We did the Cyber Punk room and it was very well thought out and an overall fun experience! Well worth it. Excited to see what else they have!
Went with my husband and a friend to do Samurai Showdown as it was the first time any of us did an escape room. Our game master was very welcoming and friendly. We did fairly well and had a wonderful time together. It goes by faster than you think! And because it was slow that day, my husband and I were able to go right into Massacre which was a little harder but not too bad. Especially because our game master “threw us a bone” ....or several. lol Great experience, great staff, and would love to see how their huge project next door comes together the next time we visit! Best of luck!
Had a great time. Rooms were challenging and well thought out
We only have one room left in this location we haven’t done. Each room is different and challenging. I love that their one room doesn’t do combination locks and the puzzles are a bit different. I’m kind of bummed we’ll be out of rooms here soon
THE BEST ESCAPE ROOM IN WILLIAMSBURG!!!! Be sure to take the time to talk to the young entrepreneur that owns this location!!! Let me be very clear....HE CREATES ALL THE ROOM AND PUZZLES HIMSELF!!!!! This location had 3 or 4 rooms and each were VERY different and unique. My wife and I tried the murder themed one and we escaped with just under 5 mins left. But while in the room, there was NO clock or countdown, there were NO lights, and the only form of communication was a two way radio! The owner said that if we go over the 1 hour, he would call us on the radio and ask if we needed a clue but also said that he usually just lets the customers try to get out of the rooms within a reasonable amount of time. He explained that he wants the customers to have a good experience and has found that if he gives the customers a heads up about the time not being limited to an hour (now be fair and dont plan on spending 3 hours in a room) and hell offer as many clues as the group wishes, then the group typically has a better experience. Try this place out for yourself! The location is a little tricky to find but just call ahead or Google search it and the maps will take you right to the door!
One of the best escape rooms weve been in! The puzzles flowed very logically and were incredibly clever.
LOVED IT! Staff was super welcoming and flexible, the rooms were VERY fun and creative, and you could feel the love put into each handmade setpiece and puzzle. I absolutely reccomend this place to ANYONE!
Well done escape room! We did the massacre room with only two people. We needed a few hints (really about two, the others helped clarify we were on the right track), but all the clues made sense and had a good flow. There was a clue which could be solved sooner if you are extra clever, which was pretty neat. The people working there were nice. My only concern was my poor eyesight in a dimly lit room, but after a while my eyes adjusted and the room got far easier. Recommend 4-6 people for this room, 8 would be fine. More would have helped us, but fortunately we made it out anyways! Ive done a dozen or so, this one did a good job.
First time escape room experience and it was a great time! My brother in law and I were in the area for one night for work and needed something to do on a Tuesday night in February. There are VERY few options after 7:00pm unless you drink or enjoy the bar scene. We called and were able to book an appointment for 7:00 and I know they had an opening at 8:30. We did the Samarai Room which was the easiest. It was just the two of us and we solved it in the nick of time and was a good challenge. It is located in a little bit of an odd area especially if going when its dark out. There is off street parking and plenty of lighting. The guy who was running it (I wish I could remember his name) was very friendly and very helpful explaining everything we needed to know. There are at least five different rooms with various themes and difficulty levels. It really saved us from a boring night.
Lovely staff/owners, great rooms.
My husband and I had a great time I the Samurai Room. It was our first time and it was really neat. We actually didnt. Red any help until about 45 to 50 min in when we were stuck on the last 2 items. They were helpful with the hints and we completed it just as the door unlocked. It was one of their hardest rooms and they were impressed that we completed it as a first time couple when it is designed for up to 8 people.
Clever and Different Than The Rest — We’ve done about a dozen escape rooms and we really enjoyed the Blackbeard’s Treasure room. We found it to be challenging and also novel that we were solving multiple puzzles that contributed to an overarching solution (no spoilers). Most escape rooms are linear and you can compartmentalize the puzzles and move on, this was a little different and challenging at first but made complete sense throughout. Theme was excellent and the mechanics were perfectly logical and very cleverly implemented. Really enjoyed it, nice job Colonial Escape crew!
Great escape room and room master. Went with my significant other and his parents who had never done one. When they had originally picked the most difficult one he offered a better starter one so we switched to that thankfully. The cyber punk room was great and I saw some things I haven’t before!
