The Hammer Museum is located in Westwood Village in Wilshire Blvd. Next to UCLA and convenient to Beverly Hills. The museum has a small permanent collection of European paintings. The other galleries have modern art. Museum free, parking $7.00 for 3 hours validate at the museum. Great museum, worth a visit for sure!
A lovely museum with 100% free admission. Close to the UCLA campus, this is a stop you must make if you’re checking out the UCLA campus. It’s even worth a trip on its own or as a visit to the nearby Annenberg Space for Photography. This museum has many unique pieces of contemporary art that you wouldn’t find anywhere else in the world. Also contains a lot of studying spaces for students, places to relax and chill in the courtyard with unique chairs that act more like tops. Friendly staff and easy to soak up some time enjoying a couple exhibition halls worth of cutting-edge art.
I like to attend their talks/ screenings/ conversations. They usually start around 7:30 on a weekday and are almost always free, but sometimes the movies they screen are like $10. Check online for what they have upcoming, but it’s almost always very interesting. Parking is $7 after... 6pm, I believe? They have exhibits that rotate out/ switch, as well as their “permanent hammer collection”... fun top chairs that spin and engage your inner kid, lively opening nights with music, and a restaurant inside that I can’t speak on since I’ve only ever ordered one drink.
This place was pretty cool. It literally is just murals painted on a wall for selfie purposes, which I cant complain. I skipped over a couple murals though that were okay. and some were harder to take pictures because of the angles and the amount of people. It did help though that they had markers on the floor of where to stand and point your camera phone to get the best photo. Big ups to them for thinking of that.
Great idea to get more folks to view the Academy, although 3-4 hours is not enough to see everything. The option for food and drinks is a nice addition. We saw maybe half of the exhibits, and it was nice to not have crowds to fight. It would have been nice to have more volunteers staffing key points to provide more backgrounds information, as I did appreciate the one near the Anaconda and the parrots in the Rainforest.
Lots of amazing works in this Gallery! Free Admission too! Had works by Gauguin, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Titian, and more! It was truly stunning to finally see some of these in person instead of in a book or on television! This place is a must to stop by if you are in the Westwood Neighborhood of Los Angeles!! Check it out!
Great free museum to visit. I was surprised to find 3 Van Gogh paintings! I highly recommend it. Very modern with parking structure and a food court.
Pretty underwhelming aside from the 3 Van Gogh paintings and cool chairs in the courtyard. I definitely expected more. You can see everything in less than an hour.
This pieces of arts are the best! I think this time, Hammer has made its best selection. They also had visual arts as well this time! I can tell this time I had my best time at HammerMuseum!
Excellent place to have a night out with honey or family. Great outdoor dinning area. Fabulous place to host events, conferences, and study groups. ️️
Very nice, free museum! Easy parking. Multiple, interesting exhibitions. Came to see one of my favorite impressionist paintings in the permanent collection but was not disappointed by the rest of the museum. Will definitely go back! :)
Loved it! This place offers one of the most extraordinary paintings Ive seen or art in general for free. We used the metro to get here not sure if parking is free or available. The monitors are nice and friendly also. Quiet and very pleasant place to relax and have a personal time.
Free. That alone would entice me in a city like LA. The best I can say about the Hammer is that the more I look back the more I can say it was right there at the forefront of conversations, tackling topics in order to inform and challenge its audience.
Staff is always friendly. You MUST try the skinny chairs in the courtyard. My kids and I were so terrified at first to spin all the way around without spotting each other. Then a random guy came by to give us a pep talk and guaranteed that you wont fall. Once we got past the fear it was so much fun. It was really fun. And afterward my daughter said, I am brave. We all are. That moment made my day.
Aside that this is a great museum we love its garden with spinning chairs, ping pong tables, and also a souvenir store where kids spend a lot of time exploring. You can play with all the toys that they sell.
The Hammer Museum at Westwood, Los Angeles, CA was opened in 1990 founded by Dr. Armand Hammer. In 1992 the UCLA took over the management of the museum and in 1999 the Hammer Contemporary Collection was created which at this time holds over 2000 artworks. The museum has dynamic exhibitions including lectures, symposia, film series, readings, and musical performances that are open and free to public. The museum also added a 300-seat theater and a Cafe plus the internationally known Hammer Projects and a series of public programs featuring influential authors, artists and creative thinkers.A great museum to visit and enjoy the art collection.
The museum has both contemporary and classical art. You can see up close and personal with a van Gogh and see other artists. Its amazing lighting of the artwork, very spacious and it also has an area for table tennis. You can also have a bite to eat or find a really interesting gift at the second floor shop. Its free admission so taking children is cost effective.
I really love this museum. Its small enough to visit and see all the galleries without experiencing museum fatigue. Great art and always free. They host fun music events and movie showings often. And the gift shop is awesome!
