I had the pleasure of spending three days in the Martin F Schmidt Research Library researching the genealogy of my family. Since the stacks were closed due to COVID-19, the library relied on running the desired books to the researchers. The system worked well and I discovered a surprising amount of new information about my ancestors. They also practice Safe Library Practices by wiping down all surfaces and placing all books into a multi-day quarantine.

Its a very nice place with the history of Kentucky. We were there for the Memorial of Officers of Kentucky who passed away while working and other causes of death. Our son died on the way to work last year.It was very nice.

I went with my sons 5th grade class for a field trip. The tour guide for the old capital building was great. She held all the kids attention and had them participating in discussion. It was pretty cool sitting in the rooms where they ran the government of KY back in the day. The floating stair case was really neat and the library was beautiful,.even thought it was smaller than I thought it would be.

Our visit started off just right with free parking across the street. Admission covered this building and the state military history museum up the hill a few block away. Get there in time for a tour of the Old State Capitol building for the history of Frankfort and KY. The 200 yr history of the state will take at least 1 1/2 hrs to get it all in.

This Kentucky Historical Society museum houses an impressive display of Kentucky history artifacts and information. It covers the period from pioneer days (and even earlier) to the 21st century. The $8 admission price would be a great value for this museum alone, as I see it. But the admission fee also includes a guided tour of the Old State Capitol Building and a self-guided tour of the Kentucky Military History Museum. Both of those buildings are within walking distance of this one.I devoted two or three of hours to a self-guided tour of this museum and still did not see everything. The displays were interesting and educational. I urge visitors to allow at least three or four hours to tour this museum and the others included in the admission charge. The museum closes at 5 p.m. It includes a gift shop.Take time to walk down the hallway where pictures of Kentucky governors and brief biographies of them are displayed. I found the biographical information educational and interesting.I also took the guided tour of the Old State Capitol which takes about an hour and recommend it, too. Just before the 5 p.m. closing time, I then devoted a few minutes to the Kentucky Military History Museum. Although the military weaponry was not as interesting to me (Maybe because I am basically a pacifist.), others might find this two-story display of military weaponry through the years, a few oral histories, and displays related to military medical personnel fascinating.I strongly urge visitors to Frankfort to seek to take time to tour this history museum and the Old State Capitol, maybe even the Military History Museum. Im glad I got to enjoy visiting all three during my June 27, 2018 visit. And I rate this history center as the best of the three.

The Military Museum is a great walk through Kentuckys past and celebrates the men and women who served to gain and hold the freedoms we enjoy today. The Chinn exhibit is a masterful display of firearms from all over the world and the volunteers obviously love to share the lore of Kentucky history. We also visited the Kentucky History Center which houses a really cool interactive walk through Kentuckys history with examples and artifacts from prehistoric to modern day. Well worth the small admission.

Although there aren’t very many things to look at inside the main campus you do get access to three different areas, including a guided tour of the old capital building. For $8 you can spend a nice afternoon learning about the perfectly mediocre state of Kentucky, and it’s capital. That’s quite a deal, especially for Kentuckians.

Appallingly racist - there is an exhibit that asks people what they would do during the civil war - for example - how would you treat your slaves? Or - what if you were pro union and owned slaves? Do you keep your slaves and not join the union? These questions should not be in any museum. Hard to believe this exhibit is allowed to continue.
