A hidden gem! Parking is a little confusing, but its worth it. The museum is small, but their exhibitions are impressive. Been here twice now, first time was 2 years ago for the Botticelli Exhibition. I cant wait for the upcoming ones!!
This was a wonderful museum for me to have access to when I was a WM student. I remember many years ago (perhaps 2010?) they had a special exhibit featuring a photographer that showed women’s nude bodies of all shapes, sizes, ages, and experiences to celebrate these differences and demonstrate the natural beauty of all women. It was particularly beautiful and memorable for me.
Two rooms of strange modern art. None of the art from the pictures here was on display...
William and Marys little secret. I am one of the lucky students to know about this place since my freshman year! Worth every visit, often times has special collections come for a while.
World class museum and especially good when they host special collections. Free parking by asking for a parking pass at the reception desk. Will soon close for 2 years for rebuilding a much larger facility. I believe that exhibits will be available during the construction at a different venue. I love this place.
Some unique artwork. Complicated for parking. Only half of the museum was open.
Fantastic art on the walls, I think. But Im not sure because it was so crowded I was only able to catch a glimpse. The cards on the wall were informative, but since they were composed of white letters on a dark red background, they were hard to read and then in turn it was hard to look at the art without seeing lines from the text. I hope the intern whose job it was to make these cards will change his or her ways.
Well presented exhibits. Provided the right amount of written context. Nice and quiet but a doscent did volunteer to take us around. Good use of an hour to get a break from the Colonialhistory!
This is a lovely museum with interesting exhibits. Parking is a problem, though. You have to find a space, then go inside to get a parking pass, which isnt obvious your first time there!
Fantastic small museum. The only reason I dock it a star is because its size means that it is limited in what it can display. Free entrance for William and Mary students, which is a nice perk.
We saw the Botticelli exhibition and it was excellent. The museum itself is modern, well kept and the exhibits are well placed.
Great exhibits!
Friendly, personal service
An incredible venue with inspiring work- plus WM students can go for free!
Words cant begin to describe what you can experience in this hidden gem from one exhibit to the next. It is the ultimate small museum, specializing in bringing the Italian masters to America.
Exhibits are nicely set up to allow a great viewing experience.
Well done, but fix the floors downstairs theyre super squeaky
Love it! A great collection of art at a very reasonable price. I highly recommend the guided tours. I learned so much more than I would have on my own. Ive seen both Leonardo Da Vinci here and Botticelli. I cant wait to see the next exhibit.
Great place to learn about the latest cultural changes.
Excellent collection and visiting collections are superb! Most recent was Botticelli. Previously... DaVinci, Michelangelo and Caravaggio.
Very nice museum but. It obvious where to park.
Went for a special event. Other then that there wasnt much to see and parking is the worst!
Amazing collection for such a small building. Poor and misleading advertising on their rotating collections.
First visit was to see the Botticelli collection on loan to the Muscarelle. Wonderful exhibit, multiple docents with flocks of people floating from one to another. You could eavesdrop on the one you liked best from a short distance. Only difficulty was that the overhead recessed ceukubg lights caused reflections on the art so you had to stand a certain angles to see the art clearly without a reflection of light on the painting. With loads of people there the last week of the exhibition, it was often difficult to find that sweet spot without others jumping in front of you until they discovered the problem. Nice detail beside each artwork made it possible to learn about the art and artist even without a docent. Very dark room - dark walls and very high ceilng. Parking lot outside the door. Gallery is in the William and Mary campus, I believe. Google GPS got us there easily, and got us out of Williamsburg easily, too. Merchants Square and Colonial Williamsburg a couple of blocks away, so we had lunch afterwards. Very pleasant afternoon all the way around. Id go to another exhibit there but hope the lighting is addressed.
It was great seeing great Italian art in an intimate setting.
So beautiful. Worth the drive from Norfolk.
Great collection, but crowded due to the interest in the Botticelli exhibit at the time.
Great Exhibition! To be seen only in Williamsburg & then in Boston.
Its pathetic that they dont have a way to let people who cant afford their prices have a reduced rate!!
Fine place to watch a childrens stage play
Since about 2010, this museum has progressed famously.I gave five stars for their exhibitions like Michelanglos architectural drawings, the mysterious Carravaggio, WPA paintings, Matilda of Canossa and the Origins of the Renaissance, and soon to come (Feb 21st) Leonardos drawings for the exhibition on Virtue and Beauty. This little museum is a real find for those either visiting colonial Williamsburg ( youll get a break from the Revolution) or who live closer by and want an interesting destination for a few hours. Since the venue is small, it wont take but one and half hours or so (unless you are like me and could stare all day at one piece of art), but the Muscarelle provides a wonderful respite from daily life with thought-provoking pieces carefully curated by historians like John Spike and his wife Michele Spike ( Matilda of Canossa) .Also upstairs, they have some fantastic Japanese prints drawn from life in the Kabuki theater .I am so happy to be able to visit this museum at a whim and find stimulating material to see and ponder .
Suprising collection of wonderful paintings and prints. Hidden gem.
Small but worth the visit
Nice university museum.
