Great place for a walk in the woods. Quiet and hardly any road noise. Mostly single file paths that require sure footing. Limited parking and no parking allowed in main road. Beautiful scenery and plenty of nature (deer, squirrels, snakes, etc.) Dogs welcomed on leash. Some benches along paths.
After lying down and rolling in the shallow creek water, my dog gets more exercise than in a week of neighborhood walks. One of my favorite places!
A nice local place to go for a walk in the woods. Parking is very limited.
Excellent set of trails through easy terrain with great wetlands, hilltops, and wildflowers to explore. Only downside: far too many irresponsible humans let their dogs off leash - Im not sure why this is such a popular sport here.Trails run along New Hope creek and past two old mill sites, long washed out. Neither of these are the big Johnston Mill that gave the area its name - thats about a mile downstream in Duke Forest. But, lots of great history to explore here. Trails also run along the ridges around a large wetland along Old Field creek. Gorgeous Spring wildflowers like Atamasco Lilies are easily found, and birding is excellent, too. An excellent afternoon hike any time of the year.
This is a wonderful bottom land trail so close to Durham and Chapel Hill. New Hope Creek is really pretty. Look for Atamasco Lillies in April and Passion Flower in the summer.
Great shady trails with easy topography and super creek access points for hot dogs. Only negative is parking. Lots holding 4 cars only.
Really nicely maintained natural area with lots of trails.
This is a great hiking spot for folks looking for a nice, mild hike. No major inclines to keep an eye out for, but you will want shoes with good tread. I recommend wearing a water friendly hiking shoe so that you can play in the creek and cool off. This isn’t a swimming hole spot, but it’s a lovely woodsy walk. Keep your eyes peels for poison ivy, it’s all around the trails in small spots. But don’t let that stop you! Go home and scrub off in a cold shower (not a bath!) with a washcloth and dawn dish soap twice to save yourself the inconvenience.
DO NOT GO TO THIS PARK! It is totally infested with ticks, alligators, beautiful scenery, interesting trails, and very few people. And we want to keep it that way, so just tell everyone that it is totally not worth the trouble and well keep it to ourselves!
Beautiful trails. Lots of mushroom!
Nice quick get away into the woods. Nice hike. More people than I would have liked but still a good place.
Great scenery, quiet, great place to be one with nature.
Great hiking with wildlife.
Gods beautiful handiwork that people are kind enough to allow us to hike on! In a very high real estate area that trees and beautiful paths are saved!
Beautiful place to hike especially in the spring/summer. We loved the trail by the river, the kids splashed in the water and its shady enough. Will definitely go back !
Great place to walk. The sounds of the birds and flowing water is relaxing. Watch where you step because there are plenty of roots. Might come across some snakes (they were black racers) so let them pass by or walk past giving them some room.
Great trails, close to downtown Chapel Hill. Love the Bluebird trail for an easy hike.
Beautiful but crowded
Johnston Mill Nature Preserve is a Triangle Land Conservancy property in Orange County between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough. There are about 3.5 miles of hiking trails throughout the preserve. New Hope Creek runs through the northern part and is very rocky with a few nice cascades and drops. Old Field Creek is a tributary and has steep bluffs to hike along. Its also a nice lace to see spring wildflowers. The parking areas are small so try to arrive early on weekends.
Great place to take your dog not to many people and beautiful scenery
Probably my favorite local hiking spot
Was a very nice hike next to a creek
A great place for short hikes. Nice stream. Good for family/kids
My fav walk in the triangle
I love the creek that runs through. Beautiful sight to see and relaxing noise while hiking.
Wonderful walking trails and not over used, small creek is really pretty.
My family and I are regulars. God and Triangle LC did a good job here. Beautiful area, well preserved. Trails are easy to moderate, with a couple patches leaning towards difficult. PRO TIP: Robin Trail is NOT a loop, by itself...we found out the hard way :)
If you like just plain old beautiful nature, minimal interference with landscape the way it has grown, and can handle some well trampled roots all ng the way, this place is for you!!! Wonderfully peaceful WITH a background concert of rushing water! Delughtful;.
Very nice woods hike, some minor elevation changes, water features, well maintained trails. Saw some wildlife such as squirrels and rabbits. If you want to try a new hiking option, this is a good spot.Horses, bikes, ATVs prohibited. Pets should be on leash.
You can hear the birds & your own thoughts.
Great place to walk and forget your life. Dont be a douche and leave garbage. Walk safe.
Beautiful nature preserve. Triangle Land Conservancy is such a great asset to this region.
Nice, quiet trails, well maintained and well marked. Enjoyed our approximately 3-mile fall hike today.
A beautiful place to meditate
A wonderful nature preserve well maintained by the great folks of Triangle Land Conservancy. Great for hiking and trail running. Slightly limited parking, thus when organizing a group outing if suggest to car pool.
One of the best trails in the area. Its the first places I take friends visiting to show of the ecology of region.
Excellent walking trails. Very peaceful and quiet. Trail names are frequently and nicely sign posted. Not a lot of wow views. Think of it as a walk in the woods behind your grandmas house if the woods were 296 acres.
Extremely well maintained reserve. The trails are very well maintained, and all have clearly marked metal blazes to let you know which of the three trails you are on.If youre looking to see the old gristmill, youll be somewhat disappointed since only a small piece of the original wall remains. The trails are very easy to follow and see, and a pleasure to walk on. Birds and fat squirrels are everywhere. While walking its pretty easy to sneak up on deer in the area as well.
A pleasant easy walk with my dog and a friend. Definitely Will be going back
A glorious trail right in Chapel Hill. Walk, jog or run along the river option or under the green canopy.
Beautiful terrain and nice trail selection. Watch for mud at the beginning if its been really wet out!
I always find peace and joy here.
Easy access; sound trails with benches; big trees along a playful creek.
Peaceful and shady place to take a relaxing hike. The trails are well tended with even some tree species labeled by park rangers. The path often follows a stream with a small bridge or two to cross.
Ive been walking here for years...beautiful trails at any time of year, well maintained. Hilly, more rugged terrain (many roots)...not an arduous walk, but best for the sure-footed.
Nice leisurely stroll. Mostly level. Has a nice stream and lots of trees.
Beautiful location, well maintained; some trails can be tricky.
After entering this first you feel like you are a thousand miles away from civilization. What are you will probably see very friendly people hiking.
Beautiful trail, well maintained and popular!
Lots of fun trails to get lost on
Limited parking, but great paths and wonderful scenic river views.
This is my favorite place to take a quick 3 mile hike or meet friends to let kids play in the creek.
I love hiking here. A nice way to get out by a quiet creek for walking, running, and reflecting.
Cool little place to hike. Lots of adjoining trails so you can mix and match a route
Beautiful walks along New Hope Creek and surrounding forest.
Great hiking trails. More than five miles of trails if you hike them all.
TLC preservation.
Well-maintained, modest network of trails through forest, alongside the creek, and through grasslands afforded by the Duke Energy corridor. Regularly run into deer, birds, and butterflies.
A wonderfully natural Trail right between Durham and Chapel Hill.
Good hiking opportunity. Not crowded
Beautiful place for a hike. Several geocaches in the area.
