The atmosphere of graveyard in itself could definitely spook someone out if you decide to go there after sun down. But, I aint afraid of no ghosts... Most of its residents have been there at least 150 years. The age/grave markers and tombstones most certainly give you the feel of a mid 1800s necropolis. Its serene and peaceful there. And youll also notice that several other past Baltimorian dignitaries are resting in the vicinity. A place such as this will make one understand how much life happened before you came along.
What a lovely stop to make! Signs surrounding the grave provide a snapshot into the life of Edgar Poes life, as well as the life of Virginia Clemm and the mystery surrounding it. The rest of the graveyard was no-less enjoyable: what a treat it was to see all of the authentic headstones which had become so old and worn that some had no writing on them! I would love to see the church provide new grave markers with each persons information alongside the original marker. Definitely a must-see of Baltimore!
An interesting historical location. Not only is Poe buried here, but so are several veterans of the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, or both in some cases. Also buried here is Baltimores first mayor. Some of the burial stones and vaults are in rather strange locations, such as under the porch or walkway of the church, due to the cemetery being there first, and the church being built later.
This was a wonderful spot, when amongst the city it was nestled in and felt like a small retreat. The placards could use some major restoration in some places as I would have enjoyed getting to read more of the history there. Overall it was well taken care of and quite the beautiful experience.
Super cool if you grew up loving Poe like I did! Also great historical site!
We visited on Halloween for a tour of the catacombs under the church and a reading of Poe poems next to his grave. Some eerie live organ music also. I hope they keep doing tours like that, it was awesome.
I walked here from down by the waterfront and found it to be a sweet little church yard. I didnt know what to expect but I enjoyed it more that some cemetery.
Cool to see the grave of famed poet Edgar Allan Poe and his young wife Virginia. Easy to get to from the street and open to the public.
The real grave is just around the corner. Was a peaceful graveyard.
The feeling of solitude and love can be felt at this place
Didnt get to go inside, since it was locked. Probs due to COVID. there was a big grave with Poes name on it. And a sign outside with some info.
Its nice. Not much to it really. If you visit Baltimore it certainly a historical place youll want to see at least once.
It is super accessible, though I definitely recommend going during the day. We stayed by the Harbor so it was a quick walk to the corner entrance. We viewed the memorial first, plus the information posted on placards conveniently placed throughout. It was more crowded than I wouldve liked, but you should still follow the path all of the way around. Youll see Poes grave and a cool little graveyard.
Pretty creepy but lots of history and its free. Parking can be difficult to find and it closes early. It is smack in the middle of Baltimore, so dont be surprised by the noise. The museum next door has select hours but the grave yard is open longer. Edgars actual grave is in the back but his memorial is in the front.
Wow, really cool place. Very old gravestones there. If you are an Edgar Allen Poe fan, you will love this! Many fans of his drop by, some are still alive!
So amazing. Be sure to walk all the way around the church!!
As a fan of Poes I very much enjoyed playing my respect to him. The Westminister church is absolutely stunning. The history that this church sits on top of and protects is amazing. There are many graves to visit and pay respect to here. Not just Poes. There is a founding father her too and many respected families and service members. Its amazing to read some of the history here. And see some of the very large tombs. Many unmarked graves with just simple stones. For me this was a must to visit. Thank you to the church and families that have fought to preserve this piece of our history.
The gate was locked, but was still able to see the grave site and get pix.
Cool and spooky that building was built on top of graves. Beautiful gardens though.
Amazing place! Although the gate is always locked. We hopped that bad boy so we could pound some brewskis with America’s favorite alcoholic spooky boi author! Cops came, it was a whole thing.
The entire outside is available to walk through without a tour when the gates are open. I walked all around and at this time of year the leaves are falling, creating a fantastical carpet of rich golds intertwined with heavenly pinks scattered among the deepest crimsons I have ever seen! Edgar Allen Poe may have had a most miserable, hellish short life, but his earthly body was laid to rest surrounded by a little heaven on earth! Its a must see corner of history!
Very neat. Glad I got to see it. Worth the short walk.
The best part of my whole birthday vacation
Again with everything closed no bathrooms and no parking for the resting place of a national treasure they seem to need a bigger maintenance budget
If you are a DIE HARD Edgar Allan Poe fan then your going to love this. I’m not a huge fan sooo this was a cool thing to see but the excitement don’t last long. I found looking at all the old graves really interesting. Some signers of the Declaration of Independence are buried here as well. Definitely take a walk around and see all that is put in this little area. You will have to pay to park in the area and Baltimore is not cheap on parking.
If you like old historical cemeteries this is a must see
FASCINATING hisory contained in this cemetery!! Anyone even remotely interested in literature or history of Baltimore is doing themselves an injustice by not stopping here to look around.
