The new ownership has really made an incredibly positive impact. Ive been to dozens of shows at Harpos, but not since all of the improvements. They now have security everywhere, and those guys are really on top of everything. Its very welcomed. Most everyone is aware the neighborhood isnt ideal, but I certainly felt more comfortable with the heavy security presence. I think anyone would agree Harpos is just an amazing place to go see a show, and personally, I will once again make Harpos a destination. Big ups and kudos to the new ownership. Harpos is really like no other spots. It is legendary.
Wow ! Great Venue.SMOKING IS PERMITTED...Free parking... Historic Rock Venue.Pretty clean place, the restrooms clean too. Security was cool. The sound in general was good, but the mic volume wasnt the best.A nice personal venue and personal experience. General Admission. You can get pretty close to the stage, but the stage is high up, not at level. ( This and the mic sound is why I didnt give it five stars. )We had a great time. We will definitely be back. Thank you.Mushroomhead 2-15-19 withVentanAWorldwide PanicScrub CentralIdk the name of the other one
Glad this place is reopened and doing hard rock and metal shows again. Sound was great and the staff was friendly. Looks like there is still some renovations to be done but I’m thankful that someone decided to take it on and re-open this legendary Detroit concert bar. Pics from the Hatebreed 25th Anniversary Tour on 4/10/19.
There was no air conditioning and one fan. I visited in the summer for the static x concert and it was unbearably hot. We were only able to stay in the mosh pit area for a third of the show due to the heat. Smoking is allowed and encouraged inside, and ash trays are no where to be found. The womens bathroom toilets were overflowing, and no one bothered to clean up the water all over the floor.
A true legend in the Detroit music scene! Every metal band from Anthrax to Slayer have rocked these walls! Great to see it making a comeback along with the rest of the city!
Cant wait for the day when it reopens do to the pandemic shutdown down
Had a great time on 4-10 at the Hatebreed show. Got to meet and hang out with Obituary!!
What a great space! The drinks were amazing, the bands sounded good, an awesome night
Proud to be working with the new ownership and management to update and preserve this piece of Detroit music history.
Harpos is hands down my favorite place to go for concerts! Great history. Great music! Drinks are pricey though. Thats why only 4 stars!
Went to see the Cro-Mags and you can tell it was an amazing place in its day the lit up dance floor was nostalgic. Its old and yes it smells like a musty strip club. I like the fast exit and on ramp to the highway as this is located in an area of Detroit looks like it has been bombed out.
Went to so many concerts here i cant count. Always had a great time. Love how close you feel to the artists with the low stage.
Was fun but definitely dirty, probly wouldnt go back
If your into hard rock like me in the 80s, then youll love the place. Large seating area and easy to locate. Favorite local bands are common. Good atmosphere so stop in youll be happy you did.
I just want to say that the owner is amazing my daughter was at a Phil anselmo and the illegals concert which they said was amazing . She lost her phone and all her identification . Which they found and was returned to us . Also the owner went out of his way to meet us to return the phone all I D was there as well . We live in Canada so his honesty and thoughtfulness was so appreciated . My daughter and her friends will definitely be returning to this concert venue.
Very large venue with tall (6) stage so viewing is friendly for everyone.
The staff are awesome. The experience was great. I didnt realize there were still places like this left behind from my youth. We had a great time. And got out of our parking place behind the building easily. After our Detroit driving experience, we were pleasantly surprised.
Decent venue but no sign of an ac. Definitely killed this concert. Nothing better than heat stroke while rocking out. Other than that, was pretty decent and plenty of space.
Historic Detroit concert theater. Parking sucks, sketch area, rough conditions inside but still a cool place to see a show.
My husband and I have been coming here since we were teenagers and have always loved the vibe, big stage and great sound. Since new management, we’ve seen some improvements, but would definitely love to see at least some ceiling fans to circulate air. I’m sure everyone who’s ever been here recently would agree lol Static-X. Summer. Sold out!!!
Great place! Friendly staff, great parking, cool atmosphere
I feel like I need to leave a review, even if reviewing might make it worse in the future do to crowding .This place is fantastic. Apparently, it was horrible, but its under new management and its damn fantastic now! Great drinks! Spacious! Great tables and chairs with awesome moshing and dancing areas! Seriously... Its great. 100% my favorite place to go for concerts as of now. Highly recommend.
Its a large venue. The tall stage and the seating tiers are nice.On the bad side... the beer selection is pathetic. The sound system is highs and lows, nothing in between. There is essentially no ventilation.