Rooms with very elaborate stories/multiple puzzles. There is a time limit, but you can tailor the experience/difficulty level to your needs as there is essentially unlimited hints. Everytime we have gone, the employee there is extremely engaging and has amazing customer service skills. He is always willing to show us whats coming next.
Great staff, fun rooms, good times
One of the best escape room experiences Ive had. Puzzles were unique, not too lock-heavy, and themed well
This place was great. Came with a small group of buddies. Their rooms are challenging and very engaging. The customer service is top notch and cant beat the prices. If Im in town again Ill definitely go back
We played 2 rooms at Colonial Escape: Samurai Showdown and Blackbeards Cabin.Samurai: was the easier of the two and what I would recommend for beginners, parties of 2, or groups with kids. There was a fun variety of puzzles and clues, definitely something for every type of solver.Blackbeard: was the more challenging room. I would recommend this for players looking for a challenge, experienced players, or players who prefer more mental than physical puzzles. The room is small, but wonderfully decorated. Every inch really makes you feel like you are in a ships cabin. In general: The customer service is top notch. We chatted with the manager and owner, who are both helpful and friendly. The hint system in the rooms is the best one Ive played with. The rooms do not have timers/traditional timers, some people may not like this, but as someone who slips into competition mode too easily, it allowed me to just play the room and enjoy the discoveries. (Note: you can always request the time as well) Ill for sure return.
Awesome rooms, nice staff, they are very helpful if you get stuck on a puzzle. Very fun! I highly recommend this place! Definitely will be coming back :)
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! My family and I just completed the Samurai Showdown room and had a wonderful time. The room was well thought out, not too easy or too difficult, and was just a lot of fun. The guy working was so great and even showed us the other rooms. Wish we would have had more free time to try out other rooms bc they all looked and sounded great! Keep up the great work folks bc you all have a really great thing going :) We will be back
We chose the pirate room and it was my first time ever doing any type of escape room. It was the most difficult room and was fabulous! The puzzles were very out-of-the-box and so creative. We couldnt have made it out of the room without the hints from the staff who was super friendly and professional. Cant wait to try their other rooms!
Surprisingly busy place during spring break in (MD/VA). My son (10 yr old) and I took advantage of the groupon and had the 8:30 booking of Samurai. We got paired with a family from NoVa who had a similar aged son who played 3 times and adults/sister who were newbies. Ive played extensively and so has my son. 6 makes it pretty crowded but everyone had input which was good. We solved the room at 40 minutes. Room was laid out well, rules were given succinctly and props were very simple but effective. Our operator Will is exceptional in covering key points to do/not do without being longwinded, and his friendliness was appreciated. Room decoration/ambiance was decent, and slight music background was appreciated. It was a bit too dark for my taste with my slightly failing eyesight (mid 40s), and if I didnt occasionally use my own flashlight or the other father didnt have his cell phone light, we wouldnt have been able to differentiate or read many of the small letters/dimly lit colors which look the same in the dark. Some of the props could use some fixing to the correct colors, but it was enjoyable. There was no tech in the room which was nice, a lot of the type of clues are old hat for many of us experienced folks, but the usage of a few commonly used methods did hang us up for a bit. The groupon rate made this a great deal and even at $25 I would consider it $ well spent. If time allows, Ill be back tomorrow for Blackbeard at which time Ill update this review again.Played Blackbeard with just me and a ten year old. We needed help, a modest amount of it. Lol. A few assumptions just werent jumping out at me. This is definitely a tougher room and does better with more people. Id say about three highly experienced, four moderate is a good number in this smaller room. This way everyone is working on other things or able to switch if stumped. I wouldnt suggest this for beginners at all.Well thought out room, great decorations and attention to detail shows. Talked to the owner (who operated) in depth who clearly takes great pride in his work which is a welcome change from some business only oriented owners. For full disclosure, I work and design rooms at an escape game company (not this one)
We (the 5 of us) did the pirate room and had a blast! We were a little nervous doing the hardest room for our first escape room ever but it was definitely worth it. They give an unlimited amount of hints so that was helpful with a few of the puzzles. Will was great, personable, and very informative. We managed to finish just in time and then Will explained the room to us and gave us a sneak peek of the other rooms which looked just as fun. Were only here for a few days but if we were here for longer we would totally go back and do another room.
