I dont know what happened this Friday but staff scanning pass was showing her nose and upper lip at Lift 10. This ski place staff used to be good with covering their nose and mouth but not today. No wonder I can spot skiers with putting their mask on chin on the hill more than other days. Wasnt staff supposedly guiding for face covering?
Tons of outdoor fun with the family even in 2020! First day on the skis and boards was early December and excited for many more days & nights at Afton this winter.
Fun staff on the slopes, and very helpful folks in the rental buildings. Hills arent very big, but there is good variety there.
Great local ski hill. Best option close to the twin cities.
Been coming to Afton for almost two decades and each time is as fun as the last. Parks keep getting better somehow - nice work park crew!
I used to be a season pass holder and loved skiing there; however, since Afton Alps became a part of the Epic Pass, the season tickets (and regular tickets) became extremely unaffordable. Unless you have a major ski vacation planned and are planning on using your ski pass in other locations, $499 (or more depending on the pass) is ridiculous for a small Minnesota ski area.
Definitely one of - if not the best skiing place in Minnesota, very big park with many option, good food and drinks in the Challet, and overall good time
This was our first time coming to Afton Alps. The staff were all friendly and the resort was beautiful. My 13 year old son had never snowboarded before and had to get fitted for all the gear. I wish the staff would have came out and really helped him in more detail. They didnt really explain any of the gear.I enjoyed our time at Afton Alps and hope my son tries snowboarding again one day, sadly he got discouraged quickly and quit.
Great for families but there are also some more difficult runs for more experienced skiers and snowboarders. The terrain park was excellent
I dont know when a lift chair man is showing his nose, he is more helping or putting me in danger.
Best slopes in the twin cities! Snow was well groomed today, lifts were running well with little wait. All in all a great experience!
Aftons new reservation requirement is very limiting and completely obnoxious.
The trail is great for biking, except for the people who are walking that you have to maneuver around.
My favorite small mid-western resort. owned by Vail now so its on EpicMix. still has a mom & pop feel though. lots of quick runs with lifts in between every run. legit park with tow rope. good for getting in some turns before hitting up Vails bigger spots like Keystone, Breck, Vail etc. food and drinks available at the base & summit friendly staff and convenient parking. cheers!
Staff is always friendly! Hills are great! Would suggest this place for youth groups! Hills are just the right size!
Pretty good skiing for no real snow
Best snow day ride of the year! Loved that they hide the cell tower with fake tree branches in order to beautify the place! Always have loved Afton Alps!
Really LOVE everything Afton adds and have to offer! Have ENJOYED coming here for the past 30 years!Would have given 5 stars but food kept this from happening.
Always a good time at Afton Alps. The place is kept up nicely, there are lots of chalets, and also a couple bonfire pits. There are a bunch of different runs to keep you entertained, along with jumps and a few terrain parks.Almost all of the employees are very friendly and helpful. The food is pretty good, but definitely not a bargain. Ive been going here for many years, and it definitely saw some major improvements after Vale bought it, so thats nice. All in all, its one of the best ski/snowboard areas closest to the twin cities.
Such a beautiful state park! Stunning views! Lots of paved, grassy and some single track trail. Good climbing available to those who want that too! $7 daily parking or $35 annual. Bring a pack with snacks & water or they have that for sale at the entrance too!
I love this place! Just too scared to do anything. The road going to the parking is very narrow, curvy and downhill when entering, uphill when exiting. I actually havent went myself to the lifts or to snowboard or ski myself but it looks very cool & fun. Maybe soon here when Im more brave ill go... But i do enjoy watching people come down.
The best snowboarding or skiing resort in the area. I drive an hour every time to go and it is fully worth it. They have been doing an awesome job updating all over!
I love skiing there every time I go, but the snow can be icy some days
Great staff very helpful. Full service ski facility Our group of 14 was checked in, got their rental equipment in great time. Ski instructors were patient and got our students up and running in a remarkable amount of time.
Covid-19 precautions worked well.
Had an excellent time! Lines arent too long and it moves fairly quickly. Everybody was nice! Would love to come back sometime!
I used to love this place back when it was locally owned. Now that its a part of the Epic group, some things have gotten even better - the main chalet restaurant is great! - but most things have fallen to the bean-counters. Lift ticket prices have almost doubled, often chair lifts and ski runs are closed, especially on weekdays. It would be nice if they at least rotated open lifts/runs periodically. Some of the best runs are set aside for racing, and then are not reopened when racing concludes. Thanks Epic, for squeezing the life (and dollars) out of this place!