Beautiful historic cemetery and repurposed church. Unfortunately, as another reviewer stated, the gates were locked on Sunday so we couldnt enter the grounds to explore even though the website advertises that they are open daily from 8am to dusk. Poes grave was near the street, so we could see it but the other areas were inaccessible. Theres a beautiful Egyptian Revival gate along the west wall that is worth viewing.
This historic cemetery is fascinating. Take your time here. Its quiet and the photo opportunities are many. Make sure to see both of his graves!
Great little walking spot! Theres more than just Edgar Allen Poe!
Very interesting place to visit. A quick stop if you are in Baltimore.
Such an amazing trip down history lane!
To any lover of American literature this place is moving. The loving posthumous tribute to Poe immediately inside the gate captures the time it was made. The grounds are steeped in Baltimore history and deserving of your time. Poes original internment site is in the back and is where the Toaster visits every year. The weather was unseasonably cold and wet during out time there and felt so appropriate.
Was cool. But can only see from outside of fence
Hugest grave, filled with many fraudulent Ed Poe bodies and one real one
So beautiful and peaceful for being right downtown. I loved it here
Love the old cemetery. Please note that Edgar Allen Poe has two graves. The place where he is buried now is right at the entrance. To find the his original grave, keep following the brick path. His old grave has a head stone. There is no cost to wander the cemetery.
Went here yrs back and want to return soon. My favorite author / writer. If you climb the steps you will get the best pictures. Once I took tons of pictures and after uploading them found the creepiest things. Wish I had those pictures to show. Im going back to take more. Glad I live here in Baltimore...
Interesting spot in a heavy traffic area. Try to park far and enjoy the walk. Its a small graveyard yet interesting. It wont take you more than 15 minutes to read and learn about this area.
Really easy walk to get here. Not only is Edgar Allan Poe buried here, but the graveyard has a few other famous people from colonial times. Edgar Allan Poe was originally buried elsewhere in the graveyard but moved by the gate due to his popularity. You can visit both sites. Definitely worth a walk through.
Pretty cool and informative. Great place for people interested in historical places.
Its a fairly unassuming and small graveyard inside the city. Poes monument is right near the entrance, but his original burial location is actually near the back of the cemetery. It would be really nice if they would take the time to fix up the pathways and maybe restore some of the tombs and headstones.
Exactly what youd expect. Its a gravesite.
So cool, so many interesting people buried here! Worth a visit!
Cant Believe i almost missed my chance to visit my most influential author. His lifes work changes people to this day
Took my son here for a school project. Easy Street parking a not too busy on a Saturday. Other notable Graves located here on the church grounds including one that is bent and was on Ripleys Believe It or Not. Most burials are from the 18th century. Its Baltimore so theres trash everywhere. I didnt bother moving any of it for my photos. It was pretty windy so it kept blowing to the corner.
I dont believe in ghosts, but this place gave me the creeps (in a good way). It was near Halloween and I walked down there from UMMC on a dark, cold, rainy night. I was there all alone with this old, vacant and darkened church as the backdrop, gothic wrought-iron fencing, red brick, sparse-looking trees, wet leaves scattered everywhere, and the recessed lighting in the ground lit up the graves in a way that was very spooky. And despite being in the middle of downtown, this little area seemed oddly isolated from the noise of the traffic as if it existed in a different realm. This atmosphere was only reinforced when thinking of the dark undercurrents of Poes work. This sounds like a negative review, but it isnt. It was an oddly profound experience like Id stepped into another place and time.
Cute little getaway to historical graves
Next to Westminster Hall, there is a cemetery that wraps around the back of the building, most notable for the marble and granite monument near the western entrance, which marks the burial place of great American poet, Edgar Alan Poe. The cobblestone paths are dotted with helpful placards that describe the history of the cemetery and the people buried there, including Philip Barton Key (son of Francis Scott Key, who wrote the Star Spangled Banner), James McHenry (signer of the U.S. Constitution and Secretary of War), and Samuel Smith (Commander of the battle of Baltimore).
Great, free historical site to visit in Baltimore. Grounds were clean, and the information on the interpretive signs was very interesting. Only complaint is that some of the signs were quite weathered and sometimes hard to read. Definitely a gem for Baltimore.
Loved it. Visited at night and was really cool. HOWEVER! They need to change the lightbulbs.
Well kept grounds, easy parking, informative displays
General John stricker is buried there I went to that school
Interesting place, go to the back to see the original grave. Not a lot of info but definitely a landmark! Free admission.
