Great fun for the family. Very helpful and considerate staff. They will help take pictures for you on your own phone. Try to go when there are few people for the most comfortable experience. We went in the morning on a Tuesday and had free run of the place, which was fantastic.
Seeing The Art of African Blacksmiths exhibit was an awakening for me. It seems theyve been forging steel for longer than the rest of the planet by hand. The designs and attention to detail is striking. Tools, weapons, chastity devices, neck and waist adornments, headgear - its quite humbling.Everything is beautifully displayed and there are videos showing the Blacksmiths meticulously crafting some of whats on display. Educational for all ages.
This is place is an awesome place to go to on a Thursday night with friends, dates, even on your own if you want. Ive gone to this event 2 times now (Ill check in next time to verify that) and all of it has their own unique theme. The first time I went was about time and they had lectures, activities and even the music was related to the theme (every hour they played a new decade like the 50s, 60s, 70s, etc.). The 2nd time I went was about habitat and how different animals rely on each other to survive. All in all an awesome place to go to.
I don’t give it 5 stars only because: I’m not sure it’s worth going out of your way to visit and it is a painfully small museum when one or more exhibit spaces is not open (as two were not when we drove an hour to visit). The permanent exhibit reminds me of a smaller version of the superb Musée du quai Branly in Paris. Now if you’re already on UCLA’s campus, you should visit if for no other reason than it’s free and cultural. Always good to learn without having to pay to do so! Also, a good gift shop that would be excellent for when you need to shop for people that appreciate other cultures.
Fantastic! Wonderful hour and a half visit!
I took my students from our Summer Camp to the Guatemalan Mask exhibition and the African Video exhibition we sketched, drew and painted back at the shop. We went in the week so we were the only students there it was a wonderful trip and now the students have created their own masks and they hang in our shop. A great learning experience. One of my favorites is the Fowler!
Beautiful campus but the museum wasnt very interesting especially for kids. The gift shop in the museum was more fun than the museum itself since they had things that were hand made from all over the world
Wonderful spot in busy Westwood. Nice displays. Interestingly done
Great place to spend some time if youre a art lover. Exhibits rotate and they also have something interesting on display.
My favorite part of the night was the earthquake exhibit. I am just fascinated by earthquakes. I was going to become a seismologist but I was never good at science. Or math.
This museum is a little-known treasure for anyone interested in anthropology. Significant improvements have been made in the last few years. Admission is free, but parking is expensive. A good option would be to take a Metro bus and walk into the campus.
I like history so this place is nice! They have rotating exhibits so they keep it fresh. They also use multimedia within the museum so theres videos, pictures, and interactive displays. Admission is free but they are closed on certain days of the week so check beforehand
Incredible exhibits, all the time. Too bad it is so far off the beaten path. I wish I could take the train or bus to the door, but thats not feasible.
Excellent museum. Their dinosaur exhibit is really extensive and diverse. If you like birds, they have a really retro, old school exhibit, filled with hundreds of taxidermic birds. Make sure to go to the bottom floor for the kids section. It was really cool and had live animals and insects to check out. CA teachers get in free with a pay stub or staff ID.
I had never been here before..in fact I had only went in to use the restroom bc I was working an event outside. But I am happy that I did! Wow the learning experience was truly awesome!!!
Tucked away in the midst of UCLA campus, its a little gem in Los Angeles. Admission is free and opens at noon. Informative docents and guides are readily available and the walk-through is very pleasant. Paid parking can be a tough challenge but its not too far from the museum. Plan ahead and enjoy!
Very rich collections, free. I loved it.
Wonderful base collections and amazing special exhibits. Park in lot 4 and exit the north east stairwell. It is due north from there, no need to go up the famous steps.I went there for the exhibit on African ironwork. Truly amazing material covering its use in the different aspects of life and from many regions. From daily household items, farming equipment, and weapons.
Free and open to the public. The exhibits were thought provoking and each one has enough room to breathe.
An absolute pleasure for a short visit. Free (except for parking), well maintained and nice family friendly museum. Insider tip: We go on sundays when they usually have arts and crafts for younger kids.
Beautiful collection to wander and dream in. We went with our tribe of ages 8 to 85 and everyone had a great time.
Interesting anthropology and history museum located inside UCLA. Not crowded. Free admission.
Its a small and very well curated museum in the center of UCLA, with better exhibitions than suggested by its unassuming looks.