Rarely have I witnessed such a dazzling array of hammers. We were fortunate enough to encounter a guest exhibit of historic mallets and gavels during our visit. Our ticket also gave us entry to the adjacent nail salon, which was, to be frank, quite disappointing. It consisted solely of women sitting in chairs having mindless conversations whilst teenage girls painted the ends of their fingers. We had been looking forward to a collection of fascinating tacks, nails and pins rather than what I can only conclude was some sort of surreal performance installation.
This place was beautiful. I went there with friend. Great experience. Beautiful art.
Today we are #1 of recycled new style & history of we can do much on better moment together.
I want to live here, thank you hammer it’s always such a joy to visit. I’ll drive to you any chance I get
Great idea to get more folks to view the Academy, although 3-4 hours is not enough to see everything.
The Hammer is like the punk rock little sister of the other local museums and I LOVE IT. Order takeout from Kazunori down the street and sit in the atrium and people watch. Glorious gift shop, as well.
This is a great place for contemporary art exhibitions. They have a couple of different and interesting ones throughout the year. They also have a beautiful courtyard where you can sit and enjoy reading a book or chatting with a friend. Theres no fee to visit the exhibitions or enter the courtyard. They also have a gift shop with visiting. I fully enjoy it every time.
Usual modern art museum in an impressive building.Part of the University of California so I take it the works here are very high-end student pieces.Has a few galleries and pleasant spot to chill.Love the Heatherwick chairs to spin and mess about on!The museum shop is better than others so its worth popping in.
Family Day, Art beyond borders was very heart feltanf with all the controversy going on around us is this day and age it was very humbling to have experienced this with our little ones and watch them enjoy themselves and learn ️ to love with words.
Nice quiet museum. Ping pong table upstairs is great! Free admission but parking is not.
NOTHING about the Hammer works for me. The galleries, the art and vibe are off. The only installation I really liked was the staircase mural.
As someone who is normally not a fan of modern art museums, I was pleasantly surprised. Friendly staff, interesting and interactive pieces all around. Not too pretentious. Admission is free (!!)
Very nice musuem. If you park in their garage, remember to get your stub validated to get $6 flat rate. The museum is free.
Didnt know Hammer museum hosts events like the one I went a month ago. The event is called Arts Party: Wasteland which had some art workshops going on every floor. They had poetry readings inspired by the art pieces that you see in their galleries. They also had other workshops like keychain-making, stenciling, and even making some head pieces you can use for your rave festivities. They also had live music going on provided by their guest DJs so you know a museum can definitely be lit.
Lively, easy to walk through and they host very interesting artists.
Went to made in la. Great experience. Such a diverse sampling of local talent presented in an exciting, premier style opening.
The place is nice, Free, kid friendly, they have an area with TABLE TENNIS (ping pong). Its adjacent to the UCLA campus. Handicap accessible parking and restrooms. Eateries are in abundance surrounding the place.
This museum has a permanent collection of a small number of European paintings. Other galleries have modern art. The building is undergoing some form of façade renovation, and although it is covered, it is difficult to see. All open galleries are accessible through the central courtyard. You can stay here for two hours and see all this. The museum is free to enter, the museum is parked for $7 and is valid for 3 hours.
Great place to spend a day and enjoy the art of different artists in one place.Staff are really nice and in general it’s a great experience.Park in the flat rate parking and enjoy the area after the museum. The street parking is limited to 2 hours and it’ll be more expensive. There are some good cafes in the neighborhood I liked this kettle by the way!
I came here twice and the first occasion was for the robot nightlife, and the second was for nightlife live. I honestly was not expecting tons of people to show up. The line to get inside is always long but it moves quickly.
Center of calm in Westwood, with free admission & spacious courtyard.
Its always free admission to the public. The Hammer presents phenomenal exhibitions. They are very diverse, cultural, and community based.
Would be 3.5 stars. Parking was $7 in their garage. Entry to the museum is free which is great. Just check in at the reception desk. Only three collections/installations were available for viewing. Courtyard is nice and they have a restaurant.
Very cool museum. Admission is free. Theres a nice outdoor space with a cafe.
The only thing that is annoying is that the museum volunteers will keep telling you not to touch something, not to pass by something ... When you are not going to touch or pass. Hmm the rest is great!
Awesome museum! Always great exhibitions!
Loved it!! Im from Argentina and I felt so comfortable here. They have a lot of things about gender and skin equality. The explication that you find in the works of art is also in Spanish.
Nice and relatively small museum
Max Hoopers art: amazing!! Vincent van Gogh Hospital at Saint-Rémy original paint!!!
