We loved this museum! Very good selection of interesting items. We liked the rocking chair that began rocking while I stood nearby. On its own. Haunted? Maybe.
Great history of Stuart and nearby areas. Worth a look and best when you have time to leisurely review the exhibits. As you come in and sign the registrar veer to the right to view the history in chronological order. Definitely recommend a visit!!
Historical store in the middle of downtown Stuart has maintained the timeline from when it was first opened. Multiple time appropriate displays of general merchandise used in those days. Great volunteers are full of historic facts and are really enthusiastic about this museum.
The lady who gave us our tour was so sweet (forgot her name). Very informative and interesting. All the ladies there that day were very hospitable. We will be back again.
Interesting history of downtown Stuart...so much to see! Small and quaint! Staff is friendly, knowledgeable and a very relaxed atmosphere! Free admission
What a great way to spend the day! The staff is friendly and it was a real treat to spend the day at the Heritage Museum!
WONDERFUL local, interesting museum with dedicated, knowledgeable, enthusiastic staff. Highly recommended.
During our college sorority reunion, 9 of us went to the Stuart Museum for a guided tour. What a WONDERFUL experience!!! The pride that our guide has for her birthplace and home flooded over us. Most of our group live in Florida and this tour gave us a look back at how the early years in a small town depended upon each other for services and support. Anyone going near Stuart, the Museum is a MUST!!!
We took a tour with our 2 boys 8y, 5y, & I can only say hat down to a lady who toured us! So passionate, knowledgeable about her town & the history that we had one of the best tours in museum ever! The museum is a must see! Thank you so much!
A real time capsule. When I visited museum, there was a guy talking about how his feet hurted! Its all fun if you have a good attitude, which I think I do.
We love the museum. The ladies at the museum were very nice and gave us ideas for other places to visit while on Stuart.
Our tour guide was wonderful. Very interesting to us two history buffs.
Packed with the history of Stuart and Martin County. Its worth a look.
Great place, visit if you love old Stuart-Jensen Beach Fl history
I love history and antiques! This place is so neat, packed full of Stuart, Martin County Florida artifacts and stories. Take the time to see the basement and listen to the stories!
This museum is located in an historic feed store built in 1901 in downtown Stuart. It is the oldest commercial building in Martin County. The building was originally the George W. Parks General Merchandise Store. George W. Parks and his family lived upstairs and the store occupied the first floor. In 1924 George sold the store and in 1946 it was purchased by the Truman Fertilizer Company and named the Stuart Feed Store. The City of Stuart purchased the building in 1988 and formed the Stuart Heritage, Inc to preserve and protect historic buildings in the town and artifacts from the city of Stuart. The museum opened in 1992.Its free to visit the museum and parking is free too. I stopped by on a recent trip to Stuart. I didnt have too long before closing and there was a lot to look at. The museum has over 10,000 from the 1880s through the 1950s. The city of Stuart took root when the Florida East Coast Railroad came through in 1894. You can find pictures of the railroad in the museum. The museum also has an exhibit dedicated to the Seminoles who were the native people in this area. They lived on the banks of Poppolton Creek and used to come in to the store on Saturdays to trade. Some of the displays are dedicated to the local legends like Trapper Nelson who died from a gun shot that may have been self inflicted or maybe not and the Ashley Gang who like Robin Hood would steal from the rich to give to the poor in the 1910s through the 20s. A final shoot out with police in 1924 killed John Ashley and every member of his gang. Another part of the museum is set up like a general store with ceramic chickens that are a nod to the chickens that used to run around inside the building.Items in the museum are in chronological order starting with the Seminoles, the pioneers, the 1920s through the 1950s. Some of the items are things you might have seen in your grandparents home like antique sewing machines and vintage refrigerators, A favorite display was a recreated ice cream parlor from the 1950s. The executive director of the museum is Mary Jones whose own family makes more than one appearance in the museum. Her family moved to Stuart in 1907 and her father was the town fire chief and her grandfather was the contractor for the Lyric Theater. While the emphasis is on Stuart and Martin County the museum also tells the story of Florida. You could spend a short time here or hours looking through all of the fascinating items. The museum also has a small gift shop with handmade crafts from some of the pioneer families in the community and a selection of interesting history books relevant to the area. It is definitely going to take me another visit to finish going through all of the photographs and treasures. If you are a fan of history like I am you will want to pay this quaint museum a visit.
