First time visiting Fort Harrison State Park for me. I never realized what a beautiful park this is right here so close to Downtown Indianapolis. Took a hike along the creek and was surprised by the fact there were actually some small hills right here in central Indiana. The trails were well maintained and clearly marked. Got to watch some people fishing while walking around the pond and out on the pier. Definitely a place to visit and will probably be full of color for the fall. Just remember there is an admission fee.
Beautiful park to visit in the fall. My family and I had a great time hiking the Fall Creek trail and the kids love the large playground area. There are multiple locations for picnicking, either at the many provided tables, or with a blanket on the grass. If you live in Indy or are visiting, I would highly recommend this park!
This is a beautiful state park. It is also a very busy place. Lots of people getting their Saturday morning stroll on. There is lots to see and places to just chill. There is a huge hill if you like to sled in the winter. We lime to stay at the inn. It is quiet and the staff are friendly.
I was pretty impressed when I decided to find a place to break in my mountain bike. I did very little research on the trails available.I biked to a trail that was a bike/hike trail that I didnt notice was one way...until I was respectfully informed by a rider going the opposite direction.I had no idea Indianapolis had such trails and Im from here! I had lots of fun pushing the limits of my bike and abilities. I think you will too.
We visited for a short walk on the Tree Line trail, which is an easy walk. This was a lovely walk with a beautiful variety of wooded and prairie views. Trees are marked along the trail with markers that provide information about the trees. We saw a lot of butterflies and birds during our one hour walk. You could walk the trail quicker, but we stopped to read the markers and take pictures. We will definitely be back to check out the 20th Century War museum, which is near the visitor center. Be sure to visit the Visitor Center and see the displays of military, Native American life, and wildlife. It also has a counter to purchase T-shirts or hats. We look forward to return and walk more trails!
Whats not to like? Beautiful park. Well maintained in all the common areas. Has a historic feel. Mountain bike trails to choose from.
We lived near Ft Harrison for a little over a year and it was our favorite place to get outdoors. Absolutely lovely open grassy areas with shade trees, plenty of picnic areas, shelters & grills, a couple playground areas, some trails, a creek that is great for wading in at least a couple different spots, fishing pond, horses available for trail riding, paved walking/bike trail, sledding hill, historical buildings, restrooms.... and the staff do an outstanding job of keeping the grounds beautiful. No trash cans (as at most IN state parks), so be advised you will need to carry out your trash. All in all one of the very best things about living in Indianapolis (one of the others is the fabulous downtown original farmers market;)).
Beautiful park. We rented a shelter & it was absolutely perfect! The bathrooms were clean. The playground only consisted of 2 swings & nothing else but not a big deal, the kids enjoyed exploring & running around.
Such a lovely surprise! A well maintained, enjoyable little gem in Indianapolis! Trails were well marked, offered a varied terrain, and not overly busy. The picnic areas, playgrounds, and facilities were plentiful. I can’t wait to return!!
Its amazing they managed to fit several forested, multi-mile trails in such a small space. The park is beautiful, and while it can be crowded at times, that is only because its so hard to find a gem like this close to an urban center. The only knock I have is that trash cans can be hard to come by, so please pack out your trash.
Nice long multi mile walking and biking paths. Locals brought floats for little ones to swim and float in nice shallow wide river flowing through. Popular but huge so it didnt feel crowded. Good for picnics and fishing. There was a small entrance fee per car to enter park.
Nice state park located near Indianapolis. Several medium length hikes that are not extremely strenuous, a good place to go when you dont have all day to get outside.
Great Park and fun mountain bike trails! Easy to get to if you live in Indy and even if you dont live in Indy.
The Fort has great amenities and makes great use of the natural features of the area. It can be busy on weekends but that is a testament to the attractions it offers and its proximity to Indy. I recommend a visit!
Great open space park with plenty of trails that run all over including near fall creek. Even a little spot for kids to play and stuff always going on there.
Such fun to visit where my husband used to serve in the Army. Now a park with museum, beautiful vistas (especially fall leaf colors). Enjoy the hiking trails!
Fun family oriented park. Great weather today brought a lot of folks out. Nice park for a day trip
Very busy on the day i went. It took 30 min to get into the pay gate which usually there may be one or two cars. But this was a very nice day and with so many things closed or limited with covid restictions it made sense, just surprised.Nicely kept park, love coming here with my friends each fall, guess everyone else did too.
This is an amazing park in the middle of the big city. You forget where you are. And the turning of the leaves is going to be spectacular.
Love this park in all seasons. In the summer, the creek is super crowded, but the wildflowers at the black walnut Grove are peaceful and beautiful. Paths are well-maintained, and there are some really excellent hiking and biking paths. Love taking the dog here!
Awesome park. Love the museum. Went to the nature center spoke naturalist D.A. he was very helpful and knowledgeable. He took the time to give my family a private tour of the center and answered all our questions about the wildlife. It was an awesome experience.
