The park itself is designed well and the staff were friendly to me. The fountain area was lovely. Theres a thought provoking sculpture arrangement set in the woods behind it called The Girls by a Polish artist which was probably my favorite installation. Ive put some pictures below of some more of the best in my opinion. The only complaint I could make is the low standard of quality for a piece to make it on display here. But that speaks more to the state of modern art than the gallery.
Beautiful landscaping with amazing fountain that helps you escape the cith noise of DC! Wonderful place to spend an afternoon watching the changing light bring new underatanding of the phenomenon of sculpture outdoors. Thanks to all, especially the many essential workers who keep it so beautiful and open to be enjoyed by any who have the time to watch and wonder. Delicious food available or bring your own sandwich and be amazed!
Beautiful garden and a great way to meet up with friends in a time of corona! You can enter and use the restrooms for free. Youre also allowed to bring a blanket and sit on the grass or take advantage of the benches provided.
Beautiful space. The fountain is wonderful.***BE AWARE THE SQUIRRELS BITE***They will climb on your lap to steal food.***Do not feed the squirrels***
Beautiful garden and sculptures. The fountain in the center is incredibly tranquil and has plenty of comfortable shaded areas to sit and relax.
The National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden offers a year-round enjoyment to the viewing public outside the confines of a building. This gallery of art is the only kind in the National Mall in Washington, DC. Apart from the flowering trees and shrubs that decorate the garden, visitors will get a chance to rest and reflect on the works on display in the 6.1-acre area. And of course, there is a ice skating rink in the middle of the garden and a Pavilion Cafe that offers year-round cafe service!Although the garden is in the open, it is enclosed by a metal fence. Thus, there are opening and closing hours enforced to visitors.Note: You are not allowed to touch the works of art. On Fridays, you may enjoy free jazz concerts from 5-8 pm.
If you have any amount of interest in art, you HAVE to visit the Sculpture Garden. Walk around and explore all the various sculptures and installations. Esp the metal tree - if its sundown - Watch the last sun rays gleam and glimmer off of the metal! As spring transitions into summer, the Sculpture Garden turns into an open-air event spot - Multiple events happen here - Including musical performances. Nothing like enjoying one of those with a glass of beer and the sun!Recommended!
Very nice but not too many galleries open due to pandemic.
Its was all so emotional to be near and inspiring would recommend again
Love the skating. Go all the time. Last time there, though, there were 3 crew people standing around using on their phones while one guy worked in the booth receiving and checking out skates. something was definitely wrong. Also, the same crew would take the ice and skate really fast and unsafe. Totally show offs. One woman complained they were scaring her daughter. They were stopping and spraying ice on younger girls (flirting). I complained to poor one guy working in the booth, but its clear he said nothing.
An open and small exhibit located between art museum and museum of history at national mall. The place has a small cafe to get food and get refreshed. Did not find any amazing artifacts but good point to take a pot stop!
Great experience, makes you forget about the busyness of DC. Had fun at the skating rink!
Its a great place to be surrounded by green and water.Restful in a busy city
Nice small park with beautiful art exhibits and a nice skating ring in the centre. Nice small cafeteria for the tourists also
Nice park to walk around, look at the unique sculptures, and chill out.
A delightful place to enjoy a stroll and appreciate art sculptures.
Had so much fun visiting National Art Gallery with my Children and Grandchild
Nice hidden gem in DC. Had a cafe to too. Beautiful sculptures and gardens to view. Nice sitting area with water fountains too was a perfect way to relax.
This outdoor sculpture area is easily missed by all the tourists, but its a lovely space with a mix of contemporary sculptures, including a Sol Lewitt piece. Cafe and live music add a touch of delight and charm; good place to relax after a long day around the museums. Closes at 7pm though.
Wonderful water feature. STEM TIP: Water has three phases and generally in the summertime it is in the gaseous & aqueous / liquid phases, in which you may soak your tired dogs, and below freezing, such as in wintertime, one may have ice, for which to ice skate upon.
Truly lovely. Worth the visit. We have to be quite selective as our trips across the pond are usually quite short, but this is worth the visit. Children were very happy and engaged.
