As an alumnus, I have to say that this place was AMAZING! Being surrounded by so many creative students and instructors was an absolute dream come true. Being creative often means that youre that one oddball in the room that, for the most part, doesnt fit in. Imagine an entire campus where you fit in! Thats what SUVA was for me. It allowed me to fly my creative flag high and explore what it really meant to be an animator. Not only did I learn a great deal, I made lasting friendships that I cherish to this day. I work in my chosen field AND Im loving every minute of it! Im so very grateful to everyone there! And while it wasnt easy, SUVA was one of the best experiences of my life!

My experience from this school is nothing but positive and have always felt supportive and welcoming. The classes themselves are filled with creative and useful assignments that genuinely make me excited to go to class everyday. Our instructors are understanding of our passions as they are just as passionate themselves about art and its history. The difference between such a personal school and a school like a larger university is such a calming and reassuring feeling. All my views have changed for the better and I can not wait to reach the rest of my classes and graduate into the work field I have always wanted.

As a current student here, I feel like we truly are a bunch of artist working and supporting each other. The student to teacher ratio makes it easy for me to discuss concepts with my professors. I have had a great experience at SUVA. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and willing to go the extra mile for their students. I enjoy the smaller class sizes and feel like I receive one on one attention when needed. As a transfer student I have learned more about Interior Design in my short time here than I ever did from my previous university. The projects that they assign are based off real life work that we can expect to see once we graduate. I feel confident that I will be successful in the Interior Design field once I graduate.

SUVA is a great place to learn Art and Design if youre interested in being in the Southwest of the United States. Not only does it teach the How of making art, but also the Why.Friendly front office staff, incredibly knowledgeable instructors, small classes = more attention/ability to ask questions.Final year of your degree allows you to personalize your projects to fit what you see yourself doing after you obtain your degree.

I am currently working on my BA in Illustration. I was given a place to stay while attending school and getting situated in my move and I also was given a job here at the school. Just like the school had told me they would give me.The education has not only improved my skills as an artist but also look beyond the how to do aspect. The education teaches you to see perspective (not just visual but also emotional.) They start with the basics in art with creating in black and white (with grays) (light and shadow) as well as seeing in shapes rather than copy what you see. This can be boring for more advanced artists but there is an appreciation and a reason behind it. (If you have art books they all teach you with the basics and then build off with it in more advance ways; the education here is in the same aspect.) As an artist you learn to create with different emotions, and teachers are open to teaching and allowing you to explore different options. If you want to do something, you can do it.I take the time and responsibility to make sure financially everything is okay. I make appointments to ensure that every semester I have no surprises. I hold onto all my receipts and if there is any issue, I dont wait until the last minute. I also check my loans and pay off any interest that is growing. What I came in knowing about the school prior and what I have personally experienced currently attending have been educational and positive.

Southwest University of Visual Arts offers an array of different degrees with programs that challenge students to create designs which inspire the viewer with a specific message or emotional response. In addition, the school creates a unique atmosphere for creativity to flourish through their teaching of both hand drafting and computer programs that are often utilized within the students career field. Ive had few bad experiences with this school. The instructors are understanding and very knowledgeable with what they teach. The projects Ive gotten to work on and the pieces Ive gotten to create have been so beneficial to my growth as an artist. If youre certain of what you want to major in and understand that this school is very similar to other colleges, meaning you need to actively show up and participate in class, you will have little trouble getting your degree. The front office can be hard to work with and slow with responses, but dont let that be the reason you dont give this school a chance.

Was promised to receive excess funds to help me with typical expenses like books and art supplies, etc. Never saw a dime. Thankfully some of my friends there would help me with supplies or using their book. Loved my instructors, however, one by one they all started quitting. Eventually, even the administrative staff left. Any staff that was willing to remain, was more than likely desperate for the work. I once was told by one of the replacement instructors that he wanted to SLAP ME because I didnt finish one of my papers. When I got upset and complained to one of the counselors, she sat back in her chair with her eyes to the ceiling. I could pretty much tell she couldnt have cared less. I have heard countless complaints about students who were ready to graduate, then they were told that their program had changed and they had to take more classes in order to receive their degree. A four year term would turn into eight. Many students who could afford a lawyer had to take them to court. Lets just the bad out weighs the good. The only thing I can say that I gained positively from this school was an amazing group of friends who are still in my life today.

Suva has given insight as to where i fit into in the art world. The foundation classes helped me to become a much stronger artist and the animation classes gave me skills and a new appreciation for the artform itself. But this is one story. Suva is not for everyone. The people who do well here are the driven, and have high aspirations of thriving in this industry. And the teachers are more than encouraging and helpful in this regard. Ive met with teachers outside of class to get a realistic view of the industry as well to help shape ideas that i couldnt put into words.I have struggled here, but this place has given me tools and skills to be successful outside. I have gotten several freelance jobs on my own because of these. This is a place i would recommend the driven individual, who not only wants to learn the how but the why, who sees themselves going far, and who is willing to put in the work to make that dream a reality.

