I have not played there for 20 years. The golf course is a good shape. I enjoy the up and down. It is definitely a resort course. A few of my wayward drive got a nice friendly bounce back into the fairway. Greens are very fair but you have to putt with the mountains in mind. Otherwise you might get fooled with what is in front of you. We will be back.
Slowest round of golf I have ever experienced. And that was due more to how many people they allowed on rather than groups of slow players. We were told 5 hours is standard for the Palmer course. The course itself was in great shape if you are ok with that.
The Palmer course offers several beautiful and scenic holes with a nice range and level I f difficulty. Our group really enjoyed the course and the staffs hospitality. Will play it again.
The golf is fantastic, the starter( coach) is worth the trip.He treats everyone like your his long lost best friend. The rest of the staff was on point. Our stay both times were great. The only thing needed in the hotel complex is a liquor store.Great. Place....
I spent 4 days on a golf trip and had a great time. Good lodging and challenging courses.
Great experience at both Jones & Palmer courses ... Will schedule another outing again next year back at Oglebay!!
The course was in good shape for how wet it was. You HAVE to converse with Coach hes a great guy.
Nice course, it was in good shape, most of the leaves were blown off
Weve been coming here for 4 or 5 years consecutively for a large golf outing (10-12 people for a weekend). Awesome staff and great amenities at the pro shop, good food at the turn and always great advice from Coach at the starter box. Courses are well balanced and can be difficult for even experienced golfers. Cant beat the views!
The Jones golf course was absolutely beautiful. Very well maintained and fun course. Drove from Latrobe, PA to play. I will definitely be back.
The Palmer course is awesome. Nice test of golfing skills. My only concern was the pro shop. When I made the tee times, they told me the cost was $71 per player. When I arrived they charge me $79 per person. My son in law paid right after I did and they charged him $86. We will play it again, because the course is so good.
Italian wrap was great and the customer service is amazing, way to go to them.Thank you
I was disappointed, we went to pay and we handed the gentleman a $20 he put it in the register and said thanks for the donation, never gave us a chance to say what ar wanted to donated. I was confused by the way it is set up, you have main roads going through it. They only thing I did like was the shop with the trees and Santa.
Two great courses to play. Rooms at Wilson Lodge were very nice.
Palmer course is one of the best in the valley. Be sure to take advantage of the twilight rate that starts at 3pm
Great getaway for some golf and fun in the sun! Very scenic!
I played the Palmer course. 5 tee boxes should make it playable for most but, that and fairly generous fairways didnt keep it from being a 5 hour round on a Thursday. Its hilly. Greens are large with different levels and slopes. Its not a course to just slop it around. If you cant elevate a mid to short iron, play someplace else. Very good condition for mid August. Greens true and medium speed but watch downhill putts. Only complaint was speed of play.
Great first day of golf!
This place is a pretty decent mid range golf resort. The courses, one designed by Robert Jones and one designed by Mr Palmer himself, are both challenging and well maintained. This is a great Golf Trip or Bachelor party designation.I recommend the Bloody Mary from the bar. Very good stuff. They used to use fresh horsey but now hey just use a mix. Still good though. Also, watch for the paw paw on the left side of the 1st hole. The guy in the picture made an 8 from there.
Two great courses designed by Arnold Palmer and the other by Robert Trent Jones. Usually well maintained. State park lodge is right down the road and has good prices. Can also buy golf and lodge packages for cheap.
One of the nicest golf courses I have ever played. Great staff that is very friendly and helpful to new customers. Give this place a try and enjoy it as we did with our five year old. A day our son will never forget. We let him play some shots without slowing play and he felt like a king. Thank you
Two championship courses out of the same clubhouse. One a Robert Trent Jones design and the other designed by the King Arnold Palmer. Affordable cabins right next store.
Gorgeous up here. Love driving the hills, absolutely breathtaking.
The food in the clubhouse, great! Ahh!the weather! a little inclement for golf...maybe next time...
If you like a challenging round of golf this is for you. Beautiful West Virginia countryside and lots of hills . Great golf
Food was delicious. Trouble with the heat, but the fire was great!!
The lights were wonderful to see and its an easy one day trip from Central, Ohio.
