Such a breathtaking view to see this heavy train crawling up the hills with quadruple traction, passing its own line of trailers. The complete drive past took more then ten minutes.
Great place to watch trains. I always go to the overlook near the tunnel/cut to the East.
Very cool. We heard about it that morning and found it. We were about to leave when the train came through. It was pretty exciting actually. I felt like a kid again
Watching tehachapi loop on you tube Im amazed from the length of the trains Im from uk nothing like that here its a remarkable engineering task to build this you should be proud them who build this
The world-renowned Tehachapi Loop was completed in 1876 under the direction of William Hood, Southern Pacific Railroad Engineer. In gaining elevation around the loop, a 4000-foot train will cross above its rear cars in the tunnel below. The Cross at the Loop is a memorial to two railroad workers who died in the San Bernardino Train Disaster in 1989.
If you have never seen a freight train cross over itself, you just might want to do this while its still possible. There is an overlook from the highway just east of the loop; look for the two monuments along the roadside. Dont trespass, things today are not like they used to be here, stick to the legal viewing locations.
Riding a freight train outtah bakersfield going around the loop and thru that tunnel.. so much fun
Great for railfans, considerable action, though this gives a distant view. Local roads get you very near the lower portal. While a great piece of early rail engineering, the Loop is far exceeded by CPs dual spiral tunnels in BC.
So picturesque the landscape.
One of my absolute favorite places from my childhood. Strange to think that 2 decades ago you could walk up to the tracks without worry, now its all fenced off. Still a great place to go and watch trains, just from the hill above. I guess I was a kid at the right time!
Of you like trains, you will like this place. Civil engineering masterpiece. Over 100 trains per day go through this pass.
Great railfan place. Union pacific and BNSF come through regularly.
Fascinating spot. Lots of trains come through, so we were able to see a few go up and down. So cool that they came up with this plan, pulled it off and its still in use so many years later. My dad brought me here as a kid, and Im sure Ill be back years from now.
Got to see 2 trains go around the loop and they overlap themselves. It was a great experience to see
This is a really good spot to watch trains. The longer ones loop back over themselves. While in the area, check out the railroad museum in Tehachapi. No admission charged!
This is a cool little feature of the railroad. Theres a little turnout/overlook that will fit a couple vehicles.
Awesome to catch the loop. Does not take long. Amazing
Probably the only place in the country you can see something like this. I recommended a change because the original directions from Google Maps took me to a closed road. I submitted an update but havent heard if the correction to the actual marker was made online. Be cautious because parking is limited to pulling off of the side of a two lane road.
Simply fascinating to watch the spectacle of an engineering feet more than 100 years old. We arrived just as the train was starting its ascend and truthfully my mind was blown --seeing the front of the train on top of the back of the train...a must go see!
Great view. An engineering marvel, you must see the train complete the loop and circle itself while traveling uphill.
If you like engineering and/or trains, this is a must see. Such a marvel in engineering
This place is a must-see. Its an engineering marvel. Its one of the busiest single-track mainlines in the world. An average of 40 trains per day pass over itself in The Loop. It is designated California Historical Landmark #508. It took two years to build, opening in 1876. Many people wonder why this was built...well, a train cant go up a hill that is more than a 3% grade. The Tehachapis are a beautiful mountain range, with an elevation of 4000 feet at the peak of Highway 58. Bakersfield is at 400 feet in elevation. The other end of the tracks is at 2500 feet in Mojave, CA in the Mojave Desert. So engineers came up with a 2% grade around a hill, and putting in a tunnel where it loops around itself as the train gains elevation to make it through the mountain pass. The train also goes through a series of nine tunnels. What is interesting to see are the double-decked train cars. Youll see three or four engines to pull, sometimes two or three in the middle as helpers, and three or four at the end to help push. These are for fully loaded train cars. When returning train cars that are empty, they dont need as many engines. Because the train line is so busy, trains line up to wait to go through the Loop. For this reason, unfortunately, there are no passenger trains going through The Loop.
Watch a train loop above itself- apparently an engineering marvel. Trainspotters come from all over the world to witness this- their excitement makes this place all more special.
Interesting historical landmark! It is a must see if you like to watch trains. I wish there are some park bench on top of the hill. (35.196972, -118.532469 Google map GPS coordinates)That is the best spot to watch loop and trains. It can be a very good vista point.