The pirate room was quite fun and challenging. Decor and music helped set mood very well also! Shame to hear the room will be getting changed up, but I look forward to seeing whats next!
My family and I (4 total) had a wonderful time! I have done several escape rooms all over the country, and this establishment has had some of the best! We completed (and successfully escaped from) all three rooms back to back (which they kindly gave us a discount for): Massacre, Blackbeards Cabin, and Samurai Showdown. Each one was unique and challenging, and kept very close to their own theme, which I appreciated. Each incorporated well-thought-out puzzles that led to the next part of the room. That isnt to say each room was linear; some had parts where people could split up and complete different tasks. If I were to recommend one room, I would say Blackbeards cabin was my favorite. I enjoyed each puzzle, and the props/puzzles were very appropriate for the theme of the room. It was the most challenging of the three, but that isnt to say a beginner cant solve it.Overall, I would highly recommend this establishment to everyone, tourists and locals alike. If and when they release new rooms, we will be sure to try them out!
Extremely fun and challenging! We solved the blackbeards cabin room! Lots of teamwork and puzzle solving. Our host was friendly and helpful. I would recommend it to anyone!
Challenging and fun group activity! Staff was exceptional. Will definitely be going back.
Our large family is visiting Williamsburg,VA for the holidays and booked a large party for this escape room. The guys helping us were very accommodating and friendly. Our group included 24 people, ranging in age from 3 to 62. We rented it for two hours and they made sure that each group had the opportunity to complete two rooms, even when they were over on time. Such a fun evening of family fun. Thank you Colonial Escape Room!
I have NEVER had an issue in here and would give them more than 5 stars if possible. Ive done all of the rooms available at this location. The hosts are great from start to finish, even though they arent in the room with you they still can see everything you are doing and are more than willing to help you when you get stuck. I would highly recommend, you can either go to Groupon and get a coupon or you can sign up for their newsletter each month and they send out a riddle and if you get it right you get 50% off for everyone in your group.
Just finished the Blackbeard’s Cabin and it was great! We finished just in time and had a group of 5. If you like challenging rooms give this one a try. Also the owner was there today and was a great host. My group was only in town for the day and he gave us some sneak peeks to the other rooms before we left. Cool owner, great rooms, and fair price for the experience. Definitely recommend!
It was a great place to have some family and friend fun. You might have to think a little bit, but I guess thats part of the game. Our goal is to do all the rooms available. So we will see you guys soon....
Absolutely amazing and original escape rooms at a great price
Had a great time doing the Blackbeard room. Every room is so well decorated and thematic. Owner was incredibly personable! You wont want to miss out!
We came here with our family over the holidays and it was super fun! We did the Japanese room and really enjoyed it. Cant wait to go try another room!
We had a blast with the Blackbeard themed room. We rented the whole room, because our group consisted of four adults, and three kids under six years old. Everyone (except the 9 month old) was able to contribute to solving the room. The variety of riddles and puzzles involved was great, as each of the adults have different personalities and thinking styles, so we each had something to work on and we were not getting in the way of each other. Would do another room again next time we are in town.
What a wonderful way to spend a weekend! My husband and I have escaped twice now and both rooms were really fun. We enjoyed how the two that we tried were different levels of difficulty. Both were a challenge to a us because this was the first time we tried an escape room. The time and work put into these rooms are evident from the moment you step in. I dont want to give away too much detail or clues. The Bed and Breakfast room would be a great place to start for a brand new first timer. We were able to solve it just under an hour with 5 people. We also did the Pirate themed room (this was our first room) and it was just the two of us.. my hubby and I finished the room but definitely more challenging, puzzle solving skills needed (which I find fun) but since this was our first ever room we didnt know what we were doing until about halfway in.. very detailed and fun. You will love Colonial Escape. They are still new and growing with thoughts of two more rooms coming. We cannot wait to see what they have next!
Fun place. Interesting room. Nice staff.