Really neat graveyard outside a beautiful church right in the city. I didn’t realize there are actually two gravestones to see, so we only saw the large marker. It was still neat to see and worth the visit.Others reviewers have stated the area is safe; however, we visited at dusk and were approached by some interesting characters, so I’d recommend visiting during daylight hours.
If you love Poe you must come here!
Super cool history and I never knew he was buried here
It great nice to visit such a historical place with students. A gentleman was kind enough to tell where his original grave was so we got to see both. The students reminisced about the stories they had read which was cool to hear.
Very historic!!! Make sure to visit both burial spots. I think his first burial stone is better than the 2nd.
Went on a rain day, its so gothic, so beautiful in a melancholy romantic way
If youre a fan of Poe, its a great place to visit. Doesnt take up too much time. Id go to the harbor after for drinks and such.
Interesting place, worth a visit
Very clean and easy to get close to grave sites
This was a cool graveyard in the city. They have the history of the cemetery and church throughout.
Wonderful little graveyard with old historical graves.
No entry fee, people do frequent the area so dont expect alone time with Poes markers. Do leave an offering though if you so desire.
Im a huge fan of Poes. Visiting his grave was a dream! Beautiful!
Bagged this cool stop while touring around Baltimore Md
Interesting grave yard on the side of a building. Someone left a bottle of Hennessy next to his grave with a note. Nice!
I try to visit Edgar Allan Poes grave Everytime I pass close to Baltimore. Its pretty easy to get to and convenient to the Greyhound Bus station as well as highways. The cemetery is well kept and beautiful. Not sure who maintains it, but they are wonderful. Its definitely worth visiting if you have the chance. There is a large memorial to Poe at the entrance, but the site of his original grave is in the rear of the cemetery and a bit of a hunt. Wonderful place to stop, think about dark things and visit with Poe.
Beautiful and peaceful. I was fascinated to see the other graves as well. I like that it was easy to find as well.
Was in Baltimore stopped by to see Edgars grave.
Considering the man started the horror genre, this was a cool stop for historical reasons. If your not into history, I would pass.
Interesting for what it is. Don’t miss the original tomb location in the back section behind the church.
Cool little piece of American history.
Wasnt a lot going on, felt kinda dead.
Always a beautiful and historic place to visit. Definitely a visit I recommend when people visit me in MD.
Creepy old cemetery in the middle of the city where Poe and his family is buried. Fun to wander around and look at the old graves and vaults.
Awesome, truly a sight to see a cemetery in the middle of a downtown metro area
Good to remember the past. Westminster hall is a lovely place to visit.
So cool. Church & Historical gravesite smack in Baltimore. Near the VA hospital. Many cool old tombstones & mausoleums to see. Near Poe House museum.
I went by this place at 50 miles an hour Ill give it five stars anyway
I am an enormous fan of Edgar Allan Poe, so this visit was epic for me. It is a quick visit, but is filled with history as many other important figures are buried at the Westminster as well. Don’t miss his previous burial site in the back. Great memorial to the father of mystery and the macabre.
This Cemetary is very accessible and beautiful piece of history. There are famous figures buried here who played significant roles in the American Revolution and other historic battles which was pretty cool to see. As a note the walk is doable, but if you are coming from the pier area, take a scooter or Lyft there because it’s a long incline up hill which will lengthen your walk. Walk back! Trust me. Overall, thank you Westminster Church for this historic site!
This was really interesting. If you get the chance take a look around.
Hard and find and creepy. That means I loved it.
Interesting place to visit, but not much to do. Its cool just to see and take a walk around. Specially growing up a fan of his work, you really just take this place in.
Such an amazing old graveyard. Very creepy and worth the visit. Walk around and see the rest of the place.
Really cool seeing the final resting place of Edgar Allan Poe. Obviously most people come to see his grave but if you have time walk around the cemetery and check out the other historical graves there. I enjoyed reading the well written informational signs talking about the others who are buried there.
Interesting, clean and informative historical cemetery.
Cool to see a little piece of history. I went on a rainy day and it was even better.
This was awesome so many old old graves of prominent people..
Worth a visit to the graveyard to pay homage to the author. This was the prime cemetery in Baltimore before the Westminster church was built there. Lots of other important people burried there that were involved in the Revolution, and also some of the well-known families of the time. Good to wander around.
Beautiful, quiet resting spot for our friend.
Location was breathtaking and truly an ethereal experience. There is parking around the area and the grounds are fairly well maintained. Absolutely worth visiting after the poe house. I was able to take my friend here in the group very like-minded people that were sharing the experience. Hard to imagine this is where the great poet himself resides. In addition one of the forefathers is buried here.
Theres a very rich history. Not sure theres a Halloween your this year. Its in the midst of University of Maryland downtown campus and Some people wed at the chapel.