Great place with many runs. Race hill is the best. However, they need to add more places with jumps and not just rails. There are no good places for nose buttering or backflipping.
Best place close to the cities for skiing. Nice eating areas, lots of runs, and they have lights.
My son is learning to ski and had a wonderful time! The weather was warm and the slopes were calling. The employee at the top of the chairlift gave my son a little advice that turned out to be very helpful! Thank you.
Afton Alps is a wonderful place that is connected to the Vail resorts system which gives you access to many of the top ski locations! If you live in the Twin Cities of surrounding area I definitely recommend getting a season pass if you plan to ski more than 8-9 times!
A brotherly tradition to come here at least once a year. Thinking about stepping it up to two times a year. We used to go to Powder Ridge (Powder Hill) which I would recommend for movie skiers, but this place is the ticket. Dont forget to check out the bar at the top of the hill. Very friendly staff as well
Great place to golf, amazing views, saw a deer on the back 9.
Really basic runs good for a family day. But none of the runs were really even diamonds. It was a little to easy. The terrain park was good and I liked about 4 or 5 runs.
This is a well run ski resort. I was there on Saturday and it was crowded but still pleasant to ski at. They hire enough staff to keep lines moving well for tickets, rentals and food. Runs are well groomed.
For a MN ski area its pretty awesome. Spread out with lots of lifts. Runs are a little short but have some steep to them.
Good for early season
Snow fun for all skill levels on typical Midwest short runs. Friendly staff, decent chalets for families and adults.
Overall great day at Afton. VERY QUICK lines to get your pass and gear. They have a wonderful system that just makes the lines fly and also you can buy your lift pass on your phone to skip the lines. Many slopes to go down with plenty of lifts to get you to the next ride. Will definitely be coming back.
I love coming here. Its always worth the drive!
Great day for a hike.
Great variety of runs and never any long lines. They have many chairlifts that really increase their uphill capacity rate. Oh and 2 dollar huge cinnamon rolls and French fries for 3.25
Afton has become an absolute joke! Nearly EVERY single late afternoon / early evening the ski teams take over the first few runs (the best runs in my opinion). Then the weekends are just a muddy mess with no where to park! The ski school is a joke too! I signed my daughter up and their routines were entirely laughable. I ended up teaching her myself! PAVE THE LOTS, VAIL!!!
Wonderful family friendly place to learn how to ski and keep coming back for more!! Thank you to all the great staff for making our ski days very enjoyable... everyone from the restaurant staff, lifties and ticket scanners... you make me smile :-)
Love having this so close to the metro. Could use newer high speed lift but they do a great job with what they have.
Friendly staff working the lifts, restaurants, and office. My son lost his phone while skiing and someone actually brought it to the office where we later retrieved it. Weekends along with weeknights when buses of kids show up it can get pretty crowded with long lines when there arent enough lifts running. Which happens much too often Ive found. The Alps parking lot could use some serious work. The Highlands cafe and Pauls Pub and Grill have some decent food while the Alps cafe is your typical quick bite to eat. I have a season pass and overall its been worth it so far.
Awesome place! Very friendly staff who encouraged our kids and even learned their names and said hi to them each time they rode the lift up. It was their 2nd time skiing and they cant wait to do it again. Cant say enough good things about this place. Spend some quality time with your kids, spend the money, and go. You wont regret it!
It was a warm day for February and the snow was a little sticky but we had a lot of fun anyway. The food at the highlands was very good.
Can use the epic pass to cover youre lift tickets out west! Great to work the legs before a big mountain trip.
Longest runs within 30 mins of the twin cities. Loyalty program gets you a discount. Fun bars at both ends of the park and bartenders know how to pour a drink!!
Slopes were great and staff was friendly. Layton in the Pub was fantastic! Super nice, patient and very helpful! He made our visit more enjoyable!
Very new comer friendly. Check in process for pre-purchased lift tickets and rental check out is very streamlined. Theres lots of workers out and about to ask for directions if you get a bit turned around. Sometimes it is a bit more crowded for what a more experienced person might want but really wheres fun if youre the only one?
Not really worth the money anymore. $60+ for a lift ticket and you get scanned at every chairlift, which is a hassle. The facilities are nice and some of the changes are nice, but they have lost their charm.
Excellent for the beginners. None of the runs are that hard. Great for a family fun day for all ages.
Skiing is not bad for the Twin Cities area. Epic has definitely made some good improvements. Great place to learn skiing or take a fun day off.
I’d love to be able to tell you about the slopes, but unfortunately I’ve been standing in line for lift tickets for 45 minutes. Only halfway through the line so at this point my morning is wasted. Not an efficient process. Friendly folks, but not efficient. If you can, buy lift tickets in advance online.
