Very nice place, the bathrooms were very clean, the grounds are not good or the grass is not green but because their doing there part to conserve water. But a good place to come visit your love ones
Big, packed tight, historical landmark cemetery just east of the heart of downtown L.A. Many burials date to at least the 1870s. In addition to noted L.A. personalities of the past, burials include large sections of Japanese and Armenians. Mostly reasonably well maintained grounds. Knowledgeable and helpful staff at cemetery office on site.
Good area. Serene. Would like better weekend staff to assist with grave location as well as Holiday
Historical marker at 1st St & Lorena Ave inscription:Established in 1877, Evergreen Cemetery is the oldest secular cemetery still operating in Los Angeles and is the final resting place of many prominent Los Angeles citizens. At its inception, Evergreen Cemetery dedicated land for a public cemetery for indigent residents of Los Angeles and those with no known next-of-kin. Between the years 1877 and 1924, approximately 13,000 residents of Los Angeles with no known next-of-kin or means to afford a private burial, were interred in this public potters field.” A portion within was designated for Chinese burials which, because of discrimination, were prohibited in Evergreen Cemetery. Records indicate that ultimately about 1,400 Chinese were buried at a required fee of $10 each, while all others were buried at no cost. The Chinese community erected a memorial shrine there in 1888, which is now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. By 1924, the overall cemetery was replaced by a crematorium built by the County of Los Angeles. Subsequently, the grave markers were removed and the exact location of the potters field” was forgotten. While few burial markers are visible, forgotten gravesites still remain. Charlie was a prominent person who was buried in the potters field. Mr. Yee Hay was born in 1846 in Dik Hoy, Toisan County, China and died at age seventy on June 20, 1916. He and his wife Chan See lived and raised their children in Ventura before moving to Los Angeles Chinatown. Many descendants of Mr. Yee Hay and his family presently live in Southern California. A grave marker for T.E. Buzbee was recovered from the area of the potters field discovered during Metros construction. Mr. Buzbee was born on August 12, 1865 and died at age eighteen on February 01, 1883. He is believed to have run away from his Colorado home at age seventeen and is thought to have living relatives in Empire, Colorado. On June 22, 20o5 during the widening of Lorena Street due to the Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension construction, approximately 174 burial sites were discovered. In 2009, after efforts to locate next of kin, appropriate documentation and historical research, those individuals remains were respectfully reburied within Evergreen Cemetery next to the historic Chinese Shrine. You are invited to visit their final resting place.
I love to spend some time with my bro RIP
When I got there..( everyone was dead)... thats good we dont need them walking around...
So much history, good n bad. LAs finest architects, rebels and historic legends lie here.
A nice place to lay to rest love one.
Mouldering historic cemetery, that looks like a cemetery ought to. Apparently they are currently dealing with a grass blight, but thats a feature in my opinion, not a bug.
The staff worked great with our services.
Interesting fact... Evergreen Cemetery is the first cemetery in Los Angeles that allowed people of color to be buried there. There are two generations of my family buried there. The previous owners ran the cemetery into the ground literally. My father and I worked to clean up the area as did other families. The new owner got stuck with decaying plumbing and the terrible grounds. It appeared they were attempting to fix the place up. Due to the lock down, I have been unable to water the grass around the two rows where my family is buried. The owners didnt water at all... I went today only to discover whoever mowed the weeds left a huge pile of weeds where grass is growing. I had to hand rake them so I could water.
Lots of graves. My grandparents are there plus my Aunt
This cemeterys amazing! Huge, with many late Angelinos of all races buried here. Too bad they dont water the grounds, if they did, this cemetery would be beautiful!
The grass is dead except at front entrance. It looks like the place needs grass seeds and water.
Close by to the house good for a morning jog
During the Summer; Dry grass! During the raining Season(s); Beautiful grass! Not like Rose Hills; ALWAYS GREEN & BEAUTIFUL! My Father is buried here, but not by my choice. RIP Dad.
Good place to spent time with love ones that passed away
Great for long walks and running.
Great jog and push-up spot.
Good employees. No HEADSTONES of My AUNT!!!
Beautiful cemetery, very helpful staff and reasonable price, good services, the Grass is greener than before but definitely need more more water, keep it up please
No grass looks like hay not kept up. Would not recommend this cemetery to anyone. Cant even find my mother in law stone.
There is no grass upkeep is horrible
Our Mom 93 yrs old came a long way to visit her parents gravesite. It was embarrasing! Dry weeds, bugs... 1 cup would not come out the other had a hole in it. We had to go get a 711 plastic cup. It was very sad for our Mom.
