It’s a small art gallery located near the Uchicago library. It’s full of fancy modern art pieces. It does not take long to see all the exhibition, but I liked it very much. Creative installments made of tar paper, plastic straws, and cards are just amazingly cool. It’s a free exhibition, so if you are near it’s a definitely a place to go.
The Smart Museum of Art is a delightful and educational experience; that embraces the essence of community! The docents bring the exhibits alive in a manner that is refreshing, entertaining and compliments both the University of Chicago and the citys heritage. What is also remarkable; admission is free; rare in todays market-share of museums and exhibits.
Not too big of a museum and timed entry keeps the number of visitors low.
It worth to visit if you love arts. The good thing is no admission fees required.
Always free and exhibitions change every few months! Good place to see some art if you are around the hyde park area.
Great art. Friendly. With refreshments. Eye opening.
Beautiful exhibit! The staff is well informed in the artist and answered all my questions.Highly recommend
They have a great display and the people working there are really nice and helpful. Great place to bring your kids to explore and learn.
Amazing art in an amazing urban center. I cant believe you can get so close to so many masterpieces (from classical and impressionists to modern). And Its across the street from Millennial Park with restaurants and free concerts. Wow!
Love the space here it allows for all types work to be admired in many different ways.
Fun little museum, doesnt cost to get in and there is a good amount of stuff to look at. I attended a work shop getting to black smith a little bit, so much fun! And Im amazed that it was free!
Kind of small exhibits but always interesting pieces shown here!
Took my north shore students down here to check out a different part of the city. it’s a beautiful and comfortable space with really great curated art. my students loved it!
Great FREE museum. Small but mighty! Wonderful exhibits, friendly staff, nice little coffee counter. Love Nick Caves Soundsuit, and the Mark Rothko! We take our out of town visitors here. Its a great resource for the area!
Visited the special exhibit on onceptual art from China. Loved the tower of human fat.
The Smart Museum is small, an easy and engaging place to visit. Its easily accessible by public transit and there is a parking garage nearby. Exhibitions, which rotate, are really tremendous, tending towards the avant garde but including the historical and always celebrating the vast diversity of the art world.
The curators bring new art and ideas to the Hyde Park area. Always worth a visit
Love the museum and art work. Will return!
Lovely eclectic collection of art. Staff are friendly and museum is accessible.
The new director of the Smart has transformed this museum into a completely updated space. The exhibits featured are truly amazing!
Worked with this team before on branding and email campaigns. Good culture, exceptional work and talent throughout the organization
This is a great little museum on the University of Chicago campus, and the best part: ITS FREE!!!And seriously, for being a free museum, it has a great collection. They have work by Joseph Albers, Mark Rothko, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Louis Sullivan (just to name a few). They also have great temporary exhibitions that are always well curated, and they always have interesting things in their lobby. They have artists paint a huge wall in their lobby or create a site-specific installation, and they never fail to impress.
First time visiting the Smart Museum and I was very impressive.
This was a fun adventure on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Informative and interesting. My only complaint is that one of the workers at the museum was a bit rude and must work on her customer service. I didnt get her name as I didnt want to ruin our visit by giving her too much attention. We felt singled out and that was not cool. I understand she was doing her job, but she could use some lessons on approach and how to use her words in a non confrontational way. Other than that we had a wonderful time!
Interesting, historical exhibition. However, they should do better job posting updates about whats open. We came in and were told that all exhibitions are closed but one.
Spacious interior. Very well curated.
The art and political meta is cerebral AND sublime!
A wonderful experience. I brought 70 students here and I was impressed with the docents and the collection. The museum is on the small side, but they do a great job of creating a narrative with there displays.
Free Large Art space with great artists and beautiful art work. My husband and I enjoyed our time here.
This is truly a gem on the University of Chicago campus! I have both visited in my free time, as well as attended numerous private events held at the museum. It is a lovely place for both occasions. I definitely recommend visiting often as the exhibits rotate and there are always new and interesting artwork.
Hyde Park gem. This is a gallery with eclectic exhibits that can be seen in its entirety over 2 hours. There is no dedicated parking which can be a bit of a challenge at times but once you find it you can easily walk to the Oriental Institute, Henry Moore sculpture and main Quad as well. I hadnt been to the Smart in about 8 years and was sorry to see that the outdoor sculptures were mostly gone and missed some of my old favorites from their once permanent collection but I could easily return to spend more time with exhibit on 19th century engraving. Contrasting that was a very contemporary exhibit. The Smart is free and there is a small coffee shop for snacks if you get peckish.
