A hidden gem, largest collection of preserved effigy mounds in the state, I believe. When we would go here when I was a kid, there were signs by each mound clarifying the shape and meaning. Now that is all concentrated at the pavilion near the entrance, so be sure to stop there first to understand what youre seeing.
A simply amazing adventure! Picnicked under the beautiful pavilion and were stunned by the surrounding museum quality interpretative signage which answered many of our questions regarding the Mound Builders. It is apparent by the design of the pavilion, rooftop solar panels, and central diorama of existing and destroyed effigy mounds that programs are presented within. Wish the schedule of presentations was posted.Commendations to Washington County!! This park has all the makings of a destination park. Our major wish is that small signage be placed by each effigy mound to give visitors a bit more insight as to what they are looking at.
Its nice there but there is a serious lack of information. There are no brochures or even signs giving any information on the history of the property or age of the mounds. Im sure people would like to know more about the lifestyles of the people who created them and the reason why. And there is no bathroom there. The county should at lease put a portajon there.
A short very educational and beautiful journey. Be with friends, family, school trips, or just to get your mind right.
Great hike. About 1/2 Mile nice trails.
I love this place! Memories but its changed so much from the 70s
Love this place for hiking trails
I was really looking forward to seeing the effigy mounds and learning more about them. They have a pavillion with the promise of lots of info, but it uses push buttons and speakers - none of which worked. This is an unattended park, so youre on your own. Such a treasure to have this history right here (circa 600-1300 AD). Too bad we cant fund it enough to keep it up...
I ( we ) have been coming here for years. From the old late 90s when the parks old trails would wind around the mounds. Now with the new info area it is still great. Highly recomend a looksee.
Really cool park, nice hiking. Clean trails and tons of history! Highly recommend it.
Wonderful short walk on a web of trails to view and learn about Wisconsins indigenous history of artistic burial mounds.
Love Lizard Mound. Hate the moving and disturbing of the mounds. It would be nice if the county consulted with Native experts primarily. These artifacts deserve respect.
Cool park with lots of fascinating history! We visited on a beautiful Friday afternoon and stayed for an hour. Not a single visitor besides us. Shame it is under appreciated.
A hidden jam, nice place for a walk.
Really pretty park and educational! Dogs are allowed, but need to be leashed at all times. Love seeing all the different mounds!
Lots of poison ivy. Mounds kinda overgrown...couldnt see them real well. But its peaceful and clean.
Cool, and free. Very well maintained and informative. Had a good time on a date.
I have gone many times to Lizard Mound Park and have always loved the huge trees which gave it a feeling of a natural cathedral. I went today and was horrified to see all the trees being removed. I understand the intended idea-make it clear as it once was when the native peoples made the mounds-but we have so few wooded areas left. I feel the lack of tree cover makes the mounds seem smaller and less important. I cant go back, it is too difficult to view the bare mounds.
There is lots of knowledge at the parts
I love this park. It is small but nice. The signs are very informative and its a nice place to walk the dogs!
The trails are good. The parking is great. The mounds are very interesting.
Good examples of burial mounds, well tended paths, map handouts available. Good wildlife spotting too, as well as May Apples.
They have improved it (with the help on native smerican cooperation.)The 8 interpretive recordings are sometimes repetative though.
Not very well maintained. Mounds are over grown, hard to locate.
Awesome
Nice park