I can seriously spend all night and day talking about how amazing this place is. I will share both pros and cons to not give just a bias or unrealistic review, because there is always room for improvement and nothing is perfect.PROS: I would like to start with the instructors. I was given exactly all the attention, help, and education that I needed. Not overwhelming, over powering, it felt as if it was tailored just for me. I could go to any instructor and ask about anything. In other schools I could not do that because that was out of their expertise and did not know how to help. Here I could go to anyone and anyone can help and or give advise. The education is great, I felt like I already knew what I was doing but I learned so much in just one semester. I am learning from REAL PROFESSIONALS! I simply could not ask for anything better. I also want to share that they always have a way to work with you,(including all staff) there will be hiccups and bumps in the road but they always find a way, it felt like a second home. I felt cared for. You can always reach them with questions and they always answer. You are never left in the dark.CONS: Being that SUVA is an art school I feel that it lacked some art supplies, but as I mentioned before, they always find a way to work with you. If they dont have it, they will order it for you. If you find a supply at another store at a better price, they will match it. so is this really a con??? I guess only if you dont like to wait or need something right away.Overall, I would give SUVA 5 stars because they deserve it. Its an amazing place to not only learn but grow as an individual. I cant wait to see how SUVA changes my life. I love this place.

Please please please do not go to this school! These people are crooks and steal money from their students. Not only is the education they teach here more like middle school to high school art, but they also are very bad at what they do. If you go here and need financial aid to pay for things good luck all of that is sucked up so you get no money back to buy materials you will need. These people have had quite a few lawsuits against them and the one that I know of has to deal with the school taking out financial aid for a student without her knowledge when she did not attend one summer, her parents paid for tuition and supplies but the school wanted more money so they filed the student for financial aid without her consent. Their policies are ridiculous and they do not give you enough time to get over being sick or hurt before they will drop you from a class or classes and make you do an appeals process to determine if they should let you back in. I do not go to this school I go to a real college but I know a lot of people who go here and have been trying to get them to drop this school before they end up with so much debt its unbelievable. The bookstore which is supposedly not part of the school its self is never really open to the public unless someone just happens to walk in and the admin owes the book store thousands of dollars which takes them more than a year to pay back and they wonder why the bookstore is not doing good with sales. This place is a scam and ripoff and if you truly want your child or yourself to get a great art education go to a real college and not this place. Many people who have graduated from this place end up working regular jobs like at bookmans or fast food because they are not a credited school. Please save your time and money and go elsewhere.

Their ability to embrace concepts and techniques simultaneously is a unique model in my 40+ years of art making. My graduate colleagues came from every corner of the country and brought with them a spectrum of experiences. It was a challenging program to be accepted into and an even more challenging program to complete yet we rose to the occasion with the support of the entire campus community.I have made real world connections in the art community through my contacts at SUVA.

I ALMOST got sucked into this school. Couple of tips and experiences I have: This is a for-profit school. The other reviews are correct about it being incredibly expensive. Their credit rate is over $900 a credit. I was told the price of it and that it was very affordable, but when I went further along in the process, things werent adding up right and only getting FinAid would NOT cover everything. You would have to get loans, theres no other choice, even though you can opt out. Even though I was pretty excited to do their Interior Design program, I feel I can do the same things at a MUCH less expensive college. Dont be fooled by the slick talking folks. Please take your time to research and read reviews from other students and almost students.

I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Animation at SUVA, and I can say that overall I am very satisfied with the school, the education I am receiving, and the instructors and staff of the institution. I feel I have improved greatly as an artist and am easily able to use the concepts taught in the classes, which are not only applicable to the real world but also to various art applications. Each class has a point and purpose which not only applies to each major, but also to everyday life. This I feel is incredibly important, for as graduates, these are principles of which will be used in the careers pursued beyond education. I have been pushed in classes to think critically, while also addressing various art design problems, only to be pushed to find the best solutions for the postulated issues. Again, this is an important exercise, for it directly represents what real world clients would request and require in any field of art. At SUVA, we are given the advantage to become used to this process, so we can better handle the pressure of a work environment as well as work expectations. The classes at SUVA are also very cerebral in nature, taking into consideration the way the human brain works and its interpretation of art. Much of the courses delve into the psychology behind artistic principles, and how best to understand these processes in order to most easily communicate the objective of each art piece produced. All of the staff and instructors are extremely helpful, giving the students various methods of contact to better facilitate the student and any help he or she may need. The instructors I have encountered thus far are very knowledgeable about their fields and can offer lots of help, solutions, and insight into various art inquiries. If one is willing to work with the school, SUVA is very good about working with the student to help the student achieve the educational and career goals he or she may be setting for the future. The tuition for SUVA is expensive, however, I feel it is an investment worth making. Like with anything else in life, an education at SUVA takes a lot of time, work, and effort, but its expectations are no different than any other university or college across the United States. If anything, SUVA offers a more intimate relationship between student and staff, which is highly beneficial to the student and the future career goals the student hopes to achieve. Being a small school, it is also much easier to make friends and connections with the other students and staff. Again, I feel this is very beneficial, as we are all attempting to achieve the same goal of success in the fields of our pursuit. I believe that with enough determination and effort from the student, SUVA works just as hard to make it possible to achieve that very success, which will benefit the student for a lifelong career in art.

