A major cultural and Historical Center for the city of Baltimore, Mount Vernon also happens to be a great place to hang out. In addition to the Walters Art Museum, and the Peabody Institution, Mount Vernon is also a stones throw away from the Enoch Pratt Free Library, the Baltimore Basilica, Baltimores very own Pennsylvania Avenue Station, Station North Arts District Collectors Corner comic book store, and plenty of great places to eat, ranging from the usual corporate Giants like Potbellys sandwich shop 2 The Gallery Cafe just across the street from the Walters Art Museum.
The monument is a near 15 minute stop. You can climb to the top for $6 (it is a workout and not for those who are unfit or claustrophobic). The view at the top is nice, but not necessarily amazing. The space can get cramped if there are more than about 3 people in the tower. I wish there was more informational signage about the monument that contained more history of the site. The staff was friendly and welcoming. Note that the black statue of the person on the horse is NOT George Washington, but instead is a separate monument to Lafayette).
The original Washington Monument before the copycats in DC decided they had to have one too. It is the heart of the historic Mount Vernon neighborhood. It offers a glimpse into old elegant America. Fantastic architecture all around. The parks around the monument are the perfect setting for a nice walk or picnic on the lawn. There are benches and bistro tables for small Gatherings of friends. Theres a historic trail that has signs giving you great info on the history of many amazing places in greater Mount Vernon like the first Cathedral built in America.
I really liked this area. Lots of trees for shade, lots of sidewalks and streets that were pretty friendly for pedestrians. It was a little tricky to get around everywhere with a stroller, probably a little tricky for anyone in a wheelchair, because everything is so old, sidewalks and pavers uneven, not everyplace had ramps to access. But I still really enjoyed the area, love the feel of this neighborhood and it was pretty cool seeing all the old statues and stuff.
Pretty, visit if you are in the neighborhood. The tower is closed due to covid I assume. Perrys monument in Ohio looks to be a replica of this but twice the size.
Cool to see we went early in the am so it wasnt crowded
An amazing place to walk around and read the history. Will go back to explore and read more of Baltimores history.
First of its kind for Washington. To go to top u have to pay $6. They only accept cards. No cash. But can only look through windows due to health and safety issues. Lot of other tourist attractions near by. 226 steps to climb. You get 50%discount for history museum with this ticket.
Whats not to love from the original Washington Monument? Always a great kickoff to the Christmas season. And if youre lucky, Morgan State Choir will perform.
The monument was closed... the grounds around were maintained...
What a view! The climb to the top is definitely worth it. The staff was more than helpful and knowledgeable. Make sure to take a stroll around the parks surrounding the monument too. Absolutely stunning .
Baltimore is a beautiful city, very well recommend, love every single place we visited and the Washington monument was one of them
Fun place to visit when flower mart is planned.
Beautiful monument. They recently restored it in 2015 and did an outstanding job. 227 steps to the top! We paid a few bucks to climb, and the views were worth it.
Awesome views from the top! Worth every step!!
Very nice area of Baltimore to walk through
Such an awesome asset to the Mount Vernon neighborhood and the city of Baltimore. It is a treasure to show the history of the past and preserving it so well. The views from above are amazing, you can see to Towson on a clear day. The interactive displays inside are fun and interesting.
Not nearly as tall as I expected and no place to plug in my karaoke machine. This monument killed my chance to be a famous singer. Although the copper roofing is excellent as if installed by god himself. But no karaoke, no stars
It was a little tricky to get around everywhere with a stroller, probably a little tricky for anyone in a …
Climb to the top for spectacular views of Baltimore. Washington Monument is a treasure to the community, especially since the renovation. Be sure to explore the interactive activities in the lobby too.
Bit of a climb to the top, and it can get hot in there - wouldnt want to go on a crowded day. Nice cardinal direction views from the top, but 3/4 of the openings are blocked by glass windows, and you cant walk around outside at all. For $6 its worth the price of admission, but the World Trade Center Top of the World Observation Level has better views.
Impressive 1815 monument, the first such built to George Washington, located in a roundabout called Washington Place, as part of a narrow park that briefly divides the middle of Charles Street.
Great place to get a birds eye view of the city. You can walk all the way up to the top of the monument and look out of the 4 windows to see views to the east, north, west and south. There is no elevator and the stairs can be claustrophobic, so wear walking shoes and prepare for a workout.
