Rough going for businesses on 18th Street and Columbia Road these days. It appears to me many businesses are closed. But they have heart at Tryst, open and doing the best they can under challenging circumstances. Coffee is still great and seated at exactly 10:00 AM time qualified to order a bloody mary. Our server gave the cautionary disclaimer that no garnishes - celery stick, pickle, olives nor lime squeeze in bloody mary’s, I guess in an effort to combat COVID. It’s still a breakfast of champions without the garnish.I generally am not ordering a bloody mary at 10:00 AM mid-week. My best friend’s son is in DC from LA for a couple of days and suggested we get together for coffee this morning. I thought a bloody mary was appropriate. Tryst is near where Jon is staying and the perfect location for our purpose, being seated at a table outside on the street between the curb on one side, sidewalk side, and butted up against a jersey wall on the other, in the street. It added to the already dystopian ambience. Our server was in good spirits and my spirit (bloody mary) was good. Cheese and ham croissant tasted delicious though mustard, which I like on cheese and ham croissant, was not available under a variation of the no garnish bloody mary rule. We had a nice time. Real life is your best entertainment value.
I went to Tryst to meet someone for coffee. We were seated very close to large open doors so it felt very safe considering Covid. While we were talking and drinking our coffee we were singled out 3 times in less than an hour to put our masks back on unless we were actively drinking. It was excessive, awkward and unnecessary. We were a good distance from anyone else. It wasnt a good experience. Would not recommend going to Tryst. Added after the response: the standards were not enforced equally. Many people were talking and not wearing masks for very long period of times. We were singled out over and over...even if we only had our mask off for a short time between sips. It doesnt make much sense to take a sip, put your masks on, take your mask off and take another sip. We were very far from others and essentially seated outside. I have not been to any other business that was as strict. I stand by the comment that it was unnecessary. We were in no way unsafe and we were not putting others at risk in any way.
Tryst is a welcoming respite in a pandemic ridden world. They are large enough that the tables and seating can naturally social distance while the indoor/outdoor lines are blurred by the doors being open the whole time. This may change as it gets cooler, but for now, it’s a lovely feature. They have full table service while you’re sitting, including a selection of brunch items that range from small to filling, sweet to savory. I’ve found their table service to be somewhat curt at times, but service is quick and reliable. Coffee tastes great too.In terms of a place to come work to get out of the house, this Tryst location gets a full endorsement from me. I’ve spent several full work days here and have had zero issues with their WiFi (in fact, it’s sometimes faster than my home WiFi!). Sometimes, sitting outside can be hard during calls since 18th st is quite loud, but inside is wonderful. They do close at 4pm right now during the pandemic, so make sure to plan for the inevitable relocation if you have meetings that bump up against that closing time. But overall, a really great experience to work outside the house. In closing, thank you Tryst, for trying so hard during this challenging time to make a welcoming space that also is safe. I’ll keep coming back!
Tryst is a very safe a comfortable coffee house and lounge in the heart of Adams Morgan on 18th St. Its staff like, Juan, makes sure you get your drink exactly like you want it. The space is big and social distancing is carefully kept. Highly recommended!
Tryst was my favorite coffee shop in DC! I used to go there every week to study! The atmosphere is great, service is great, and food is great. Price is also a plus. The only down side is that this place gets really busy during the day, other than that this is a must go in Adams Morgan.
Tryst has great atmosphere. Though slightly changed due to Covid, and added service area on the street available. Its still pretty great tea and excellent coffee. However menus leave something to be desired. Mostly because price didnt seem to fit the final product. Still if budget isnt a concern for you, have at it. Their Death By Chocolate is excellent.
Cool spot. Solid coffee. Surprisingly good baked goods. I feel sorry for them by way of art. Im from a metropolis with an art scene and have traveled the world, the artist featured at least right now is depressingly mediocre. I wish that I could curate the art for this place and host a salon. But alas, Ill settle for just popping in for coffee.
Food is good but do not make plans if you intend to dine here. There servers will take forever and actively ignore you. This happened once and I put it down to a one-off. But it has happened twice now.
Great tea.great coffee.healthy, clean food options.the interior is stunning and warm.go see and feel for yourself.