Alumni here, and sad that I decided to stick it through to finish. I went through the Illustration program 2009-2013 - it was a horrible waste of money. The foundations are solid in core classes but advanced techniques are lacking due to some staff either not being up to date on modern methods or just being outright incompetent. The painting classes in my last two years were absolutely atrocious, taught by someone who didnt even paint and called himself a facilitator not an instructor, leaving us to critique our own work when we were paying $2k for professional guidance. No demos, horrible lectures with the worst examples and a Googled definition of narrative Ive ever seen in my life. I learned more in a weekend at an illustration convention than I did for the last 2 years of my education at this sad excuse for an art school. The worst part is that when I had started, we had great painting teachers, but due to (what I hear) the owners being abusive tyrants, a lot of the good staff leave, or just cant be bothered to care.Student services employees were overworked and infamous for making financial and scheduling mistakes. Decided to acquire an 11% private loan for me without giving me other options for financing in my first semester; I didnt realize this til the bills started coming in for it. This is probably my own fault, but financial counseling was never offered and matters were often never explained. Job placement was advertised but is definitely a non-existent service. I worked in the bookstore for 3 years and got to hear all the complaints about delays and screw-ups from the office constantly.Community sense was great, and organized events on campus were fun. The galleries in the halls are great, and Im glad they still put effort into maintaining them. A handful of the teachers were fantastic, and I greatly respect them for actually caring about the students and being passionate about their craft while admin breathed down their neck with core words and values and bullshit rules. The school does have its moments, but, overall, I would never recommend it to anyone. If you are looking for illustration or painting instruction, community college can provide a wonderful foundation for much less money, and you can build on that base with online workshops and classes from professional working artists. Dont waste your money here.

From a Recent Graduate: Dont waste your time, money, or sanity. This is the most conservative, hypocritical art school you will find. Typically art schools are preferred by those who have been considered different in any way, which is what they look down upon here. They are predators, and frequently will manipulate the truth to get what they want which is only your money. They will all act like theyd do anything for you at the time, yet was told directly multiple times they had nothing to offer for anyone with a (learning) disability, that if I wanted my teachers to know, I had to inform them myself. But they couldnt give me special treatment to any students, I assumed this was because they’re private. Come to find out they didnt tell this to other students. They are difficult to work with and never take accountability for anything.

