A very historic site with ample examples of historical buildings and landscaping. However, the whole property is not at its best. The gardens need work and the house is missing some time period architecture. I give it a 4 out of 5 because of this.
The manor wasnt open at the time we went. But we were able to explore the grounds. Its worth a quick stop by.
This is a super pretty spot. Everything from the grounds filled with gorgeous sculptures, beautiful flowers, and cool views of downtown, to the historic house makes this a cool destination. I suggest bringing dinner or dessert and watching the sun set over downtown, or having a photoshoot with some flowers (although professional photographers need a permit) Entrance to the grounds and house are free. There’s also picnic tables on site, and a trail that leads to Pratt Park.
Really nice little detour from the rest of downTown Fredericksburg. There’s a nice little open field and older buildings. There’s a trail going out of the back but the real treat is the view of the sunset. You can see it partially from the parking lot but if you keep driving on the way out - look back at the bridge and there it is.
The manor was closed. Had a picnic lunch with friends then walked around the house and gardens. The gardens are beautiful.
Gorgeous house, beautiful landscaping and very peaceful surroundings. The view of the river and old town Fredericksburg is breath taking.
Beautiful grounds. Nice easy walk with beautiful scenery.
Always delightful and well maintained house and gardens. This place is a treasure
Great historical place in Fredericksburg for pictures.
Lovely gardens, fascinating history, sublime stone work, wonderful location, will come again in better times
Our tour guide was amazing. Beautiful. Way to go NPS.
Beautiful place!
Beautiful grounds and buildings!!
Beautiful manor overlooking the river and Fredericksburg. The grounds were stunning.
I absolutely love this place.
Pretty cool piece of history
Closed due to covid19, but a cool place to walk around
They dont let you see much of it. I was a little disappointed.
We love this place, come here once a while
Enjoy learning history of the area
Go here before battlefield visitor center! Awesome place. We hired a guide who really added excellent commentary. Interesting history of the manor changing hands through the years. How the union abused the manor and how not all the deceased soldier were found initially. A remarkable destination. A great story of bravery for 7th Michigan and how war evolved with Mississippi sharpshooters blocking the way.
Beautiful grounds! Historically significant mansion with view of Fredericksburg across the Rappahannock River.
Beautiful grounds, fascinating history, gorgeous view of Fredericksburg VA. Its free entry, donations welcomed. The only thing that was disappointing is that you can only explore the main floor, but not the second floor.
Buildings closed for now. Nice walk outside, great view of the river and beyond.
Beautiful grounds and amazing flower beds in mid May.
Great view. Beautiful landscape and historical landmark.
I’ve visited Chatham three times and each time it gets better. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The exhibits are unique, site specific, and very interesting. A Civil War démonstration there not only included horse-drawn artillery (that fired several shots) but logistics and ‘camp followers’, including a fully furnished physician’s cart.
Beautiful and historic. A must see if you are in the Fredericksburg area!
Exquisite views, beautiful gardens. A lovely snapshot of history. Grounds are beautifully kept.
Very Historical Home built before the American Revolution. Well Organized by the Park Service. Wonderful view looking down on Fredericksburg
Sadly it was closed due to furlough but magnificent place and so steeped in history will with a visit
A very historic estate with beautiful grounds...... greenhouses...civil war era artifacts... awesome views of the Rappahannock River....if youre a history fanatic then put this on your list
Beautiful grounds! Great views
So beautiful! A lovely oasis full of history. Peaceful location steeped in Virginia history. Visit and you wont be disappointed for a great view of Fredericksburg, photo opportunities, lovely gardens, and an interesting and engaging history lesson.
Beautiful, well-maintained Civil War period historical site. The grounds include a large garden, restored, a view of the Rappahannock River and Fredericksburg. Theres a lot to see and do here, so plan on at least 30-45 minutes.
One of the more important historical sites during the Civil War. The view overlooking Fredericksburg is beautiful. The garden is lovely. There is a short film about the importance of Chatham. Its also free!
Very good place to walk around, enjoy the grounds and learn about the areas history.
The gardens and flowers were beautiful!
Neat and historical site. Great view and beautiful grounds.
I had been to the Fredericksburg battlefield, but Chatham Manor is eminently more photogenic than the famous stone wall. This is a must-see for the Civil War buff or history student. The view from the manor looking across the river at Fredericksburg is a great sight, and gives one a better perspective on this famous engagement in 1862.