Pretty fun hill, more for beginners and intermediate riders though if you look you can find some challenging routes. Food made by aften, not a resterant, is terrible. Overall pretty good but does not live up to the hype
The runs are great, lift operators and guest service is great. The food and beverage is terrible. If they arent out of coffee, which is very rare, it usually equates to a watered down dirt drink. The kids working in the food service are rude, and instead of helping when asked questions, they either dont know or dont care. I suggest skiing here but bring your own food and coffee.
First time here! Coming from Northern Ca as a Tahoe placeholder. Friendly service at all lifts, polite and fun guests and pretty good terrain.
My first experience last winter was a very positive one, had my daughter in snowboard school with an awesome teacher. Brought my friends there to ski etc. Not sure what has changed although this winter I am deeply disappointed. I brought my daughter back for a snowboarding lesson. After two hours she was sad, angry and never wanted to snowboard again. I booked a ski lesson to try that instead, paid for it, then my daughter got sick and I called to reschedule, since she had strep throat and 102 degrees. I was told no, the lesson could not be rescheduled. So I have paid for a 2 hour lesson that she will not get, and you really think I will come back there again?! My ongoing love for skiing will continue, and my money and business will go to other resorts in the area for many years to come. Thanks for listening!
I just had $400 taken from my checking account from a pass I cancelled months ago. There is no phone number to call and no one is responding. I have to email if I want assistance and even then it takes time for someone anyone to call back.
Ive been skiing here for many years since its a short walk from my house, but this year is the last. This year I finally had the chance to get a season pass, only to find that on most days the majority of lifts are closed despite their insistence that the entire resort is open. Ive tried to bring friends and family there but have been embarrassed by the way the staff treats them - as though we are a nuisance. Ive tried to rectify this by talking with management, but they are unwavering in their disregard for the customer experience. In my opinion, this place needs much improvement in the area of operations and customer service.
I signed my 4 year old daughter up for a group lesson. Halfway through the lesson they take a break and have some hot chocolate. The ski school instructors let me in the area where they take this break, which apparently is a secure area. After I few minutes I exited the area to use the restroom. Upon returning I was laughed at and told that Im not allowed in that area and that I everyone must have a background check to be allowed. Ok, not a bad idea, however, I was just in there... Not cool! So, at this point I just wanted my daughter so we could leave. A lady then went into the area calling out the wrong name. When the lady returned I was able to see my daughter and told her to come to me so we can leave. AT NO POINT DID THEY VERIFY THE SECURITY ID TAG! Afton Alps ski school is an absolute joke! Dont waste your time or money. They are very disorganized and rude!
This review is for the golf course and not the skiing that you can also do here. Course is fun, not super challenging but not the easiest. Has some super short par 3 holes which is nice and has some awesome views for the rather dull landscape of Minnesota.
Great weekday skiing with no lines. I bit cold though. The snow is perfect.
It is very pretty and mo too far. No lines when I was there. Great value.
Good place for familiar riders ski or board... if you plan to bring beginners to this hill they have a nice bunny hill but prepare to fork out a bunch of cash for tickets and rentals... I have a season pass but that didnt get me much for discounts as I still wound up paying $170 for my 2 kids to get passes and rentals that broke down to $85 a kid not to mention I waited 45 minutes to get passes for them and another 45 min to get their rentals... then once we got geared up we had wasted 2 hours of possible riding time just getting ready... there are plenty of places to take beginners for half that cost in half the time. Super Busy every time! GOOD LUCK TO ANY BEGINNER WHO WANTS TO RISK IT!
Fast lifts, Insane amount of runs, beginner and expert. I saw classes as well. Food and bars all over. Fantastic place.
Great ski hill, with an excellent park! Plenty of food and beverage options. Fairly priced
Wonderful staff helping the kids learn to ski as part of a school Field trip. Grermat to see their goal was to help the kids have fun.
Best local place for Skiing & Snowboarding with friends n family. There bond fires pits to stay warm.
Great option for MN snow! Friendly staff and good beer choices. Prices have gotten a bit out of control since Vail took over.
Love this place. Great facilities and easy access to the slopes from the Highlands Chalet.
Great place to hang with the family, friends, or just shredding by yourself! Lots of lifts, trails, and good times.
