What a gorgeous spot! Can get crowded in one spot by the water, but if you look closely you can find a few other spots that will give you plenty of space to enjoy the beautiful water and views. There is not a ton of shade so the trails themselves are very hot in the current weather. Two parking areas and you must park in designated stalls. They will and do ticket cars parked along edge of grass in lots. They will also ticket if you park in any resident permit area.
Wonderful trail, plenty of spaces for kids to run around.Glad we came earlier in the morning as the parking is limited (good number of parking spots but still filled up at around 1130am).Everyone seems to be following the 6 ft distance.Would recommend for family with/without kids.Family with kids - not all areas.. make sure being hat or something to cover them.. can get hot pretty fast.Hint: may want to bring extra set of towel and dry clothes for kids that loves water and accidently sits in the lake...
Beautiful get away situated in Fort Sheridan. The drive towards it is interesting through historic district - beautiful houses.it is perfect for a small picnic or good for just walking. We also saw some people watching birds, so it might be famous for that, but I am not aware. Has a small beach too.
Preserve is pretty with lots of nice trails but we have usually only come to see the lake and enjoy the beachfront. Its a small but nice open beach. Mostly rocky but some sandy spots if you go early you might grab one. Break walls help to soften although not totally eliminate the waves and can be a bit treacherous if you swim too close so be careful with newer but overconfident swimmers. As the water levels have risen recently the beach is more worn away or missing. Keep in mind this is a public free beach so it isnt all pretty and racked and everything like a paid beach. Still worthy of a trip on a hot summer day or a fall walk to see the lake and toss some skipping stones. Parking lot is located a short albeit steep walk down to the beach. Without much pavement beyond the beachfront dont bother with a stroller or wagon unless its got those larger sand friendly wheels.
Its small private beach cannot accommodate large crowds. Also there is no life guards in the beach not allowed to swim. Parking is challenging with limited spots to park.We went with friends families. Kids really enjoyed playing in the sand, its a nice place to spend some time with family and friends.
Great family (and stroller) friendly trails, both hard surface and natural grass. Dogs are welcome on a leash and if they are picked up after.. My family had a great time and were able to see a variety of wildlife. Public restrooms are on the property but may not yet be available due to the pandemic.
Beautiful. Clean. Bathroom, forest preserve to walk dogs. No dogs in cemetery. Resting grounds for our veterans and family.
It’s such a wonderful place to visit. There is a grass hiking trail of 1.7 miles with lots of wildflowers and it’s famous for bird watching. Beautiful views of Lake Michigan.
This place has beautiful landscape. There is a short hiking loop. Most importantly there is a lookout over Lake Michigan that cannot be beat! Going here at sunset was a great choice. The trail is high traffic.
Great place to take walk and get a little history with a full view of Lake Michigan.
Great trails to walk. Beautiful. Had it been hilly with streams and waterfalls i would have given the fifth star.
Beautiful walk of the old Fort Sheridan grounds. Your able to walk down to Lake Michigan, you can visit the Red Hawk sculpture and bird watch on the natural paths. Great Vista views of Lake Michigan.
Amazing, go early not much parking available.
Trail walks, beautiful view on lake but small parking.
Deep blue and green and sounds like singing insects...
Very quiet place. Nice to watch nature in their own beauty, but beach is pretty small and covered mostly with big stones.
Took my son here on Veterans Day. Very nice way to reflect on the lives of law abiding people who serve this country.
The preserve has been redone extremely well. The lake, trails, ravines, and the wild flowers on the former runway are absolutely amazing. It is located near Fort Sheridan and its water tower. Whether one is looking for a beach or a hike, this is a great stop. Dont forget Openlands Preserve as well, the views are amazing!
Such a great little place. The views of Lake Michigan are exceptional at sunset. Lots of great history. The local neighborhood homes are converted from old military officer housing.
This place is so peaceful and beautiful. I like going there on the beach and just enjoy the sound of the waves.
Enjoyed the 2 mi yellow bird watching loop, saw several deer as well, lake views are amazing!
Very nice place to walk around. Cool to have access to a beach. Only hit a few trails. Well have to come back.
A beautiful expanse of area with wide paths to wander on. The lake is also beautiful but as its winter time now, the winds from are lake is cold. The informational boards share history and also warn you as to why you shouldnt be swimming in the lake this close to the fort.