Great time as always when me and family enjoy a night. Staff is awesome. Thanks Will and to all the staff
I did the pirate themed escape room and had a lot of fun. It was my first escape room and I really enjoyed the experience. I did it with 5 other people, 4 of which have done several rooms. They said the pirate room was on the harder side. We managed to do well and finish it. We either tied or slightly beat the fastest time. We had 4 or 5 engineers and still found the puzzles to be interesting. It was a good mix of analytical puzzles and more abstract ones. We found out one, that we solved very analytically, could be solved graphically which I thought was an interesting twist. One puzzle in particular combined several separate things together that was very satisfying to solve. Take notes in the pirate room!I really enjoyed it and it makes me want to try more escape rooms.
The staff is super kind and the room we did was so fun! Definitely a fun experience would do again!!
The place was amazing we did the massacre room and it was pretty challenging. Plan to go back and try the other rooms.
We had an absolute blast!!! Wilson was amazing! He had us laughing before we went in the room and after we came out of the room. I would definitely recommend this to anyone and everyone. You wont regret it!! We went through the samurai room. We didnt want to ask for help but unfortunately we ended up needing it at the end.......Take the whole family for an amazing adventure!!
A really great experience. The rooms are unique and a very rewarding challenge. We did the Blackbeard room and it was a unique experience after doing dozens of similar feeling escape rooms.
Im an escape room fanatic and visited several on the East Coast. Colonial Escape has a nice establishment tucked in commercial area, which can be hard to find at night. The worker was nice and the place was clean. We did the Massacre room with six people, dim light and with scary decorations. It wasnt challenging to me, but whats worth it for those we introduce the escape room for the first time.We did the Blackbeards cabin, which was much more challenging. I thought this room has more thought out and stuck with the decorations. It was more logic base and the set-up puzzles. I enjoyed this room because the room was more than I expected - We had five engineers in a room, and me as an artist. It was the perfect combination for the room. I recommended it for those looking for a challenge. My only critique is that I wish the puzzles were more spread out than having most in one location. However, my friends and I had an awesome time. We had to new people who never experienced an Escape Room before, and they had a positive experience and wanting for more.Great job, Colonial Escape.
My family and I did the Massacre one and it was awesome! Very cool how you had to “earn light” and the room was super well done. Will was great and we were able to complete the room with minimal hints. After we were done Will took us to see the other 2 rooms they have and we will definitely be checking them out next time we are in town.
Me and my girlfriend were here on vacation and gave this place a go off of the good ratings. We did the massacre room and man, it was fun, creepy, eerie, hard, and exciting all in one! The puzzles were well thought out and the room was very well designed. We didnt make it out but if we had more than the two of us, Im sure we could have gotten out. Best escape room Ive been to!
First escape room ever and it was a wonderful experience. Would recommend to anyone who is looking for a challenging but exciting puzzle. The owner is also awesome.
Friendly staff. My wife and I played Massacre. It was just us in the game as it was early afternoon. We didnt make the hour time limit, but they were nice enough to let us finish. We will return again to play the other rooms. We have also played at their other location the Speakeasy Escape Room in Hampton.
I went as part of a vacation with my friends, and Colonial Escape was so much fun we went back the next night. The first night we did the Massacre room, which was very eerie and VERY fun. Then the next night we did Blackbeards room, which was quite the challenge. I had done an escape room before, but it was no where near as fun and clever as these, and you can definitely see the time and detail they put into each of the rooms. I highly recommend.
The pirate room is no joke, but very fun. They even gave us more time for free to solve it and we were still unsuccessful. It will humble you for sure and we had a great experience.
We had a fun time.. the guys running it were great .. the room was very well decorated.. it was very hard to solve but a lot of cool clues.. I would definitely go again
We did the dark murder room one and were able to complete it with minimal help. It was a lot of fun! we got to look into the other 2 rooms which also looked great. I would highly recommend this to anyone!
Ton of fun, tough puzzles. Thank the Lord for helpful hints from the highly personable staff.
First time going tonight with my boyfriend and we had so much fun! If your an anime fan try the samurai room! It was so much fun! It was just the two of us and we had a blast! Really puts your mind and your communication to the test! Staff was very friendly and accommodating! We will definitely be going back!
So much fun! Friendly staff
My boyfriend and I love coming here when we feel like going on an “adventurous” date. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and the rooms are well decorated, fun, and challenging. We’ve done every room they currently have and have solved 2/3. We are looking forward to solving more rooms as they become available.