Great club & employees. Atmosphere rocks!
Great place to be a metalhead!! New management has brought the place back better than ever. Hardworking, friendly staff. No steroid crazed bouncers trying to kill you like in the old days, lol. Look forward to more awesome shows here!!
Love this Place
This place was a crazy awesome venue. They allow smoking inside which is incredible. Great stage and sound system. For those complaining drink prices were high they most not buy drinks at concert venues. However it was scorching hot in there and water was $3 thats a little ridiculous.
All my classic thrash memories were made in this open venue.. the bartenders and staff are nice there and efficient
This venue is great all the way around. It was my first time there and The Detroit God Esham brought the house down. Much love to Harpos and Esham. I will definitely attend other events in the future. Also much love to the other artists that performed tonight.
I understand the smoking indoors. The sound was horrible and the drinks mixed too strong. The bathrooms wreaked of bleach. Security guards were overweight and smoking marijuana outside. Silly. The photo provided was taken out back. Kind of puts it into perspective haha
Beer was way overpriced ($8). It was freezing inside. But Halloween was great.
Still needs remodeling but its getting there. Sound is good and seating has all good views of the stage but needs work
Depending on your concert priorities, this is either an ok venue or a horrible venue. The sound quality is decent, and views are decent. Waters cost $3 and beer is around $6. The building itself is starting to fall apart and the bathrooms are atrocious. Folks were allowed to smoke everywhere inside, which is as disgusting as it sounds. Theres no air conditioning, fans, or ventilation... so get prepared to sweat (or freeze in the winter, I heard from other partons). The area is a little sketchy, so pay for secure parking down the road if youre concerned. I probably wont be attending anything here again. ️
Have very good price and nice people working there and keep it clean.
Love this club. In fact its one of my favorites. Recently bought by a new owner but unfortunately the heat doesnt work and it was chilly. The stage is huge and the acoustics are killer
For any band with the balls to shun Live Nation... This is the spot. Well all be here.
This was my first visit to Harpos and shocked is an understatement. I have to clarify that this review has nothing to do with the bands that played there that night this is strictly about the theatre. The word dilapidated comes to mind, it looked like it needed to be condemned years ago. As soon as you walk in you can see how badly this place needs help. The paint was chipping from the ceiling, the carpet was disgusting (probably because they allowed smoking in the foyer and people were using it as an ashtray) walking into the main part was worse. Their big screen tvs that looked to be about 20 years old, the floor was sticky and gross, the lighting was ridiculous. Their idea of a bar was pathetic and way overpriced for what they offered. The sound was terrible. The bands did awesome considering the venue they had to deal with. All in all just horrible.
Lot safer than it used 2 be due to increased security
Probably my favorite venue in Detroit. I love the small feel to it.
So I purchased tickets on Harpos website to the wrong event. I immediately contacted them when I seen error. I was told they will not refund or exchange for correct event. Now get this. I cant even sell the tickets to recoup my money as they are will call and non transferable. What kind of customer service is this. Not like they have business beating down their door. So I just threw $50 out the window I will drive to Toledo to see the event now Terrible way to do business. Heres the kicker, had I bought the tickets on Ticketweb I would at least be able to sell them to get my money back!! Terrible customer service
Legendary concert venue! Parking sucks but well worth the pilgrimage
Same old Harpos. Parking was jacked (not nearly enough), but the show was great! See ya in 2 months!!
Harpos is a Detroit rock institution. Its a dive in a dicey neighborhood, but the bands that have passed through its doors are legendary. Everything there is very basic, but its exactly what you picture when you think of a hard rock and metal club.
I give Harpos an A for effort. The owner is really trying to re-establish this concert hall. I find the staff to be very hospitable and I must add honest. I recently left my wallet laying on the bar. I did not realize it was missing until the following morning. In this day and age, I thought it was gone forever. I called Harpos and left a detailed voicemail, hoping that perhaps someone turned it in. A few minutes later I received a phone call. They had my wallet. The bartender noticed it and put it away. The following day I picked up my wallet. Nothing was missing. I consider myself very fortunate. The outcome could have been much different had it not been for the honest employees of Harpos. I will be forever greatful.
A historic place that has that rock n roll vibe as soon as you walk in! I had the privilege of helping out backstage a few weeks ago, and an awesome feeling knowing that the stage has seen so much in its years! The owner was a great guy to talk too, along with his staff. It had that comfortable feeling all around. If you ever get the chance to check it out, its a must see place!
