Cool piece of street art and who does not love one of these worlds largest items! Its located at the side of the road and the whole of this area felt a bit sketchy to be honest.Parking is limited nearby and there is not much in this area apart from the Hydrant itself. It seems years ago there was a water feature stroke element but this is now broken on the sculpture. Also check out the mural nearby.
A cool place to stop by. There is parking on street and it’s free on Sunday. The parking in parking lot cost $3 for all day.
Fun trip to see the Worlds largest fire hydrant. Dont take the dogs. LOL. Its a quick trip and in a parking lot to make it convenient. While there, look for the mural that looks like you could drive into a tunnel. Two things to see in one stop.
This is free public art installation by South Carolinian artist Blue Sky.This would be a fun little stop if you have little kids is it promotes some wonder and fun conversations.According to Atlas obscura it weighs 675,000 pounds and was built to withstand a hurricane even though it was designed to look as though it had been hit by a giant car.Paid parking is available in the Busted Plug Plaza and on the street in front of it. Another of blue skiesTunnelvision is nearby as well. FREE PUBLIC ART. See you on the road, @gabrielcraft.me
I thought this was a bit weird when I first heard about it but, I appreciate art so I had to check it out. This was something good to check out with my smaller kids. I dont think my older children cared. My dog probably would have been more fascinated by it, as he might have thought his prayers had been answered.“Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory!...(1 Chronicles 4:10).
We were in the midst of a 15 hour trip. This was right about in the middle so we stopped to see it. It was about 5-10 minutes off whatever the main highway was. It’s pretty neat. Of course it isn’t super thrilling, but I don’t know what the other reviewers expected from a piece of art. It was super cool and different from anything else I had ever seen. It’s in the middle of a parking lot. Even better, it’s free and it was worth getting out of the car to stretch my legs around it. Also, across the parking lot was a pretty nifty mural.
I didnt purposely go looking for this landmark in Columbia but its a pretty interesting installation. Its quite realistic and I like the small touches such as the no dogs signs around the perimeter! Dont forget to go and look at the building with a bridge painted on it just across the road.
Very cool!÷
It was cool however it being on a busy street its hard to take pictures without many people looking at you from their cars
A beautiful sculpture; a must visit if in the area.
Nothing spectacular.. It should have looked more like a real fire hydrant and without all the broken up concrete around the base..
Unique piece in the center city. My boys loved it
If going by worth a look
Not much to it. Just a big fire hydrant sculpture in the middle of the city. It was fun to stop and see!!
If youre going to be in Columbia you cant pass up the worlds largest fire hydrant. The bonus is you also get to see the Tunnel Mural.I wish the city would fix the water pumps in the fountain part of the sculpture.
What is there to say.....Lol.... Its a giant sculpture on the street in the middle of a city. I can say I saw it. Lol. Its Over 40 tall. Weighs 675,000#. Tornado proof. No dogs allowed within 50. Lol
Cool experience to see its 38 feet tall
Enjoyed it as a novelty and inventive art. Worth seeing if youre in Columbia SC
Man, it sure is... a large fire hydrant. It really is ... just sitting there, huh?
This was a cool little stop. Not much around to explore. But the hydrant was worth stopping. Theres a pretty mural on the wall near by.
Nice street art but it is surrounded by a concrete barrier in a parking lot. Good for a pic if you are in town - buy I wouldnt make a special trip for it.
It was really neat to see but would have loved to know more about why its there and when it was built.
When I first arrived I really couldn’t believe my eyes, for what I was looking at was something I had never expected to see in my lifetime. A massive fire hydrant that looked completely different then the usual American ones towered of me. Though, I was skeptical at first, it was actually a really nice sight. I wouldn’t recommend stopping here if you want a long excursion, but for a quick stop it is truly a great place.Around the bottom of the hydrant lies a heap of broken rocks, which I believe to be simulating a sort of crash site. The hydrant looked almost as if it had fallen from the sky and as such, it was stuck in the ground with a strange angle. A fence, and road dividers blocked the viewers from interacting with the monument itself, but it was done as a part of the art piece and by no means was it put there by anyone but the artist themselves.I feel that this odd take on the idea of a fire hydrant actually made it more enjoyable for me and my family, and with the nearby mural, this stop is certainly something that you wouldn’t want to pass up.
Great spot for photo-op. In a parking lot, right by the sidewalk. Cant miss it.
Great and cool stop! Love these roadside America attractions.
Quirky attraction in downtown Columbia SC.
Super random, not sure of the point of this art piece but it makes for a fun photo!Weird thing is there is absolutely no signage telling you what its there for, or who the artist is, or why it was made, or when?
