One of the best places in the area to go walking if you’re a dog owner, Bear Mountain Reservation has a system of trails on light hills next to Candlewood Lake. The longest of these is the looping red trail, twisting through open fields and peaceful forest. On this route you’ll come to a junction with the orange trail, which drops down the rather precipitous slope to Candlwood Lake if you need to work those calves.South of the property is FCI Danbury, a low-security federal prison, mainly for female inmates. You may be interested to know that famous conscientious objectors like James Peck and Robert Lowell were imprisoned here in WWII, as was screenwriter Ring Lardner Jr., who was blacklisted in 1947 during the Red Scare.

Pretty nice place except for the abundance of dogs running around off-leash. Signs clearly say dogs must be leashed, but in 2020, who cares about the comfort and safety of others? “The rules don’t apply to me”, say 80% of dog owners. IOther than that, it’s a nice place. Terrain and trails are fairly rocky. They just installed some stationary exercise stations along the beginning of the trail, which are quite nice.

Great little park off the beaten path. Trails need to be marked a bit better.

Great area for hiking with an expansive network of trails. There is also a trail that leads down to a nice overlook of candlewood lake as well as a walk through a good sized meadow in the middle of the reserve.

This is a great place for a short quick hike. The hiking trails are easy to follow; they are marked pretty clearly. Watch out for slippery mud and puddles during the summer as well as fallen tree stumps that have fallen on the trail pathway. Also is a great place to bring your dog!

This is a great place to walk my dog. The trails meander through pure nature. It is amazing that this place exists in the midst of a highly populated area. On most of the trails you can not see signs of civilization. Ive been here many times, it calms my soul. Bring your dog.

One of my most travelled trails. Has a nice meadow and access to the lake with a rope swing. There are plenty of back trails to explore, and the main trails often have fellow hikers and people with dogs.

Neat trail. Clearly labeled with trail markers. Expect some muddy patches unless it hasnt rained in a while. Varies from a wide flat dirt trail, to a single person wide dirt trail, to a rocky trail, to completely rock covered areas with painted markers on the rocks to keep you on track.

Bear Mountain is a great place to hike, especially with dogs. While leash laws are in effect there are many untethered dogs in the park. You can also hike right down to the Lake Candlewood Shore and take a dip!

Nice area for hiking/mountain biking that provides access all the way to the water on the New Fairfield side of Candlewood Lake. And theres a very fun rope swing into the water back there, but its a shame that it keeps changing as people continue to cut it down just as it gets broken-in & people get used to how it works.

Great area for some light hiking in Danbury. The orange/red trail led down to the shore of candlewood where you can swim or just look at the water.
