In a city full of free museums why would you bother to go here? Because the art and special exhibits are particularly great. The Phillips also doesn’t tend to get as crowded as the art museums along the Mall. Sign up for the emails to keep your eyes peeled for discounted or free entry, as well as the fantastic nighttime events.

Smaller than the big museums on the mall, but an excellently curated collection from the first modern art museum. Wonderful museum store with a great book selection. Loved the special exhibit of Aboriginal women artists. Cafe and restroom available inside museum. No food or drink allowed in the museum. Stay 2 feet from the art or get fussed at by one of the numerous docents.

The first modern art museum, it remains a gem! Skillfully housed in Duncan Phillips historic home and newer additions, the space is the perfect home for the art work. The permanent collection is lovely, and their special exhibitions are always well curated and thought provoking. An added bonus, the permanent collection is free on weekdays.Theres a wonderful family gallery, at a childs eye level, with intriguing questions, colorful cushions and an excellent nook with great art books to read during a break. To complete your experience, both the museum shop and Cafe are delightful. I never fail to find delightful, unexpected treasures in the shop - fabulous books for all ages, luxurious pens and pencils, jewelery, and much more.Tryst, the cafe, serves their coffee with animal crackers!Fantastic all around.

We accidentally happened upon this museum. We are so glad we did! There are some fabulous paintings in their standard home collection...Renoir, Monet, Manet, Rothko. Amazing! The aboriginal women artist collection that is here for a visit is well worth the fee. During the week, the standard parts of the museum are free, but you have to pay to see the aboriginal collection. This museum is a hidden gem!

The Phillips is fantastic! They have a lovely collection and the permanent collection is free on weekends (except Monday). Attractions include the Rothko Room, the music room (which has two pieces by Mondrian), and their rotating display on the third floor. I went while the Smithsonians have been closed during this government shut down and had a wonderful day.

Absolutely amazing! Great permanent collection and the visiting exhibition was quite substantial. Everything is well maintained and clean. The gift shop is fun but doesnt pertain to the current collection much, unfortunately. The garden is quite small, but is pretty. Its not the most accessible place and the chair lift is quite loud/scary to be honest. The staff is competent. They have an activity room for kids and family bathrooms.

One of the most wonderful museums I’ve ever been to. The luncheon of the boating party by Renoir is just one of many highlights. Even one of my favorite expressionists (Franz Marc) made it into the Phillips Collection. They have a superb variety of artists and styles. I like how they displayed the paintings. The rooms are decent sized so you don’t have to squeeze yourself through masses of people gathered around a single painting. Staff was very engaging and was fast giving you an explanation for some of the art work you were looking at. Great museum cafe with the possibility to sit outside in the sun. If you have to decide for one museum in DC the Phillips collection should be your go to museum. Even though you have to pay an entrance fee it is totally worth it. I would chose this museum over any other museum in and around DC!

I visited The Phillips Collection today. I appreciate that the museum has an endowment, or some sort of income that enables curators to continue to purchase art and have special exhibits. However, I was primarily there for the permanent collection, as I have a special affinity for early-to-mid 20th century modern art.I WAS SO DISAPPOINTED that the Rothko room, which was one of my main motivators to see the museum, was surrounded by The Warmth of Other Suns, a temporary, only-for-pay exhibit. It wasnt financially possible for me to pay to see the exhibit, and thats not mostly what I wanted to see anyway. One docent quietly told me that I should just walk into the Mark Rothko room, and if anyone questioned my presence, proclaim that it IS part of the permanent collection and that I should be allowed to see it. And thats what I did, along with my oldest daughter. However, it shouldnt feel clandestine to visit what should be open for visitors to the permanent collection!! What is more: I was HORRIFIED that there was a piece from TWoOS in the Rothko room, and further horrified by the audio file that looped, loudly and relentlessly!!! SO WRONG ON SO MANY LEVELS. That room is supposed to be a chapel; a place of repose and contemplation. I cant tell you how tremendously disappointed I was in my highly-anticipated experience of the Rothko room. Here I am, traveling from Arizona, in the DC area for two weeks, and I have told people far and wide that likely my most anticipated experience was the Rothko room at The Phillips Collection. And now I will tell and re-tell the story of how poorly the museum is set up, how awkward it makes it -- intentionally, I feel -- for free visitors, and what a deflating, disappointing, dissonant experience it ended up being.I have been to countless museums that have a for-pay or extra-pay area for special exhibits. However, Ive never been in a museum where the special exhibit is so integrated into the passageways of what should be public, and then we feel like we have to walk with eyes downcast, moving quickly, to access what we should be able to access. I dont know who planned that, but it is a truly horrible arrangement.

