Great nature preserve. Easy and shorter trails, perfect for a family with smaller kids. Several great photo ops. I only wish the trails were better mapped out. I couldnt figure out how to get to the lake...if its even possible?
I’ve only done the looping trail south and east to the parking lot. For anyone who appreciates prairies and wildlife Habitats, you will be delighted here. The trail itself is a mowed path. The times I have been here, it was well maintained. Wildflowers and milkweed are abundant. Which means lots of happy bees, birds and butterflies. The trail isn’t long, but it’s pleasant. First half is open and vast, last part is wooded with plenty of tree canopy. The late afternoon soundtrack of crickets and birds was beautiful. Evidence that the restoration efforts here are actually befitting the creatures that call this park home.
Wonderful place. We hiked over 2 miles on three different trails. Some of it on challenging terrain with roots across the trails. We loved it and so did our dogs. Definitely a hidden gem in Porter County.
Great easy walk for the kids through the mowed Meadow. The woods got a little long and rough over the roots but the whole family had a great time exploring!
I found the trail on the northwest side to be somewhat lackluster. The trees are not dense. The underbrush is scarce and the trail is full of shallow roots from the trees. The ponds are more like swamps and are not pretty to look at. There is one saving grace in that there is a beautiful old tree probably 250 to 300 years old halfway down the northwest trail. The northwest trail ends at the road so you either have to double back on the path you just took or walk down the road to the parking area. The trail to the south and east is much nicer. It has a nicely kept trail that winds through a denser tree area and then opens up into some nice prairies. Its very easy to walk. There are plenty of birds chirping in the trail to the south and east. Overall, the total experience was simply okay. I wont be returning. Maybe thats why there are no signs showing you the entrance to this nature preserve. It is close to Valparaiso, so maybe its worth a look for you.
Pretty sure I missed the turn for parking but was a nice hike
Very nice hiking trails offering varying levels of difficulty and environments! Get out there and enjoy nature! There are a few washouts and roots on the wooded trails, but they can be easily avoided.
I cant believe Ive lived here for nearly 25 years and never hiked here! It was awesome!
Smallish length trails wooded and fields. Great spot for local walks. Be aware at least one of the entrances to the preserve tends to look like a private drive or utility road. Its OK youll see signs for the preserve once you start down that path.
It is a very serene hike with few locals taking advantage of it. You’ll need to be attentive as some parts have a lot of roots and if you don’t pay attention you could trip. The fall colors should look very good. There is a bench on the trail roughly 1/3 of the way from the East end and take your time and please sit there and listen to the birds and insects for it is very cool to enjoy them!
Very nice not too far away and absolutely beautiful
Beautiful place off the beaten track. Usually very quiet and empty.
Beautiful place for a short hike, especially in fall. Definitely wished there were more trails (only 2 different trails). The trails were in good condition and the combination of hills and woods makes it one of my favorite places to go in the area. Also is very quiet and did not see many people around.
Amazing trail, beautiful scenery! Lots of hilly terrain to enjoy!
Off the beaten track and thats not a bad thing. Very quiet area. The last time I visited I didnt see one other person and it was very peaceful. Beautiful views and fun trails to walk through!
Great woods area
Wonderful nature area with many trails, ponds, and habitat restoration in progress.
Very fun easy hike with lots of things to see
Beautiful place nice hiking areas.
Nice to walk and explore, has two different trails one through woods strictly other through open plain. Becareful not to go off trail there are large ravines in some areas, it is a nature preserve so leave only footprints.
Beautiful, private, pristine. A jewel of NW Indiana!
Very relaxing, nice trails!
Its really beautiful out there and its not populated whatsoever
When I was a kid I lived near here and we would constantly explore this area. Many, many hours over many summers were spent back here!
Pretty, well kept! Not a huge trail but nice little trail to follow with pretty views
Walked two trails. Not long but nice. Trails are easy to follow, which is good because there are no maps.
This is a great nature preserve hidden within Porter County. There are some cleared trails, but most of the land is allowed to grow undisturbed as it should be. In the few hours I spent out there I was able to view many different forms of wildlife all throughout the areas I hiked to. Many areas in early ecological succession is growing a good amount of poison ivy, and there was stinging nettle also. So keep an eye out. As with any nature preserve, be respectful. It is well worth the trip to see this area!
Varied topography and environments. Ravines, prairie, woods, swamp. Very limited parking though and no bathroom facilities.
Quiet, off-the-beaten-path type of spot...great little hike...
Beautiful place for a walk.
I cant imagine any nature preserve not looking beautiful in the fall, but the view I got over this large pond was amazing.
Nice area