This was a surprising and enjoyable find in Washington. The park was pleasant and spacious. I only walked round the park but I would recommend it. It’s a great place to stop by as you walk amongst some of the more famous sites in DC.
Had a great experience! Rental fees are reasonable and the grounds are gorgeous. Head over to the Pavilion Cafe for amazing food! Makes a great couples night out or a fun activity with the kids!
A beautiful place to walk in or having lunch.
This place rocks. The kids were tired of walking and the museums were starting to get really crowded. We stumbled across this place on our way to the national history museum. The kids were able to sit down in the shade and watch the fountain. They also loved looking at all the sculptures. If you want to take a load off the feet and relax for a little this place is perfect.
Beautiful grounds with interesting art objects on the national mall. I am sure there is a theme but you will find everything from tin trees to rabbits with very large ears. It’s right off the mall and very accessible. If you are visiting the mall this is a pleasant place to come by and relax from all your walking.
We walked through on our way from the metro to the Natural history Museum. Absolutely loved it, as did the kids. It wasnt originally in our plan, but so glad it worked out.
Absolutely loved my experience in the Ice Rink. The staff was so engaging and kind. I love to ice skate (not an expert) and this is the perfect place to enjoy the sculpture, the music and the great environment. One of my first experiences in DC and one of the best so far. So dont hesitate to go and skate, there is not much time left.
Great location and right off the National Mall plenty of outside art. Pavilion offers food and clean restrooms. The center fountain is not in use during the winter doubles as a ice skating rink.
Interesting & thought provoking statues and a nice shady fountain to eat your sandwiches next to.
Absolutely beautiful outdoor gallery.
Don’t really see how some of this stuff counts as art but it’s a cute park
I went during the Jazz in the Garden which they do every Friday in the summer time. They had a reggae band there playing. It was an enjoyable time, VERY CROWDED! A long line to get drinks. Parking garages within the area about a 6 minute walk from there. The sculptures were nice but they were being blocked by so many people in the garden.
One of my favorite places to view and appreciate great public art and relax. This is a great place with connections to the Mall, to other museums. There is a cafe attached but super expensive.
A pleasant place to sit in the heart of DC.
Highly recommended the ice skating class here! The coaches are very nice and patient. They teach based on your level and needs, even in group lessons. Not crowded. The class is taught before the public opens. So you are not interfered by other people. And you will get another 30 minutes at least practice time after the class. The season pass is worth the money too!
A nice small garden with interesting scultures and fountains. Best one i liked is Thinker on a Rock.
Love this sculpture garden. Has wonderful, silly, fun artwork and even a ice rink during the cold months. A restaurant and restrooms if you need them. Of course the food is pricey - but then again so is much of the cafes, restaurants, and food places on the Mall and in DC.They also have special events so sometimes it may be crowded.
Beautiful park and the cafe is great place to grab a hot chocolate and rest your feet
Great for a walkthrough, mind the hours, they change by time of year and special events. Ice skating is a great deal, get 2 hours on ice and rentals for less than $10.
Well kept with interesting sculptures.
Fantastic sculpture garden! Some amazing pieces by world renown artists. The Lichtenstein house is a mind trip thats worth the visit alone. Meander at your own pace and with relative space as this garden is lesser frequented by the crowds.
The gallery is well laid out. All the exhibts are clearly labeled and easy to navigate. There are free maps provided at the entrance. The building has a nice court yard in the middle and very clean restrooms.
A beautiful oasis in the summer heat, a nice café to visit between museums
Went here for jazz in the garden Friday nights in the summer. Amazing vibes and it’s free! Sangria and food available to purchase which makes it even more fun
The grand fountain is turned into an ice skating rink in the winter. In the warmer months, the same area flows with water and crowds gather on weekends for a weekly outdoor concert series. Bring your own skates or rent on site. The pavilion area also has a cafe and skating classes are available.
World class sculptures located in a beautiful garden. The set up is great and well thought and makes the walk around the sculptures full of surprises
It was a vibe!