We had a good time solving the black beard room.
This place is awesome, lots of fun and very nice staff
My family and I have been through two of their rooms. They are a lot of fun, with well designed, creative challenges. Anyone who enjoys puzzles and mysteries, will enjoy these escape rooms. We cant wait to go back again!
It was very fun and the staff was really nice. My only issue was that some of the equipment in our room wasnt working properly which made us take significantly longer trying to complete the room. Even with the issues it was so much fun. Ive never been in an escape room where you have to earn light before so it was really cool and Id definitely go back.
Really fun! Great for first timers as they give unlimited clues.
Such a fun experience! Wilson was such a great help with giving us clues and talking about the escape room.
We had a great time! The Kill Room was scary but super fun experience!
Absolutely enjoyed the visit there. Less crowded. This was our first time to an escape room. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Gave some extra time to solve the puzzle.
We had so much fun doing the Samuri room at this place. It was perfect for about 4 people. Great place!
We got an incredible deal from Groupon, which worked out great for my friends and I. I have done quite a lot of Escape Rooms but I thoroughly enjoyed the Massacre room and my experience at Colonial Escape! There is so much vivid detail in the rooms and very clevver clues located around the room. The employees were really kind! Which was great considering theres endless hints, which I could see could get annoying after a while, but they are so helpful with everything! Plus, its very conveniently located right off of 64 with tons of parking. We really enjoyed our experience and plan to come back!
Had a great time, especially since we managed to get it solved!
Just had a great time solving a room! And Wilson made it fun, but still challenging.
I LOVED IT!!! I had so much fun
Had a great time solving the puzzles, very fun
We got this as a Christmas present. Scheduled it for today and had a wonderful time. The entire family enjoyed themselves. We were not successful but that didnt matter! Wonderful experience!
Great price and great service. Very fun for the whole group.
Had so much fun!!!! My helper Wilson was so nice and such a big help! Most definitely gonna go again!
This was pretty fun. Our office did it as a team building day. We did the pirate room. I would recommend it.
While this is still a new and developing escape room its definitely worth it! I would consider myself an escape room veteran but even at that the room we did (black beards cabin) was very fun and challenging. What I enjoyed about this establishment over some others is that its approach is a bit different to what you normally see. Its very thematic and actually makes you think and apply knowledge more than what you are used to in escape rooms. With more rooms being added it will definitely be a place I will be returning too. Also the owner Alan is a wonderful personable guy that was extremely helpful and dedicated to his business. Check this place out!!!
We recently found this place and decided to book an expierence. For our first time we are very happy. The rooms are small and the two themes we have done so far are fairly difficult but not too difficult where you want to give up. The guy who works there is very easy to talk to and they offer hints if you are stuck. We highly recommend this if you are looking for something different or unique to experience.
I came to Williamsburg with some friends and this ended up being the best part of our trip. I had never done one before, but some of my other friends had and we were all floored by the detail that went into the first room. We ended up coming back the second night because that is how fun this was! Do it! Do the escape rooms! Plus they have candy in the waiting room.
Colonial Escape was an awesome experience. They really do a great job on the decor of the room and the puzzles. We did Blackbeards Cabin which was all decked out with wood on the walls to look like youre in a ships cabin. A definite must for a Williamsburg trip!
Great activity with friends!
My friend and I booked Blackbeards Cabin and it turned out to be just the two of us. The theming of the room was great; it really felt like we were in a ship with the wood planks on the walls. The puzzles had us working hard but we managed to figure them out. Its obvious that the owner, Alan, has put a lot of thought into the room.We were both really impressed with the place and look forward to trying out the other rooms.
I took my parents to try an escape room for the first time. We did the Massacre room. We really enjoyed it. I have done some before and this was by far the best place Ive been to.
We had a freakin blast! We did the easiest room because we are newbies, and it was still a challenge! We did have to ask for help a few times. But it was so fun. The hour flew by. The lady who I guess coordinated it was so nice. Also you can tell she loves making the puzzles because after she was happy to sit and tell us about how they come up with them and what not. The only thing, Ive seen at other Escape rooms where they take pics at the end, and this was not offered. I wish it were. Wed pay for something like that.