The Jones and Palmer courses are in good (not great) shape and pretty challenging. The Crispin course is in need of some major repairs!!
Great golf course at a decent price.
Great nice staff
The Palmer Course was fantastic. The club didnt seem prepared for the tournament. Confusion of carts, paid for range balls when its included, awards banquet area wasnt large enough for all to have a seat for lunch. Would like a raincheck for practice round that was rained out.
Course was in good shape everything was manicure nice Greens Road really good
Great palace for a group. 8 bedroom cottages are amazing. Good golf value in early season
Fun, fun, fun. Its also an amazing view of the mountains and view of people peacefully playing golf from cabins.
Probably the worst fairways, Jones Course, Ive ever seen on a Pro Course. On tee shots we actually tried to avoid hitting the fairway on most holes so we could hit off grass for the second shot. The course itself has pretty good greens and beautiful scenery but for the price you would expect better play conditions over all. I dont see myself playing this course again until the conditions are better. Save your money.
Such a beautiful course. The staff goes above and beyond to be sure that everything on the course is perfect.
I went for the Christmas light show and it was beautiful. My kids loved it and so did I. It was all free and they ask if you would like to donate. If you do you get an all season pass
Its a little hilly but open and long
Worst golf course I have ever played. The course has no drains and if you plan on playing bring 2 dozen balls because 90% of the time your ball will plug and you cant find it. Also most of the time its cart path only and it makes for a long day hiking back and forth to the cart. Would not recommend, and suggest finding another place for your day off golf!
Really great. Didnt want to leave. Lady at the pro shop a bit snippy though. She kept trying to get me to take the Jones course instead of the palmer course. Other than that, fantastic:-)
Speidel golf is a very nice facility with 2 sets of 18 holes...Jones and Palmer. Jones is a bit older w a more classic design....Ive played it 4 times usually in the Spring and its always wet...hilly but playable...sight lines are good..greens are big but slopy. Palmer is a newer design with more bunkering and modern sight lines and fairway and green structures. The staff is very accommodating and two other nearby courses(18 hole Crispin, and a par 3 course as well) make this a wonderful golf stay for groups. Stick to your tee times though as the starter is notoriously tough.
I played both courses this past weekend. Unfortunately the Jones course had burnout due to irrigation problems and the fairways were a mess. The greens were fine. Oglebay sent an email prior to our group playing, telling us about this and we decided to play anyway. The Palmer course which is a great design was showing signs of heavy wear some of this may be because of the weather this year and maybe some were from extra play from people switching to Palmer from the Jones course. I would suggest skipping the Jones course this year and realize Palmer is a bit beat up. The Palmer greens were also very good. I gave this 3 stars because the Palmer course is still a nice track and the staff was very helpful and accommodating.
Didnt get to play the courses this time, but they are a real treat for the casual golfer. The pro shop has lots of Oglebay items to make your visit more memorable.
Very nice golf courses. The Palmer course is well conditioned and challenging. The Jones course is in good shape as well but much quirkier. There are a couple holes that require right angle doglegs. The grille is good with a nice breakfast sandwich and lunch options, as well as some good local beers.
Update: My son and I played the Jones, Palmer and Crispin course May 21-22, 2019. The Jones course was in the best shape Ive ever seen it in. The new bent grass took well from last falls planting and the amount of grounds crew seen working hard was impressive. My initial review was a 2 star based on last falls experience and I felt compelled to update my review based on my recent experience. Keep it up Speidel...Course is on a better track!Been coming here annually for over 10 years. The Jones course was a total disappointment. I know they had water issues that escalated the unplayable fairway issues. But we have seen the fairways deteriorating over the past few years. Not just recently. Why are you charging the same rate for a substandard course? Sure wish someone would of told us Jones course was virtually unplayable. Putting signs in he carts and at the starter box is a little to late...Don’t you think? We were scheduled to play Jones 3 times for the week. Due to conditions, only played one time.We will still rent the cabin next year but will likely play more local courses. Better experience and half the price at nearby Highland Springs and Indian Run. Great courses, good conditions and half the price. We want Speidel to succeed. But not on a good track from our experience over the past couple of years. Hoping it gets better...
