Such an iconic place, synonymous with Key West itself almost! We went here to see what it was all about! Took a guided tour of the house. Quite a bit of interesting memorabilia inside with some authentic furniture. It gives you a glimpse into the life of the author, but honestly worth coming to see the house and grounds separate and apart from who lived here! The tile in the house was very unique, and it is, in every sense of the word, a quintessential Key West home.....down to the wrap around porch and shuttered windows. I liked Hemingways writing area which was in the second floor of the detached building out back. Interesting to picture him sitting there in his chair typing away....and it really does look as though he just stepped away for a moment. Each piece of furniture and artifact carefully maintained in its place. If you love cats, then this is a definite must see, as theyre are cats literally in every nook and cranny. Some are nice, but some are mean. Be cautious till you figure out which is which. There is a lovely little gift and book shop by the pool with an array of things to purchase. Plan on spending 11/2 -2 hrs here. That gives you plenty of time to tour the house and grounds, look at the memorabilia, visit the bookshop, take pictures and pet the kitties!!

This is a typical beach house museum, but with cats. The grounds are very well maintained, and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. They charge for entry, but the tours are included. The cats are friendly, and you can pet/hold them if they want. The house seems to be left as is, and has lots of cool decorations from when it was lived in. Its worth visiting if youre familiar with the author.Would go again.

I didnt realize Hemmingway was such a player Lol. The cats...they had 60 on site while we were there. So many sweet, beautiful creatures. The grounds/landscaping is a true treasure. If walls could speak - what secrets would they tell us about Ernest Hemingway? The house is a walk in time. Eclectic design takes you back in time to this mid-century wonder. As a fan, I found myself intrigued by the trinkets and old comics that were still visible on the walls. Take your allergy meds if youre allergic to felines because baby, theres kitties every where. The house is beautiful and whimsical. Theres an Ernest Hemingway library in the back of the house through the garden, where your able to view and purchase Hemingways collection with official seals. TIP - THIS VENUE IS CASH ONLY.

A must for historians and cat lovers alike. Preserved in all its glory, the Hemingway house is a great place to visit while in Key West. We especially loved the polydactyl felines roaming the museum. Its $16 an adult to enter and well worth it. Our guide Joanna was thorough and did excellent in explaining every detail even with her mandatory face covering. Its a dreamy, romantic place and we loved every second of our time there.

Definitely made for interesting and very informative day. The house and artifacts were well preserved and in good condition. We went while it was raining in hopes to be less crowded but I guess everyone else had the same idea so I felt like I was rushed through exhibits to keep a safe distance from others. I appreciate that they had a digital pamphlet to download with additional information. Face masks are required and they seem to do a decent job enforcing that but its hard when other tourists dont take the regulations seriously. Please be mindful of others. I think if we visit again we will definitely tag along for the official tour!

Very interesting tour. Once you pay to get in you can walk around with the pamphlet on your own and see the rooms and/or wait for the guide to give a tour. We did both, different info given. Be aware there are cats everywhere. They’re pretty lethargic after lunch and didn’t influence anything, unless you count the gift shop. Hard to look around when you’re smelling cat urine pervasively.

Although all tours are currently self guided due to the pandemic, we found the Hemingway House to be a good spot for lovers of history, literature, and felines. For real: there are 59 cats on property and they are definitely a focal point of the experience. The house is air-conditioned making it a great escape from the island heat. The second-story wraparound porch has unparalleled views of the Key West Lighthouse. Please note, elements of the home’s exterior and interior require walking up and down stairs ️

The Hemingway House visit was surprisingly one of the highlights of our visit to Key West. I am not very big on American authors overall and felt going in that this was going to be a forgettable experience after a brief history lesson on Hemingway and the house location. But I was completely surprised by how enjoyable the entire visit was and can not recommend it enough. The house is beautiful and I did find it very interesting the small facts that were given to us about each room and Hemingway. My favorite spots was his bedroom balcony and bedroom bathroom, the tulip dining room ceiling light, his writing room, and his pool. I love that after the tour we were able to freely walk around the property which we spent doing as long as the actual house tour was. There is beautiful scenery and plenty to look at in every single corner. The cats are very famously roaming the grounds which we loved, too! They were all very friendly and one even followed us around and sat by us every time we would stop walking.Even if you are not a history person or into authors or reading/writing, the tour is extremely enjoyable. Take advantage of walking around at the end of your tour and grabbing some amazing photo opportunities with the beautiful property.

This tour was an interesting. Visiting the place where an iconic American novelist lived and wrote many of his classic works was fascinating. It a relativity large, beautiful compound with a couple of buildings, large pool and lots of cats. Some cool things about these cats, for one they have a poly-dactyl gene, which causes many of them to have six-toes but all have the poly-dactyl gene and may also be called mitten cats. Due to the size of Key West, its not unlikely that many of these cats may be related, to Hemingways first cat; a six-toed kitten named Snow White, which was given to him by sea Captain Stanley in 1930). Hemingway also had a quirk in naming the cats after famous people or characters. It was seeing his office over the garage (left as it was) where he created his masterpieces in solitude, that with imagination you can see him working, in your mind. We then enjoyed walking the grounds to complete this our tour. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Buildings and grounds were clean, organized and maintained. You should stop and visit if you can and enjoy. We did.

I left here wanting to read more of Hemingways work, and watching films based upon his novels.Plus, the house is known to have all of cats that are descendents of the original cat that lived here with Hemingway. Thoroughly enjoyed the Hemingway House. The tour was informative but didnt feel like a lecture at all. If you like to read everything (like me), you could easily spend a whole afternoon there. For those who are more rushed, its definitely doable in a pretty brief amount of time if you just stick to the tour and then move on.There were cats everywhere, many of them polydactyl. The lineage dates back to one of Hemingways cats, of course. My favorite part was being able to see his writing studio and just strolling around the grounds. It was very peaceful. And yes, theres a bookshop/gift shop.Bonus: the house has air conditioning, so youre not just standing in sweltering heat and humidity while taking your Florida curiosity venture here.

If you in any way appreciate writing, history, journalism, art, antique furniture, and especially cats then youll very much enjoy the tour. I found it to be a downright bargain. My only gripe is that their penny squashing machine was busted. There were three options for squashed pennies and Id have gladly bought at least one of each, but, alas, I could not.A guided tour is also included with admission, and the guides make most of their pay from tips so I made sure to show some appreciation for our guides time. The tour was a wealth of information and took you through the Hemingway House room by room and gave information on the decor, furnishings, how the rooms were used and/or who lived in them over the years, and about the various photos and pictures on the walls. You can pet as many cats as you want! I found one particular long-haired, orangey fellow with beautiful amber eyes who was hanging around the bookstore, soliciting head scratches. We also found a little wrought iron table with two chairs sitting in a patch of shade with a beautiful older tabby girl sprawled out atop it. She snoozeled while we petted her and prominently displayed her extra toes and toe beans. The house had lots of old typewriters, photos, stories, and a myriad of things to look at. I highly recommend it.

He spoke mostly in monotone and while he gave us a few interesting facts I think he could have expanded on items of more general interest. The tour was quick, at about 30 minutes. That was partially dues to the high number of visitors. There are around 40-60 cats on the property all purported to be descendents from his cat in the 30’s. Many of them have 6 toes on front paws.