Ive been a member of the Phillips for years, and, weather permitting, try to visit at least once or twice a month. Favorites move in and out of storage. Paintings Ive never seen before suddenly appear, making every visit special. The current exhibit, Zilia Sanchez Soy Isla, was totally new to me. What a great opportunity to be able to see it again and again before it closes. Renoirs Luncheon of the Boating Party and Jacob Lawrences Migration Series are must-sees. Theres a discounted $48 individual membership available to seniors, military, students and teachers and people living more than 150 miles away, which includes two free passes. There are lots of restaurants in the area and a very nice little cafe in the gallery if you want a cup of coffee or light lunch.

The Philips Collection is one of the premiere modern and contemporary art museum in the United States. Located on 21st Street near Dupont Circle, this is a must-see attraction for art fans, particularly those with interest in late 19th and 20th century art genres.Entry to view the main collection is by donation but there is a fee for viewing exhibitions ($12 per adults). Opening hours are 10am to 5pm (Tues - Sat) with extended hours to 8.30pm on Thursday, 12pm to 7pm (Sun). The museum is closed on Mondays. The museum is based upon the collection of Duncan and Marjorie Acker Philipps and was founded in 1921 as the first museum of Modern Art in America. Here you can view works by household names when it comes to Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary art. Renoir, Cezanne, Degas, Van Gogh, Matisse, Monet, Picasso, Whistler, Calder, OKeeffe, Rothko amongst others are represented within the Philips Collection. In addition to the excellent collection of art, the property itself is delightful if you enjoy architecture and historic buildings. This is a Georgian Revival style house constructed in the late 19th century. It is recognised on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States. The Music Room in particular is worth spending time to view. The wooden panel carvings above and around the fireplace is particularly impressive. In the end, The Philips Collection is a very good collection. We very much enjoyed our recent visit and would happily return during future trips to D.C. Best to allow 1-2 hours to view the full permanent collection and to enjoy exhibitions being held during the time of your visit.Note: The Philips Collection has a very good website. Here you can get a preview of the collection highlights as well as current and future exhibitions that are to be held.

If youre visiting Washington, this is an easy museum to see. Its much smaller than the museums on the National Mall, but very kid friendly and accessible. Its a significant private collection and its most famous piece is Renoirs Luncheon of the Boating Party (Google it: if youre considering visiting an art museum at all, itll probably be familiar to you). There are lots of friendly staff to talk with about the collection. Theres a cafe, but there are lots of places to eat and drink in the surrounding Dupont Circle neighborhood. Visitors should be aware that, unlike the Smithsonian museums, this is a private institution and theres an admission charge.

They had some interesting art and I really appreciated the historic house. Im not a fan of museums that you have to pay for, due to the creation of an inaccessible environment, and to have them charge to see an art exhibit about the current global refugee situation- with NO indication the profits were being sent to help those affected by the horrors in their home country/ the issues in the countries they are fleeing to- I feel as if they were exploiting these people for their own profit. I understand that many exhibits are difficult to see, and that the museum may need money, but this specific exhibit is not the way to make money, unless it is actually going to the people and situations depicted. Whether or not the exhibit contained this content, the museum is set up in such a way that you cant fully avoid the part you need to pay for, so they have tons of employees (maybe volunteers?) ushering the non-paying visitors to the free sections to reduce the amount of pay-exhibit seen. It would at least make me feel less guilty to not be a paying visitor if they completely closed off the floors you had to pay for, instead of walking in and then having an employee run over and tell me Im not suppossed to be there, and heres some vague directions on how to get to the free part. Or maybe even put the Rothko Room in the designated free section- not within the charged section. The Rothko Room is listed as a free permanent exhibit, but is located deep within the charged section, making it uncomfortable to get to without paying. I heard about this museum and specifically its Rothko Room on a screen while riding the DC metro months ago, and was excited to be able to see Rothkos paintings in person after studying them for so long. I planned a trip back to DC to see it. After wandering around the large but very sparse free area, I finally found the Rothko Room within the charged exhibit. I had two employees usher me through the charged exhibit (quickly, so I didnt see much) and I felt as if I were a burden in the free section of a museum I travelled six hours from college to see. It is extra ironic that this room is meant for meditation, and I was made to feel uncomfortable and nervous for existing in this space because I did not pay for this exploitive exhibit.