We had a nice time.
Beautiful course...and alot.of fun..
Nice place, good Christmas lights display
Perhaps I just expected a higher end golf course. It has many rolling hills, making for difficult lies. Given all the rain this summer, found many parts of the fairways in need of repair. Greens were good and true.
First time there. Great place!
Excellent service. Plus the grill here has great food reasonably priced
The golf course is breathtaking! I played the Jones Design course which was a nice and yet challenging 9 hole golf course. The staff was great and treated me like I was the most important part of their day. I asked about club rentals and they had 2 options where most courses only have 1 and you get what you get, The cart had plenty of power to get me up those mountains. If you play in the late fall season (I played October 21st) the colors of the trees is beyond amazing. The cart paths are black-topped and the GPS and hole descriptions on the screen in the cart help an out-of-state person play the course with ease. In Wisconsin, you dont get these kind of views while playing golf. The prices were very reasonable. If I were to ever return this would be the 1st place I would call without a doubt!
Pricey but courteous.
Challenging courses but lots of fun!
Very much the place to eat relaxing atmosphere great time enjoyed myself
Played the Palmer Course and it was in great shape. The greens were rolling at a good speed.
I live within 6 miles of Oglebay. Played the back nine and found the fairways in horrible condition. Lots of dead areas and hazards right in the middle of the fairways. They charge $22.00 for nine and this is twilight rates. Really? The only reason I played here today was to accommodate a local friend. He couldnt believe the terrible course conditions. The scenery is nice but the course is DEFINITELY not worth the prices they charge.
Enjoyed the light show.. Well worth the wait and the drive..
Played here for many years the course conditions used to be better and then after Oglebay was bought and no longer gave free golf to employees and screwed a bunch of stuff up the course conditions went downhill, it’s always been s nice course just used to be better now it’s all about saving money and budgeting
Beautiful scenic golf course
Staff and course is nice.
2 great courses and cottages on site!It made for a really fun golf weekend for all the guys!
Great golf course
Good golf courses, challenging, beautiful, fun. Welove talking to coach. The pro shop is just okay, food is better than most golf courses (but summer shandy is not a craft beer). Ill be back sometime.
We had a coupon for golf but paid for a cart for 18 holes. I understand this. However cart rental for 18 holes was 48 bucks.... outrageous.
Jones course was in terrible shape. Fairways were completely burned out. Not one good fairway. Greens were shaggy.
Nice course, a great West Virginia type course
Beautiful
Oglebay Resort is home to the Speidel Golf Club, rated 4-1/2 stars, which comprises the resorts top two 18-hole championship golf courses, the Arnold Palmer designed Klieves course and the Robert Trent Jones Sr Speidel course. This tree-lined and open parkland layout provides a wonderful test for your all-round game, with many attractive, skilfully crafted and challenging holes to enjoy. A must play if you are in the area.
Maybe not what it once was, but still pretty good. Staff is very attentive and willing to make your experience a good one.
Great golf courses
Awesome golf course and view
The course was in great condition. However its ridiculously hilly and doesnt have much drama in it. Feels too open, too straight forward. Also, fairly expensive for what it is.
Awesome Palmer golf course. Good good at reasonable prices. Great staff.
Its coo
Restraunt and bar closed. Just used restroom. Light display was ok
Haves a every nice Christmas lights for everything to see and enjoy
A nice place for a quick lunch with good views.
NiceFriendlyWill be back!!!
Beautiful place, everyone should check out the Christmas lights!
Very nice course. Thank you WVHTA for the great scramble.
Great course. Greens very fast and pin placement challenging. Would love to play again.
Its been a while since I played here and cant wait to go back
The set up for the driving tour isnt really well planned! It was vey confusing, we wasted half the trip just trying to figure out directions!
Went for the festival of the lights. Place is gorgeous
Was very busy because of the holiday season
I played the Palmer Course and the greens were super fast the rough is very rough and its a tough course but its well worth playing
Courses are in pretty bad shape but still had fun. COACH is an asset to that place.
Fairway grass has problems (wet wilt). Greens are fine.
We played the Palmer course and it was very nice and challenging. I recommend playing the course.