Small but very nice. Well known sculptors and nice garden arrangements. Lovely fountain and benches under shade
The Sculpture Garden, to tourists, is a unique garden on the National Mall housing modern art and a cafe. Many will come to see the art and others will tip their toes in the massive fountain in the middle during the summer. For locals, the garden is a gathering place during any season. During the summer, the garden hosts Jazz In the Park, which is a DC rite of passage. Live music plays as interns/locals scramble to find a place to picnic with expensive wine for purchase. In the winter, the fountain turns into the best outdoor skating rink in the city with a beautiful backdrop in the National Archives.Regardless, the garden is worth a visit for any occasion and no matter who you are.
Great place to visit. An absolute must for everyone! Beautiful, beautiful!
Beautiful garden to walk through
Nice towering sculptures - and theres not many of them so a visit shouldnt last more than half an hour. Just realized as Im writing this that I actually enjoyed the art here more than the indoor National Gallery of Art across the street. Its more relatable and easier on the eyes.
The National Gallery of Art, and its attached Sculpture Garden, is a national art museum in Washington, D.C., located on the National Mall, between 3rd and 9th Streets, at Constitution Avenue NW. Open to the public and free of charge, the museum was privately established in 1937 for the American people by a joint resolution of the United States Congress. Andrew W. Mellon donated a substantial art collection and funds for construction. The core collection includes major works of art donated by Paul Mellon, Ailsa Mellon Bruce, Lessing J. Rosenwald, Samuel Henry Kress, Rush Harrison Kress, Peter Arrell Browne Widener, Joseph E. Widener, and Chester Dale. The Gallerys collection of paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculpture, medals, and decorative arts traces the development of Western Art from the Middle Ages to the present, including the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci in the Americas and the largest mobile created by Alexander Calder. The Gallerys campus includes the original neoclassical West Building designed by John Russell Pope, which is linked underground to the modern East Building, designed by I. M. Pei, and the 6.1-acre (25,000 m2) Sculpture Garden. The Gallery often presents temporary special exhibitions spanning the world and the history of art. It is one of the largest museums in North America.
Skating is so much fun in the winter.
It was amazing i skated as long as i wanted and no one can actually judged you. You could also make friends while on the ice which is really cool also when your done you can go to the cafe and get something to eat along with some hot coo coo.
Jazz on the garden, every Friday, during summer is the best thing to look forward to. It can be very crowded, therefore, its best to be there by 4 PM.
Pretty cool place to stroll through on a nice day. The installations are neat to look at although some of them made me wonder why they were considered art (like the giant wall of steel??). Looking forward to going back here for Jazz in the Garden one Friday this summer!
Great place to sit and take a short break while seeing the sites. Food is good, sangria is great. All very reasonably priced. I normally will order a pitcher of sangria with friends and sit outside people watching.
DC in The Fall!
Just a really relaxing place to walk around and see the sculptures or sit by the massive fountain. If you want a bite to eat stop by the Pavillion Cafe right next to the fountain.
Very good
So fun to skate right in the middle of the Nations Capitol. Well maintained real ice, surrounded by beautiful sculptures and hot cocoa at the beautiful Pavillion Cafe.
Interesting sculptures with a nice cafe on the side. Benches available to sit down and reflect.
Great place to visit. Cool artwork in a relaxing spot.
I love to stop by here and dip my feet in the fountain as I study. As long as it’s not too hot outside.
Favorite restaurant in D.C.! Yes, it is simple sandwiches, but they are great! And the desserts are out of this world! We actually plan our visits to museums and memorials to include this restaurant at least twice for every trip we have made to D.C. This last time in February 2016 we were treated to not only a great lunch and dinner on two separate days, but an awesome experience with the albino squirrel that has also adopted this restaurant as home! This squirrel has become so friendly with people, it will come right up to you asking for food. Words cannot describe how wonderful this restaurant is and the squirrel was just an added bonus!
Lots of great and interesting sculptures here. It makes for a very nice walk. It is also conveniently located next to some of the big museums. There is also a huge tile there which is nicely decorated. I think that this is a great place to go on a walk and get to see really nice pieces of art.
