The trails are beautiful and it’s a great place to hammock and relax. The lake is beautiful and there are lots of friendly people with dogs. The bike trails are super cool but can be hard to follow. Great place for formal photos when the weather is nice. The only downsides are it tends to smell like weed in certain areas, and the parking lot is really small so when it’s busy you have to park on the side of the road, and the trails are poorly marked.

This place isnt what it used to be... It is still a beautiful spot but its become too accessible. You used to be able to walk for a long time without seeing other people (my personal prerequisite for enjoying nature). Now there are paved trails and parking lots, kids screaming, bikes passing every few minutes. Avoid this place on the weekends for sure! It is sad, but they are turning it into the portage trails.

Beautiful all year round, especially as all the ice melts and the sun finally shines after this dreary and cold winter. All levels of hiking ability, a great look out, and enough trails to be here all day long. Its perfect.

Beautiful preserve. I will absolutely come again. There are more trails than are posted on the map, so it’s easy to lose your way if you’re not paying attention. The parking lot is also rather small for how many people come to visit when the weather is nice. A lot of cars had to park on the road.

Al Sabo is a semi natural oasis only minutes away from Kalamazoo that allows one to experience a wide variety of flora and fauna. Planted coniferous and natural deciduous forested areas provide a shady canopy and the mixture of open flat land, rolling hills, and marshy areas offer the opportunity for a pleasant hike. Trail signage can be a little vague or absent altogether, but the preserve is not so big that getting turned around is a big deal. Watch out for dog poop, particularly on the trails near the parking area, and also for the occasional territorial mountain biker that acts as if the trail is their own. However, most of the bikers Ive encountered are polite and accommodating and will give audible notice to allow hikers ample time to step off trail. I recommend printing off the trail map and bringing a compass on your first few visits to the preserve.

Took my mountain bike here for the first time and was impressed. The trails are marked decently well, its still easy to get lost but theres a road nearby. This is a good trail for beginners with like 2 technical sections. Nothing too rough, and there is some narrow pathways. Ill definitely be coming back to improve my skills and hopefully get faster each time. I do recommend doing this trail a few hours after it rains because there is a lot of loose sand.Along with that, theres a paved trail as well as plenty of hiking trails. Theres something at this park for everyone!

Very nice place with a good variety of trails and sights. They have a paced trail, as well as a lot of drit trails that go into the forest. There tends to be a lot of smokers on the trail, however, which can definitely ruin the experience. Parking can also be an issue, since there isnt a lot.

What a fabulous place to go for a walk, ride bikes or run. There are so many different paths that you always feel as if you are in a different park every single time. Today I found a bag on my path so I picked it up and decided to pick up any garbage I found. I found 2 big McDonalds cups, a plastic container of fruits (empty) 4 bottles of water one was still full, a sock, and a cigarette pack (box) whatever its called, candy wrapper, and even a poop bag with the poop in it. You dog lovers are disgusting; many of them dont even pick up their poop. Today I also encountered a man with 2 large dogs not on a leash. I am allergic to dog dandruff and dont like big dogs as I was bitten once; besides, you must leash your dogs people follow the rules.

Great for a basic hike, dog walk, trail run, easy mountain bike, or just enjoying a little nature. Trails are well marked so you know if you’re on a bike route or on one of the many trails where bikes are not allowed. The north side (across the land bridge) of the preserve is one of the better spots to explore as it’s much less traveled, and no mountain bikes allowed. The parking lot is often at capacity from spring through fall during peak hours, so you may have to park on the road or about 1/4 mile down at Texas Dr. park.

The parking lot was full and people were parked on the street. We were about to do the same when we noticed the other cars parked on the street had gotten tickets. In the full parking lot were people with unleashed dogs running amok. Might be a nice place to go but not this time of year- (June 2) waaay too busy. Seemed more like a people walk than a nature walk.

Full of nature and wildlife. If you want to get away from the busy world, this would be a must-go-to place. The walking trails are nice, and this land reserve also allows mountain biking. As a matter of fact, I biked part of the Mohab Trail and part of the Lookout Trail a little bit ago, and the trails were wide enough to easily fit a two bikers side by side. Also, this reserve is a good spot to take your dogs. If you have the time, I would highly recommend visiting Al Sabo.

Great place for walkers, hikers and dog walkers. There are so many trails in this preserve. Quiet beautiful scenic spots! Place was kept clean ! Parking lot needs to be developed further. There are quiet few spots for picknicking and for kids to play, climb ! There’s a small cute pond but isn’t good for swimming. Great for summers and would definitely rock in fall. Would definitely recommend to the nature lovers who are into hiking and nature! Not great for picnicking as this preserve isn’t open for any such. Please use bug sprays before visiting as there are quiet dirty water areas where there are lots of mosquitoes and bugs .

Seems like not enough people know about the overflow parking across the street at Texas drive park. Signage would help. Theres a few hundred spots for overflow, yet last time I was at Al Sabo the parking was full and there were actually 50 cars lining the street while 100 feet away across the street is an empty parking lot.Dogs should be leashed here.Im very thankful for the use of this preserve. But I think theyve overgrown their usage plan and it would be nice to see them develop the incredible potential here.

Some very nice trails, nice pines, a little elevation. Pretty place to hike. Unfortunately, trails are very poorly marked. Occasional maps show trails with numbered intersections. Sadly, theres not a number or a you are here to be found at the intersections. It doesnt help that the Lookout trail seems to be everywhere. Your best bet is go often enough that youll figure it out and thus become one of the helpful people who tried to explain the trails to first-timers.

Beautiful Trails - very fortunate to have a resource like this so close to our city. There are miles of trails - be sure to study the map at the entrance before heading in. If you stay on the main, marked trails youre good but be sure that you are comfortable where you are if heading off on one of the many side trails. The good news is that you cant get lost for long, and there are plenty of friendly people to help you out if you do. Enjoy!

Mi
Review №88

Great local land preserve to fulfill your nature needs. Tons of established trails, boardwalks through the marsh area, and a couple overlooks. Hopefully they will not add anymore paved trails through the area as it detracts from the whole philosophy behind preservation of a natural space. This area always has been extremely accessible to most people. I am glad that more people are using the area versus ten years ago, and the area with the trail is small and doesnt effect most of the area available.