No waiting in line. We walked in, had a quick background talk with George about the monument. Great view from the top
I was born here and have lived here most of my life and never been up it until recently. There is a little history exhibit in the base and the docents are helpful. Then you climb the stairs and get a great view of the city. Must have been even more àmazing when it was built and there were no tall buildings around
Beautiful. Great scenery and foliage for those who love taking pics
Nice park area with alittle bit of history
Extremely friendly staff and tech.
Beautiful and historic.
Nice place!
Great park to sit and practice photography
Met a lovely homeless lady that shared her life with me. Magical. And she did not ask for a dime.
As a city resident, I never knew the monument could be opened to the public to go inside! So I was in for a surprise when I went inside and got to climb the historic monument. Anyone with a heart problem may want to take there time as it is a looooong way up, but the view is well worth it at the top. The tickets are cheap as well, so you dont have to worry about hurting your wallet for a short trip.
Fireworks were better last year, but the monument looked better this year
Wonderful setting! Beautiful and quiet park just across the street!
Check this place after sunset. Really a cool view.
Its historical and very good
Altogether lovely visit to DC. Extra bonus of free parking on weekends helps since its normally $2/hr.
The view on a clear day is magnificent. You look down and suddenly those towering spires across the street dont seem so towering anymore!
$6 to get to the top. Beautiful place.
Nice little spot in the middle of Baltimore. Despite appearances, I have always found a nearby parking spot.
Cool place to hangout in Baltimore City for the intelligencia
I love this neighborhood,I live here and its wonderful
It was interesting for being a shirt walk from my hotel. The neighborhood felt safe.
Its out of this world. I loved every moment there.
The staff are friendly and helpful. If you decide to pay the fee, the monument provides one of the best panoramic views of Baltimore. A bit disappointing that you can no longer go outside at the top. You are left looking out through suboptimal plexiglass and a metal gate, but a great view nonetheless. If you have visitors from out of town, I highly recommend this trip, though be warned only 5 people can go to the top at a time. Finally, I would pair this Mt. Vernon gem with a trip to the Maryland Historical Society while youre in the neighborhood, especially since they give a discount if you paid to go to the top of the monument.
Very scenic area. Wish I had time to appreciate the exhibits in the monument. They seemed to be quite good.
Sunny. Relaxing. Beautiful
Nice quiet Park with good seating
In the middle of Mount Vernon area. Check opening hours and tickets beforehand. It is the oldest monument dedicated to George Washington.
Nice staff. Free except the climb to the top.
Only found this by happen stance when visiting the nearby museum. It is a picturesque park and historic monument. You can access the inside the monument for free but have to pay by credit card to climb the stairs. It is recommended to pay online but walk-ins can usually be accommodated. Note the park in the outer circle by the church may have a few homeless laying around - eh, it is Baltimore after all. Here are the year 2019 particulars:Hours of Operation:The Monument is open to the public year round, except Thanksgiving & Christmas Day.• Wed. through Sun. 10AM – 5PM• Open Wed. evenings during the summer for evening events in the parkAdmission to the gallery and digital exhibits is free. Tickets to climb the tower can be purchased online or onsite:• Adults: $6• Children up to age 13: $4
Beautiful structure, really enjoyed sorroundings and the monument view. Unfortunately could not go on the top of the monument as the lift service was closed for indefinite time period.
Love the experience with my children and grand babies
I would HIGHLY suggest whoever does maintenance for the monument replace the light bulbs on the stairs going up to the top ASAP. There were several sections that were pitch black and we had to use our cell phones for light to walk down the narrow spiral stairs. This is a safety concern!
Museums, including the monument are interesting, filled with history and free
Are you curious about 200 years of history? A definitely must place to visit. Learn about Washingtons legacy, time capsules, just a good time learning about the founders of the Great United States of America!
The flower mart is always nice even though its only 1 weekend a year
Great views in four directions
The North Park is where people sit in groups & talk. The south park is where people take pictures when they get married. The West Park is where people walk their dogs and the East Park is the bum park even though it has the coolest waterfall / fountain.Overall its chill.I believe the park is supposed to close at dusk. Also throughout the summer time there are few festivals in and around the park.a
Love historical aspect of the location
Went to the flower mart. I enjoyed it very much. Got plants and goodies.