THIS IS NOT A MILITARY-FRIENDLY SCHOOL. If you are a veteran or using a family-members benefits, I strongly urge you to reconsider applying here or if you have already, cut your losses and transfer to another school. If you are using ANY financial aid or payment plan, please save yourself the headache and research other schools.Im not a teenager or a young adult. I am a mother, a wife, and a proud veteran with over 10 years of work experience who had intended to attend this school for a degree in Landscape Architecture (there is no other option for a Bachelor of Arts in Tucson, let alone in Arizona). I have earned an AA in Arabic and an AS in Intelligence Studies and Technology. I am not new to the college experience. The newer curriculum is legitimate and challenging for an amateur artist such as myself. I found my teachers to be kind, hard-working, intelligent, and loyal to their students (I speak only to those I had personally). My first semester, I took 18 credits (full time and half) and worked myself to exhaustion for good results: I had one of the highest GPAs and several of my projects presented in the schools gallery. I am a good student and my actions demonstrate that. However, I will NEVER go back... not even if the tuition was free.I will not hold allegiance with a school administration that would do the following:- steal from the government and the students, especially those that are veterans or low-income- lie to the students about their claims- threaten students to not inquire about their accounts (this was from the president, herself.. she told me I would not find a job post-school if I didnt follow her rules)- manipulate other students to believe that their peers and the VA are lying to them- pressure students to take out additional loans, just in case the VA doesnt cover debts in futureI am sickened that I assisted the school in recruiting new students under the guise of being military-friendly. I am embarrassed that I recommended SUVA to my friends and family. I miss my friends and peers and worry that they may have their finances destroyed, all for the sake of a greedy, incompetent administration.I am grateful to have transferred elsewhere and have the opportunity to continue my dreams. Please research the lawsuits pending/completed against Art Center/SUVA in Tucson and Albuquerque, the complaints with the BBB, the reviews posted on this site and Yelp. The students reviews are sadly true.Update in regards to SUVAs response (est Aug/Sept 2016):Last year SUVA had their status recommended for revocation by the Arizona State Approving Agency due to not attending training to properly file GI Bill students paperwork, for avoiding attempts to meet and discuss, and for not alerting students of the suspension. According to the VA, they were NOT allowed to enroll new students during the suspension (which occurred anyways).Fall semester of 2015, GI Bill students did not receive their BAH nor school tuition funding and when the appropriate communication channels were used, the school delayed responses, feigned ignorance, and then announced to the student body that the SAA was misunderstanding.I emailed several times, left voicemails, and when I went to school office to inquire, I was threatened and ushered out. Not once has SUVA taken responsibility for their poor management and destructive administrative practices. I have never been offered an apology or a refund of the benefits I earned while serving my country (my first semesters tuition). Shameful.Complaints against SUVA have been filed through the BBB, the Arizona Attorney Generals office, Senator McCains office, the SAA, the VA Education Office, the White House, and the US. Department of Education. My GI Bill education benefits were returned to me from the VA for my second semester, due to the investigation noting that SUVA was in fact, wrong. My 3rd Update (Feb 2018): Dept of Education was investigating them last year, reached out to me. Just dont waste your time here.I very much value the education I got while attending SUVA in ABQ, and yes that is a contradiction to my first statement so Ill explain. The instructors at SUVA while I was there were some of the best, and as I understand it now, all of them are gone and the school is reaching out through craigslist in order to hire new staff - no teaching experience necessary. I will admit I had a few teachers while there who were inexperienced but generally they were only employed there for a few months as student reviews were done at the end of each semester. It seems they no longer operate this way and run their basic curriculum off of a high school curriculum book that can be ordered from amazon. Which sadly may have been the case while I was there too, however it has just come to light along with many other unsettling issues.SUVA advertises high standards and a tough course but you will not get the kind of education you will ultimately pay for and you will probably end up with 100k + in debt. I graduated from the school two years ago, and it was not until a large group of students pulled together recently to file complaint after complaint that the school finally released my updated billing statement. And when they did so, they released it with four other students statements, to another student without any of our consent. As far as I can tell the staff member who did this has faced no consequences what so ever for violating student privacy. They have yet to send the statement directly to me or any of the other information I have spent the last two years asking for. As they will not release my diploma to me while they maintain I owe past tuition. However, they had initially told me that my loans, grants, and scholarships were covering my tuition in full and that I even had a credit for $5,000. Which of course disappeared and then I received a bill for over 22k.This was about a year before I graduated, and it still has yet to be fully resolved. But in order to fight the claim that I still owe tuition as I had been told that I didn’t need to be making any additional payments I am personally responsible for proving there is something wrong with my account and SUVA will not release my file to me so that I can compare my documents to theirs.Because it has taken so long and they are unwilling to work with me, as well as countless other students, and because of many other issues such as keeping students listed as enrolled long after theyve left the school (yes I am still enrolled full time and Ive reported it to my creditors but as usual nothing can be done unless the school reports it) I can only conclude there is something horribly wrong going on with student finances at this school and I will probably never see the diploma I worked very hard for.So yes, the skills I learned there have benefited me and I appreciate them, but at this point I feel they arent worth the amount of loans I took on or this mess I’ve had to deal with since. So seriously save yourself the headache and dont become another victim of this for profit school. I have spent countless hours emailing, calling, and even contacting the New Mexico Department of Higher Education and all of it has gotten me nowhere in dealing with this school. If I had known in the beginning how untrustworthy and underhanded this school is I would have taken my money to a school that really cares about their students and their futures. Rather than one just interested in leaving you with an insane amount of debt and the lowest level of education they can get away with giving you and still maintain accreditation.

The work that the students produce from SUVA is excellent. They are very professional every time I have interacted with them at the Addy Awards for Aafnm.

Does not provide the proper knowledge/education needed for art industries. Ridiculously expensive. If you have any issues or problems dont expect the administration to help, either.

I wish someone had warned me off this school. Student services incorrectly filed military benefits multiple times resulting in me owing money to the VA. Attempted to resolve it over and over, to no avail. Do not attend! Veterans steer clear!

The worst thing about this school, are the owners, Marvin and Sharmon Woods. They create a punitive, fearful environment for students and faculty alike. Before choosing to go here, check these people out. Do your due diligence, see how many lawsuits theyve been involved in.