Skate in winter, stroll and sit in summer, nice cafe, enclosed in the DC museum area, beautiful scenery.
Went to ice skating on the second day it was “open” to celebrate my birthday weekend. Boyfriend planned out an entire day based on going ice skating in dc. He checked the website and it said it opened November 16 and we planned to go November 17. Show up and there is a sign that says “Open November 16-March 10” but they were closed... very disappointed that they did not make tourists aware of this change.
Nice walking paths, sculptures, and a good outdoor place to take a break between museum visits. Ice skating rink here during the winter and live jazz events in the summer.
Great area on the national mall to go and have a picnic while looking at modern art sculptures. In the summer there is a summer jazz in the garden series Friday evenings and in the winter there is an ice skating rink with rentals available.
Nice place to relax
I just passed though and this seems like a nice park to enjoy. Next time I will have to save 30 minutes to enjoy.
Love the restaurant in the garden. Great seating and great selection.
Sitting by the central fountain on a hot, summer day is an absolute delight. I would also highly recommend Jazz Fridays though make sure you get there early as they have a tendency to fill to capacity quickly.
Did a quick walkthrough. Pretty interesting sculptures.
Not kid friendlyThe staff said that if a kid falls you cannot pick them up. They expect a hurt two year old to get up and skate off the ice. There is a big difference between comforting a child while stationary holding the side for thirty seconds, and carrying them while skating around. Their rules here do not allow such a distinction.Save your money and skate elsewhere.
Visited during the summer so it was a pond.Need to get away from the busy mall? Come cool down and relax here! Tons of trees for shade, nice fountain to easily dip your feet in. There is a cafe nearby that you can buy a drink and some snacks, although rather expensive.Search online for local concerts playing here. There was a jazz concert when I visited and it was the perfect relaxing end to a long day of walking.
Nice shaded place to rest and enjoy a Calder .
Attended Jazz in the garden here and it is absolutely worthy!
Beautiful little garden to see some unique artwork, sit and relax, or people watch. Ive only visited this place once, and Im not sure if the artwork changes over time. Regardless, it makes for some nice pictures!Check it out, especially if youre visiting the National Mall in Washington, DC. Its a short walk-through... but very nice.
Hidden gem: The Chagall mosaic behind the trees to the right of the cafe. Everyone misses it.
Beautiful outdoor garden. Easily one of the top public spaces in DC, the Sculpture Garden is so beautiful and a great way to take a break and relax while you take in some beautiful art pieces. The garden cafe offers some bites with indoor or outdoor dinning. The garden is absolutely adorable in the winter with the ice rink and lighting put up.
Walter Disney Study Abordent Follows
Pretty garden to walk through
The fountain is very round, just how I like it. It has a wide flat lip for sitting down and admiring the surrounding area. It is encircled with well maintained trees. Very nice!
Will be missing this place badly as the weather changes now. its always great seeing all these different places in DC and finding an open space where you can sit and breathe.
It was ok
Fun sculptures~ it is still fun walk around the park and check out the art sculpture. The eraser is my favorite one!
Just an awesome place to hangout outside and relax.
Worth of frequent visiting because the items and arrangement changes.
Very nice place!
A great place to be any time of year. A wonderful place to sit and enjoy the sculpture when the weather is warm. Im not an ice skater, but its still fun to watch the skaters when the rink is in place.
Im an art major so I might be slightly biased, but this is by far one of the best sculpture gardens Ive wandered through. The artwork seemed purposeful to me here. It wasnt just a bunch of abstract hodge-podge scrap sculptures thrown together and called art that the average person could not appreciate. This place was just really really nice! It was a garden as well as an outdoor museum, which added to it. The fountain in the middle is just huge! and plenty of seating on and around it as well. It wasnt busy when I went on a Sunday and could thoroughly enjoy it.Theres a little something for everyone from metal to rock to wicker to you name it. Things that make sense to things that dont make sense to things that should make sense but blow your mind!.If you happen to be out on the Mall, then a stroll through here should definitely be on your to do list