Baltimore most picturesque neighborhood, history, serenity and great places to eat and drink
Situated in a very pretty square, make sure you see the sights around it!
The climb to the top isnt for everyone, but the view is quite amazing if and when you reach the top
It has a very good atmosphere
Its beautiful history!!
Awesome staff went out of there way to answer questions and made us feel welcome!
I LOVE THIS WONDERFUL, HISTORIC PLACE! BEAUTIFUL
Great way for a holiday.
The first monument dedicated to the memory of our first president, George Washington. One of many reasons Baltimore was once known as Monument City.
Beautiful monument with great views. The staff are very knowledgeable and really seem to enjoy their work. The interactive display is really neat as well.
This is a very important part of Marylands history.
A more accessible and older monument than DC. Great neighborhood. Good people watching. Worth the six dollars to climb. Lots of wedding parties have their official photos taken.
You can go inside and use their very large touch tone computer screens to see and learn about the history of the monument. Its so cool. Great for an hour with the kids or couples or just by yourself.
This is a large, marble monument of George Washington atop a tall column in the center of historic Baltimore. Completed in 1829, it stands at the top of a narrow strip of park dotted with lovely trees, bushes, flowers and other statuery, most notably an equestrian statue of Washingtons trusted Marquis de Lafayette. It is possible to climb the 227 marble steps in the winding staircase at the center of the monument to the top. The staircase is brick-lined and very narrow. At one point, it is a little too dark to find ones foothold. There is a railing available for assistance. Upon reaching the top, the climber is rewarded with excellent views of Baltimore. Sadly, Baltimore does not offer any excellent views and the entire enterprise is at that point called into question. The viewing deck is off limits out of safety concerns, but we may take in views from behind three windows. A fourth opening has had a gate fashioned over it, which allows ventilation, but which also blocks the view. $6 admission fee for adults, children aged 13 to 17 pay $4 and it is free for those 12 and under. Cash not accepted. Receipts can only be e-mailed. No restroom facilities available.
Very cool to see and the surrounding area made it worth looking for parking. A few more homeless people that most are comfortable with but, sadly, to be expected.
Grew up in Baltimore but only recently went to the monument. Well done, but probably only a one time trip. Great views. Great people on site.
Is very quiet around the monument is not great the view in the top but is was ok for 6 $
If you are in Baltimore, this is a must-see. The climb to the top is a little strenuous, but well worth the view. The docents were awesome to talk with and the interactive maps had lots of fun and interesting things to see. The parks around this monument are well worth the time and I would expect them to be really pretty in the Spring when the water features are active.
My favorite place in all of Baltimore
Great historic area. Goth church peabody institute epoch prattle house. Great bus routes too
Washington wasnt know for comedy but his monument is still a great call back.
Great service. Line was too long for us to go to the top during our visit.
Would not have gone had not the lady in my life suggested going. With Kathi it was an amazing evening.
Read your History before you go
Great, inexpensive add to the day.
Great honor to George Washington
Its tall, its monumental, and today it was lit up for Christmas. Neat.
Nice meeting point
Its a historical place to go visit, it a great place to take the whole family. There is so much to see and learn. I recommend for everyone to go at least once, i guarantee you wont be disappointed.
A pretty good city park
Beautiful view of Baltimore from the top of the monument. Great exercise climbing the 225 stairs to the top!
Clean park area, a lot of activities downtown. A great location for wedding photos
Historic and lovely area with great architecture
The statues are amazing. I wish we had come when it was open. I bet when the brazzures are lit this monument is incredible.
This is a rather nice quick stop on a day you have 20-30 minutes to spare. Do check their hours open as this is staffed by volunteers and has limited days / hours. The base inside tour is free and the volunteers are a delight to chat with and they will provide so much history about this monument and the neighborhood around this attraction. To walk up the steps to the top does cost about $6 and is for those with well functioning kneed and hips (NO elevator so if you do walk up then you must also walk down these hundreds of steps). Do talk with the volunteer docents inside the base as this really makes this experience special for you and them.
Awesome! First George Washington memorial in US.
Peabody is next door and a nice little park across the street