The Museum associate Mrs Hardwick welcomed us & her daughter also there had a very welcoming conversation with us. I was with my girlfriend who grew up in Stuart. Because of the museum it was so much easier & enjoyable for her to share some of her most memorable life experiences. We spent at least an hour & probably closer to 2 & only were able to really see a portion of all that they have to share. This is definitely a treasure to see & it was FREE donations only !
Enjoyed all the information supplied by the very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Recognized many of their exhibits as I saw them as a child at my grandparents home in Hawaii.
The history is fascinating.I loved going back in time. The place is preserved so well and that in and of itself is wonderful.
An amazing resource about Stuarts history. Ebery time I visit, I find something new to see.
This is a little gem of a place. Many interesting artifacts and a wonderful volunteer staff. Enjoy a slice of yesterday in Stuart.
Great collection of Stuarts history, full of locally donated items. Has exhibits ranging from hunting to sports to cooking to fashion, so there is something to interest everyone. I was most impressed by the guides in the museum - they are friendly and hospitable and truly take an interest in informing you about the museum (without ever being intrusive or overwhelming). Highly recommended if you love Stuart and want to learn more about this great town.
We did a quick walk-through, there were many objects and photographs see. Old pharmacy set-up, mannequins with period clothing. Many antique items everywhere. To be honest, the clutter made it hard to see and enjoy everything, I would prefer more literature and basic exhibits so that I could really immerse myself in the period. Still very neat to see and a donation requested. I gave $5.
So Much History in this Museum and I had a Great time here!! Plan to spend a few hours to Appreciate it All!!
The stories the staff has and there local knowledge is incredible. Could and did spend hours there looking at all the displays and employees were very helpful in explanations of anything we asked. Would recommend anybody that is interested in Martin County to check these people out.
This is a must do. The staff does a great job getting local history out to the public. They have a lot of very interesting items and display them well.
Nice little museum. Lots of history and very informative.
I lived in Stuart for 14 years before visiting the museum. Quite an amazing place.
Nice historical photos of Martin County and Stuart. Great place to spend a morning.
Quaint little museum with a lot of memorabilia.
More interesting than I thought it would be a first glance. Nice staff with knowledge of local area. Referred us to free local history tour of town, which was also great.
A nice local heritage museum. We met a few wonderful ladies who were more than willing to walk around and share their knowledge of the local history and artifacts. Nice leisurely experience with a group of friendly and knowledgeable ladies. Ask for a guided tour and if you enjoy local history it will be time well spent.
Very interesting and the volunteers were more than polite, informative and sincerely interested with their work.
Great place to visit for all ages. There is no charge for visiting, but theres a donation jar. This location is different than most, as I viewed it as a trustee of the towns history and development and not a shop selling Astronaut ice cream.
The history the heritage center has is amazing. The volunteers who work there are lovely, and love to show you around and talk about all the different pieces of history. (Make sure you take a trip down to the basement, if its open).
Top notch service from the ladies who wet extremely nice and wanted to make sure I had a good experience!! I feel the reason I rate it as 4 instead of 5 stars is that alot of the vintage equipment on display is common in Ireland (my home), and therefore underwhelmed me. I think for other nationalities this would be a much more exciting experience!
Full of local history. Charming to stop in while strolling in historical downtown Stuart.
We stumbled into this place while walking the health trail. What a pleasant discovery! We were approached while looking in from outside and invited to come check it out. Once inside, we were greeted by a volunteer who was so knowledgeable about the history of the area. There was quite the collection of artifacts, pictures, and information with friendly, knowledgeable volunteers. Anyone living in the area should surely stop in and learn some local history.
An amazing place rich in local history!
Great staff, very friendly and eager to share their knowledge about local Customs people stores events and history. Every town should have a little Museum like this. It doesnt take to walk through and see what Stuart used to look like. Its a great place to take kids and show them what the world was like before it went digital!!!! And if youre at least 30, youll be surprised to see what they have there now considered antique!!
The people that operate that place are fantastic the gave a great tour and full of knowledge

Its cool, but kinda boring?? I went with my gf, and it was cool to look around.