Tryst is the perfect stop in Adams Morgan for outdoor dining coffe and breakfast. The coffee is 5 stars - very good. I ordered a Latte with oat milk and it was deelishus!! The Food was just ok but they do have many options on their bakery and Brunch All Day menus. Everything from Croissants, Bagels and waffles to breakfast burritos. The Quiche tasted ok, it does come with a fresh salad which is nice. Prompt, friendly service, nicely decorated restaurant and great use of space for Social Distancing. I highly recommend this place for a coffee!
Place was surpringsly great! Was not sure when we walked in. But food was good, service was good, and even though doors were open it was nice and cool inside. Also i should mention, the fruit cup was amazingly fresh. Its been awhile since Ive had really good fruit at a restaurant.
Tryst is a staple of Adams Morgan and 18th street. Lots of options for different diets. Im a vegan so it matters to me. Lots of outdoor seating now during covid. Friendly staff. Awesome ambiance.
Great shop, I really liked the decor on the inside. It was a really relaxing vibe in the morning before I had to head to a mental energy heavy conference right around the corner at the Marriot. The staff treated me well as a non-local and the coffee had a great taste with the right amount of kick.
Interesting place. They have a massive seating area, but if you sit you are expected to order (meaning someone will bring you water and a menu). On the other hand you can grab a coffee and pastry to go. They also have a really nice seating area outside. When I was there around 5pm the place was pretty lively, but not overly crowded.
Amazing brunch spot! Community seating (big wooden tables)and also couches and smaller tables towards the back. I ordered an Irish coffee, due to the winter weather, and it was exactly as I had hoped. The quiche (broccolini and cheddar) had a rich but flaky crust, and was not overdone. I also ordered the fruit instead of salad and everything was fresh. My boyfriend ordered the breakfast burrito which I also tried and was not disappointed. The service was outstanding and our server was friendly and very helpful!! We will be back for sure!
My wife introduced me to the open faced tuna sandwich here.............! And of course I must say, always polite and sometimes very fast. Do yourself a favor, eat here.
This place requires a phone number for tracing (and likely selling your data). If you care about that kind of thing, don’t bother coming here. It’s a shame because the barrista was nice and the place seemed laid back.
We went there on an unbusy covid19 (monday) evening respecting with masks and being polite. Ordered some drinks. Three beers and a coke for our underage person with us. After 3o minutes and nothing, we thought all of the empty tables out in front meant you could order food from anywhere and eat it out there. We got some kabob from the place next door. Then we werent ignored by tryst. You cant eat outside here. You cant do this. You cant do that. How about a sign that says for trust customers only? You must have had to pour the beers we ordered down the drain that we ordered because you embarrassed us away into the kabob place to eat our food.Last time I was at tryst was about 3 or 4 times a week during 1997-1999 when I lived in Adams Morgan. Wanted to show my family something great from a long time ago. This experience really did not impress me.
The mocha frapp was delicious. Ask them to add vanilla.
I love this place. The employees are all AMAZING and I had the best decaf latte ever!
Super-friendly staff. Yummy food & drinks. [ Crackers]!
Go here if you want to eat food that looks good, tastes disgusting and is expensive for the quality, quantity. Also free flies available- which keep you entertained while your wait for the food seems endless. The place was super busy,we literally had to stand next to a table who were paying and grabbed the seats as soon as they got up!Looking at the number of people in the restaurant and their reviews,I was expecting decent food but what a disappointment it was!A cup of coffee,Avocado toast and chocolate waffles costed us around 30$ including tax.
Terrible experience. Order took forever and was totally wrong for the first beverage. Then they ran out of coffee so had to make me an Americano. The cup was leaking and scalding hot coffee was pouring everywhere. Coffee wasn’t even good. This all after I gave a big tip to start.
The food is really good, but I’m amending my review after hearing about the treatment of their staff.
The menu is still appetizing and tasty, and you dont care its not the full predemic selection. Staff was as friendly as ever, and made us feel comfortable in an evolved scenario for dining out.
Very casual and laid back spot. Open seating, massive cups of coffee, and animal crackers with your order.
