We enjoyed a 3+ mile hike through the battlefield and old railroad line route. Following the old rail line, the hike is flat and easy, while surrounded by some rolling hills, forest and the lake. We took some of the side trails to former cannon placements and the Star Fort, which added some 370 feet of elevation gain to our 3.87 mile walk. We also walked across the earthen dam that helps to form Lake Allatoona, adding some distance to the walk. Most of the walking is shaded. As you walk along the lake, look to your right for a small trail that leads down to the lakeside. There, youll find a nesting site and a great place to watch birds, geese and boats.
Alot of memories made there growing up my 2 year old absolutely loves it. Beautiful, great, historical place
Love taking our dogs to this trail or should say trails, good fishing areas and for once quite.
Absolutely beautiful hike. Great trails and paved paths, gorgeous scenery and family friendly.
This place was amaZing ...I dont believe its haunted or anything but could def feel some kind of presence just walking to the water ... Far from scary ..but almost could hear the battle going on ...absolutely love it cant wait to go back
Pretty neat stop.Nice views.
This is a nice place for the family. It was free so that was a bonus! Our kiddos (5), (8) really enjoy being outdoors and learning about history so this was great for them. They enjoyed the walk and reading the information about the battle. We saw a live turtle on the path which was so cool, and our daughter loved seeing all the giant moths (we love finding friendly wildlife on our hikes). There were some pretty cool looking mushrooms along the trail. The battlefield is well kept and very informative. We will suggest this to our friends and family who plan to visit the Atlanta area.
Very beautiful peaceful area with interesting reverent history. Very nice Scenic views of the lake. And Marina.
We really enjoyed it. Great hike. Educational.
Love taking pictures here.
Great short hike. It goes right by the lake. Has some good interpretive signs that explains the battle that happened here.
Amazing what happened here during the civil war. Great sign plaques to explain everything. There is also a memorial here from each state that soldiers were represented from. Beautiful site right on Altoona Lake. Other civil war sites in the area.
New to the area this was a great place to have some outdoor and recreation time!
Theres a lot of neat history behind this place. We loved reading all the plaques and getting to experience a part of our history that is still so well maintained.
Very educational, family friendly. Love this place. Not too long of trails.
Great place to hike, walk, relax and enjoy!
Great place. Highly recommend it for a good time.
Great piece of history, beautiful, quiet trails by the lake!
I just love going here with family for the day! But all the women laying out in the parking lot was very weird...
Absolutely love this place!! So prey, so peaceful and you can Geocache!! If you dont know what that is...Google it, its so much fun!! The wind was amazing and kites fly so well!
Nice trail to walk and get some fresh air. Great history here
Beautiful place! Scary at night. Perfect for hot summer days because its cool in the valley where the train tracks use to be.
Easy and self guided trail. I have herniated disks and was able to walk the trail using my rollator. Wonderful experience even during government shutdown.
A few more signs would be great.
Its quiet, no beach, not much but a small lot and lovely shaded, level, very easy leisurely stroll type trail. For that I love it.
A great place to walk, enjoy views of Lake Allatoona, and learn about a place of Civil War history.
I didn’t think it’d be worth the stop at first, by far exceeded all expectations. The photos don’t do it justice. I arrived before dark and didn’t have much time to walk the trails. It is somewhere you can be easily confused on finding the way out of because there are so many different paths.
This is a nice place to hike. You have the option of very flat and easy to some moderate stuff. It doesnt seem to be really busy during the week which is a plus to me.
Nice clear place great trails
Great place to walk your dogs. Dont forget to pickup after your dogs :-)
Very informative location, alot of very well marked and the old forts and trenches are very well preserved. One of the must see battlefields in Georgia
Great place to hike near the lake and read about the civil war history in the area.
Beautiful and maintained and great offshoots to lake allatoona
Amazing trails!! Make sure and take water and plan the day to be there!
Very nice! Beautiful winter walk. I had to cut my time short but plan to go back soon!
Good trails. Heavily used, so the trash is a bit much.
Good trail, well maintained. Good history.
Great scenery, with signs that help to understand exactly what youre looking at! Awesome place.
Peaceful experience...you can walk to the lake or the trail that is marked....a step back in time
Beautiful sites.
We love this place for toddler/child friendly hiking. Its shaded, stroller friendly and beautiful. We usually stop at the lakeshore to skip rocks or play in the water before hiking back.
Nice! Early mornings are quiet and peaceful. Enjoy!
Beautiful scenery, interesting history, and plenty of trails.
Excellent. The area is well marked and explains the Civil War battle that took place there very well. Trails are easy and in January with the leaves off the trees, you can see the lake.
Nice spot on the back side of the berm. Fished there at night, caught a few flathead. Signs posted no overnight parking, chance it..
