What an amazing spot! I have captured some of my best selling images here over the years! On the east side its a beautiful beach scene laden with stunning coral rock formations that are literally out of this world. On the west side there an extremely photogenic pier set withing the backdrop of the inter coastal waterway!

The beach on both side of the street at this location is absolutely breathtaking. With the reef on one side and the pier on the other. Whether you are a sunrise or a sunset type of person this spot is perfect for you. Shelling is also great. So pack for the day. Head out early to hit the museum and then have a picnic on the beach and then catch some waves.

This House of Refuge is the last remaining of the original dozen shipwreck life-saving stations on Floridas Atlantic Coast. Built in 1876 to help stranded sailors, its long colorful history spans nearly 70 years. Today it is owned by the Martin County government and leased to the Martin County Historical Society, which operates it as a museum exhibiting life-saving equipment used over the years and showcasing the keepers quarters, c. 1904. On May 3, 1974, the House of Refuge was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

The last of nine houses of refuge from survivors of ship wrecks that still stands and has been restored back in the 70s!!! Whats not to like? The rock formations along the shoreline are worth the trip alone. But when you are standing there looking out to sea, you can almost envision the calamity of the people who had hoped to reach this point to survive after their ship sank. Great store with many books regarding the area and more. Also the shopkeepers are more than happy to answer any questions you may want to ask. Dont miss it, but please dont leave anything but your footprints!

This is a small but wonderful bit of Florida history, all but hidden away past a wall of hotels and condos. Although it is possible to explore the site self-guided, if a volunteer docent is available take a tour - you wont regret it. Either way it should take only an hour, two at the most. Take advantage of the discounted twofer ticket with Elliott Museum a few miles north and make an entire day of local history.

There are few places on the east coast of Florida that compare to Stuarts finest. Rivaling New Englands, Cape Cod to North Carolinas, Outer Banks, this Stuart icon is a MUST SEE! Even though corporate America cant seem to keep its hands off the desire to capitalize on every American scenic view, this one isnt overcrowded just yet!

During a reunion in Stuart, nine of us had a guided tour. What a fabulous history lesson!!! And, an even greater appreciation for fresh water, electricity and air conditioning!!! Our guides have such passion about the history of The House of Refuge that we felt we were right there - back in the late 1800s and early to mid 1900s. If you want to understand Floridas infancy and the tough life of the early pioneers, visit The House of Refuge for a memorable experience!!!

The museum itself had so many more artifacts and information than I expected. The beach is unique and rocky, which is pretty cool for Florida. I would definitely recommend to anyone in the area.
