I’m not sure why people are saying the tour is short. In my opinion it was just the right length. The tour guides were very informative and knowledgeable. The first part of the tour involved sitting on the front porch and learning about Mary Washington’s background, which although it was hot out was very nice. I felt like I had been transported to the 1700s. The house was well preserved and included a lot of original artifacts, such as the mirror used by Mary and George Washington and a chest from the 1600s. The upstairs area also displayed the loft in which George Washington slept. Even though you can’t take pictures in the house, the gift shop sells postcards of each room. The gardens in the back were also very pretty and well kept. I definitely recommend going here
A very interesting tour! Lots of details about Mary Washington, George Washingtons mother. The house was beautifully furnished with time period pieces and even some original furnishings. George Washington bought this house to bring his mother in from their farm across the river as she got older. A very nice gift shop also!
We were surprised/disappointed that it was closed in the middle of the week.
The guides give you a real view of life in our first Presidents time. The house is wonderful. See this and skip the apology tour at Monticello!
Very knowledgeable staff and very friendly amazing you learn the history of this place.
Well preseverved historical residence.knowledgeable guides
This is a fascinating place and the staff was knowledgeable and helpful. I would recommend that anyone visit, whether a history buff or not.
We loved our tour and being in the home of Mary Washington. This tour brings home the historical significance of the area. Beautiful gardens in the back, well preserved and proud. Many original pieces in the home. Looking in Mary Washingtons looking glass (mirror) which was a gift from George, was incredible. Looking in a mirror you know George and Mary looked in too! Wow!!
Historical sites are interesting, their guides had a good narrative of knowledge.
Very fun time, awesome being able to hear all about the history of Mary Washington. Wish there was more to look at and talk about for what you pay for but I still enjoyed my time there .
Small museum, but the guide gave a lot of detail history so it is not bad
A most interesting place. Currently it is a n attachment of 3 structures, built at different times. The story of Mary Washington was more interesting than the house. I would have enjoyed it more if the guide had focused less on the memorized story and looked at me in the face, but that is a personal observation. A truly interesting place to visit.
Went yesterday - beautiful house and the tour guides were so friendly and informative.
Beautiful house and gardens. It shed light on a person I knew little about.
Truly historic & fascinating. Its tiny & the tour is short but worth it. Learned some great things, loved the garden & gift shop & would visit again.
Wonderful staff and great history!
I honestly did not get to see the inside, we drove by...but the fact that it has been kept up with after all these years is rewarded 5 stars. I love historical places.
Great tour through a place in history. nice gift shop, too.
This is a great town to check out. A lot of history
The history is impressive. The house is nicely kept and furnished. The guided tour is not too long. House facts and local history were presented by guides in period dress.
Very interesting to be so in touch with history
Historic home of George Washingtons mother. The home contains her possessions and items from this era, explained by knowledgeable tour guides.
This historic tour was great. Kids and adults enjoyed it in our family. Its a guided tour for $7 per person. It will last around 30 mins. Get a look at the house George Washington got for his mother. Many great antiques to look at. No pictures allowed of the inside of the house. Its a must see and enjoy the town.
Interesting information. The docent was very good. Not all things here are from the time period but it was interesting to hear about the mother of our first President.
Great stories told by the tour guides. Small house and some furniture, things to see. Stories are long, not much to see after that.
Interesting with very good and personal tours.
The staff was really nice. We had a little trouble understanding the nice lady who gave us our tour though.
This is the house that Mary Washington lived in during the later part of her life. It is NOT just a museum but a historical building - one of many within the town of Fredericksburg. It was a site my mom wanted to see and I enjoyed going along with her. The Washington family had a lot of famous visitors to the house including some of the Lee Family and they also owned some property in the town - such as the Rising Sun Tavern. Many people may find the history dry but I enjoyed it. History is about all the family stories put together and this is one of those stories. It is a guided tour - they dont let you wander. You will have to pay a fee as it is, like many of the museums in the city, private and they need to pay for their upkeep. They DO give discounts to AAA Members and groups of eight or more. I think it is a must see after visiting it but it really is kind of a niche-history site. Check their website or call ahead as their hours to change due to events.
Interesting place. They even have people dressed like maids.
MARY BALL WASHINGTON HOUSE - George Washington purchased this dwelling for his mother in 1772 for $275. Mary Washington lived the remaining 17 years of her life in this comfortable home, attending to her favorite hobby in the back yard, gardening. Within walking distance to Kenmore Mansion, home of Marys daughter Betty Fielding Lewis, and her son Charles place which he converted into the Rising Sun Tavern AFTER her death. The President-to-be came to this home to receive his mothers blessing before attending his inauguration in 1789. This event is reenacted every Mothers Day. MY MOM ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! George is such a good boy, she repeated over and over as we walked away, quoting Mary Washington. (Mrs. Washington died in 1789, but lived past her sons inauguration.)Personally, I can only trod the corridors of so many historic houses till Ive had it and cry out, ENOUGH! You see one, youve seen em all. I enjoyed these places most when a special event was taking place. I would put this house high on the list on Motherss Day. On a grand scale, I liked the Lee Mansion at Arlington Cemetery more than Mt. Vernon or Stratford Hall farther south, birth place of Robert E. Lee.About the last five years of my working career, give or take, my wife and I made it a point to take a day trip somewhere (DC, Maryland, or Virginia) virtually every Saturday. The whole area is jam packed with colonial and civil war history. Travel times and distances are very manageable.
Now I know a little more about George Washingtons mom.
This is a fascinating place and the staff was knowledgeable and helpful. I would recommend that anyone visit, whether a history buff or not.
Well preserved glimpse into past of life in Mary Washingtons later years provided by son George. Beautiful kitchen garden, simple landscaping including huge quince. Gift shop adjacent.
For a small cost for admission, this place will take you back to see what it was like at George Washingtons mothers house. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and the gift shop is worth a visit.
Loved the tour and the guides!
Love volunteering in the gift shop!
A good place over all. Not much to see but good history lesson!
The staff is very nice, as well as knowledgeable. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour to tour.
Very detailed history given by excellent tour guides. One of the original artifacts is a looking glass that Mary Washington left to George Washington in her will. When you visit, you will be looking at a glimpse of yourself in the very same looking glass as George Washington!
Great place to visit.
Very interesting view into 18th century American life and an interesting view into other aspects of George Washington.