Super cute coffee shop, theyve spread it out so its properly social distanced without losing the charm
Tryst is a wonderful place to come to work or to eat/drink something with friends. It is slow paced, as many people come here to spend the whole afternoon or even the whole day working. Monday through Friday, Tryst offers free wifi; I am not sure about the weekends now. Since they reopened in the new coronavirus era, I like to spend one day a week working here, so that I change the scenery of my kitchen. Regarding the food today, I totally loved the spinach and feta cheese (amazing!!!) and the greek salad. But I was pretty disappointed at the Death by Chocolate Waffle. I had imagined rich melted chocolate would be available to pour abundantly on the waffles, but there is no chocolate to add. Its just that they put some chocolate inside the waffle mix. It comes with honey. I cant even taste the chocolate, so big disappointment. But I dont want to focus on that too much. The menu was never what brought me here. If they had a better menu, I would surely spend more money here. But I still come, and since I usually spend a bunch of hours, I make sure to tip accordingly. That is not just 20% of what I consumed. If I keep a table busy all day long, I leave 15 or 20 dollars of tip, which is still much cheaper than paying any office space per hour.
One of the coolest coffee hangouts in DC. It’s comfortable, welcoming, and cool, unlike most utilitarian coffee shops that seemingly want you out of their coffee shop ASAP. Buy a croissant, coffee, or mixed drink and hang out a while. (No WiFi on weekends!) Finding a table for a big group is hard, especially in the afternoons. But for a couple, the couches at days perfect and the menu selection ranges from baked goods to salads to full meals. It’s pricey but everything in DC seems to be.
Honestly one of my worst dining experiences ever. We stood at the front door waiting to be seated and were walked past by 2 different employees, neither of which acknowledged us. When we were finally seated, no one seemed to have any clue who was taking care of us. We ordered nachos which arrived cold, unmelted and tasting so bad that we left to go somewhere else to eat. Will never be going back.
Nice staff, good wifi and coffee
The service is a little slow but great food and spot
Service nailed it! Everyone was so warm & interesting. Felt like they enjoyed working here. Had snacks and beers at the bar and never felt rushed. (Bathrooms could use a little remodel/refresh).
The perfect place for a date, meeting up with friends, studying or just grabbing a beer with a buddy. I love that its more than just a small cafe - its a coffee shop with food and a bar. They have a few big couches, a fireplace and tons of tables. If the weather is nice, they even have a little section to sit outside. The waiters are a super nice and the prices are too bad, especially since you get what you pay for.
I loved studying at Tryst in undergrad and revisited the place to catch up with an old friend. I’m happy to say nothing changed and they seem to have more options to accommodate an array of diets. I tried their gluten free waffle and it was delicious! I regret not ordering the strawberry topping but the plain waffle with syrup hit the spot. They also have vegan options and a great tea collection to choose from.
I love the food here, they have some of the best menu in all of DC. And the service is always great too. This place is a must if youre in the area.
Amazing spot for breakfast! We got the broccoli and cheddar quiche and buttermilk waffles and everything was fantastic. The service was quick and the staff at Tryst are so sweet! I would give it 10 stars if I could!
Great variety of food and drinks. Free WiFi so some people park themselves there for hours. Might have to worm your way to a table but it was worth it because the food is very good. Neighborhood is fun to walk around; there are a lot of neat shops and restaurants but I’m glad we chose Tryst!
I am not a regular in this neighborhood, but the second you walk in, you feel like everyone is.A coffee shop with actual places to sit and a menu of actual food.I don’t drink coffee so I was so grateful for full Coca Cola product line from the tap next to my friend with a giant cup of coffee.I got the cranberry ricotta toast which was the perfect mid day snack! (There were 4 pieces, I just forgot to take a pic before I started devouring)
Good ole Tryst! Cant go wrong here. The food is always good, and the drinks are excellent, top shelf, not rail. Great service, and pricing as well. A DC staple, and I love coming here!
Came here just for desserts and relax after a night out. The service was a bit slow, but we were able to order our drinks and dessert. The Death by Chocolate Waffle is quite delicious! Highly recommend it for anyone looking for some nutella covered waffles, and it is really soft so it was easy to slice through it with a fork. The Matcha Green Tea Latte and Lavender Hot Chocolate is quite good too. The Matcha Latte could taste a bit more bitter, but thats my preference. The Lavender Hot Chocolate was light and sweet.Overall, I would definitely go back just for the waffles!