Its a wonderful state park right in the middle of the city! Offers wonderful trails, park for the kids and much more...Especially worthwhile to see fall colors here!!
Fort Ben is a nice state park.. its very popular so if you like being around lots of people then this park is for you.
This place is absolutely beautiful. Plenty of places to walk, bike, fish, play, and take photo opts. We went to have a pick nick. We found a few playgrounds to choose from. We also found dozens tables both in the shade and sun, as well as shelters with BBQs. All in all I think it was a fun afternoon. I would plan to spend the day though. Im not use to paying to enter parks in your city. It was one of the few free things you could do. I guess around here you are going to pay no matter what you do. At least with this park.
Beautiful park filled with great hiking and biking trails, and its big enough that it doesnt ever feel crowded.
This place is wonderful, it provides the opportunity to get back to nature and decompress, in our high tech society this place is a sanctuary full of beauty and peace
Beautiful, quiet escape from the city and so close. Go now during the fall season - the foliage is beautiful!
Nice paved trails, lake for fishing. Areas for picnics and barbeque. Non paved trails as well.
Great hiking trails ranging from easy to moderate. $7/car to enter for the day. The restrooms are open and fairly clean. The have picnic tables throughout the part along with charcoal grills. The only thing that was missing were trash cans. We hiked for 5 hours and never saw one trash can.
Really good park and its reasonably priced. The only thing that I didnt like was the trails could be a little bit more clearly marked. Its hard to get completely lost but its not difficult to get turned around a short hike can turn into a long one.
First time Ive been. Truly a hidden gem! Clearly marked trails for walking and biking. Many people out enjoying the Park today.
Excellent play structure, reminds my girls of a castle which they love. The spray grounds in the summer time are a nice addition. Usually busy. Parking lot available. I wish there were a few more benches and shady areas. Other wise it is a nice park.
Worth every penny. I love being able to take a hour or two to get out of my busy schedule to spend some time in nature. This is truly one of my favorite park. There’s a lot of do here. I jog and bike here regularly. I love the ponds and the creek. Gotta check out the Walnut Gove!
A nice place to go and take your love ones where people can be themselves and respect others for who they are, picnics, playgrounds, walking trails, family fun, etc. I love it .Check it out at least one time.
Great place to walk, a lot of trash everywhere though. Next time, Ill bring a trash bag and pick it up myself. Other than that, a wonderful place.
Great park! We have an annual pass and visit regularly. Amazing outdoor playspace that surpasses any others due to the natural setting. Hiking trails, horses, and much more going on at this park. Plenty of picnic tables and parking spaces. Mostly ADA accessible. Some of the play equipment does not have Ramps and I havent seen full harness swings for kiddos with special needs (so far...Ill update if do). Overall great park!
Such a gem! Having a state park in the middle of the city is a wonderful amenity!
The park is quite lovely with all the vibrant colors of fall. Had a wonderful time!!!
Nice, clean well kept park with a couple of scenic walking trails..
Very fun time riding horses. Beautiful day to do it also.
Had a great time social distancing at Fort Harrison State Park. We took a picnic and had lunch and played on the playground and took a beautiful walk.
Highly recommend visiting the nature center/Park office. Naturist David is kind friendly and very knowledgeable on any questions you could ask. The museum is also incredible and I loved the lake.
Nice trails. Great location. Scheduled horseback rides for a fee. Bbq and fire pits available. Duck pond.
Definitely a beautiful place to hike and have a walk!
Played the golf course. Fabulous piece of real estate. The park setting is rolling and wooded along Fall Creek.
Enjoyed the walking trails and paved loop. The paved loop has a lane for pedestrians and a lane for cyclists, but its hard to tell which is which because the markings are very faded. The main lake is small but scenic with fishing possible and there are lots of places to wade in the creek.
Nice spot for a walk or picnic. There are bathrooms, covered shelter, and fishing pond. Clean and very pretty spot! Surrounded by a golf course so it’s pretty quiet out there.
Great state park. Easy very easy to walk.
Golf course was in great shape and an excellent layout. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
Great place for a little hiking with the family. Not technical at all. I had a 5 year old with me and she did just fine
The course is fantastic, I didnt like being made to play with 2 other golfers I didnt know, especially during this Virus. It shouldnt be manatory.
Awesome! Hotel is a little dated but prime location.
Seen some deers and caught a couple fish. Awesome Day
Hiking is good for people with limited exercise on the daily. Clean areas and restroom. Good place to ride a bike or have lunch.
Perfect MTB trails or hiking. Lots of space to spend time with your family and friends.
Nice museum and exhibits, nice picnic areas!
Great state park within the Indianapolis city limits. It is dog friendly. The one little downside is because of location it is a little crowded. But it s a great place for a hike.
Usually pretty busy. beautiful park though. only one entrance and exit for cars
Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park and hotel is outstanding. The staff is attentive and the grounds are well maintained. The rooms are spacious and clean. Conveniently located. I would stay here again.
