This is an excellent park for anyone who lives in the area, especially if you are a boy scout troop. The Boy Scout area is well-developed with three large lean-tos (one is disabled accessible), 3 large fire rings, and built-in benches for all of them. It is an a large campground with lots of open space and can be reached by vehicle. The rest of the camp has some nice improvements like a pavilion and a large parking lot. Theres even a pond with a small island and benches that look over it. Best part is that the town does not charge for its use if you are local.

Dog park is top of the line. So amazing that it’s in the shade and very well constructed. Then the hiking trails are good as well. Definitely follow the instructions and take a picture of the map as it gets confusing.

This is a great little forest with a pond and well kept walking trails. I was impressed by its cleanliness. There are also old foundations/ruins to explore and cool boulders to climb. This is a great place to bring the kids for a stroll anytime of year.

This place is pretty cool. There are a lot of picnic tables to eat at, and a gazebo in case it rains. Benches to sit at while looking out at the pond. There is also an abundance of mosquitoes so get bug spray. The trails are nice to run on as well.

Beautiful location with ample parking. The maps were rather illegible, so it wasnt obvious where the trails were or how far they went. The trail we chose was poorly maintained and ended up winding through what looked like rarely used picnic table sites, instead of actually going anywhere. Our old dog got tired before we could explore any further, so we just sat in the shade by the pond and watched dragonflies.Another thing - there are signs all the way in letting you know that Roosevelt Forest is for Stratford residents only. The website linked on the Google listing doesnt mention a thing about this. We ignored it because we needed a quiet place to walk our old, paralyzed dog while we were in town, and it was fine. We were nearly the only people there as far we we could tell. Why is it that the wealthy places with plenty of money to support things like this seek to keep people out, while other locations with less wealth welcome everyone to enjoy their parks and outdoor amenities?Anyway, Im sure there are plenty of other lovely trails to enjoy - if youre not a resident, I guess you run the risk of the angry residents of Stratford coming to chase you out

The land is a bit of Vermont heaven, in a busy suburbia. Beautiful trails and awesome old fire chimneys.... I feel so at peace here. My dog loves it. However the shooting range overtakes any peace, but as has been said, it is so underutilized.positively heaven, until the shooting starts, and then, well, you have a 100lb golden retriever in your lap.

If you need some peace in your life take a ride to Roosevelt Forest and go for a little hike, it will help to clear your mind and its very serene. Just keep in mind that sometimes the road gets a little bit rough right at the end so just go slow and you will be okay

Nicely maintained trails that are relatively level & easy to walk. There are never really many people. You are supposed to be a Stratford resident with a sticker on your car in order to use the park, but I have never seen this enforced. As a Stratford resident myself, I think the sticker sign is rediculous as the park is very rarely crowded enough to actually warrant this rule. I use the park as a relaxing place to walk my dogs through the trails. I do avoid hiking during the warmer months due to the many biting bugs that inhabit the forest. Late October through April/May are my favorite months to visit.

I used to live right on Roosevelt forest, first of all there is no comparison between the maintenance of the trails between Roosevelt Forest and the Shelton trails. Shelton just does such a better job in every way with maintenance of their trails, providing garbage cans that actually get emptied...Stratford public works is a total failure as an organization. Also, since the police dept firing range in located within Roosevelt forest they often post forest closed signs at the main entrance of the forest. This is ludicrous in so many ways! There are at least 5-6 entrances into the forest, however they only post these ridiculous signs at the main entrance, does anyone else see a problem with this? LOL! And of course they do this in the spring right when the weather starts to get nice and in the fall....Its just a total failure of common sense...I mean you can park at any other entrance, or walk in from any other entrance if you live near one of them and you have no earthly idea that the forest is closed. But if you happen to have to drive there you are turned around at the main entrance with the Forest Closed signs....Common sense has left our society!