Im upset. I drove for 30mins because google adresss website said open today- till 4pm Sunday.I tried to call before hand. Rings no anwering service message that would be helpful. So i get here and on the gate says closed due to covid-19.There are vehicles parked by office. And maintenance is on grounds working. No one answers the phone, several other people showed up. As to there surprise as well/ no one is able to enter.Poor customer relations!!!
Been coming since i was 3 or 4. When my first sister past. My 2nd sis past when i was 21. Im 27 and im going today.
Nice place for jogging...if only the trash thats on the sidewalk can be removed
Graves are supposed to face the west. Not any random direction
I love being able to spent time with my bestie after all these years its is kept clean and the workers there are very helpful, once your inside and theyre about to close they sometimes let you stay a little longer in you just got there.
ALL THE GRASS IS DEAD,PLEASE DO SOMETHING
My parents and grandparents are buried at Evergreen Cemetery. Its looking much better compared to several years ago. The grass is greener and well trimmed. The water cans for flowers are back filled with debris and were unusable.
Worst cemetery if I could give negative stars I would this cemetery my dad is buried here i wish I had the funds to take him out and put him somewhere else
Me and my family have been going there every Memorial Day to leave flowers for our departed relatives who first arrived in the U.S.A. in the late 1800.Saying that, given a choice, I wouldnt want to be buried there. Its in a less then ideal area and they dont maintain the location very well. The grass is usually dead, some of the water faucets are right in or next to old grave sites (I even heard years ago the water faucets eventually broke some graves open revealing the dead body inside) and some of the grave stones had graffiti on them, including on the back of my great-grandpas gravestone.
It looks beautiful.
Funny how the name is Evergreen and yet most of the grass is dead and brown
Enjoy going to visit mom.I get much comfort
It used to b so much greener...now it looks its in the desert.
I never knew about this cemetery until my grandma was buried here. I cant say there is another place quite like it. Its Beautiful even though the grass is completely dead.
Historical Los Angeles cemetery it is the final resting place of s number of old Los Angeles historical figures.
Every time I visit my mothers grave I get very sad just by seeing how here grave looks it seems as they never clean. The grass is very dry. I regret so much not putting her on another cemetery.
Mouldering historic cemetery, that looks like a cemetery ought to. Apparently they are currently dealing with a grass blight, but thats a feature in my opinion, not a bug.
Went here with my friend to vist her Nana and we got lost. The staff helped us locate her and we were able to find her.
Its been a little over a year since I have been here to place flowers on my Grandparents grave sight and I just couldnt believe how unkempt this cemetery has become. Its like they dont even bother watering the the grass anymore. It was all dead and brown. Not acceptable for this type of establishment!!! They dont even deserve the 1 star, but unfortunately, you have to choose something.
As a Funeral Home, we love working with Evergreen Cemetery and Crematory for their burial and Cremations services, Their entire staffs are very professional
I have love ones their
My father is buried there if I were to be able to move him I would the land seems to be very poorly a nun maintenanced. The pleasure is only just to visit my dad. If he wasnt buried there I wouldnt be visiting. A landmark should be taken care of not destroyed
Its a huge cemetery and the people working there are friendly. The grass is not green but dont expect their office to be open on Sundays.
I was so saddened to see the condition of the grounds keeping. Its more clay than grass. To know some of our greatest people are resting in this state of decay is sad. Eddie Anderson lived a wonderful life and paved the way for many African Americans and yet to see the way his grave looked isnt fair for our deeply loved departed. I heard there are new owners, I hope they can renew it to the beauty the people resting deserve.
Beautiful cemetery, large, with nice roads, chapel, & stand up headstones. Some areas not level, wear appropriate shoes. Some street vendors sell flowers nearby. You may need a map/directions if you dont know where a grave is located.Best to lock your car to be safe when you park at graveside.
Its a nice place to run
Cemetery is unkept, grass is dry. If you want green grass you need to take your own water hose. Cost of buying a plot there is not any less than other cemeteries where the grounds keepers maintain a beautiful green lawn.
Small quaint cemetery and not too crowded. Also a great chance to see the Japanese Americans that fought for our country. May they rest in peace.
I like to read the old grave monuments from, the late 1800s early 1900s, of the people that helped shape L.A
Unkept. Grass cuttings not picked up.