Awesome, so peaceful and you can see wildlife around
A great place to unwind unless somebody breaks regulations and rides a mini bike without parental supervision on trails meant for people or people on non motorized bicycles. The really dont enforce the rules that are meant for all. One off, but notable. If this continues to beuninformed, it will provide nothing for nobodyThe heck with relaxation??
Beautiful scenery and lots of room to hike. I would like to go here again and run some miles
First time going there very nice and clean. I enjoyed my time there.
I was very surprised how big this park was during my first ever visit in 2020. It is worth getting a $50 park yearly pass if you can afford it. They have a State Park Inn here at this location with restaurant inside.
Good playgrounds for little ones. Great nature and paved trails for walk or bike use. Creek access points for a little creek stomp action!
Great park close to the city. Kids enjoyed hiking and creek stomping. I love the mountain bike trails. Theres a bit for everyone.
The bathrooms were clean and their trails are amazing! There is so much to do!
Beautiful park on the east side of Indianapolis. The walking, hiking, and biking trails are all very well maintained. The visitors center is very informative and has some excellent artifacts.Friendly DNR staff. Cant wait to return.
What a great morning. My boys and I went fishing at the Delaware lake and had a great time.
It is beautiful but always too crowded. Worth the drive to other state parks away from indy.
The Fort is a great track. Cant wait to go back.
Very big park that has so many things to do. There are paths through the woods if you want a scenic hike. There are paths in the open if you want fresh air. And there are playgrounds so kids have something to do. You make the park whatever you want to make it.
I’ve loved coming here ever since I moved to Indy. I love the trails, ponds, tracks, and playgrounds. I love taking my dog here and always clean up after him. SOME people do not clean up after their pets and/or leave the bag there. Since there are no trash cans around, you do have to take your trash with you!
Clean, easy to follow trails. Love that it is Dog friendly
Nice state park close to town and offer some nice trails. $7/car entrance or $50/annual state pass. Use to enjoy sighting wild mushrooms here in the park but finding less and less of them.
Great park. Many trails and a birding hot spot. As it’s one of two major parks around Indy, it gets overcrowded often. Well maintained.
I could not believe that so close to Indy would find this piece of nature! Nice bike trails, nice areas for picnic, nice lakes.
Beautiful grounds, from easy to moderate trails. Lots of places to hike and picnic for corona virus safe day. We had a great time. Took the dog too.
Close to the city but beautiful.
An excellent park located just outside the Indianapolis beltway. Of particular interest is the Schoen Creek trail, which has some rugged cliff side trails sure to excite. Best hiking near Indy short of travelling to Turkey Run State Park.
This state park is beautiful. However I went there yesterday with the intention of splashing in the creek and people were playing very loud music everywhere. It was impossible to avoid it. It ruined the vibe. There are many rules for the park, but I wish that one of them was that music is not permitted. Not that I dont like music, but we all have different taste in it, so it would be better that none is present, so we all can enjoy the park.
What a great place to go if you want to go creek stomping.
Beautiful paradise. I had so much fun and excitement.
Breath Taking Place, Fresh Air, Awesome Views.
Nice. Clean. Great biking trails and paved area.
Beautiful park!! Tons of shade and open space for families of all sizes. We had our picnic by duck pond and loved the view.
Very relaxing very peaceful and very well kept state park
This place while small is great for getting out and just exploring. Good trails to hike and all. A couple of the bike trails are closed till next month but that made sense. Only $7.00 to enter the park. If you have a pet theyre allowed but must be on a leash at all times. Really a nice state park.
Gorgeous park in the big city! Gods Country!
One of the most beautiful places in Indianapolis. The park is always a great place to bike and run. There are events going on here pretty regularly as well. If you want a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Indy daily life and need nature in your life this is your place.
The Garrisons is a great space with a wonderful view. We were there for brunch with a large group. Our arrival at Noon, however, didnt allow for us to take full advantage of all the delicious looking food served, since they began to shut things down around 2p. So, its not a place for a quick meal. You should certainly have a few hours to spare to get the most out of what you pay for.Yet, the breakfast was fresh, even at Noon. I had eggs, sausage patties, French toast with a nice maple syrup, home fries and fresh orange juice. After some good conversation, and a little more digestion, I went up for an afternoon nibble. (Its all you can eat, 18.99 for adults, 17.99 for seniors.) If you dont have a large appetite, you may be better served going somewhere else. But, if you have a few hours, and youre with a large group, there will be time to enjoy all the food that is offered.I heard the seasoning didnt sit right with some of the older members of our group, bland/not enough seasoning, while other adults were fine. The desserts were fantastic! (Love a good carrot cake!)
This park is heavily trafficked on weekends. Youll run into many people walking dogs or mountain biking. If you want to get on a trail that avoids the bikers, head further into the park from the gate. Fall Creek trail is a classic Midwest woods hike that includes some views of water. If youre arriving in the late morning on a weekend, you will contend for parking with other bikers and bikers.
Its nice to see nature so close to the city! I highly recommend visiting if you want some fresh air and a moment away from the office.