Sooo much fun! Staff was friendly & accommodated our large group. Would definitely recommend!
Ive done two other escape rooms previously, the first one really set the bar high, the second was very underwhelming. At Colonial Escape Room, I did Massacre with my girlfriend and we thought it was very well done. We escaped with about 1 minute left according to staff. Not as fancy as some, but very well put together with an amazing atmosphere. I wish we had time to do the rest of the rooms. A great experience overall, even if I hadnt used the Groupon discount, I would have felt that it was well worth the money. One thing I like about other escape rooms is that attempts are timed and they have leaderboards. Im torn about the room not having a timer in it. I like knowing how much time has gone by without having to radio in to ask, but I also think having a timer in the room would have taken away from the creepy ambience.Other escape rooms also make a bigger deal about people escaping. They take pictures to post on social media, offer special merchandise, or give discounts on future bookings. Its a great way to make additional business and spread the word. These rooms are well done and Im surprised there werent more customers.Overall, my girlfriend and I had a great time and we definitely hope to try out another room as soon as were back in the area!
We did Blackbeards Cabin, solved it in 52 minutes! Very well done, challenging but also rational features. Highly recommend.
My boyfriend and I did Blackbeards cabin while we were visiting Williamsburg. The owner and the other staff member were super nice and even let us peek at one of the rooms we didnt do. The room was challenging, but logical and we both had a lot of fun. The next time we are down there we are definitely visiting them again.
We tried to plunder Blackbeards treasure chest and came up a bit short! What a great escape room. It is the first one we havent beat in a while. It was a great challenge for two people. We talked with the owner(?) for a while afterwards; he is very interested in giving his customers an excellent experience and continuously updating rooms based on feedback. He let us peek at the other rooms and they looked awesome as well. You must try this escape room.
This place was great and very challenging. The attendant was very helpful and pleasant. I highly recommend checking it out.
I liked the decorations and the staff was great. We did the Blackbeard puzzle with another couple. The puzzles were challenging but I agree that it didnt have a solid story or cohesive feel to the challenges. Within the first few minutes we had everything out and knew the end goal. Just had to figure out how all the clues went together for clue 1 = puzzle 1. I would suggest as well that there be some trinket for the winners and a small conciliatory prize for the ones who dont finish one time. That way the final result of, Hey you won!! and still have 10 min......well, thank you I appreciate it and yall did really well, wouldnt feel as awkward.
Staff was absolutely fantastic.Ive done over a dozen escape rooms; theyre one of my favorite activities. This one, however, was more frustrating than enjoyable. I LOVE a challenge. Most Escape Rooms require the use i creativity and logic to move from one clue to the next, often reverting back to the previous clues and information to answer the next puzzle in order to move forward. This one required *very* little creative thinking. It was all numbers and math oriented. For some people, thats awesome and works out well. However, Ive never been any good with math. Im great with actual puzzles, but if you sit me down to do an algebra problem, then Ill be lost in the dark. This room (Blackbeards) required a lot of work on pencil and paper, and not a lot of actually digging around and finding things. It felt like more of a homework assignment than something that Id pay $25 to do. We got out of the room, but not without having to ask for a LOT of clues. There were four big puzzles you had to solve in the room in order to get out. It didnt feel particularly cohesive and it wasnt a fun experience, in my opinion. Id like to maybe try one of their other rooms, but I was so frustrated by this room... I dont see myself spending my money to come back and solve a bunch of different math problems again. The three stars are for the staff; they were kind and wonderful.
It was awesome! We had so much fun! Definitely gonna have to do another one
First time in the scene. Simple registration, showed up and started running! Location is off the path a bit but a good challenge for the four of us. Looking forward to seeing the other rooms and challenges!
We had an amazing time. The host was very friendly and accommodating to our party.
Played this game for a friends birthday. It was fun and challenging. I had a great time with awesome friends.
Had an awesome time here with my family! It was our first escape room experience and it definitely set the the caliber high! We solved the room right at the end of the 60th minute, it was a fun and challenging experience. The owner was great and very personable, we couldnt believe he only opened up a month ago! We would all definitely go again to try and solve the other rooms, and we recommend anyone to try this place out!