Just so everyone is clear this isnt the world largest working fire hydrant... As pointed out several times by a friend who will remain nameless. I thought it was cool and definitely worth taking a gander if youre looking for something quick to do while downtown
Well a picture says a thousand words.... This is it. In all its entirety. So I was a little disappointed.
Would have given it a five star but there was a no dog sign.. lol
I mean you would think oh meh, but its actually impressive to see
It’s a huge fire hydrant in a parking lot, fun to see, not sure how else to describe it.
I found it interesting, love the art work. Would like to see a dog next to it looking at it in amazement.
Crosswalk never changed but amazing from afar!
It’s just a giant fire hydrant. You can’t really say anything else. Just want to know if it works...
Gated in but still something to see. Unfortunately your dog cant pee on it.
This was a neat sculpture, but the location was pretty odd and there was quite a bit of construction around its perimeter. Maybe thats part of the art...not sure.
We travel a lot and frequently use Trip Advisor and value the opinions of ones willing to take the time to give an honest review. We enjoy seeing new and unusual landmarks or visiting place of interest, This town is remarkable. This is definitely something to see along with the Tunnel Vision Mural.
Its pretty big LOL. We just parked on the street and took a few pictures. Dont miss the big mural on the building behind the fire hydrant. Its pretty cool.
I think there could have been a better choice of art to display.
Just a big fire hydrant nothing else around what I could see
It is huge. And looks like a fire hydrant.
I only gave three stars as it is a very cool idea but there is no where to park without paying. Maybe Im incorrect and Ill change my review if proved otherwise but all I could see was metered parking.
A must see, whether tourist or local
You are not allowed to bring 80 foot tall dogs here.
Largest hydrant, but still doesnt meet your expectations! I would expect it to be more colorful at least. However the wall murals surrounding the hydrant were great !
Interesting photo opportunity. Thats all there is hydrant and parking lot and a nearby building with nice art mural.
Pretty cool!
Nothing to see except this but it was fun to take pictures
Not a real fire hydrant. Its a sculpture. Water component turned off now. Cool to see as a side trip when visiting the area
Not a destination spot, but worth driving by if you are in the area
Could make the surrounding of the fire Hydrant alot better.
If youre in the market for a giant fire hydrant, and youre not a 50ft-tall dog, then this is the destination for you! No 50ft-tall dogs allowed.
Its different
It is a giant hydrant sculpture. I’m sure it is the worlds largest. Only 3 stars because it is non working
A very unusual experience. Waiting g for the worlds largest dog to come along. Same location there is a fantastic wall mural. Worth the stop
It was worth taking a detour to snap a quick photo. Not sure its worth getting out of the car or anything lol
Fun for a quick photo with friends from out of town.
No plaques about why it was there. Dogs not allowed anywhere near it.
Its a giant fire hydrant, nough said. If you are disappointed then I think you need to realign your expectations. Would have been nice to have a gift store. ...lol
Worth a stop if youre in town and like fun novelty stops...
Very cool. And huge
Cool art peice
It was cool looking. If you are into visiting weird things, this is one.
Its just a giant fire hydrant, but its kind of cool for a quick stop and a picture.
I expected this would be at a dog park, or at least a park. Not the case, it happens to be in the downtown church district.
If a fire hydrant has H2O on the inside, what does it have on the outside?
Largest fire hydrant is all it was. Needs to be cleaned up around it. This could have been made to be a great place if it wasnt so run down around it.
Giving it 2 stars mainly becauae of location. It is neat to see but was wanting to get a few pics with my kids, their dad is a firefighter, and thought itd be neat. But its literally in a parking lot.
I was nice I had to visit
On my.list of pictures with the biggest this made my husbands list.... wish they had a plaque explaining it on site... but I did not see one....
Hahaha Huge Fire Hydrant
Stopped here on our way through. Its a quick stop and conveniently its in a parking lot so we didnt have to search for parking. Its a quick stop/photo opportunity.
Amazing work of art!
Its a giant fire hydrant in a parking lot.
Its a thing, its there. Right along the lines of going to see the worlds largest pencil. Not as impressive as the worlds largest ball of twine.
Well, I huge fire hydrant.
Sculpture in city. Worth a stop to gawk.
One of my favorite places to go in Columbia!
Huge hydrant
Fun to see and take a pic with.
Almost no room for getting a picture . Can’t touch it but does have free parking.
It is such a fun piece of art. Make sure to go across the street to include the painting that goes with it.
Ok as landmark..near murral tunnel..
If your in the area go see it not something to go out of your way to see
Only a fire hydrant. But worth the photos!
Good thing to see
Best worlds largest fire hydrant.
Interesting structure, a landmark to the city