Very historical and great for the kids to run around in the open!
Beautiful, beautiful gardens!!
Ive been here twice as a parent chaperone... Once 2 years ago and had a wonderful time. The tour guide was a gentleman who knew his background, and brought it to lufe for the kids. He was quixk and efficient and the kids got to see everything. THIS year, our tour guide had veylittle personality, you couldnt tell the difference between when she was explaining something or asking something, and the kids didnt even have time to go inside. There was very little they walked away knowing from this trip, to the point that on the bus ride baxk I was sharingbwhat Id learned from the tour guide 2 years ago. Really disappointing.
Lovely grounds
This is a great place to learn about history and take wonderful pictures
Historically poignant. An integral part of Civil War history in the Fredericksburg area. Watch the film, visit Walt Whitmans Witness Trees. See hospitalized union soldiers wall graffiti. Stand on the bank of the Rappahannock and ponder Fredericksburg from Union Headquarters the days before that prolonged fateful crossing. Let your imagination gaze past the sleeping church spires and imagine Lee entrenched on the high ground just beyond them.
Beautiful and steeped in history
Civil War history was so interesting. Loved the educational movie there. Attended an art venue there on the grounds today.
Absolutely love this place not only for the beautiful garden and overlook of the river but it is a great place for any photo shoots you may need/want. I have done multiple senior portraits, family photos, and even a maternity shoot. Staff has always been helpful and kind, definitely recommend for anyone in the area.
Veey interesting history and great views. Super friendly staff.
Beautiful place! Had family Christmas photos here and spring pictures were amazing. Looking forward to actually doing a tour.
Excellent. Large portions. Chimneys stack, brisket and pulled pork
This place is always nice to visit. I highly recommend going in the spring when the floral life is especially abundant! However the grounds, view and area are all lovely all the time.
What can you say about absolute perfection? There are no words that engulf the amazing array of history at your fingertips! From the beautiful gardens to the statutes to the wealth of knowledge of the local volunteers Chatham Manor is a must see when visiting Fredericksburg! My 9/15 visit included a walk of the grounds, a tour of the gardens and a stroll through of the manor itself. A 10 minute film awaited me that provided a quick summary of prior ownership which demonstrated the majesty of the beginnings of Chatham to the heart wrenching plight of the slaves and Civil War. The grounds have been meticulously maintained and are pristine...I was impressed with the renovations!Thank you for maintaining this historical treasure and know that I will be back to visit!
Awesome place to take photos.
Very interesting place to visit to learn more about Civil War history and to really feel and get a sense of the magnitude of the destruction. This house has been through many generations and seen many people come and go and if these walls could talk.
Wonderful historical site!
Amazing work has been done to maintain and restore this historic building. Definitely worth the trip!
Great place if you get the right guide for the tour.
An interesting place to visit in the area. Some nice views of Fredericksburg, too hot during our visit to tour the grounds. Do see the film when you visit.
Beautiful place to walk around
After nearly 20 years I returned to this Manor. It seems like some buildings have been removed. The field by the parking area I remember there was two structures but not anymore. The property seems to have been well maintained and the view is great. Its nice to see it well preserved it would be nice to see people take more interest in u.s. history.
Great tour, beautiful view of Fredericksburg, covered over 200 years of Virginia history
Beautiful, historical. The NPS rangers were very helpful on answering my questions. Nice place to stroll on a beautiful day
Gorgeous place to visit and learn about the history of the area. Has a beautiful view of downtown from the back of the manor. Definitely check this place out!
The NPS and guides were very knowledgeable and they were thorough in explaining the history of the Manor. Enjoyed our visit.
Beautiful place to visit! We enjoyed a picnic lunch on the lawn and wandered around the estate! The guides are very knowledgeable and helpful!
Such a cool place with an amazing story
National Park open to the public - free. Step back in time. See what role this house played in American history. Beautiful vistas and well maintained gardens. This is a real gem. Just 5 minutes drive from downtown. If you pack a picnic, you can spend an entire day.
We did a guided tour. It was fantastic to have Frank, the Park Ranger, lead us through a discussion about the significance of the battle through the historical context of the 1860s.
Stunning place to take pictures for any event!
Lots of history right in the Fredericksburg back yardFree with knowledge people with allot of knowledge.