Mouldering historic cemetery, that looks like a cemetery ought to. Apparently they are currently dealing with a grass blight, but thats a feature in my opinion, not a bug.
Very old & historic cemetery in East Los Angeles. Theres a Japanese section of upright headstones. Movies are filmed here in other sections. The sign posted says its an internatl cemetery with Japanese, Hispanic & I believe Vietnamese burials. Well kept landscaping.
Evergreen Cemetery they try to keep it up as well as they can staff is always willing to help you out if you cannot remember the Lot location is very serene nice place to visit your loved ones Norwalk Raider
Would like for them to make cementery to look nice
Tranquility and peace
If youre ever here for an Anthropology research project theres a diverse set of data you can gather. (I know its weird to be writing this)
It was my first time being there for a sad reason obviously, but I saw that most of the property is just dried grass everywhere. You can tell that the property owner doesnt care about the visual concept. I would not bury a relative Here. I would chose somewhere where theres more greenery.
Excellent place to go jogging or a walk
My Mothers Resting Place
This is a very old cemetery and one of a kind.
Its not well kept and the grass is dying
Its a cemetery! A very old one. How can you rate it? No, it is not pretty nor is the landscape. A historic place. Its been around a very long time.
Its a somewhat cheap and old cementary .. they just got new owners so there might be some few changes. My uncle and grandpa are here.. the staff is nice and helpful and its nice and quiet.
Its a ideal place to walk around with family or friends.
The renovations are looking good. Im so glad this historical landmark is getting the care it deserves. The staff are very friendly and very informative about the cemeterys history.
The people there are helpful and friendly
Most of my relatives are buried here and the cemetery is very close to my house
Needs more time and care of the lawn which is slowly getting better Ive seen Hollywood or filming crew inside doing some kind of movie? But its been filmed by the making of mask with Cher.
One of the oldest cemeteries in l.a. Historic. Many famous people buried there
I went to a close friends funeral today, and was totally disappointed and embarrassed! The grass was so dryed up, and unkeeped. They were fined and seized by the
This cemetery Is so unkept and the new owners are just borderline disrespectful towards the dead and also the veterans who are buried here.Im not going to say that the last owners were any better but at least they let you decorate your loved ones tombstone and never told you to take It down.As I stated before the new owners of this establishment are just disrespectful and have no regard for the dead and their families because every Wednesday they take down any and all of the decorations you put on a tombstone (Including veterans flags) This Is just unacceptable and rude, not only that but they straight up just don’t care about anything other than money, There’s a WW1 veterans grave right next to my dead relatives grave and every time I go and visit the veterans grave Is covers In dirt to the point where you can’t even see his name or anything on the tombstone anymore and that’s just disrespectful how can you do that to somebody who was willing to sacrifice them selves for this country and for the people who live In It, not only that they take off the flags who are placed on veterans graves, you don’t just do that to a veteran they severed this country and they deserve the upmost respect and for you to that to them just because “iTs oUr pOliCy” Is god damn disgustingly rude and disrespectful.Show some god damn respect to the dead and stop taking off what we put on there tombs.
Very old, shuld be in a movie
Very professional staff, and was very easy to work with for funeral arrangements.
Old cemetery with an interesting old building. I wish they could water it more with recycled water, yeah?
Good memorial for my aunt Paulette. Nice chapel.
Not so sure about this rating, its a cemetery. Dont usually expect much. Well kept, and the few times Ive needed help theyve been pretty nice.
Peaceful, grass was a little dry but it looked like there were some new sprinklers put in. What was annoying was that they were filming and I had to park farther away and it was difficult for my Mom to walk to the gravesite
Nice place for a jogg think you could handle it. Lots of people come here to walk or run.
RIP Big sis
Pretty good
Its a good place to exercise yourselfe
My grandson is buried here and they dont mind if i water the grass in the whoe area. Sometimes i spend hours there just relaxing. Great peaceful place!
Beautiful old peaceful cemetery
They need to take care of that cemetery that cemetery looks spooky
I have family buried there but it is something special for me to visit them.
Greatest
Beware a pack of coyotes live at this cemetery killing local dogs and cats. If you visit make sure you dont bring any food, children or pets with you.
Super old school a lot of family is there looks like a scene from an old movie in fact last time I was there NCIS was filming the part of an episode in the cemetery because it is so old most of the gravesite and tombstones are standing up and they are huge monuments quite interesting as opposed to how they do it these days not in the best part of town but if someone you love resides there regardless its someone you love
Lots of famous LA people are buried here
Thats heaven on earth
