It is a beautiful place. The sad part is that you may encounter folks fighting you for parking in order for us all to engage with enlightenment...and if you are lucky they might curse you off. The area is amazing, its the people that lets it down.
Make sure that you continue the hike past this point. Once you get to the top, go left. There is a bit of a climb, but its a great opportunity for photos! You wont regret.
Iconic place here in Sedona. A local’s favorite spot to admire the sunset! Trail is well maintained and by no means long, however, in some stretches there it may be a bit strenous for those who don’t hike ofter. I promise that your hard work will be paid off with amazing views at the top so don’t give up and keep climbing!
Amazing views!! This hike is NOT for the faint hearted or weak of ankles haha its a very steep climb and even steeper decent. (Slide down the rock) once at the top the views are amazing!! Quicker than Devils bridge but not necessarily easier. Do this hike!!
Awesome hike, especially the part when youre crawling but very do-able. The view is amazing!
Beautiful trail and views at the top. VERY crowded very early so get there earlier than you would think you need to. A great place to watch the sun rise over Sedona
Sedona is located 100 MI (160KM) north of Phoenix near Flagstaff. It is a small town known for the red rock formations and overall outdoor feel of the area. During the summertime many people venture up north to Sedona and Flagstaff to escape some of the summer heat in the Phoenix area. This is a great location to visit if you want to do hikes and is great for photographers. It isn’t uncommon to see couples taking engagement photoshoots all throughout Sedona due to the beautiful backdrops the mountains provide. There is limited parking for this trail so you may need to park on the side of the road, so if you want to avoid the hassle of parking and maneuvering around others during the hike as well as avoid the heat try looking into starting your hike prior to 9AM. It takes around 2 hours to arrive to Sedona from Phoenix and certain trails like this one can get very crowded after around 10AM and even earlier in the summer so you have to plan accordingly. This particular hike which leads you to cathedral rock takes around 1.5 hours to complete depending on how busy it is and how many stops you make. It is very tricky in certain parts where you must climb on all fours up narrow waterways. Because of this we suggest traveling light and in clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and to complete the hike you may need to leave your furry friends behind unless they’re small enough to carry. During the summertime it is also necessary to be aware of monsoon season which causes heavy rain in short periods of time which can lead to flash floods in the area. Nevertheless, once arriving at the top you will see a vast landscape that showcases the various layered textures of the surrounding mountains in the desert. If you’re ever in Northern Arizona this is definitely a place worth visiting and a good hike to do! As you approach the top of the Cathedral Rock Trail it will open up into this large bowl below and there will be space to walk around the edges like this one pictured. Despite how it seems the path to get there is not too narrow and there is plenty of room to stand but it can be quite scary depending on how close you are to the edge. To get this particular angle of the area this photo was taken near the end of the trail as you first come up onto this concourse. This angle allows you to get the edge of the rocks to the side as well as the area below. At the time that we went we were able to take pictures with only one other couple waiting to take photos after us. Because this is the ideal location to take photos at we imagine there is probably quite a long wait during popular times of the day. Prior to hiking anywhere we always like to check the recent conditions using @alltrails to see if there are any recent hazards to know of. It’s also good at providing you with more accurate info on the amount of time to complete a hike as well as how busy it gets during certain hours!- @wanderingwithustwo
Amazing colors, with green, orange, red and blue contrasts. Looks like in movies from an European perspective. Dont forget to bring water, because it can be dry and hot here, and you might walk longer than you intially thought.
Breathtaking scenery and challenging hike. I would say this hike is simple for those who are regular hikers but for those who have no hiking experience or are used to dirt trails that you can drive a vehicle on then this will be a challenge for you. We hiked this trail to the top and then some. When you get to the top you can make a right and check out an anamazing view from the northern most rock and if you take a left from the top(this is coming up from the east side as it’s the side we came up) you can go left and hike around the western most southern rock. There will be more rock scaling to get to the top of this scenic but worth it spot. We came across all types on this hike. We noticed the Europeans and Japanese folks took to this hike as if it was nothing. There are folks here in slip on vans, gym shoes, expensive hiking boots to Birkenstock’s! The one gal who came up as we were going back down had on not only Birkenstock’s but she was carrying her dog. Another couple had a small dog as well. So it all depends on your level of comfort and experience. I was in gym shoes and would have felt much more comfortable if I had hiking shoes like my boyfriend had on. I was nervous in some spots going up as it can be slippery on the rocks and was surprised that for me going down was easier. Usually going back down has proven to be harder for me. We are all different when it comes to hiking. Bring water and a camera!
Gorgeous view on top of the trail. It’s a 30min hike to go to the top with some complicated moments -Can be a bit slippery but Definitely worth climbing. Bring good shoes and water. The sunset view is breathtaking. Perfect spot to take pictures.