A wonderful way to spend a few hours on a Sunday afternoon
This museum is a little gem tucked away in the central part of UCLAs campus. It is dedicated to non-European cultural artifacts, fine arts and history. Both a research museum and open to the public, there are always featured exhibitions. The few times Ive been there, Ive always found some interesting pieces and have been gifted a wealth of new information about various African, Asiatic, and indigenous American cultures. Its a pretty small museum and isnt that accessible or known to the public unfortunately but I recommend going to visit, particularly on a day where parking is not a pain.
Good on-campus museum with small private selection. The place is tiny, so variety is lacking and most of the art is not particularly interesting or historically significant. Still, entrance is free and the place is well-curated. Its worth a visit but I wouldnt go out of my way to check this place out. There are much better museums to visit, but its worth coming here if you happen to find yourself on the UCLA campus one day.
Exhibits are very rich in information through the lens of cultural anthropology. You will also see objects that are not easy to find in other museums. However, this place does need more space to house some permanent exhibitions of its impressive collections, although the constantly changing temporary exhibitions may be seen as its feature.
Its a free museum in the heart of uclas north campus, and its beautifully maintained. From the outside it looks small but its actually pretty big inside
Fantastic art show of masks from around the world!
The Fowler had interesting permanent and special exhibits.. Its one of my favorite museums because it focuses on ethnic artwork.
Wonderful museum.. Small, yet spacious. Amazing collections! You can easily spend an hour or two roaming this place! Would definitely come again.
Beautiful museum with amazing non-western art. And its free!
This is a great little museum within the gorgeous UCLA campus. Best part is that its free.
Nice little gem tucked away on the UCLA campus. Definite must for fans of cultural anthropology.
Fabulous place to spend a whole day at.
Fantastic video installations and lovely gift shop
Inexpensive and large with lots of opportunity to step back outside and chill if youre getting tired of looking at rectangles on walls for hours. Some nice German Expressionist and symbolist holdings I wasnt expecting.
Beautiful place to spend a day at.
Great museum, fantastic collection of artwork and artifacts from across the world.
Great exhibits
This place is inside the UCLA campus.I was there for a short film festival about dance, there were a few good ones, others were funny, then had some food and drinks at the central courtyard, couldnt see the museum as this was after hours.Plenty of parking but directions to and from are confusing.
Took a midterm here and used the ladies restroom
Very cool and interesting exhibits in an intimate environment.
Really good art and there are events going on almost every week
Very good free exhibition of various topics.
Im being held in the basement until my superiors decide where to send me. Good AC.
A consistently excellent small museum. Shows are thoughtfully executed and creatively installed.
Great exhibits and the members only receptions are always first class affairs.
This is probably one of the biggest museums in Los Angeles with a cultural backgound focus. The museum hosts a wide variety of cultural events including samba and Brazilian dance, a few music concerts, and even a few poetry slams. The museum is free and it is a great place for an afternoon trip to spend a couple hours seeing other cultures- Asian, African, and Latin Americans art in action.
The museum is consistently fascinating, their events for kids really fun, relaxing and enriching, and their little store is the perfect place to find really cool, pretty, unique gifts for many different types of people. Love it!
Pretty wonderful little quiet spot in the middle of UCLA.
Good
As a student, I never visited The Fowler, I didn’t even know its full function. I took it for granted like I am assuming many students, employees and campus visitors are doing this very second. The Fowler, first and foremost, is completely free. They do have a donation box for support, but you can certainly come in to explore any exhibit. The exhibits are always changing! A diverse collection of sculptures, painting, and other art pieces are the allure of the Fowler. The museum provides an exchange of cultures you may not be able to find at other museums. In my visit I was able to explore the Nkame exhibit featuring the Cuban printmaker Belkis Ayón whose work displayed Afro-Cuban myths and visual iconography. It was truly unique in that all her work was presented with subtle tones; white, black and grey. One of my favorite exhibits was the Intersections: World Arts, Local Lives. The multi-cultural objects were so detailed and exquisite that you couldn’t help but to admire its beauty. It was a treat in trying to guess where certain object where from, what country, what time period.Overall great place for exposure to different cultures and diverse forms of artistry.
You can easily spend an hour here enjoying the collection or one of the evening events they have.
Wonderful place to pass time and learn
The Fowler is tiny but wonderful! Intersections is one of my all-time favorite exhibits.
Hidden jewel! Awesome museum
Great place for cultural diversity.
Nice for events if you rent the roof
I only saw one exhibit here, but it was interesting.