A great free museum.
Free admission, really unique exhibits!
Museum has small exhibits, from abstract art to black movement. It is a nice place, free admission, well organised. There is also small museum cafe
Hidden in the depth of uchicago this place is a real treat. Although this is small museum, it offers a very diverse art work and very insightful information. Highly recommended to any one who visits uchicago.
Really great space and interesting curation
One of the hidden gems of Hyde Park! Wonderful, thought provoking exhibitions...and did I mention that its free!
Don’t miss the exhibition “Fieldwork” by Tara Donovan, it’s amazing. She uses slinkies, index cards, straws and more to create large pieces of work. It’s on until 22 September 2019. This was a highlight during my week in Chicago.
Great exhibit space and free!
There are other better place you can visit in Chicago
Went to a free art making function which was awesome. If you see an opportunity to go, go!
Its okay not really my cup of tea but I am sure others will enjoy more than me
I love this quick art fix
Closed on Mondays! Excellent museum with interesting exhibits. Good way to while away an hour or two.
Excellent space and curation
Small, well-curated museum. Free admission. Great place to start a date, if you have an interest in art.
Kind of small but some really cool pieces
We had took a tour of the museum and did art work.
Solid way to spend 45 mins to an hour at this free museum.
Really nice, small scale museum with free will offering admission. Well curated with an excellent collection, and a good size if you cant spend all day in a larger museum or have people in your group who cant walk as far.
Do much creativity and fun making art.

Really wonderful small museum with many opportunities of engagement. Love the cafe space outside of the gallery. Beautiful outdoor grounds as well.
Its small but I love how the tour guides get your mind to think about the art work.
This museum exceeded my expectations. The art inside was intricate and unique with a variety of pieces from around the world and different times. Its also a decent size and well worth a visit.
An academic deposit of artistic antiquities and artifacts. A lot for art aficionados to learn from here.
Educational information always
Not big but solid free museum. Went and half of it was closed for renovations but still good.
Very cool place
Quick cool clean
The Smarts collections are small, but the quality here is remarkable. There is a little something for everyone. Very enjoyable way to spend a few hours and make a redneck like me feel cultured.
The BEST UNIVERSITY ART MUSEUM! The exhibition makes perfect balance between academic research and public interests!
Great museum, always interested well curated shows, worth getting on their mailing list
I liked it, was very small though
Went for an event. Great place!
Go discover arts! Youll be glad you did. Admission is free.
Post, November 2017: Meter parking available. Since this museum is on the University of Illinois, free parking was a challenge and I was lucky to find free parking during the day. WIN! Upon entry, an employee in the help desk kindly directed me the must see exhibit if Im only spending a short time there. Another win when it is free admission and open to the public always.Houses 15,000 pieces of art all cramed into this building! I dont know much about art, though I like the idea of going back into time of how people lived through film/video, sculptures, posters, and paintings.Even better when crafts are donated to other charities esp the museum display by Jayna Zweiman: Welcome Blanket. The artist allows participants to make a blanket for new immigrants or refugees. This exhibit closed down last December 2017.Spend some time at this museum when youre around the area.
This museum is cool as hell. Theres some unique art and its situations right on U Chicagos campus in one of Chicagos most notable neighborhoods, Hyde Park.I went to a free charcoal figure drawing class there like a week ago, and they gave out free pizza.
Great exhibits, nice help, mailing list, near the black hist museum.
Hidden Jem on the campus of the University of Chicago. Many traveling exhibits. Nice people.
Everyone sjould go here they sre so great in involving people with art, great for kids
Employees only speak to you to tell you what not to do.
It was actually closed when I went but it seems cool.
All is close except the modern gallery. Travel so far for nothing and the webpage dont indicate that is under construction. What a shame on the museum.
A fun and free museum to go with the family or art lovers. The cafe is great to study in and their outside area is beautiful for a snack/ coffee break.
Great exhibits
Great!!!
Free museum inside Chicago University
Wonderful display of historic art and memorabilia
Beautiful area and art, stressfully silent and white, though
For a small university museum, they do have some interesting pieces including a Rothko
Great art
For a small center lots to see, especially if youre in neighborhood. I
Modern avant-garde art on the University of Chicago campus
