the nostalgia and history of Churchill Downs. Our tour guide was funny and thorough. We had a great time.
The behind the scenes tour was informative and fun. Well worth it, thanks for the great experience Bob
I ordered a number of mint julep glasses from the museum store, they were higher in price than ones available on ebay, but I thought they would be new and high quality. I was wrong. For the second time I received a glass that had flawed printing. I didnt notice the first time in time to return. I tried 2 times to contact the store, first 3 weeks ago when I received the item and again a week ago. I havent even received a return call much less resolution. I would have had better luck on ebay. Im out the money, but if you are ordering from the store beware!** Athough a bit delayed, possibly because of the current situation, I received follow up from Kristina at the museum store. She wanted to make sure to do whatever was necessary to resolve the issues with the glasses. I am happy that she wanted to make things right and I will try another order in the future. **
What a great experience! The movie “The Greatest Race” was really well done. We took the van tour to the barns and infield and our guide, Mike, was fantastic – full of information, trivia and humour. We also did the 30 minute walking tour which, again, was full of information, trivia and humour. Because our time was limited, we didn’t get as much time in the museum as we would have liked, but what we saw was really good. Can’t wait to watch the Derby this year after actually being there, and definitely hope to come back and spend more time in the museum.
Lots of History and Family friendly.
This museum is amazing for a horse race. I want expecting much but as soon as I watched the movie they provided I knew this museum would be great. The amount of money spent here is probably up in the upper tiers for museums as the amount of information provided covers everything from the jockeys to the horses to even the clothes that are worn. I wish I had more time when I came as you can easily spend 2+ hours here. Worth the visit for just the movie alone.
I always wanted to go the the Derby as a child and finally made it in my senior years. I attended the preview dinner of the grand opening of the Derby; cost was about $150 per person. It was a buffet with so-so food but it was constantly being restocked. Beverages were extra. I cant remember but the Mint Julep with souvenir glass was about $15 each. Service was excellent. We had our own betting lines and ceiling televisions all around the room. It was worth the price. Our seats were at the finish line - covered and opened balconies. It was just like what you saw on the television - women wearing the gorgeous hats and men in their race horse clothes.
A wonderful experience. Lots to see. Read the history of the Derby Race. The tour is good.
Great place to visit, for anyone who loves horse racing
Nestled inside the Mecca of Horse Racing... the Kentucky Derby Museum! If you love the Sport of Kings this is an absolute must!!! It creatively displays the history of Churchill Downs, the Derby and the multitude of Derby winners and the jockeys. It starts of with a fantastic and immersive movie experience and includes a tour of the track. To enjoy and take in all it has to offer, give yourself 2 hours. Very reasonably priced.
The hot brown panini was delicious at the cafe! The museum is amazing and the 360 degree movie is amazing! This facility has many restrooms and is super clean! Such friendly staff. World class place!
Never thought I’d see this place in my lifetime, but I am so glad I had the opportunity to do so today! Really great museum, terrific tour and a wonderful place to spend 2-3 hours at. Wish we would have been there during race time! I would love another opportunity to come back and if I do, I will be online ASAP getting tickets for a race!
I love horses and I had went here when I was a teenager. Good times. Very fun
Totally awesome! Great tour with knowledgeable staff. The movie is a moving and thunderous 360 degree immersion. Watch it! The museum itself shows all the history and the paddock tour is worth the extra coin if you love horses.
Highly recommend the behind the scenes tour!
Little museum with all you want to know about Churchill Downs.
Excellent experience. Kentucky culture very well represented
Great presentation and historical information. The tour of the track is interesting and our guide shared a lot about the history of Churchill Downs.
Just wanted a cap for a friend and tgey were great
Loved all the pictures and interesting facts about the races.
Brings the excitement of the Derby to life. Do the early morning golf cart tour.
Great tour of Churchill Downs and some good exhibits. The 360 movie about the Derby was really cool, but the brief tour of Churchill Downs was the best part. You really get a good tour of the high points of the track and race. Would definitely recommend doing it you are in the area.
Have a wonderful time at the museum. So much history. Great artifacts and pictures. Just a really good time. Definitely worth going to.
One if my most favorite museums. A must if you love horses and enjoy watching the most exciting 2 minutes in sports! Great memorabilia from some of thoroughbred racings most legendary winners like Secretariat and American Pharaoh. The 360 degrees,3D movie is a must see and very inspiring. Films are available of all the Derbys since they were filmed. Between the many interactive exhibits and the fantastic gift shop, this museum does not disappoint.
Interesting museum to learn about horse racing. The regular tour is alright but you should try to book the Barn and Backside Van Tour during a race day during the race which is what we did, by coincident. Youll get to see lots of action as many people getting the horses ready. youll also get to see the horses going to the starting gate at a closeup which you cannot see as well from the grandstand.