This was a great relaxing no pressure spot. We will definitely come again. There was adequate spacing but it also felt intimate so it was the perfect combination. This is a great location to have 5 or less friends come out to.
Great atmosphere night or day. Plenty of lounge chairs coffee bar with alcohol. Decorated with local artists work. Diverse menu options for food like gluten free Waffles. A accordian player performed on the night visited. Liked by students and locals. Open late.
It is a cool cafe. Bring in your laptop and catch up with work if you like. I had a Bourbon cheesecake it was really nice.
They have a nice vibe going on here. It was a bit crowded so we took advantage of communal seating and we joined a dude who was studying. It seems to be a great place for working on things or chatting with a friend. They have table service and a bar. It’s loud, and comfortable. The service was very good, our server answered ALL of my questions, even when I got super specific and a bit annoying, and she was prompt. We had the tarp and beetroot latte, iced. I enjoyed this drink and would order it again. I’m not sure I’d like it hot. The Angela was ok. The bread was not as crunchy as a baguette, even though I think it was supposed to be a baguette and the cheese used was overwhelming for the sandwich. The turkey was moist and all the veggies was fresh and crunchy. The avocado toast was yummy. The grainy and seedy bread was perfectly toasted, the avocado was fresh, sliced hard boiled egg and radish pieces all worked together for a perfect bit. I would order this every time I visited. The bagel was ok, better than most in the area, but not as good as a New York bagel. The cookie was big and chocolaty and was enjoyed (duh). I would argue that the fudgy brownie was really more cakey brownie, and I want fudgy when ordering fudgy.I’d like to return to try other menu items.
Come for great sounds, a diverse crowd, and overall sense overload. The walls are covered in art and brightly colored. The street wall opens up to the patio and natural air fills the room. You can people watch from the many other venues nearby while sipping a well crafted cocktail or espresso drink and munching on original menu that has a few beer bite staples for the less adventurous. Lots of atmosphere here.
This place has really friendly staff, they do take a bit of time to get the orders though. It is always packed but it is a great place to get some work done and have informal work meetings. The food is mostly great, they have good vegetarian options, great drink selections and great coffee options.
Great for drinks and food is pretty cool as well, with sombre live music, a very lively place.
I LOVE Tryst - I’ve been coming for years. It’s a great spot to socialize or to get some time away for yourself. Nothing I’ve ever tried here has disappointed - the desserts and pastries are sublime, the sandwiches are tasty and filling, the waffles are to die for, and the drinks are great too! The lavender hot chocolate especially is worth trying. And the animal crackers they serve with the drinks is such a cute touch!
Great food, good music, overall really good experience. It was super busy when we went (Saturday afternoon) so the drinks and food took a while, but they were totally worth the wait! One of the best Bloody Mary’s I’ve had in a long time.
Great bar/coffee shop in a convenient location. Usually have a great drink menu, and their cafe is excellent as well (I can personally recommend their apple pie). If you’re in DC and staying near Adams Morgan, I would highly recommend!
Kind sever and pretty good coffee
Tryst is always a solid option. The strawberry banana pineapple smoothie was delicious as was the chia pudding, which was surprisingly filling. No WiFi on weekends and often hard to find a spot but can’t beat the service, food and location!
Great chill place. The drinks are exotic. The music is diverse. The people are also diverse. The food is pretty good. The atmosphere is different and hip. I love this place! Go here for late night study sessions with a friend
Very cute place. Plenty of seating and the coffee was tasty as well. They even have beer and wine as well as a happy hour. I definitely will be coming back the next time I am in Adams Morgan.
The coffee is outstanding, great prices and professional staff.
Good food, and a great vibe place. Funky selections like corn jalapeño waffle was awesome.
Good vibes and excellent food!
Great breakfast selection, general style and friendly staff
These reviews are right, the latte is amazing. The bacon, egg & cheese sandwich is the tastiest Ive ever had. Its also the largest...go there hungry. It was so good I felt bad for the people a few doors down at McDonalds having their breakfast mcmuffins.
