An interesting place to learn about medicine and treatment of the ill and sick in the old days.I love how the staff dress up and become one with their roles. They have a good knowledge and if its not busy will take the time to explain things in detail. They were also happy to chat about what to do in the area and suggested a lot of things I could do and which places I could get a nice meal from.

Although this is a tiny house, theres a lot of great info inside. The ladies truly enjoy sharing their knowledge and did a great job interacting with the public. Lots of info on herbal preparations, and in fact 75% are still in use today! With admission you learn about the herbs, medical care hundreds of years ago, view 4 rooms of the house, see live medical leeches, and theres even a beautiful garden around back. Front door knob is a little low and awkward to use, and there are a couple steps to get inside the front door and several steep stairs to view the second floor. Nice book available to purchase for only $5. Worth the visit, the history, the interaction, and the knowledge.

Great historical place to stop in downtown. If you are looking for a quick lesson on old medical practices, this is certainly the place to go. The interpreters are also quality, both in knowledge and in customer care. We went on Hugh Mercers bday celebration and they had a very nice event with cake and free tours.

The historical aspect was fantastic. The hands on experience with smelling some of the herbs was a plus, and it really makes you think about what people in that time period had as medicine or cure. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants a historical aspect of what medicinal life was like in the 18th century.

Very interesting storytelling of dr hugh mercer and he odd and very weird concoctions and remedies. The leeches made my skin crawl. Its a very small home and really there is only two rooms you can explore the upstairs is very small and the stairs are very dangerous.

Went last winter and definitely enjoyed. The tour guides stayed in period character the whole time and did a good job of presenting the information about the house of the apothecary and the medicine of the time. FYI, there is a fee for the tour and some of the medical procedures they talk about are kind of gross, especially the leeches.

I love this place - it is very interesting with presentations by people in character about medicine in the old days. But it is expensive on its own. However, if you go to the visitor center, you can buy a timeless ticket that allows you to go to this place & 8 other historic sites around Fredericksburg. I think the pass is $32 for of that does not expire, and $16 for a pass that you have to use in 24 hours. Most of the places on their own are $7 or 8.

This was a great little museum, and they had enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff. Stayed behind after the tour and chatted for a while, it was definitely worth it! Anyone interested in how medicine used to be done, and seeing the methods that eventually evolved or disappeared to make way for modern medicine should check this place out.

Outstanding visit. It was just us and the docent. They kept in the time period and it was fun to play along. Very interesting to see how the herbs of yesteryear translate to the drugs we currently have. The 3 places for $15 was a value.

Was a little more hopeful, the staff stumbled over their words a lot. Also paid in cash got back the correct change and was confronted at the end that they had given me back too much money. I had no way of proving they didnt and I dont like arguing with people. I gave up $12 in cash. But later once I finally got my bearings from being embarrassed at this established, realized in fact they had not given me too much but the correct amount. So instead of paying $24 for our experience we paid $36, certainly not worth that. Word of caution, pay with a card or exact change because they cannot count.

HUGH MERCER APOTHECARY, estab. ca.1760 - Having fled Scotland, Dr. Mercer, a physician and pharmacologist, met Colonel George Washington in Pennsylvania during the French and Indian War. At the recommendation of Washington, he later opened a medical practice and pharmacy (they dont call themselves Doctors of Medicine for nothing!) in Fredericksburg.Dr. Mercer left his practice to join the Revolutionary army and died as a Brigadier General at the Battle of Princeton. An honorable man, no doubt.

I had a fine time at my tour but I went back with my daughter after spending over 500$ that week with the kenmore association and asked if my 8 year old daughter could take it since she missed it. They said no she had to have an adult even though I could literally throw a rock between the two rooms the tour was in and I could see her the whole time. So I told my kid well at least you can see the cool stuff which is right in the first room you pay for your tickets the lady RUDELY said this is all tour stuff. I said she cant stand here and look at the stuff in the front room thats right here. Again rudely well she can stand there and look. Up until that point I had a good experience with kenmore association but she ruined the whole trip for us and made my kid cry. Even if she had to say that she could have been 100 times nicer about it. But I feel like at the very least spending a half a grand with their association entitles my kid to be able to look at the room she has to stand in to buy tickets anyways with no tour and explanation. Rudddeeee.