Im not a big horse racing fan, but being such an iconic event, we thought we would check it out. The 360 movie was interesting, but the highlight was the walking tour. The tour guide was informative and made sure everyone could hear and understand. The memorabilia was fun and unique and there were a few interactive things for kids.
Enjoyed the museum and tour, but do wish we had been taken around to more places, like the infield and the mansion. Very friendly and informed staff.
It was a lot of fun! Very good history presentation and the tour had a lot of information for novices like me. Highly recommend! The staff was very knowledgeable and was willing to answer the questions of everyone in our group.
Great history lessons, guide was animated and knew his derby history.
Okay, but not exciting if we were allowed to see the inside.
Awesome museum, for the best horse racing track in the world. This is home of the greatest two minutes in sports. If you have not been and iadd it to your bucket list. Do not miss your chance for one of the best times of your life.
We did the basic admission tour. It was cute, but very short and nothing really wowed me. The tour guide was great and answered any questions, and I learned a few pieces of information but I still was left wanting a little more.
Churchill downs is a place to visit, you can almost feel the excitement of the Kentucky Derby
Great experience and very family friendly and interactive. Definite MUST see if in the area. Great knowledgeable staff.
This is a great place to learn about the Kentucky Derby. I really didnt know anything about, but know I really want to attend one! Tour was great and I would highly recommend it. Museum was well organized and gift shop was affordable.
You can watch any Derby race that you would like to see and its just beautiful inside if you havent been you ought to go
Fun and informative place to visit, particularly on a race day.
This was $15 for adults and was enjoyable. The video gives a good background and then the tour out to the race track is more interesting as a result. I managed to do the video and movie in a little under an hour. The museum has some nice features so give yourself a little time for that too.
Good tour. Cool museum. Tour guide was great.
Was great the movie was great. Also the walking tour was nice. Wish had more time to explore more.
A magnificent place with a lot of history and the guided tour was very informative. There were some construction going but didnt impact our tour. The museum has a lot of stuff and video and its definitely worth couple hours overall.
I was not a Derby fan..... Until this experience!!! My daughters, ages seven and nine, and I had a ball learning about this annual event. 145 consecutive years and counting! There is tons of information blended with interactive exhibits and of course, the race track! Even race newbies like us can enjoy this museum!
Great museum and tour. Makes you want to come back on race day.
If you love the Kentucky Derby, you have to visit the museum!! Amazing
Must see. Admission was sixteen bucks. But the extra twenty for the executive tour was well worth it.
The work out tour at 7:30am is well worth waking up early. Amazing museum
Located in Churchill Downs Louisville Kentucky. Very interesting and informative museum. A must for racing enthusiasts.
We went on a random off season day. The tour was amazing. The service at Derby cafe was excellent. The drink were great and so was the food. The whole place is unbelievably clean. Staff is amazing and knowledgeable
I learned a lot while visiting the Kentucky Derby Museum. The tour was very informative and the theatre viewing was also nice.
Awesome place. The tour options are very nice, and there is a lot of info, even for the casual fan or the tourist that is just visiting for the fun of it.
Had a great time at Churchill Downs and it was worth the admission and I would go again. Staff was extremely nice and a special kudos to the parking staff who made sure that our elderly parents were taken from the parking lot to the museum and then returned us back to our car.The good:most of the tour is indoors and air conditioned and the movie is excellent in its 360 surround Cinema. It was nice to see the over Century of horse racing history that was there. The horse race that we got to see was exhilarating and the family really enjoyed it.The bad:There was no restaurant or Cafe open the day we were there and with being there for 5 hours you do get hungry. So my advice is if were going bring some snacks and drink.I hope this helps...Forgive my pictures as I am not a photographer
Amazing! So much history.
Beautiful museum with interactive displays for the whole family. Clean and they have hand sanitizer in various areas around the museum for your safety
Loved it! We got to see horses training on the track! The guide was very knowledgeable.
Had a tour and our guide was amazing and just to stand where all that history has taken place.
Being at this historical site was amazing. Really worth spending an afternoon. I can only imagine the beauty of being part of the real Derby race.
Very interesting good place to visit and understand how valuable to the city.
Visited the museum, and if you are a fan of the Kentucky Derby, you will appreciate the museum! My daughter became a fan by the time we left. Staff was friendly, tour was enjoyable. Prices for museum and food was reasonable, gift shop was a bit higher, but that is expected. Highly recommend!
Excellent museum tour. Friendly, clean, free parking. I will upgrade from general admission next time.
A very fun musuem to visit. This place is full of interesting facts and I learned so much about horseracing in general. The video was good to watch, interesting and sad at the end. The musuem has various items and tidbits of information. Staff were friendly and the gift shop was full of items to purchase. The brownie mix was delicious. A great place to start the day on a Sunday. The admission process was cheap and you can go at your own pace. A must visit in Louisville.
The tour was amazing!! So much history an information. So much to see!! Totally loved it!!
Such a cool place to visit