The avocado toast and breakfast burrito are bomb. Our server was amazing, and the cortdada made my morning. Id highly recommend if youre looking for a whole food quick bite or good coffee.
My favorite cafe. never too loud or quiet. good hot chocolate and the taro latte is also great. I always come here to work and the hours are good for night owls. staff is really friendly and attentive, table service makes the whole place feel welcoming
First of all: the virgin Bloody Mary is amazing. But the service here is beyond extraordinary. I dropped my ring, and two staff members came with flashlights and phone lights, got on the ground, and helped me look for the tiny ring. They even turned on the lights (it’s a candlelit ambience in the evening times)- so they could help me better. Wow, above and beyond. Will definitely be coming back. Love the atmosphere, love the music (Tame Impala, ABBA)- great drinks, outstanding service.
Didnt like the Cafe. The bathroom was very dirty. The tables were not cleaned well.
Was Tryst open when I moved to DC 20 years ago? Not sure but it feels like I’ve been going there that long. Great coffee and good food selection with brunch food and sandwiches. You have to time it right to find a couch, but if you do, you can read, study, and people watch for hours. Still one of the best coffee shops in DC. Don’t be in a hurry, though, it takes a while to get the check.
Ive been going here for years. Food is always quality and the espresso terrific. Usually a chill vibe. Would recommend.
The dirty chai and pecan pie was delicious (The pecan pie was not too sweet). My wife ordered the matcha latte and loved it. Its a bit pricey but it is tasty. Its extremely packed inside and hard to find a place to sit (you come in and seat yourself). We had to share a table with strangers nevertheless it was an intresting and welcoming ambience.
I come here at least once a week! I absolutely love this place! The staff is fantastic! And the Mimosa is always on point ! Love this place!
We went for breakfast and it was really nice. Almost nobody, quick service and good food and price.
Cozy, friendly, delicious. Service was helpful and sweet. Great spot to get a bite to eat, study, or meet a friend for coffee.
Nice spot to sit and read a little bit. Great coffee & great staff. They have alcohol too!
Really cozy environment to have a drink and relax.
Great spot for a Friends style setting for a coffee or drink.
Fun and cute local coffee shop. Wide range of pastries, coffee, and more. They also have a full menu for food if you want something quick.
In love !!! Really nice place, delicious food, professional team!!!!
Amazing coffee and super comfortable seating. I ordered the tryst house blend and it was extraordinary.
They have a good coffee with a view
Open late. Cool staff. Vegan options. Amazing chai.
Nice cozy spot in Adams Morgan. Great staff and coffee!!
I used to come this place when they were open. I came back a years later still a great place and the people who work there is very friendly. Peace!
I measure all muffalettas against the o.g. from Central Grocery in New Orleans... so I must admit the muffaletta here at Tryst was on point. Too many places think drowning the sandwich in olive salad makes a great muffaletta. Those places would be wrong. Keep doing what youre doing, Tryst. Great cappuccino, also!
Its always crowded so seating can be a struggle for more than 2. Its what youd expect based on its looks. Not great and not horrible... Its predictably and consistently good which is a virtue when youre comfort fooding and meeting up with good friends or strangers for business—all of which it is good for
So comfy, relaxing and yet professional! Great place. We visited twice while in DC.
Nice and delicious pot of coffee! The atmosphere was great too. However, you need to pay attention to the furniture, especially the three seaters. I sat on one and I “sank downtown” immediately, which could’ve been dangerous if I were to be sick or pregnant .
Love! Love! Love! The breakfast sandwich was delicious and the customer service is great! Great atmosphere as well!
Staple neighborhood spot that draws its share of well-informed work travelers... Very comfortable vibe.
Lavender hot chocolate or lavender lemonade? This spot can be open air or a cozy respite from winter in Adams Morgan. They host solo musicians or have a plucky throwback playlist running as you dine by the bar, at shared tables, on lounge couches, or little two tops on the patio. In the center of the room there is a small lending library, and their latest baked goods are on display by the entrance.
Very cute place. Plenty of seating and the coffee was tasty as well. They even have beer and wine as well as a happy hour. I definitely will be coming back the next time I am in Adams Morgan.
Went around 9pm for hot cocktails. They were fantastic, good atmosphere and great dish selections.
