Couldnt go in but have been inside. Great old historical building.
Very historic building. Too bad those elected to serve there don’t actually represent the people. Also, watch out for no hidden no parking signs! I do want to give credit to the 4 of 5 city council members who replied to my email about the parking signs. They were very receptive to the issues I pointed out with the no parking signs covered up by the huge flowering baskets.
Access a tour at the Kentucky History Center; it is worth it. Simple, yet grand, reflecting the optimism and serious aspirations of the state in 1848. The curving floating stairway, held by a capstone at the top, fascinates with its ingenuity and is alone worth the visit. But there is much more in the simple chambers for research, drafting of laws, and debate. A nice window into governments basic needs.
Fabulous history, architecture, furniture, and period authenticity. Of course, not possible to learn or appreciate were it not for an amazingly interesting and knowledgable guide (Col. Roger Barlow). Highly recommend the tour and if at all possible, plan ahead of time with Col. Barlow doing the tour
Surprisingly it was worth going on a tour. I think there were only four people including myself. I enjoyed the history of the building and the stories that went along with it. I enjoyed the history about the one piece of furniture that they have on display.
Wonderful grounds and well-kept cold state capitol. Tours are very nice. We used to hold the annual KY Folklife Festival on these grounds, and along the KY River. It was a beautiful and well-attended event.
Great tour! So awesome to be in such a beautiful old building!
What a beautiful historic building! And on the day I visited, the Chambers were filled with Kentucky state legislators!Perhaps the more amazing folks, however, where the passionate and brilliant historians who have cared for that building and researched what happened there and are filled with stories that actually happened inside those walls over the last 200 + years! Not the typical volunteers at historical site spending time because no one else will do it. These people wanted me to know what they know! I love Kentucky just like they do. The Old Capitol building is where its at for me!
Great tour. The guide was so Informative beautiful building definitely recommend for a day of Kentucky history
Was not inside the building. This is a terrific venue for Friday night concerts over the summer! Thanks so much for last night and Superfecta even though it was a wash out after their break. Hope to be back soon!
Beautiful!
It was a very interesting and learning activity.
Summer concert series on the lawn are a must attend event! Great for family, kids, couples, or just by yourself!
I like going to sit on the lawn an enjoy the summer time music series they have there every other Saturday, throughout the summer months. I have been inside to look around only once. I am glad they finally fixed the fountain.
Outdoors: Great place to chill in the heart of the downtown. Summer concerts. Nice arts and crafts shops; restaurants just across-and-adjacent the street: American, Italian, Mexican, Vietnamese. When I am in Broadway Clay Pottery shop/studio, the visitors that come in seem to be highly impressed.
This is what the seat of government should look like: majestic and atop a hill with a broad street leading up to it.Worthy of a visit
Great Kentucky landmark. The rotunda staircase is worth the trip alone.
History has no reiveiws
Love the old capital they put concerts on and movie nights
History is great and it wont be around long go check it out its beautiful
Beautiful sight, I am glad it is being maintained.
I took an educational, entertaining guided tour of the Old Kentucky State Capitol Building on Wednesday, June 27, 2018.Guided tours are the only way to tour the inside of the building. The tours begin with a walk to the Old State Capitol Building from the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History (The Kentucky Historical Society Museum) a couple of blocks away.Paying $8 for a self-guided tour of the impressive collection there at the Thomas D. Clark Center also entitles one to take a guided tour of the Old State Capitol (and take a self-guided tour of the Kentucky Military History Museum). I think its a great bargain. Before entering the Old State Capitol Building, my guide (Steve) pointed out the spot where Governor Goebel was shot, which is marked by a plaque. He also pointed out some details about the assassination. The entrance foyer and overall architecture of the building seemed impressive. The tour included a room that contains a huge collection books, primarily law-related. This room had served as the mail room for the state government long ago, Steve said. The self-supporting staircase in the Old Capitol Building is an impressive sight itself. Steve (my guide) said the only step in the staircase that is supported at all is the top one, which is inset a bit into the wall on one side--to keep it from lifting up, not to keep it from falling down. I remember many years ago on my first trip to this building, a 1972 eighth grade class trip, that a tour guide told us that the harder we stepped on the top step the stronger it got. We children had fun stepping and jumping on that step. And I still enjoyed the staircase on this second visit, which was in June 2018.It was also nice to see the structure of the building. And I enjoyed seeing the furnished Senate and House of Representatives chambers with desks, chairs, and artwork. Two large gas chandeliers (one in each chamber) originally there remain. But, they have been converted to electric. One of the two cloakrooms is still there. My guide wasnt sure if it was the one for the Senate or House of Representatives. But it was nice to see this room, along with some furnishings. The room even had a chamber pot in it behind a curtain. This building did not have either indoor plumbing or electricity when originally constructed.During the school year there are probably crowds of school children taking the tour. But on the afternoon of June 27, I was the only person there for the 1:30 p.m. tour. It was a privilege to get a one-on-one tour with Steve. He patiently answered my questions, and the tour took probably about an hour or an hour and fifteen minutes.I urge persons in Frankfort to seek to take a guided tour of his historic structure.
What a great setting for the Black Cat 5K race! Had a great time.

The lawn in front of the old capital building is a great place to go and enjoy some of the festivals that Frankfort puts on. Also, this is the location of the Christmas tree lighting.
Nice place to see downtown Frankfort from, the lawn is always beautiful and plenty of shade trees. Lots of cool history as well.