Way too hot. No air flow whatsoever. Bathrooms over flowing with a mystery liquid that was never cleaned up. They also ran out of water to sell. Dangerous situations all around.
Best place in the entire universe.
Great venue,, big name bands!! Huge stage huge place with lots of history,,,it is the old Harper theater
Real deal detroit music vibes
Went to Mudd Fest last night. I thought the new owners had redone the venue. Ughhh. The whole place has an old musty smell mixed with stale cigarettes. ( they allow smoking ) while there are no ashtrays out, people must have been flipping their ashes on the floors or in their beer cans. The womens bathroom is disgusting with more than half of the stalls over flowing.3 bars on the inside with only one of those bars serving liquor(the others beer /water only) so the lines for drinks were huge. 7.00 for a vodka tonic...ridiculous considering the surroundings. On a brighter note the concert rocked, bands were all awesome.
Ive played there 5 times within the last year and its THE BEST place to hear live music. Its legendary and theres nothing like Harpos. Ruzvelt is doing amazing things with this Beautiful place. Highly recommend. Make no mistake.... Youre safe there.... The security and all staff are great people. Secure parking. You should go!
Favorite place to see a rock concert, been frequenting Harpos since 1997
What an amazing experience compared to decades past. I had to call the hotline twice and spoke to the most pleasant and helpful person I never would have expected. When I got there, I spoke with security about parking and was surprised by a friendly, helpful, smiling response. Roosevelt, the owner treated me very well and even waved goodbye when I left. The place does need work still, but theyre doing it! Its actually in process. The restrooms even had paper towel & soap etc.. oh yea, friendly bartenders too. (Need better beer though - porter, IPA etc?)
Played the stage for the first time! Freaking amazing!!! Ruzvelt is doing awesome things with the place! Cant wait to see it all come together!!! Keep up the great work! Cant wait to come back!
Great venue they even let you smoke in there, got smashed and grabbed parking on Harpertho so find good parking
Went to a show last night for the 1st time in probably 10 years. Used to go to harpos back in the day, 10-20 years ago. Im not sure how they could open back up the condition its in, nothing has changed, its smells like mildew n mold the same carpet is in there from 30 years ago, with everything, spilt drinks, piss and vomit on it, it smells so bad it made me nausous, no ventilation either. The bartenders and workers were all miserable. The sound is aweful, Ive been to hundreds of concerts and I have seen the bands that played there last night elsewhere and they dont sound like that. Still the worst venue to go see a show at. Very disappointed. I was hoping since they had closed for a while, they may have made some updates. Nope, just got worse over the years.
Its a cool club, cool croud, theres excellent great secured parking at 13340 harper (Bravo) the lot with the yellow and white school buses, $20.00 saves you your window or door from being broke and your valuables in your car safe.
Most underground place there is in Detroit. Love it
Its Harpos. Hasnt changed much in 20+ years. Including the carpet and smell of the mildew thats beneath it.
I really miss going here for metal/rock shows. It used to have them all the time but its pretty far and few in between now.
Harpos is a historic concert theatre and a cultural icon of Detroit. In the mid 90s it dipped in staff, booking and maintenance and this took its toll. Lucky for Harpos lovers it was bought by a someone with a passion to make it great again. The safe parking security perimeter is larger then ever with friendly professional staff that are a well oiled machine. The lobby, house and bathrooms are cleaner and look better then they have since the 70s with all the lights working including the famous lit up dance floor on the second tier. Their are plenty of friendly bartenders for any size crowd and the candy counter has been revitalized. For anyone that has been there in the past you have to revisit and if you havent your missing the rock and roll experience of a lifetime.
Havent been in over 20 years. It was the SPOT for many generations!
Best venue by far for metal
Its a fun bar!
It is what it is. You feels like your in your friends basment. Stank and dirty with neck breaking veiws. Harpos never left the 80s and I loved it!
Always a good time at harpos
Because its still Harpos.. Phil Anselmo and the Illegals killed it last night..
Place is dirty, but a great place to see a band up close.
Fun show!
Everything was good but the ladiies bathroom was barely functioning
Best time everytime
Great show pricey drinks still the same old Harpos
I love Harpos! Just wish they would have some better shows
Best metal venue ever
Harpos, the legendary rock and roll club. Rough around the edges but a good time once you get over your initial unease
Great place! The owner is really doing a fantastic job of renovating and making it great.