Loved this place. Another piece of California history
If you enjoy trains, engineering, history, or just the outdoors, this place is worth a visit. Only 10 minutes off Highway 58. The day we were there we caught a line of train cars that had rolled over off the tracks. Wonder how often that happens?
Its exciting to watch how the train picks up speed to get enough power to make the rest of the way up the grade or slows Itself so it can make it the rest of the way down the steep grade. And always cool to here there horns blow thru the mountains.
Amazing to see what ingenuity and back-breaking work combined to produce! You may have to wait for a train but it is worth it! Beautiful area as well any time of the year.
Really cool place to come and watch trains. Mondays seem to be a bit slower than the rest of the week. Watch out for rattlesnakes, saw 3 during our 2 days there.
I love this
Watched three trains pass through here in the span of an hour with one sitting on the siding going down hill as one passed going uphill. Absolutely fantastic feat of engineering (no pun intended).
I have visited here many times and if you are into train watching then this is the place for you. You have both the Union Pacific and Burlington Sante Fe Railways traversing this main line. There are no public facilities here.
CALIFORNIA History, still in use today. With 36 Trains on average per day, you wont wait long to see the LOOPin action. Excellent stop on your road trip...
I DO miss the place...I just have ro go there again!.
Amazing piece of engineering, especially with todays long trains.
Amazing place to see an engineering feat!
When we made a day trip to visit this site, it was almost a waste. The was very little info on how to get here and we never did find a good vantagepoint, just the monument another revier noted. It appeared that all of the good vantage points were marked off for no trespassing.
This is one of the awsomest things Ive ever seen from the road! So awesome, in fact- I had to make up a word to describe the experience!
Dopeness if you like trains!
Great place to watch trains. Please stay off Broome Road. It is private property and the owners are annoyed at the fact that people come through their property to get that great shot of the loop. There are two great locations to watch trains in this area. #1 @ the historical monuments. #2. Just off Woodford-Tehachapi Rd. where you can see the blue Hanjin & brownish shipping containers. You can have an awesome view of the tunnel, signal & top of the loop from there. Please respect the NO TRESPASSING signs.
Wonderful view of the area and the trains going through the tunnels
Great day-trip excursion from Los Angeles Basinpark on the road with the over-look and watch a never ending stream of trains climbing the grade and looping through the historical loop.
I wish people would stay out of the damn road . Its just a train traveling in a freaking circle!
Took my boys to the Tehachapi Loop to experience being a train chaser. They had a blast...
The Loop known to almost every rail fan across the globe. Not often dose this occur. Helix correct name. So many documentaries are on this loop known as The Tehachapi Loop nice to live less than 50 miles to go often and hang out or take 35 mm film pics or sometimes taking 16 mm film kodak kodachrome BNSF & UP are the big ones with 99 cars 4 locos front 2 locos mid 4 locos rear sometimes creeping along 8-10 mph with squealing wheels against the track and the ground rumbling beneath your feet but must be close for this experience. Model railroading people have created this Loop on sets many marvel at the setup of this between Bakersfield and Mojave. Southern Pacific was a frequent mover on this line but went kaput when in 90s they SP took out a housing development and paid out and as a result only Union Pacific and BNSF travels the Loop !!!
Best trains pass by far
If only the San Joaquin went down to Los Angeles, then one could ride over the Loop any day of the week! (Hopefully.)
Worldz wndrful rlwy rod...¥¥¤£
The Tehachapi loop is an engineering marvel. It is recognized as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark and a California Historical Landmark. Built in 1874-1876 it solved the problem of getting trains from the central valley up the hill to Tehachapi. To visit the Loop and See / read the historical plaques take the Keene off ramp and follow the Signs. There are up to 400 trains a day using the loop, so you probably wont have to wait long to see the trains in action as the train actually can pass over itself as it makes the loop. For train fanciers it is a must see, for engineers it is a must marvel. and for the rest of us it is a wonderful curiosity to ponder. Remember There is also a train museum in Tehachapi and the Cesar Chavez memorial is also near the Loop turn off at Keene
Train watchers heaven
Worth the wander
Love watching the trains.
I wish to go there...
I rode this in July of 1975 on an 86 ft.double-deck open auto rack ( empty, noisy and dirty ) but what a veiw and what a ride!