Beautiful place and need more handcap parking.
Amazing place to visit. So much history to experience in a lake side setting.
Very nice area to visit.
Great little battlefield. Very well preserved earthworks. The 19th century railroad cut is also interesting. Definitely worth a visit.
Not what I was expecting when I heard it was a battle field. I was surprised that this much park and good time spent walking the many quiet trails was free. There are a lot of educational battle info sign, no artifacts but you do see the trenches. This is a nice place to walk and spend about a hour or two. Could use some picnic tables. The cut for the train tracks is cool.
Main trailhead stays covered in old black stagnant water that you have to walk your dogs and kids through
Great history, its like a little Gettysburg
This place is gorgeous. Its a nice little walking trail that takes you away from civilization for a little bit and also has some remnants of the civil war. Theres a nice little history to be learned here.
One of my favorite places to hike. Peaceful, easy trail l or you can challenge yourself by taking the stairs to alternative trails. Easy access to water if you want to cool off.
Wonderful, peaceful place to walk and leisurely hike! Love it and it is our dogs favorite place to walk.
Great place to walk your dogs and yourself! Lots of history here.
Loved reading all the historical markers. Nice place to walk and enjoy being outside.
Its a great place to walk and learn about a historical place.
Excellent place for a stroll with two toddlers
Quite a bit of interesting history next to our campground and nice memorial to all the states north and south that lost lives here.Plus some nice little hikes for exercise
Its a relaxing place to go and release stress
Very small area, but cool spot to check out.
Wow! I had never heard of this bloody battle before. Its a nice hike. Dont forget your water a d bug spray. It mat be a goid idea to look up the trail beforehand- directions are not really clear.
Informative plaques on decently well-kept paths detailing one of the most brutal battles of the Civil War.
Bicycled on this pleasant gravel path. Heavily wooded with view of Lake Allatoona.
Beautiful and a great place to drop a line
Beautiful Pet-friendly Lakeside Walking Trail
Ifs well kept history and the lake is beautiful!
Was only there a short time but loved it! Need to make time to come back again!
Nice trail..
Very nice memorial for the civil war. The trails were well kept and easy to follow. The signs along the trail about different civil war sites was interesting and fun to read. My two kids very much enjoyed the trails as well.
Great hike. Lots of Civil War info.
Beautiful walk and nice hidden areas to swim in the lake
Very amazing an very historical to be.
Historical site for the civil war
This is such a beautiful place.
With so much to learn, see, and do, this destination is great for waking, biking, swimming, and climbing (at your own risk). The natural rock face runs beautifully when it rains, as well as the crisp clean appearance of the rocks. The history of this Civil War site is posted on many pedestals along the trail. The rangers always make sure to not intrude on anyones leisure time, and always take care of any fallen trees blocking the path within a day or so. Lastly, the reenactments are simply stunning to behold with Civil War style weaponry, Id recommend this highly to any History Enthusiast. (reenactments are on the first weekend in October each year)
Nice challenging trails with descriptive historic signs throughout. A interesting Civil War stop not to miss.
Very nice. Very relaxing to sit and watch the water.
Great walk with a dog. So peaceful. There is also a great little cove about 3/4 of a mile on the right hand side.
Nice hike and some good lake views, also a nice civil war memorial
Nice hike and history
Beautiful lake views and so much history! Perfect spot for parents to hike with their kids! Great for trail runners as well.
Small but significant civil war battle site. Lots of interpretative signs. Beautiful place.
Interesting history lots of walk paths and informative signs.
Nice place to walk and not too crowded. Ive been a few times and, for the most part, hardly see another soul there. The parking lot is small, say 20 cars at most, and normally, there are less than three there when I come (weekday afternoons). Paths are clearly marked and well maintained and the Civil War memorial is quaint. Good place for a nice walk or a short run.
Trails are not easy to follow.
Easy hike, clean trails. Parking lot was small and tight. Its a great historic site to visit.
I love this place. Unlike many other places to hike where you feel like you are in a crowd this place is pretty empty even on Sundays.
Very intersting civil war information
Beautiful short, gravel, walking path mostly along the lake. Also hilly wooded trails available. A lot of informational signage about the history in the area along the wooded paths.
Beautiful scenery overlooking lake alatoona. Several trails to follow and explore. They have reenactments throughout the year that include shooting of cannons. Everyone always gets a kick out of that. Bring along a picnic lunch and enjoy the day.
Great hiking.
Great place for a walk by the lake.
Nice place for a hike. There are some good bandit trails that will make the most of this small park.
Relaxing when its not cold but even then its one of my fave trails . and yes EASY TO GET TO with different trails
Peaceful walk. I was taught from a young age to leave nature cleaner than you found it so it wouldve been useful to have a couple of trash bins along the way.