Way too HOTTTTT!!! The speakers sounded like they were blown 20 years ago, and never replaced. As huge of a fan as I am of Slaughter, I couldnt even understand Marks voice, or follow the songs cause I could not understand with the horrible acoustics. There was one 48 diameter fan, it was very HOT, it was 90+ degrees inside the venue. They definitely need AC and speakers. Harpos says it will allow 2000 people inside, that would be standing room only for most of the concert goers. Im glad I wouldnt have to attend with 1999 other people, cause its not worth your time. Save your money, if this place is iconic, I wonder how bad venues are that arent even iconic. Harpos has a long way to go. Smoking shouldnt even be allowed inside. The staff was very nice, but that was it.
No heat, the supposed secure parking is just a security car driving around and not a fenced in parking lot. I dont see what inprovements have been made since the 90s the stools seats were loose and could have fallen several times just sitting down or getting up. The sound was never consistent between bands. No reason to go back especially if the weather is cold or hot out
Very violent and problematic venue. My friend went and seen Misfits here years ago but yold me he was stabbed so i was always shying away but finally went and got into 3 separate altercations 2 of which were outside pre show and post! This place is in the worst ghetto and the local community think they can come up there and mess with the patrons. Also my friends car was broken into there is no security
There was no remodel, just some paint an added a few signs...so it is still the best place for metal shows!!
Ratty looking venue but the staff were very accommodating when I had a health problem. The bands were great and my overall experience was good.
Cool feel to the venue. The area seemed not the greatest but still was a lot of fun. Huge stage for the artist. The floor was a little scary when everyone was jumping but all in all way a great time
Good drink prices, awesome and friendly security, great sound! The only bad thing is the area. Its a real bad neighborhood. .. blocks of empty half burned/rotting houses and buildings. We werent out of the truck for 5 minutes and heard someone shooting a couple blocks away. Other than that, good venue.
Awesome place!! I always have the best time here!
What happened to the renovations? No heat! So sad a great venue is falling apart
The heat wasnt on and I was so cold my nose was running and my fingers and toes were numb...even with wearing a long sleeve shirt and two jackets. Staff was rude (minus the security guys) and the entire place reeked of cigarette smoke. They allow smoking inside the venue, which I thought was illegal. Not in a great location either. Ill be shocked if this place is still open a couple years from now.
Wish ppl didnt smoke inside the experience would have been more enjoyable.
Super fun concert, but it was not a heated building.
Left the Septicflesh show that I was excited to see, would of traveled out of the area but read that Harpos has improved, new management etc.. I spent the entire concert surrounded by pot smoke and cigarette smoke, when they claim to be smoke free. Severe mold the ceilings, no heat and doors that were chained which I am sure is against fire code since it was near the entrance. Tables and stools that were in need of repair. I am wondering how it is still open and has a liquor license because anywhere else in the country this place would be closed due to such obvious dangers. It was below 30 tonight and I am still shocked that any decent band would play there considering the condition of the venue.
This is the same exact place it was 10+yrs ago. Very little if anything has been improved, the carpets are still the same cigarette burned burgundy, the bathrooms are a trainwreck with stalls missing doors, not flushing, or having a poor excuse for a door where its too small to hide anything and its even CROOKED! Some of the sinks dont even work. Its also true that they do not turn the heat on, so you cannot treat this like other venues and come in wearing a tshirt, you will start to freeze. Our entire visit I did not see any security whatsoever and it was run by a skeleton staff, but to their credit the bartenders and woman working the snack stand were incredibly nice. At this point of being under new ownership, you would at least expect them to have fixed the lights both inside and outside.
Fun place to go
I really love this place but the womans bathroom is horrifying. Lol
The absolute worst venue I have ever been to. Smoking weed and cigarettes in the establishment and horrible sound quality with a soundman who cant comprehend what his job is and screw over musicians. It is sad to see such a place ran by complete morons. My reviews are usually calm but this time I cant stay calmCarpet on the floor had puke, beer, feces ( looked like it anyways) most the stalls had no doors. I watchew a guy spill a whole beer on the carpet and the lady working the food counter shrugged and kept working. How is this place still open????Please never go here. Avoid at all cost
Way cooler than I thought it would be ..... Underground rave bar that gets down
Love Harpos!
Best venue!
So fun cool place to be
Just bulldoze this place already, the smell of mold & kerosene, smoking inside the venue from customers & staff...Not an ideal place!