The facility is one unique design and special to Los Angeles. It is at good location and easily accessible to public. The volunteers are very well trained and capable to guide the visitors. The toilet is clean and tissue is available, the washing basin is simple with hand wash soap.
Its a nice place they have free admission right now so take advantage
Visited the Hammer Museum for the first time last week even though I first studied at UCLA over 9 years ago. I wish that I had visited the museum sooner! It’s such a nice place to relax and indulge in some great art pieces.
This place is so awesome, I never even got to look at art, I danced all night. You will find lots of well dressed artsy people here. A lot of the artsy people can dance too. The lady that took my bag at the front helped me write a song. I love this place, you will too. Take a friend or someone you want to impress.
Educational and somewhat amusing. Not especially kid friendly. People spend roughly 40-90 min here.Fun. Full of art- maybe too full to the point of nauseating.
1st time here and its beyond a beautiful establishment..
Amazing museum if you are around westwood. We were watching movie in iPic theatres across the street and eat our breakfast in an amazing Cravings restaurant next to theatre, then walked down the Wilshire and visited Hammer. Great time
Nice art museum and its fun. Good to take pictures. BTW, its free to get in.
Cutting edge and very hip. If art isnt your thing, the people watching is just as entertaining.
Small but important and valuable collection. Additional exhibits were captivating, drawing you in to experience every detail. Exceeded my expectations...and admission is free!
There are a lot of things to see and do in this museum. The place is a perfect place for bonding with your kids. It is also educational, too. I definitely recommend this place.
Hammer Museum is a place worthy of a 3 star rating. What I like about this place was its marvelous pieces of Victor Hugo and the way everything is organized is pleasant for close viewing. I just had 2 problems of the place. Before I address these problems, know that it is a free admission to enter the gallery. My first problem is parking. It costs money to park, taking free out of the picture. It is also in the middle of the Santa Monica St having further issues in traffic. The way to get to the Hammer Museum is inconvenient. The second problem is the staff. When you enter the art galleries, it is empty. No visitors there, moreover, there are 5+ observers in the room with you, providing an uncomfortable vibe. I know it is to keep the paintings in check, but come on? These people are wasting precious time standing around when no one is there! You only need 1 or 2 persons to walk around and keep the so called security at bay! Anyways, this museum is worthy of its 3 star rating because of creepiness and inconvenience.
Amazing place and the event was awesome.
I found this museum through a great site that lists all the museums and galleries in L.A. county and surrounding areas. I recommend searching for it. Ill add it here later. The internet read about the Hammer sounded intriguing which inspired me to try it. Its in west L.A. on a corner with paid parking below. The opening installation covered two full walls and it was a mix of textures and 3-d materials. Its abstract and well done. The galleries had exhibits that were either your taste or not, pretty specific. The pieces were huge sort of anime meets collage. The artist had talent, however the pieces were too random and some had the base level stuff like Come and get it! with splats of the title word all over it. This is where I turn left...There was an interactive sort of video thing where you got headphones to listen to a woman carry on about an unknown subject. Later she had a sort of a robotic outfit on while she slowly torqued around the room. Door please...; )For me the best part were the chairs on the patio that look and feel like spinning tops. You sit in them and the toss you all around without ejecting you. You can even order your own through the store for $750...Im down. The space in general is very nice with a restaurant I didnt try. The admission is free. Theres a store that is a blast into the days of hippies and related activities. This is hosted by Armand Hammer of baking soda fame. Big bucks and their personal taste on display.
I didnt get to see everything but still it has good art work.
This is an amazing complete gallery to appreciate amazing works. I went to see but when I arrived a band was playing and I stayed at the event, they had drinks and a pretty nice decoration! Definitely going back soon
Great experience! FREE entrance. They have a beautiful permanent collection that includes amazing paintings by Mureau, Vangogh, Rembrandt, etc. Also modern exhibitions with different styles and ways of communicating art, interesting and fun. Recommended.
One of the few free museums in LA City, their collection is quite good and special exhibits are usually well done and exciting. Parking is convenient and with nearby places to eat and drink, a short day trip is Central to other attractions.
Beautiful oasis in Westwood. Great place to just chill and have a few drinks. Happy hour specials during the week.
This had to be our worst trip to a museum in LA!!! Hence the rating. I will not taking my students from summer camp their again even with the apology I received. If you have an exhibition about LA and you bring a group of LA kids who are not made to feel welcome by some of your staff they why advertise that the museum is for everybody!!! A real disappointment!
It was meh... Nothing amazing. I wasent to happy seeing real Santeria stuff in every corner of certain rooms.
Beautiful space, excellent Made in LA 2018 exhibit. Parking is CASH ONLY ($6 for 3 hours with validation).
It is a popular spot for hanging out amongst young people. The arts are decent, but the energetic vibe is just incredible!
The collection is small but I really like the place.