The lifts are great and the RFID lift passes are awesome. Just buy online, and go straight to the lifts when you get there, assuming you already have a card. Runs are nice and well groomed. Instructors and classes are awesome. If you rent equipment, they are very efficient at getting you what you need. Lift tickets purchased here get you a discount on the Vail Colorado resorts.Even though I am giving 5 stars, there are a couple of things I dont like. Its stinks down by the Alps chalet around the trees. So bad that I can TASTE it in the air. Its a septic system, they need to put a carbon filter on it, its disgusting. The bathrooms are usually pretty dirty, and the 2 toilets in the mens room in the Meadows chalet were clogged for over an hour last time I was there. Its a long walk or lift ride to another bathroom. The food is not awesome, and its pretty overpriced. 2.50 for a Snickers and over $4 for a Gatorade is a little insane. The best food and most reasonably priced Ive found is in the restaurant on the upper floor of the Alps chalet. But its mostly burgers and fried bar food, not exactly healthy. We do bring our own food and drinks, but its nice to sit down and just pay for a good hot meal. Even my young kids who will eat anything have been pretty unexcited about the food, then they get hangry, and we have to leave. On busy days where the main parking lot is full, you need to park up top near the highlands chalet. Thats fine for people who know what theyre doing, but if you have kids or people that are just learning, you need to take the shuttle down. Its one tiny bus, they wont let anyone stand, so it only holds like 10-12 people. Rental car busses at airports that go on the interstate let people stand, but they wont for some reason. Apparently the bus is more dangerous than standing on sticks and sliding down a hill. Wait to get on the shuttle can be well over an hour. They need a locker facility or area. There are lockers that you can pay for, but not many and they are full on busy days. Like everyone else, I usually just toss my stuff in a corner at one of the chalets and hope that no one moves or steals it.Ive been going here for over 30 years, so none of this is new. It really is a great place to ski and snowboard, and the staff is great, but I just wish theyd finally address these issues.Edit: with the whole covid thing, I think their bathroom situation is not good. Bathrooms are disgusting. And there is a lot of data that shows that the virus is spread by fecal plumes.. Theyve needed better and cleaner bathrooms for years, and now is the time to do it. I dropped my rating to 3 stars. I still think the have great hills and lifts for the area were in, but I dont think I would feel safe going into any of the chalets or bathrooms. I havent seen anything about how they will address this.
Afton Alps is overall a great course. Lots of fun and challenging runs. And it has good food
The runs are all connected and they have about 9 chairlifts running. There are no lines to wait in on weekday mornings! The operators are friendly and polite.
It was a really busy Saturday and the lift lines were surprisingly long but we still had a lot of fun. Try to get there early as the parking can also be difficult.
Its great, staff has been awesome every time, one suggestion buy your lift ticket online before you get there to avoid the line.
Good slopes, decent prices, and friendly staff.
Amazing runs. They have apple pay at meadows chalet.
Fun double date!! Will be back
They have really improved the hill. There is a couple terrian parks scattered around with one large, dedicated area. The runs are a little short but you can enjoy many different runs. Chalet is spacious and welcoming. Theres usually a couple wood fires outside that you can sit by.
Great atmosphere, food and drinks. The staff are always so happy!
We had a wedding/reception there. The room was great and the food was really good. If I had been just a guest, Id have given it at least one more star. Having been more involved than a guest, we were disappointed in the shift in the coordinators attitude and demeanor. There were also unexpected changes that had to be handled by the brides family with only a couple of weeks before the wedding. It was disappointing.
Not my fav ski hill in MN but as far as the ones within an HR of the metro its pretty hard to top it they do a pretty good job keeping the runs fluffy and they always set up some sort of pipe for boarding which seems to get some decent usage bunny hill for starters and lessions for all thru out the day. Renting is easy and staff is helpful prices are pretty avg for both lift and rental fees
Surprised to find they had prime rib dinner really good
Its a home away from home what can I say. I love this place
The place is amazing but there needs to be a better door system because even when Im inside, Im still freezing.
Very enjoyable. Friendly staff.
Love this place! Typical drink and food prices for the area. Always get excited going back and always hate leaving.
Three day weekend and google said this place was busier than normal. Parking was easy. The line for rentals was easy. The lines to get on the mountains were easy and Afton was not as crowded as we were expecting based on the google review saying it was busier than normal. Food and beer are moderately priced.
Disc golf course is a mostly wide open and very well kept 18-hole course located on the back 9 of the golf course. Course can be difficult to navigate without map. Costs $8 but worth it.
Variety of trails to pick from making it a delight to visit
The best ski resort in the metro area. With plenty of runs and several chalets, you wont find much better unless you head out west!
This is the best ski resort Ive ever been to. The food is usually overlooked, but I find it amazing!
