Interesting history that I was unaware of, cool to see up close and imagine yourself during that time frame. Pretty amazing what they built!
Other than the signboards you can read about the history of the fort, there is nothing to see here. The FORT is a raised area of ground, lots of trees and a lower area which is called the moat.It basically looked like every other hill with trees on it. Not even sure how they determined it WAS a fort. At least there was no charge for admission and the trees were nice. Its really more of a historical site though, not what Id pictured as a fort in my mind.
Really disappointed that there isn’t an actual fort. Just a bunch of Cardboard cut outs and signs.
Small and unassuming, this fort plays a vital role in the story of African American heritage in the coastal area. Well signed, we learned much about the construction of the fort, its purpose and role in the Civil War. Still in cleanup stages from Hurricane Matthew, it was a little hard to image the layout, but it was a good size and walkable for my toddler. Well worth a stop for history buffs.
Fun little hike to break the monotony of the beach!
Good short history lesson for the family.
A Civil War site determined to show why there was a Civil War.A small military outpost to protect the first settlement of freedmen in the South. The moat and original walls still remain and can be experienced.
Really nothing left of the old fort. Nature has reclaimed the earthworks but a few markers are there to give one an idea of the structure.
Great dood and great people
It is a work is progress but the historical findings are a blast from the past. Cant wait to see How-ell this site develops!!
Exceptional piece of history. Lots of plaques and informational signs that give a glimpse into the history of this wonderful location. Not very large but still worth a visit to any history buff.
Nice place for a walk.
Nice place to get away from tourons
The writing was informative. The information can be read online mosquito free. Highlight was the airport nearby. Not a good hike.
Bring your mosquito spray. It is a pile of dirt, WOW
I was expecting to see some kind of structure still left standing.
Glad we took time to stop by. Not much left to see except the remains of the embankments of the earthen fort. Interesting history of the Unions effort to hold the island during the war.
Cool earth fort
Quaint and always good
Very informative.
Nice little site to see how nature takes back man made structures
Great place to learn more about history and walk the grounds that felt sacred. Beautiful.
Come get your history in, in the historic Fort Howell. Well preserved trails and plaque to tell of the battles fought on the Fort Howell.
Very historic! Not much to look at but there is true history here...
Low key, self-guided, free. No bathrooms.
Just the right mix of information and ability to run and explore.
Wouldnt let dogs walk around inside
Very educational.
Not much to see here, just a very short trail and a few signs explaining the history of the fort. Trail is overrun in places by poison sumac.
Interesting spot.Short trail, nice area.
Nice very short walk and glimpse into history
Awesome
A nice hike around