One of the best contemporary art museums in LA since Hammer is part of UCLA with one of the best Art programs in the whole country. Free admission, great selection in the bookstore, not crowded at all (compared to other go to touristic places).
Was on my place to visit list, and I may say what a great overall experience with very amazing art pieces...which comes with free admission :)
We went for the Sarah Lucas exhibit. Sweet of them to bring it. What a treat to see in the states. Something I never thought I would have a chance to see, and it was voluminous in number of articles and also in emotional value for me. Thank you truly.
Beautiful space to view amazing art. Parking is reasonable and the museum itself is free.
A quiet retreat with pleasant staff and delicious food wth just right portions. Fresh salads.
The Hammer has two excellent shows and a pretty good permanent collection. And a nice holiday gift from The Hammer is free admission!!!
If you are an art lover do not miss this fantastic museum. The architecture is beautiful with an inner plaza with bamboo, beautiful lighting and a cafe. The Curatorial staff is wicked clever, the lighting is perfect and there is always something to surprise and delight. The museum is free and has its own parking validated for two hours free so dont let the Westwood address scare your off. In fact, there is absolutely no reason to not visit every time you are in need of going to the area since it is the cheapest most supreme parking in the UCLA area.
Wonderful gallery, great exhibits.I feel like the Hammer is a place that a lot of people miss out on.Its a must see for people who love art and live in or are traveling through LA
This place offers different experience each time you come here. You can spend time with company to share your impression or just spent hours walking here alone and enjoying the art masterpieces on your own. Be careful and dont loose your sense of time, its just too magical place to leave fast.
Some exhibitions here are true gems. Debuffet Drawings in 2017 was truly memorable.
Thur. Evenings- Rebel Rebel-Drinks, Music, and fave Artwork. Have some fun.
Low rating is partly due to taste, I must be honest. I just never seem to make or find meaning in the art here. However, I cant give this place too low a score because everyone that works here is super helpful and committed to making the place a joy to visit. Still, be warned that this place is hella modern art.
Perfect! The admission is free! Only pay for parking!
Excellent musium. No entry fees. Neatly maintained.
The exhibits are nice. The space is open and airy.
They had a very powerful exhibit when I went. Ill never be the same
Under renovations now, but the Hammer is such a gem in Westwood.Theres lots of nice brunch places nearby, not to mention the new cafe that has opened in the courtyard -- very chic.Good selection of modern and contemporary pieces as well as a constantly cycling exhibition of current artists.Well curated and always worth a trip to see whats new!
An artists heaven! Everything you need or never knew you needed, and more! Awesome selection, decent prices. Its the supercenter of art supplies!
Free admission to enjoy priceless pieces of are is what Hammer offers.Modern to the classics are covered. Small groups of collections are scattered across two primary floors of displays. Rembrandt to Marvel are all here for you to enjoy. The classics is a small area while most of the collections are modern. Two hours is plenty of time to see it all. Including the newest piece from UCLA visuals. We will go back again soon. Bring the family and there is a new nice restaurant on the patio floor. Make it a date.
Fun gallery to spend a few hours at, due to the layout of the building you end up walking outdoors to get from room to room which was pretty nice. The courtyard on the first floor have these fun spindle-looking chairs to sit in, some people were just sitting there reading books so it has a multi-purpose feel to the space. Ping pong tables are upstairs if you want a break from looking at artwork, restaurant is on the ground floor.Entrance is free, not sure if there are special exhibits which have an admission fee but we enjoyed our experience with the free stuff. There is a front desk/lobby area where you can check in your bags, we missed that whole area when we arrived so we had no idea until the end when we got scolded for wearing backpacks in the exhibits lol. Since there are multiple entry points for this gallery, its easily missed (maybe post some more signage up?).In terms of the artwork available for viewing, I personally preferred my visits to the Broad and MOCA. However, I really enjoyed walking outdoors between exhibits which made the experience feel more casual and relaxed. Sometimes I think galleries are a bit too serious for their own good, so this was a nice alternative.Standout exhibit here for me was the Max Hooper Schneider installation.
A great collection and venue for some modern art, and being free is also a great incentive
Nice museum. Great place to visit. Check out the chairs in the courtyard. Youll know what I mean.
I do apricots place like here because first it is free addition great staff and great conceptual video art. Thanks hammer museum
I give it a five star, but I dont understand why there has to be art in the sexual stuff. There was this one where there were mannequins or something in different positions, all with an unused cigarettes in their bum hole(sorry to sound explicit). I feel like art is the beauty of making something creative and abstract, different, interesting, not overly sexualized. I dont know, maybe Im being biased or maybe its just personal opinion.
I love the Hammer! My wife and I come back every time they refresh the exhibits. Free admission on top of great exhibits = WONDERFUL!