This is a great place for a walk or bike ride. The trails and parking lot are well maintained. The varying views of Lake Michigan make this one of my favorite local destinations. One can see the lake from the adjacent bluffs and ravines, across the prairie and all the way down to the shore. The old Fort Sheridan Tower, soldiers housing, and other relics add to the interest.
It is a great place to go for walking. The trails are very beautiful and peaceful.
I loved the preserve, but was sad to hear that they spray with toxic chemicals to prevent overgrowth of the prairie plants/ flowers. I was told it is to prevent overgrowth, but I didnt understand why they couldnt just cut down the overgrowth or use chemicals that are not toxic. When you spray them, these toxic chemicals get in the soil and in the air. This certainly can effect animals, dogs, children and their families. Isnt there any products you can use that are not toxic if you must spray? This is such a wonderful forest preserve please keep it safe for all sentinent beings!
The best place for family
Fort Sheridan offers a quiet trails and scenic views of Lake Michigan. It is accessible via the bike trail and has its own parking lot. Further, Fort Sheridan has historical relevance for the U.S. Army and features old military buildings. If you live anywhere from Lake Bluff in the North to Highland Park in the South, Fort Sheridan is a must see.
Beautiful lakefront preserve with a semi private feel to it
Absolutely beautiful. Despite what might be listed above, this preserve is open seven days a week from 6:30 a.m. to sunset.
Nice place to visit. Looks cool. And is on the beach
Beautiful. Wish they would finish the construction so I could use the bird walk path, but soon- they say summer 2019. Views of the lake aren’t as beautiful as at the Openlands park, but great wooded path and prairie. Bathrooms, but no running water or drinking fountains so bring water for you and your dogs!
Beautiful grass and paved trails overlooking Lake Michigan.
Love to go here to hike and see the fall colors.
Open for public. Not like beaches in Highland park. Today Monday, I see many people swimming here with families. Beautiful place for hiking.
Loved it! Great place to getaway from the city for a day.
Beautiful place to watch Michigan lake. Worth visiting with family and friends
Its beautiful. We went off the path though down a bluff to the beach. Probably werent supposed to lol
Beautiful. A combination of prairie, ravine, lakefront, & history.
This was a beautiful amazing place. We enjoyed this beautiful location. The locals were very friendly and helpful. This place is clean and peaceful. My son graduated bootcamp and we both wanted to visit this location before I returned to California. Im really glad we did.
Beautiful place, throughly enjoyed for jog and walk.
Beautiful place, but needs more parking. Street parking is not allowed on weekends.
Beautiful preserve with a quaint beach and great trails.
Great in all ways except lack of shade or shelter during sun or rain.
Fort Sheridan has an amazing historical vibe with activities such as going to the beach, walking in nature, along with exploring and learning along the way
Place Full Of History And Veterans Retirement LocationThere Is Also A Teacher Here Who Is A Pain
Beautiful location. You can walk down to Lake Michigan.
Free parking. Beautiful shoreline hike and views. Part of the shore is obstructed by sets of small boulders; those are fun to crawl over
God bless America
Beautiful walking trail, scenic and quiet spots, grand view of the lake.
Love walking on the rocky shores!
A must see absolutely beautiful!
Lots of greenery, open fields, and open sky. Great place for a picnic.
This is very beautiful place. Here you can walk and look at historic houses
Gorgeous!! Many paths, some gravel paths and some grass paths. Perfect place to take a stroll along the shore line or look out over the lake at the look out
Fantastic park on grounds of old decommissioned army fort, big parking lot and pretty short walk to overlook of Lake Michigan. Several adjoining long trails also. Great for bicycling and walking.
Beautiful area, great for a nice slow walk
Great place to walk the trails, realx, and enjoy Lake Michigan.
Nice spot to take break from biking. Its right off the bike path.
Beautiful Pathways and Waterfront Views
Good place to go to enjoy nature a little bit
Great place for a walk and then a quick dip of your feet into the lake
Always beautiful
Beautiful place, nice trials but no swimming or wading.
Very nice place for a walk or a bicycle ride!
My colleague suggested to go there. This is a very beautiful place to see many wild plants.
Nice beach with public access. Also dog friendly. Only drawback is that it is a rocky beach not a sandy beach. Great for walking but not laying out and tanning.
Nice area for a walk for beach but very limited parking
A beautiful trail and delightful overlook
Nice trails with beautiful views of the lake.
Great park with long walking paths and a small beach.