It was exhausting, definitely not for beginners! If this is your first hike here, BECAREFUL and wear the right shoes! The view is worth it!
Absolutely Amazing ! We climbed the Trailhead & enjoyed the magnificent views from the top ! Gods landscape showcased beautifully !
Find your own as in life, but still respect life that is life
What an amazing place and such a great view! Not far either which made the reward of the view even greater, I was truly impressed.
Awesome places to travel before dying will leave you speechless. They are amazing. Discover them!
Solid moderate hike. Good grip is a must. Decent views.
Amazing hike! Well worth it. Wear good hiking boots and bring lots of water and a snack. Our kids ages 6 and 9 loved it.
Such an amazing hike!!!
Fun hike, awesome views in every direction.
Can get a little crowded but still worth the hike up. Its short but straight up so be prepared. Highly recommended!
@5000 ft elev, 3/4 mile trail, 700 vertical ft, @60 years old, yes it kicked my azz... And I loved every minute of it!Its great to be alive and the views are spectacular!
This was an easier hike than Camelback Rock in Scottsdale - so much easier than it appears initially. Climbing gear is not required to get to the end of trail and enjoy. Also, it is not true that your beat time to climb is first thing in the morning. In fact, afternoon hike at 4pm guarantees the hike in the shade and will end with breathtaking views in the sunset.
Best hike ever
This is my favorite hike in Sedona.
Moderately strenuous, short hike to the saddle of this iconic Sedona landmark. Parking lots and roadway parking spaces fill up quickly on busy weekends and Holidays.
It is amazing place with wonderful views
Fun quick scramble with great views and challenging fun terrain.
Great hike and majestic views! Lots of people to interact with and share the experience.
Tough but good hike. There is a point during the hike, maybe half way, where its very narrow, steep, and only room for one way traffic. Be careful. Other than that the views going up are amazing and so is the top. Get to the trailhead parking lot early because it fills up very quickly.
Beautiful architecture. Well nestled into the mountain side
I had a wonderful experience hiking and meditating here. ️. The views are breathtaking.
Fantastic hike. I have no hiking experience but made it all the way to the top. There is one narrow section that looks steep and may be a turn around point for many people. However, if you decide to attempt it, take your time and make sure you have good shoes. Keep your body weight forward and use both hands and feet. It is not that challenging if you are moderately fit. Just use caution. The view is absolutely worth the effort to hike all the way up and is probably one of the best views in Sedona. There is a cliff on the right side of the top that you can walk onto if you have the guts. I didnt try it but it would make for a once-in-a-lifetime photograph.
Top favorite hikes in Sedona!
Great climb....the higher you go the fewer people and the better the views.
We had a great day hiking this trail. It was well worth it. Some issue with bikers using the trail, but it all worked out. Plan on the day for beginners and intermediate hikers. We didnt go to the other side of the cathedral rock, but you can do so and take a trail from there back to the trail head.
Challenging hike, but its worth it!
This hike has great variety if you start down by the river. We walked along the river first under the big trees before making our way up onto the red rock shelf and making the final climb up into the cathedral. We returned along a somewhat flat trail that turned this into somewhat of a loop. Great views, great weather, and family make for a great hike.
This place is pretty famous in Sedona. On other trails we had people asking us how to access this place. Everything about Cathedral Rock is just awe inspiring, it really makes you think about geology and how something like this came about. You can stand in awe of everything around you and know that people have also been standing in awe for thousands of years. This is truly a beautiful place.
Gorgeous hike. Gets very crowded. Wear good hiking shoes. Quite steep in places but rock is grippy.
Awesome climb, unbelievable view
Beautiful first hand experience of the red rock. The trail is a moderate level, which means that you need to climb sometimes, but it is not that difficult as it may look like. The hike up takes about 45 min as the longest with multiple stops for a shadow and pictures. There is a nice wind at the end of the trail, where you can enjoy the breathtaking view in any direction. If you want a little more than that, keep going to the right where you can get even higher (perfectly safe) to catch another view.
Its simple hike.. there is elevation and slope.. a small piece of the trail is tricky because of smooth rock.. dont go during snow
Epic hike to a spiritual vortex, anyone...? Sign me up!
Cathedral rock is a great hike. The views are amazing. The red rocks are spectacular.
Awesome
Incredible hike
Beautiful hike. Slightly difficult. Take time. Beautiful view at any stop especially at the top
One of the best places to visit in Sedona. Mesmerizing views from the top.. the climb is steep at places and it may not be something youd like to climb without stops. Try to be back before it gets dark since the way down could be tricky. The end of the trail offers scintillating 360 degree views of Sedona.
Beautiful
A very spiritual place!
A stunning location for a great days trail walking
Pure Wow! What a beautiful view from the top!!!
Children are OK
Nice views
Looks good from the plane
Awesome
Probably my favorite place in Sedona
